Good morning Jeff and listeners. Unfortunately I can't raise my pledge because I hit a monthly cap on my card
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 10/29/17 9:10am Jeff Golick:

Not to worry, @fred! Just glad you are here, and completely understand that you are a strong booster of the station.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 10/29/17 9:38am fred:

Ayler's sound is so unmistakably his
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 10/29/17 9:49am Jeff Golick:

You got that right, @fred.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 10/29/17 10:00am listener james from westwood:

Killer first hour. One great feature of this show, vs. some jazz shows/stations in the NYC area, is how welcoming it's always been. Too many hosts of said NYC jazz shows have made me want to kick in the car radio b/c they're so gatekeeper-ish. If there's ever been two genres that are made by all, for all, they're blues and jazz. Don't wall 'em off or put 'em in a tower, NYC stations!
  Sun. 10/29/17 10:01am Gary:

Good morning!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 10/29/17 10:03am listener james from westwood:

That is indeed swag for life! I wish I could give that much a month. It's spread over 12. Will revise if I hit 6 lucky numbers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 10/29/17 10:07am fred:

@james: pretty much the overall WFMU vibe. When they act as gatekeepers, it's mainly to distract folks from the gaping hole they tore in the fence a few steps away
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 10/29/17 10:08am Jeff Golick:

Thanks, @ljfw! And ha, yeah, @fred.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 10/29/17 10:10am Jeff Golick:

She is so good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 10/29/17 10:12am listener james from westwood:

What I've heard in the voices of NYC jazz DJs, I've heard in the voices of science fiction fans, comic book and roleplaying game store staff, geek tastemakers, film writers, and, sadly, record dealers—smug, exclusionary, always male, always moving the goalposts of who can join their clubs. That shit needs to take a long one-way walk to a shallow hole.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 10/29/17 10:15am Jeff Golick:

Amen, @ljfw.
  Sun. 10/29/17 10:16am Gary:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 10/29/17 10:22am Jeff Golick:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 10/29/17 10:23am Jeff Golick:

PS. Even listening by phone, the app should show you what's playing, I think...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 10/29/17 10:29am doctorjazz:

@ljfw, what jazz station in NYC do you listen to? As far as I know, WBGO is the only full-time jazz station here. The only other station with some jazz programming is WKCR, which is the station of Columbia University. Most of their programming is by students, who seem to be learning about jazz as they go along, but the Guru there is Phil Schapp. He has some regular shows. He is incredibly knowledgeable, but can be intolerable when he starts talking /lecturing for a half hour or so (which is a frequent occurrence). Actually learned a lot from him about Jazz early on (but can't listen to him these days)
I Love wfmu, but I actually do wish there was more jazz programming here.

Ahoy Jeff and scaremongers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 10/29/17 10:30am fred:

Just a 't' more would have made this weird. John Zorn writing a piece about Mattin would melt what's left of my brain

Good day to you, @Brian in UK! Welcome.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 10/29/17 10:31am Jeff Golick:

At the rate Zorn is producing music, it's only a matter of time, @fred.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 10/29/17 10:32am Jeff Golick:

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 10/29/17 10:38am doctorjazz:

Fiveash had a great ear on his GTDR show for occasional choice jazz cuts, as introduced by the barrel-aged voice of Richard Burton. Long Rally was also often good for some jazz.

interesting change of pace for the last set, very peaceful (usually rock on out), enjoying it!
Have a great week, all!

Gotta mix it up, @doctorjazz.

I read that Tyshawn Sorey got a "genius" grant. Worthy

@Dean, always seems to be a Parking Lot Sale out there-doesn't anyone like to shop in the store?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 10/29/17 11:54am doctorjazz:

I read that as well, @Fred.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 10/29/17 11:55am Jeff Golick:

Yes, yes, @fred: www.macfound.org...

Going to a Tom Paxton 80th birthday tribute concert tonight, should be fun (Tom Chapin is playing there, his pianist is my wife's cousin).
  Sun. 10/29/17 11:55am Dean:

Well, they've scheduled a few sales that were rained out. We love shopping the store, for sure, but the parking lot sale brings a few handfuls of vendors with stock outside the typical DH inventory.

Down Home is the retail space connected to the Arhoolie Records label.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 10/29/17 11:56am doctorjazz:

They should have a TON of great stuff.
Avatar Sun. 10/29/17 11:59am glenn:

arhoolie always has great sales.
  Sun. 10/29/17 11:59am Dean:

Oh, yes, they do, but the store has, I'd say, an average footprint, square-foot-wise. Owner Chris Strachwiz often features stuff from his personal collection. Still, the focus is folk/world/old rock, with enough classical/jazzz/r&b/etc. to keep me on my toes.

@doc is Tom Chapin, Harry's brother?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 10/29/17 12:00pm doctorjazz:

Good for me I'm NOT near that store...
Tom is Harry's brother, @Brian.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 10/29/17 12:01pm doctorjazz:

Tom's main gig is children's music, fun stuff. He does adult stuff as well, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 10/29/17 12:02pm Brian in UK:

Got me thinking of Harry now.
  Sun. 10/29/17 12:02pm Dean:

Though I never acquired this Riechmann LP, I clearly remember its arrival in the record store where I worked in the late '70s. We played it in-store quite a bit.

Thanks, Jeff!
