Sounds from the archive of the future, sonic drilling into the past, dissonant rumbling, lyrical melodies, noises (human, animal, mechanical, digital) inscrutable yet honest, desultory but consistent.

Inner Ear Detour:
Good evening, folks! |
![]() |
![]() Haven't heard this Spectrum, I thought I had everything Sonic Boom had put out.... |
![]() I have had some close calls, NGH. A gift of moose meat nearly got me locked up at the Maine border one time. Never did eat moose (never actually wanted to!) Canadians.
![]() |
![]() I've only had moose jerky, now I'm curious.... |

Inner Ear Detour:
As SeanG said, it was the late great Jim Dickinson |
![]() |
![]() hi folks! Hi Ear! |
![]() XLN! | |
![]() |
![]() Was that Jim Dickinson on vocals? Or as producer? Have not ever heard that track before. Almost thought it was Alan Vega at first for sure. |

![]() greetings David and Inner Ear Worms always a pleasure, David |
![]() |
![]() I love these fylkingen collections.... |
![]() |
![]() These glass jars are stressing me out. |
![]() |
![]() Midlife-crisis cakes, too? |
![]() |
![]() Pies are better than cakes. |
![]() |
![]() @JakeGould: No debating that. |
![]() Mincemeat | |
![]() |
![]() Now I want to make spicy veggie chorizo and sweet potato pie. In maybe next weekend when I'm unpacked. It's so much easier to put furniture back together w/ another pair of hands. More unpacking for me,, t'will be back later! |
![]() |
![]() yes, cow pies |
![]() |
![]() No suet for me, thank you! |
![]() |
![]() i was compelled to try my niece's pecan-coconut-chocolate pie tonight. i'll have a regular pecan pie over that any day. too sweet. |
![]() |
![]() @NGH: Florida, right? I can't say I'm jealous, but whereabouts? |
![]() |
![]() @coel that must have been intense. Regular pecan pie is quite sweet. |
![]() |
![]() I think cake and pie are equally good. |
![]() |
![]() Well made pecan pie isn't too sweet. But, yes, most folks don't know how to make good pecan pie, or pastries in general. Let the sweetness be suggestive, I say. Not invasive. |
![]() |
![]() yeah even she, a sweets/carb fiend, thinks it "needs more pecans". |
![]() |
![]() i agree βrian (on all points) |
![]() Is a Yip Roc like a jeprok in the RP?
![]() |
![]() N cups of sugar * 0.45 = just about right. |
![]() |
![]() I cut way back on sugar years ago so a mildly sweet pecan pie would be fine with me, but it is traditionally a sugar bomb. Which I enjoyed with gusto as a child in Texas. |
![]() |
![]() Gainesville, FL. pop: 150K (w/in the city limits), 1/3 are students or are employed by the University. I moved in a older suburban neighborhood w/ professionals and professors, and only a 10 minute walk from the downtown where the restaurants, bars, galleries, and performance spaces are located. I only need to drive to work, and it's a 10-12 minute commute, and I have a flexible schedule. Thanks for asking. There are signs all over my neighborhood that say in Spanish, English, and Arabic, "No matter where you come from, we're happy you are our neighbors". I'm happy so far... |
![]() |
![]() @Inner Ear Detour, thanks! |
![]() Then you would also not like "Shoo Fly" pie... a quart of molasses baked in lard-informed crusts?
![]() |
![]() lard-informed crust, haha |
![]() |
![]() Sugar makes my intestines squirm like a nest of snakes, so I only indulge in sweets once a month. |
![]() |
![]() @NGH: Far out. I had a college friend who grew up there. Yes, he was deeply scarred, but yes, times have changed since. Watch out for those sinkholes! |
![]() |
![]() Buttermilk pie is also very sweet. Another fave from my days as a sugar fiend. |
![]() |
![]() More great crime jazz. No one talks about rumbles anymore. |
![]() |
![]() @melinda: I wanna rumble against neo-Nazis. I wanna rumble against the Klan. I wanna rumble against white hate wherever I can. |
![]() |
![]() Yeah, the downtown is nearly five times the size it was when I was in uni, so there is an actual town feel to it for the non-students, which is nice. (the downtown was just reviving right before I left). |
![]() Shepherds' pie is sugar free, and hard to find. Hard to beat on a cold night in the North Country...
![]() |
![]() I make a mean Mexican fusion shepherd's pie. |
![]() |
![]() i like a good banana cream or chocolate cream pie. a have a piece of one or the other about once every 4 years. |
![]() Now THAT I wanna try!

