This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

this is such a beautiful work, damn
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 7/26/18 7:22pm northguineahills:

I found this Kraftwerk album w/o a cover, but in a sleeve, in the charity shop my mother runs for her county as a volunteer. It was odd, as they usually only have clothes and food, but when I was 21, I dug around and found it, and knew I hit the jackpot! (I didn't even knew this album existed at the time). (In HS I was really into weird polyester 70s fashion that it would get from all the donation from the dying old people).
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 7/26/18 7:23pm northguineahills:

(and I would dig every time I was home from college). sadly, outside a Bach cd, the only cool music I found.
  Thu. 7/26/18 7:23pm ike:

Greetings!
Avatar Thu. 7/26/18 7:24pm Flash Strap:

i got my first synth album in a county thrift too, in semi-rural north carolina. Jarre's Oxygene. something special about a find like that

Hi Ike
Avatar Thu. 7/26/18 7:25pm Flash Strap:

or rather, Hi Ike!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 7/26/18 7:26pm northguineahills:

and when I mean, dig, I mean dig, as I volunteered to organized the new donation. (I still do when I visit home, for altruistic and selfish reasons).(found a cassette briefcase last summer, fist decent find in almost a decade).
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 7/26/18 7:26pm northguineahills:

errr, new donations....
Avatar Thu. 7/26/18 7:27pm Flash Strap:

weirdly, same here. I once dug my way into a misplaced steak knife down in one of the clothes piles while working in the back, as a kid
Avatar Thu. 7/26/18 7:28pm Flash Strap:

loved those big piles of trash&treasure though, enchanting, plump with possibility
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 7/26/18 7:29pm northguineahills:

All of my Jarre, Tangerine Dream, Tomita, etc, and Space's "Fly"came from thrifts stores for $.50-$1 a pop.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 7/26/18 7:30pm northguineahills:

I had a friend buy a funky velvet coat in a thrift store in NYC, and find an 8-ball of blow. (probably had been there for since the 70s)
Avatar Thu. 7/26/18 7:38pm Flash Strap:

both of those comments amuse and astound
Avatar Thu. 7/26/18 7:38pm Flash Strap:

wish I was still scoring Tangerine Dream LPs for single dollars
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 7/26/18 7:39pm northguineahills:

All of my Klause Schulze LPs came from similar thrift finds....

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 7/26/18 8:10pm northguineahills:

T-storms on and off, river 10km away slightly flooding, but nothing serious. At least I haven't had to water my garden since late March, and the rain keeps the temp down...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 7/26/18 8:11pm chresti:

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 7/26/18 8:22pm northguineahills:

Yeah, long tracks, is what I go for, although I sometimes put in short noise tracks in b/tn. My Solid Ground, new to me, Evan!
Avatar Thu. 7/26/18 8:25pm Flash Strap:

only had one album... from Rüsselsheim. more conventional psych rock than anything else tonight, but this track has the sort of primitive brutality that makes a thing special

Ose, also new to me!
Avatar Thu. 7/26/18 8:59pm Flash Strap:

Pinhas of Heldon, I should say. also Herve Picart, who i think is slightky running the show here. great fat synth sound all throughout
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 7/26/18 9:01pm Uncle Michael:

greetings
Avatar Thu. 7/26/18 9:01pm Flash Strap:

Hello Uncle!
Avatar Thu. 7/26/18 9:03pm Flash Strap:

how goes it in your neck of the woods UM
Avatar Thu. 7/26/18 9:03pm still b/p:

Good evening.
I would've liked that Banfi back in '78 if I'd heard it. And the Ose is OK. If I tried to articulate why others of the period...like Tomita..never brought the ol' satisfaction for me, I'd sound snotty and unkind. Not informed, mind you, just snotty and unkind.
Avatar Thu. 7/26/18 9:06pm Flash Strap:

hi b/p

Tomita has perhaps, at times, a kitsch factor which brings him a bit too close to novelty music, but I'll stand by the best of his works and I think he's wonderful
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 7/26/18 9:07pm northguineahills:

Good soundtrack for my glyph script research, of the yet to be undecipehered: Rongorongo of Rapa Nui: www.cabinetmagazine.org...
Avatar Thu. 7/26/18 9:07pm Flash Strap:

i like him even better than Wendy Carlos, and you can lay to that as Long John might say
Avatar Thu. 7/26/18 9:08pm Flash Strap:

i love Rongorongo, what a mystery
Avatar Thu. 7/26/18 9:08pm Flash Strap:

decipher it please, NGH
Avatar Thu. 7/26/18 9:08pm Flash Strap:

but re: Tomita: a pretty different block of the synthesizer neighborhood than the krautrock boys
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 7/26/18 9:09pm Uncle Michael:

