15 more minutes of the morning set on OZ, then switch the turner to fmu.. is there nothing more wonderful than music??
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/5/17 8:46am Jeff Golick:

Not that I've found, @annie... though friendship is also pretty good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/5/17 8:52am annie:

... oh, yes... that, too. i missed out on that through my life, a spot of it here and there, blessedly, but rare..
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/5/17 8:53am annie:

i guess music has always been the constant in my life..
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/5/17 8:57am Jeff Golick:

Yes, music is incredibly reliable that way.

Couple of folks on my Twitter feed were discussing how music does absolutely nothing for them, with no evidence that this was any sort of psychobiological condition, and I was like, whaaaaaat?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/5/17 9:10am listener james from westwood:

If I didn't work, drive, read, etc with music on in the background I'd curl into a ball.

Hi and welcome, @listener james and @fred!

Maybe some will join me and push you over the 50% bar. The station doesn't need much more, but it does need it
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/5/17 9:54am Jeff Golick:

An excellent suggestion, @fred. The station's goal is now just under $11,000 away. Every little bit really does help get us there.

Even though the AACM credo was for original music, this never meant an abandonment of the past. Clearly.
  Sun. 11/5/17 10:17am Dean:

Yesterday the local college station played three Neil Young tunes in a row. At the back-announce, the DJ reported that a listener had called concerned that NY had died. Nope. She was responding to something she had read about NY's Bridge School support.

Original versus revival: What's New in the Tradition, no?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/5/17 10:19am Jeff Golick:

Yah. Welcome and helloooo, @Dean.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 11/5/17 10:24am Brian in UK:

Afternoon, morning, whenever. Jeff and cohorts in cahoots.

Just reading a book about the American architect Louis Kahn. In the Fifties he came to the realisation of seeing things 'from the begining'. Sounds obvious but very rarely happens. You have to be very skilled to be able to step back and strip away previous knowledge to refresh and start again. This can apply to music but rarely does. I am imagining John Coltrane to be an example. Frank Lloyd Wright in architecture.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/5/17 10:25am Jeff Golick:

Well, hello, @Brian in UK.

Seeing things from the beginning sounds like a lot of work.

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 11/5/17 10:31am Brian in UK:

Well I think it is to be questioning the very precepts of what it is we are trying to achieve.

I knew I should have gone for a ride on the motorcycle this morning. Mind you that would have started the Persig bug asking what is Quality.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/5/17 10:33am Jeff Golick:

@fred: well you're better than me. Plus, one never knows when one has had an impact...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 11/5/17 10:34am Brian in UK:

fred, do not be so hard on yourself.
  Sun. 11/5/17 10:36am Dean:

Two or three years ago I had to attend a meeting at UC San Diego. The conference room took in a view of the coast and Kahn's Salk Institute. Maybe it expressed some nature of beginnings, but it certainly was impressive. It's too bad we aren't more routinely exposed to architectural history, which has much to offer about aesthetics, engineering, project management, social arrangements...the gamut, pretty much.

Was finally disposed yesterday to listen to Havergal Brian's massive first symphony, the second half of which is a tribute to High Gothic cathedrals.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 11/5/17 10:40am Brian in UK:

Dean, you have been to the Salk. It looks wonderful. Imagine the sun going down there.

Havergill Brian was born in Harrow where I grew up. His music was sponsored by Phil Lesh, I believe
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 11/5/17 10:43am fred:

45%! Whoever did this, thank you
  Sun. 11/5/17 10:44am Dean:

Not exactly "to" the Salk, but "by" (as I walked from hotel to meeting) and "above" (from meeting room). That's great to learn about Lesh! I first heard of Brian from Paul Rapaport's review in a late 1990 issue of Fanfare, in which Rapaport wrote, "[T]his recording is one of the most important in the entire history of recorded sound." Er, well, okay. Rapaport admits his view is hardly objective, inasmuch as he had a hand in assuring the recording would emerge.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/5/17 10:44am Jeff Golick:

That would be listener Brian in the UK! THANKS SO MUCH, @Brian!
  Sun. 11/5/17 10:46am Dean:

Yep, George Lewis.
  Sun. 11/5/17 10:46am Dean:

Correction: Rapoport.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 11/5/17 10:48am Brian in UK:

I thought it should be Brian Havergill!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/5/17 10:48am listener james from westwood:

Whoo! Just finished getting chili going in the slow cooker. That D:O and Abrams were on in the background will guarantee this to be a delectable batch.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 11/5/17 10:49am Brian in UK:

Is there a proof editor in the house?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 11/5/17 10:50am Brian in UK:

@james stew today here, it is one of those kind of days.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/5/17 10:51am Jeff Golick:

Hungry.
  Sun. 11/5/17 10:54am Dean:

@ljfw: Slow cooker chili was yesterday's dinner here! Used andouille sausage and one hella hot jalapeno.