Carmichael:
Heya David and listeners. Just returned from Lake Tahoe. Copious amounts of people, and I'm generally anti-throng, but it was fun
![]() |
![]() Cream pies are good. The best coconut cream pie I had was at a health food store cafe in Fairfield, Iowa. Of all places. |
![]() |
![]() @Carm I'm anti-thong. |
![]() |
![]() haha! i just saw that - "who's afraid of justin beiber"...not me; i'm just afraid i might hear his music! |
![]() |
![]() melinda i almost mentioned coconut cream in there, but i haven't tasted a good one in several decades. 'loved it as a child though. |
![]() Blueberry is in season now... how can you hate blueberry pie?
![]() |
![]() when my favorite cafe friends try to push the apple pie on me, i say i'm holding out for blueberry. |

I had a crumbly cherry pie last night. Twas fabulous.

Carmichael:
My wife and I are considering producing a documentary on the marionberry. What a bunch of political intrigue there ...
![]() |
![]() ...my sister made some sweet potato pies last winter. (from sweets that we grew) there's a pie that is very delicious and even pretty good for you. |
![]() |
![]() We stopped at a U-pick blueberry grower about a month ago, on the way to camping up north. Boy howdy, campfire blueberry pancakes are a treat! Maple syrup, of course. But not too much. |
![]() |
![]() Anyone who hates blueberry pie is a douchebag. I saw that at on a sampler once. |
![]() |
![]() Blueberry pie is especially vulnerable to over-sweetening. It needs tender love. |
![]() zactly, Jake. Just get a small piece if your diet does not allow. What my Gramma called "no thank you" helpings of fruit and veg!
![]() |
![]() "douchebag" might be a stronger word than i'd use - and i'm not known for softening my opinion! |
![]() |
![]() I love, love, love sweet potatoes, and I will defend them from added sugar. They're already sweet. It's in their name. Don't fuck with sweet potatoes. |
![]() |
![]() I just eat blueberries straight. A few weeks ago the batch I bought started fermenting, and they tasted kind of good. Like little nuggets of blueberry booze. |
![]() |
![]() Carmichael i don't know enough about marion berries that i can say it'd make a good documentary; but i can say that that's one hybrid i can get behind. |
![]() |
![]() melinda so you enjoy getting a bit tipsy after all! |
![]() Vaccinium angustifolium is the wild form we find all over our farm in Canada. You cannot believe how good they taste fresh! Wymans of Maine is harvesting them for Walmart resale, but not the same 6 months later frozen. How could they be?
Sun. 8/13/17 9:48pm
Carmichael:
@coel, just google the history. In Portland, they're almost a political party.
![]() |
![]() I remember a friend offering up a jar of marionberry jam right around the time of the scandal, and until then I didn't know there was a berry so named. It was funny. |
![]() |
![]() I think the southernmost limit of naturally occurring wild blueberries is a natural warning line. Beyond that, you are in peril. |
![]() |
![]() @coel getting drunk is fun! I just don't do it much anymore, better for my health. |
![]() |
![]() βrian, i eat baked sweets frequently - with flax seed oil and ume vinegar on 'em. my sister is not like me in that regard, but i don't think she could've added much sugar (or maple syrup, probably) to those pies. |
![]() |
![]() Great show, David! |
![]() |
![]() A sweet memory is my Sweet returning from Maine with two 5-gallon buckets of wild blueberries. |
![]() Until the damn fruit flies find out what you have and they want..
![]() |
![]() "Nevadar?" |
![]() |
![]() Carm i'll look into it. i'm surprised i never heard of it if it's a natural food related scandal. 'right up my alley |
Sun. 8/13/17 9:56pm
Carmichael:
Yay, Fairport! Mr. Mandl may also indulge in this fare.
![]() |
![]() @Old Dave: they were gone, gone, gone within two days. |
![]() |
![]() one could easily collect 4-5 shopping bags full of blueberries in minnewaska state park, but it's illegal. |
![]() XLN, I say again | |
![]() Thanks, David. | |
![]() |
![]() Thanks David! don't be a stranger |