It's a nice evening. I have my ears on you, one eye on the orioles and hummingbirds feeding, and one eye on the Rangers game, awaiting word on a trade that's probably going down right now.
Avatar Thu. 7/26/18 9:10pm Flash Strap:

Besombes - Rizet may have the best French "krautrock" album, imo
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 7/26/18 9:11pm Uncle Michael:

I wonder if anyone has ever used the name or title "Krautwerk."
Avatar Thu. 7/26/18 9:11pm Flash Strap:

sounds like a good one, UM. have about ten or 12 hummingbirds fighting over our feeders right now, absolute insanity. its a dogfight out there
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 7/26/18 9:13pm Uncle Michael:

I only see one or two at a time. We have nesters here. No idea how many. They prefer the oriole feeder to the hummingbird feeder. We have a freaking mob of orioles.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 7/26/18 9:13pm coelacanth∅:

hey Evan and Explorers
Avatar Thu. 7/26/18 9:14pm Flash Strap:

hey Coelacanth!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 7/26/18 9:15pm northguineahills:

From what I can read, most of the surviving Rongorongo glyphs deal w/ human and agriculture fertility, and catching sea life, and their gods, But exactly what, who knows?
Avatar Thu. 7/26/18 9:15pm Flash Strap:

@UM: last year for the first time we started seeing more than 2 or 3, as many as 7. this year it's absurd how many are mobbing the feeders. we have 3 feeders now to keep up
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 7/26/18 9:17pm Uncle Michael:

When more than one humingbird shows up at the same time, they'd rather act territorial than feed.
Avatar Thu. 7/26/18 9:19pm Flash Strap:

exactly, it's an all-day snoopy vs the red baron extravaganza
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 7/26/18 9:19pm northguineahills:

I've haven't seen any hummingbirds in my yard, but I saw a giant clear-winged hummingbird moth last Saturday....
Avatar Thu. 7/26/18 9:19pm Flash Strap:

beautiful moth
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 7/26/18 9:21pm northguineahills:

Got some pics...(but at a distance, it was shy).
Avatar Thu. 7/26/18 9:22pm Flash Strap:

Мелодия is the only label in the USSR from '64. Usually when you encounter releases on Мелодия in the wild it's schlager and the like. sort of crazy to think of this masterpiece on the same label

USSR label but Grünberg is Estonian, btw. currently Chairman of the Board of the Estonian Institute of Buddhism
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 7/26/18 9:23pm coelacanth∅:

i started seeing hummingbirds early this year, when barely anything was blooming yet, but strangely haven't seen them much lately. they love the beebalm which is right by the house. i've had extremely close encounters.
Avatar Thu. 7/26/18 9:25pm Flash Strap:

@NGH: visually, it's a beautiful language as well. Easter Island's history is so weird and mysterious
Avatar Thu. 7/26/18 9:28pm still b/p:

Saw this today, about a hummingbird encountered in a greenhouse: "...thrusting his sharp self into the flowers with electrical rapidity (I hate the metaphor, but it gives something of the instantaneousness and the jeweled violence)..."
Avatar Thu. 7/26/18 9:30pm Flash Strap:

wow, jeweled violence
Avatar Thu. 7/26/18 9:31pm still b/p:

Glam-punk band.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 7/26/18 9:34pm chresti:

I never thought of hummingbirds as violent
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 7/26/18 9:36pm chresti:

one flew into the office once, it did a good job dusting the light fixture
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 7/26/18 9:36pm coelacanth∅:

sbp that validates my concern when a hummingbird is hovering directly in front of my face, making sudden advancements of a few inches to over a foot, toward me... which has happened more than once. (in locations 75 miles away from each other) i always move slightly when they get within 2 feet, not knowing how quickly they can thrust their sharp selves into my eye or something.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 7/26/18 9:38pm chresti:

they like sweet smells
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 7/26/18 9:38pm melinda:

I haven't seen a hummingbird in several years, poor habitat I guess. I did have one land on my shirt pocket 20+ years ago, always hope for another encounter. My glasses would protect me from eye damage.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 7/26/18 9:39pm chresti:

and they are attracted bright colors, I'm guessing
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 7/26/18 9:40pm chresti:

Wow! in your pocket! Precision landing!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 7/26/18 9:41pm melinda:

