@Melinda-I am so sorry! You can get a bereavement fare on an airline to ease the cost of going home, you just need a note from the funeral home. I did that when my grandmother died a while ago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 4/30/18 3:10pm TDK60:

Then Richard Thompson, his guitar sounds like__? What a great album "Bright" is, but if you've never heard it, it's not "bright" like you might think.

@Matt I play solo and in a bunch of groups. I play with Weasel Walter a lot and I've got a new trio w/ Matteo Liberatore & Nicola Hein. & I'm going to start a guitar duo w/ Lydia Lunch soon. I'm extended technique/prepared guitar improv noise etc
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 4/30/18 3:16pm Matt from Springfield:

Never heard of Top Drawer, I'll have to look for that (along w/ Ultimate Spinach, well known in Mass. but I just heard of them a couple weeks ago). And of course "The Genuine Imitation Life Gazette", the Four Seasons "psych" album written with Jake Holmes.

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 4/30/18 3:20pm Matt from Springfield:

@Neil: So many great psych bands in the 60s, some only released one album and never got the proper appreciation since the field was so crowded. Glad you're "excavating" the classics with me!

FWIW, when my mom died I had just flown out to visit some friends in the midwest. Landed, went to a show around the corner from the place and then I was told I had to call back home and heard about it from some crappy payphone at the club across the street that was having an industrial night. Flew out the next morning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 4/30/18 3:38pm JakeGould:

Apropos to nothing, but I think Scott remembers this line… Watched “The Sure Thing” for the first time since I have no idea. I didn’t like it. So tepid and John Cusack wasn't not really a good actor here. But there was one amazing line in reference to a hot gal: “She’s got lovely skin… And so much of it.”

Good rec from Darling Dotty Daughter Lila - it's a typical modern "chill" song, good clear female vocal I'm trying to think who else it reminds me of..."vocal frye"? Is that what you'd call that sound or tone?

Hey Scott, how's your quest to find the best version of "Both Sides Now" going?? Is Bola Sete's version new to you or have you known about it for awhile?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 4/30/18 4:45pm fred:

@Jeff: I agree, there's nothing wrong with (sic). But I find it really grating when the article around it features more than a few grammar errors. Many sites should hire proficient editors/proofreaders
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 4/30/18 4:46pm Matt from Springfield:

I presume a version of "Workin' On A Groovy Thing" is also on that album. That's a good song too. (At work I created a chorus called "Workin' on a du-bi-ous thing"...)

Yes, that was the one from a couple weeks ago! Keep up the good search!

But what's the definitive version of Institutionalized?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 4/30/18 4:59pm Matt from Springfield:

@fred: Several DJs and hosts recorded versions a few summers ago, we can start there... :)

Was it Storck who recorded a French version of it? Any version screamed by a little girl would certainly be the tops for me :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 4/30/18 5:01pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Powwow song in there. Groovy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 4/30/18 5:02pm Scott Williams:

My favorite "Institutionalized"s were Thomas Storck's French version (HEY BUDDY) and The Use feat. Audrey Rose (who, btw, is not a child)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 4/30/18 5:03pm Scott Williams:

Good catch, Rev! Black Lodge singers in the mix
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 4/30/18 5:03pm Matt from Springfield:

Workin' on a pow-wow thing, nice. Trippy-groovy thing too.

@Scott: YES! I was thinking of that version (just found it on your Jan 9 2017 'list). Not a child, but I love that same vibe (I suggested we finally found our "Inauguration headliner"!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 4/30/18 5:03pm Rich in Washington:

That whole record looks snake-themed. I must have it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 4/30/18 5:05pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

The powwow groups = the only thing I miss from living out west. Killer stuff. Bad Medicine would belt out a contest song that could fell an army.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 4/30/18 5:07pm fred:

That track reminded me of A Tribe Called Red. I don't like all of their stuff, but they had a "burn your village to the ground" track that was chilling

Ah, authentic '84, love that "harsh" pre-Midi sound of synths. Electric guitar tones taped, plugged in and synthesized perhaps?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 4/30/18 5:09pm Rich in Washington:

saw a cool DJ/VJ set by a dude called Jackson 2Bears and it was amazing. Very aggro 1st Nations style hip-hop, sample heavy stuff.

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 4/30/18 5:22pm Matt from Springfield:

@Rich: With advances in VR, hopefully we'll have a virtual "organ store" you can walk into and browse, and hear all the old Hammonds and such.
Avatar Mon. 4/30/18 5:22pm Pen:

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 4/30/18 5:25pm Rich in Washington:

@Matt from Springfield: my mall's organ store was right next door to Hickory Farms, so as long as I can have cheese samples from trays held by hostesses in Tyrollian attire, I say yes to those advances in VR technology.

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 4/30/18 5:27pm fred:

@Matt: With Thiel and his Palantir in control, that organ store is coming soon. Though I guess ours will be for sale
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 4/30/18 5:30pm Matt from Springfield:

@fred: So long as we have an emulator of the organs tones (may have to license them if they're still under copyright), I think you should be able to purchase an organ, "drag" it home, while the emulator is downloaded to your own software. "Play" the organ anytime!

Wow 60 Clarinets! Listened to Sean McCann interviewed on the Free Form Freakout podcast over the weekend. He talked a bit about Morrow and the process of editing this record.