@Brian in UK: That LAT article is gold! Goes to show what a treasure the Dead were, or at least Lesh. It's the Marco Polo record I played yesterday. I don't recall seeing a reference to the foundation in the notes. Will check again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 11/5/17 10:55am Brian in UK:

Dean, love the idea of Lesh listening to a classical bootleg after all those that have stalked the Dead.
  Sun. 11/5/17 10:55am Dean:

The LAT article indicates Brian wrote ~20 symphonies. I think it's closer to 32. The guy lived a long time, and was very prolific.

@holland oats my excuse for any typos is that one of the cats is walking all over the keyboard, keening for tea, bit early yet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/5/17 10:58am Jeff Golick:

Perfect.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/5/17 10:58am listener james from westwood:

@Brian in UK: Stew and the shorter days go together so well.

@Dean: A friend of mine around here uses andouille in his; I've not had the pleasure of trying it yet. Mine is turkey chili with three jalapeños, an onion, and black & kidney beans. Will keep me warm after morning frost becomes more rule than exception.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/5/17 10:59am listener james from westwood:

@holland: That @Bodegacats_ account is a blessing.
  Sun. 11/5/17 11:00am Dean:

@ljfw: I usually use turkey, but had ground beef in the 'fridge. Onion, celery, orange bell pepper, garlic, kidney beans, diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, apple juice, and the last of a carton of chicken broth. A bit of brewed coffee, too. Sometimes I add an ounce or so of dark chocolate.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 11/5/17 11:01am Brian in UK:

Now if you were talking andouillette, not many peoples choice. Not seen over here in the wild.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 11/5/17 11:02am Brian in UK:

Started making chili with beef pieces not mince and the coffee/chocolate routine. Bluddy rich.
  Sun. 11/5/17 11:04am Dean:

Had to look up "andouillette." Found it at a blog called Things That Stink.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/5/17 11:05am Jeff Golick:

Only an hour left and I wanted to close with another 30-min solo piece. Not sure how to bring this one in safely...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 11/5/17 11:06am Brian in UK:

Dean only the French or Chinese.
  Sun. 11/5/17 11:09am Dean:

I imagine if there were a restaurant in town called Andouillette a not insignificant portion of the population, myself included, would figure it was a cute diminutive reference to New Orleans.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/5/17 11:09am listener james from westwood:

In my case, big can of unseasoned tomato sauce, 2 cloves garlic, 1 med onion, 1 bottle of beer, the turkey and beans, the peppers, and spices. Different friend of mine will do the chocolate thing in the form of cocoa powder.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 11/5/17 11:09am listener james from westwood:

May make cornbread later or tomorrow, too. Gonna be good eatin' up in here.
  Sun. 11/5/17 11:10am Dean:

Or substitute molasses for chocolate/cocoa.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 11/5/17 11:13am Brian in UK:

Dean, thinking of going to Ely Cathedral in the week. The Octagon is a thing of wonder, how does it stay up. Pendentives are the answer I am discovering from my childish reading of the subject.

Inspiring.
  Sun. 11/5/17 11:32am Dean:

Oh, man, @Brian in UK, that'd be nice. Long ago I tried to take in a few High Gothic wonders: Chartres, Reims, Notre Dame. I attended a concert in Paris at Sainte-Chapelle. At one time I was poised to go to architecture school, even admitted at a school, until I realized I am no artist, and that what really interests me is the history. For Gothic cathedrals you could do worse than start with Hans Jantzen's High Gothic.

Jeff, thank you. Hope everyone has a good week.

Alberti is one of my heroes. Read Joan Gadol's or Anthony Grafton's biographies. I have a copy of Ten Books, too.

Thanks Jeff ! I actually hadn't heard the Art Ensemble before!.
  Sun. 11/5/17 11:57am Dean:

I remember a trip to Florence when I dropped into a liquor store to buy a bottle of water. The bag in which the clerk put the bottle had an image of a Florentine Alberti building on it. As I walked out of the liquor store I looked across the plaza, where the very building stood!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 11/5/17 11:57am fred:

Jeff, can you pull out a worthy pun now that Doug is around?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 11/5/17 11:58am Brian in UK:

Dean the odd thing is that Alberti based a lot on Vetruvius and that was the only text that survived. What else was there?

  Sun. 11/5/17 12:00pm Dean:

I think you're right, @Brian in UK. Consulting my copy of Hanno-Walter Kruft's A History of Architectural Theory from Vitruvius to the Present, I see that the first couple of chapters are devoted to Vitruvius, followed by one about Alberti.

Who was that masked DJ, I'd like to shake his hand.

There was the medieval chronicler of architecture, Villard de Honnecourt, but he didn't develop a system like Vitruvius or Alberti.