I planted bee balm last year but it looks kind of sad, I probably don't water and feed new plantings enough.
Avatar Thu. 7/26/18 9:41pm still b/p:

Don't wear red eye-shadow or cry sugar tears.
They're around here, Melinda. You know anyone with a feeder?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 7/26/18 9:42pm coelacanth∅:

i can't imagine i smell that sweet after working in the garden for hours!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 7/26/18 9:42pm coelacanth∅:

that's pretty amazing, in the shirt pocket!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 7/26/18 9:43pm chresti:

Maybe they are attracted to garden dust
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 7/26/18 9:44pm coelacanth∅:

...(or, ON the shirt pocket)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 7/26/18 9:45pm chresti:

on or in, either way!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 7/26/18 9:46pm melinda:

@b/p I haven't seen any feeders, I have a regular feeder I've been meaning to put up for years. Other birds stopped showing up too when a new neighbor moved in and cut down a lot of plantings on the other side of my fence. The pocket landing happened as I was about to enter a shopping mall and a poor disoriented bird flew out, I think it needed to get its bearings. At first it was icky because I thought it was a giant bug, then I realized what it was.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 7/26/18 9:49pm melinda:

It's fun to imagine that I am a magical hummingbird magnet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 7/26/18 9:49pm chresti:

There's a small window of time when I see a few in griffith park
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 7/26/18 9:49pm coelacanth∅:

wow - well i guess you didn't swat it. there have been a couple of times i had to curse my quick reflexes, after swatting a firefly or a ladybug that landed on me, before seeing what it was.
Avatar Thu. 7/26/18 9:50pm Flash Strap:

they are some of the coolest birds in existence, and so fierce
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 7/26/18 9:51pm chresti:

I've heard of people that have had birds follow them
Avatar Thu. 7/26/18 9:51pm still b/p:

Love the soft light-saber sounds of flight when one shows up. A former boss had an intact one he claimed to have found in the freezer in the company's garage. Said it must have flown in when he stepped away with freezer door open, geting trapped when he closed it. Never sure about that story.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 7/26/18 9:52pm coelacanth∅:

(i've been stung many times. yellowjackets can start stinging you the moment they land)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 7/26/18 9:52pm melinda:

@flash I agree, thought I haven't seen the fierce side. They do remind me of stealth military aircraft.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 7/26/18 9:54pm coelacanth∅:

a lot of birds are fierce
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 7/26/18 9:55pm coelacanth∅:

much more often than any other i see forest green hummingbirds. gorgeous color; but yeah - military aircraft!
Avatar Thu. 7/26/18 9:56pm Flash Strap:

one landed on my finger in Costa Rica this year, and I nearly died in the ten seconds he just sat there before he realized what I was

That does sound exotic.

there's a mexican restaurant i eat at with outdoor seating and if i'm alone the birds will come onto my table for pieces of tortilla chips. i've sat still enough with one between my fingers that one would've taken it from me. it was about to but i decided i shouldn't encourage them to do that and tossed it to it.

Tomorrow morning on Give the Drummer Some I will be devoting 1/2 the show to celebrating the birthday of beloved South African sax genius Kippie Moeketsi. I’m weeping and joyous already.

And the resident flock of parrots that fly around and make a big racket, are the most exotic we see around here
Avatar Thu. 7/26/18 10:11pm Flash Strap:

I'll be there, Doug! that sounds so glorious
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 7/26/18 10:12pm coelacanth∅:

well, i've never seen a wild parrot on the east coast. not sure i've ever seen one out west either actually.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 7/26/18 10:17pm chresti:

The story goes something like, they, (the parrots), escaped from somewhere around here, in the San Gabriel Valley, (the arboretum?), at one time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 7/26/18 10:17pm coelacanth∅:

and i don't think i've ever seen a glossy ibis either. several species of owls and hawks, occasional eagles, egrets, swans, herons...maybe i'm not looking around enough. it seems like some years i see tons of different birds, other years i don't.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 7/26/18 10:18pm melinda:

I saw the film about the parrots of San Francisco.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 7/26/18 10:18pm coelacanth∅:

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 7/26/18 10:19pm chresti:

They seem to like the liquid amber and chinese elm-tall trees
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 7/26/18 10:21pm chresti:

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 7/26/18 10:23pm coelacanth∅:

Avatar Thu. 7/26/18 10:23pm Flash Strap:

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 7/26/18 10:34pm chresti:

Avatar Thu. 7/26/18 10:41pm Flash Strap:
