FWIW, Bay Ridge and other parts of deep Brooklyn and Staten Island went blue last night thanks to the work of lots of Middle Eastern women getting out the vote. Thank a Yemeni or Palestinian woman in Brooklyn for getting rid of Marty Golden and Dan Donovan.

Used to know a lot of Iranian exchange students way back in the '70s/'80s. Some lefties, others religious, some more party animals.

Just read through this and the accompanying slideshow. Pretty good read and some of the extremities—wealth, forced secularism and such alienating a religious base—seem pertinent to the U.S. nowadays as well. allthatsinteresting.com...

Along with Pakistan's Tafo Bros. - the Golden Ring are some of the best instrumental rock anywhere. To bad the stuff is so hard to find.

I got a whole album if you want me to DropBox it to ya, Franco

The one we're hearing now is a setar
Avatar Wed. 11/7/18 8:12pm TDK60:

setar! A cousin of the Indian sitar?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 11/7/18 8:15pm Gary:

Mebbe. It had 3 strings at first and then, 250 years ago, they added a 4th
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 11/7/18 8:15pm Gary:

VERY thin neck, tho

Avatar Wed. 11/7/18 8:42pm TDK60:

Is there any influence from Arabic culture in Persian music? vice versa?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 11/7/18 8:44pm Gary:

Gosh. I'm not really sure, I would imagine so, but I don't know its history well enough to say what, how much, etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 11/7/18 8:48pm Gary:

There are passages about the seamlessness transition between desert musics, which includes Iran, in that Deben Battachayra 4-CD set we heard last set
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 11/7/18 8:49pm Gary:

... so, certainly, Battachayra thought so. But for him, it was all along a (geographic-->cultural) spectrum
Avatar Wed. 11/7/18 8:57pm TDK60:

I assume there's influence both ways, don't know for sure, should look it up.

I know. Loving it. How do you all like Minnesota punking the rest of the US with the first female Muslim senator? Booyah!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 11/7/18 9:12pm Gary:

It does kind of feel like your bones are being scraped
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 11/7/18 9:13pm Gary:

Haha, that response was meant for TDK ... super thrilled about a number of the election results, including that one!
Avatar Wed. 11/7/18 9:17pm coelacanth∅:

the scraping sorta sound sounds like a piece i made, and the "instrument" used was a toy of some sort my nephew had that had stiff wires coming out, like a whisk, only they had ends, and many more of them than a whisk - just running it along a door and other things. i can't think of it as annoying!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 11/7/18 9:17pm Gary:

But Erik ... what happened to your internet?

They "ran out of internet" in our area. That's what the sales guys said, "We're out of Internet in your area." The company got a grant to establish more rural internet connections and gave it all to their executives. That's what the attorney general's office told me.
Avatar Wed. 11/7/18 9:20pm northguineahills:

Well, Erik, you elected the first Muslim Rep to the House 12 years ago, so, kudos!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 11/7/18 9:21pm Gary:

OMG. That's ... that's crazy.
  Wed. 11/7/18 9:21pm Erik B in Minnesota:

  Wed. 11/7/18 9:29pm Erik B in Minnesota:

TDK60 - I'm impressed by your handle. In 1980-83, my entire music collection was on TDK60's. Is that the reference?
Avatar Wed. 11/7/18 9:30pm coelacanth∅:

(despite my revulsion to organized religion)
Avatar Wed. 11/7/18 9:31pm hyde:

i used to generally buy TDK cassettes too
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 11/7/18 9:32pm Ike:

I don't mind talking politics! Last night was disappointing in some ways but at least we *finally* beat the Republican state senator in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, who ran over an old lady and killed her, impersonated cops while screaming at cyclists, etc. for the last 16 years and kept getting re-elected anyway... until now! I'm sure the Democratic-leaning Arabic community of Bay Ridge played a big role in that flip. Hooray!
Avatar Wed. 11/7/18 9:32pm coelacanth∅:

i tried every brand i found, at least once. nothing came close to tdk. still have hundreds of 'em and they all still play and sound good.

Avatar Wed. 11/7/18 9:35pm TDK60:

Erik that's the reference; yet, I later realized I had actually used more TDK90s back then. Also used (and still use) Maxells. Just found some old Memorex mix-tapes from the early 80s that are now shot. But on the comments board the other night an artist came forward who collects old tapes for art pieces. I'm going to send to him.
  Wed. 11/7/18 9:39pm Erik B in Minnesota:

Gary, wasn't "Larry Grogan" a fictional character we made up?
  Wed. 11/7/18 9:39pm chresti:

i had maybe 100-200 maxells. some sounded great and still do but a too big proportion of them failed quickly. i only had one memorex and it sounded like crap from the get-go. the other terrible ones were basf, and sony. (& some fly by night brands i bought one each of)
the only tdk i had problems with was their metal ("m") tape, supposedly the "professional", best one. most of them sounded bad fairly soon.

Ok Gary. I’ll watch from this end
