This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Rubber Docky, Hi good evening
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 7/27/17 6:52pm doctorjazz:

Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 7:00pm Flash Strap:

Okay, here we go
  Thu. 7/27/17 7:00pm Dean:

Mentioned this on another comment board here today: Sly & Robbie are playing at the joint behind my house on Saturday night, when I have to collect my kid from the airport.
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 7:03pm Flash Strap:

Hi there Dean! damn, the Revolutionaries themselves
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 7:04pm Flash Strap:

Noel is Alton's kid, btw, and I'm pretty sure Mittoo is on this session. I think they were both up in Canada at this time
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 7:05pm Flash Strap:

backup vocs are amazing
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 7/27/17 7:06pm doctorjazz:

Hey Dean, your kids can fend for themselves-they'll understand, it's SLY and ROBBIE!!!!
Avatar    Thu. 7/27/17 7:06pm hyde:

fire bomb!
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 7:06pm Flash Strap:

those kids deserve to see Sly and Robbie, take em with ya
  Thu. 7/27/17 7:06pm Dean:

Heh, my kids would *love* to fend for themselves.
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 7:07pm Flash Strap:

Hyde !
  Thu. 7/27/17 7:07pm Dean:

If we stick our heads out our bedroom window we'll hear them. Last night we heard the Dead tribute band noodling past midnight. Hey, free music!
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 7:09pm Flash Strap:

This dub has such an epic rollout
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 7:10pm Flash Strap:

you'll definitely hear that famous bass if nothing else
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 7:16pm Flash Strap:

that's a hell of a sample-style action right there my heads
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 7/27/17 7:18pm doctorjazz:

This is GREAT stuff!
Avatar    Thu. 7/27/17 7:19pm hyde:

i'm feeling like maybe i shouldn't have burned through my whole stash during Bodega Pop last night ;)
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 7:23pm Flash Strap:

@Doc: music to my face

@Hyde: this is saddest thing to hear. i bleed for you
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 7/27/17 7:26pm doctorjazz:

Take 5! (in 4/4)
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 7:27pm Flash Strap:

haha it's amazing isn't it
Avatar    Thu. 7/27/17 7:28pm hyde:

@Flash heh, it's cool. i'm back to the land of legality (aka Massachusetts) tomorrow. but I may have held some back if i knew you were gonna go dub tonite!
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 7:31pm Flash Strap:

well i'm pretty much incapable of combining the stuff with radio responsibilities, so I join you in dubbing with a bald head tonight

though rum is Being Had, to be sure
Avatar    Thu. 7/27/17 7:35pm hyde:

rum seems appropriate. i actually finally found a store that carries the Lemon Hart 151 that Beachbum Berry is always calling for in his recipes. maybe i can finally make one of those drinks right.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 7/27/17 7:36pm listener james from westwood:

Whoo, a bit late but happy to be here! Evening, all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 7/27/17 7:37pm doctorjazz:

Time to leave the office, take you along in the car (phone app), take care, all.
I and I am going now.
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 7:37pm Flash Strap:

damn, i've never seen that anywhere. we're stuck in ABC store world down here so variety is not the word

Oh better late than never, Listener James!
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 7:38pm Flash Strap:

Love this popcorn. Best popcorn
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 7/27/17 7:38pm doctorjazz:

(this is too cute, this Popcorn...)
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 7:38pm geezerette:

Hey Mon!
Avatar    Thu. 7/27/17 7:38pm hyde:

@Flash i've prowled many a liquor store looking for it and even searched for it online. just got lucky.
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 7:38pm Flash Strap:

That's great Doc, I think we're in the mood for a ride!
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 7:39pm Flash Strap:

too cute, or coolest track ever? let it sink into your blood cells and show you the light
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 7:39pm Flash Strap:

Hi Geezerette!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 7/27/17 7:40pm doctorjazz:

Too cute, but that's a GOOD thing (kept me sitting in my office longer, couldn't turn it off)
Avatar    Thu. 7/27/17 7:50pm hyde:

i'm currently marveling at the idea there's a Shalin Temple dub that i assume comes from martial arts movies and a Return of Django song that comes i assume from spaghetti westerns
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 7:55pm Flash Strap:

much agreed on that point, Doc!

without a doubt, Hyde! Lots of martial arts references in 70s reggae, lot's of western stuff too, esp. with early Upsetters albums: Return of Django, Clint Eastwood, Eastwood Rides Again, and The Good, The Bad And The Upsetters
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 7:56pm Flash Strap:

yikes, how did i just type "lot's"

sorry everybody
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 7:58pm geezerette:

During the Thunderclap my husband said,"Haha, sounds like Martin Denny"!
:)
Avatar    Thu. 7/27/17 7:59pm hyde:

dub, kung fu movies and spaghetti westerns is the real melting pot
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 7:59pm Flash Strap:

for years there I had a bizarre misconception based on some incomplete info that Mighty Sparrow was drummer on this session, but it's a guy named Sparrow Martin
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 8:01pm Flash Strap:

@G: that guy knows what I'm talkin about!

@hyde: it's astonishing how postcolonial/third worldist those Kung Fu movies are, and how aggressively Spaghetti Westerns deconstruct the american historical mythos
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 8:04pm Flash Strap:

@G again: seriously it's such an interesting connection that exists between dub and exotica: both are background/atmosphere music but also make for active listening (with moments that jump out and grab you when you might have zoned out), transportive and categorically psychedelic, fascinated with the potential of the studio as an instrument
Avatar    Thu. 7/27/17 8:06pm hyde:

@Flash though really most of the spaghetti westerns were written by commies, so that angle isn't all that surprising ;)
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 8:08pm Flash Strap:

I love in Django when he machine guns a hundred red-hooded klan members... i know Corbucci is a lot less sophisticated than Hawks, but damn if that's not a better message than Rio Bravo
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 8:10pm Flash Strap:

the aesthetic of the dubs on this record is basically perfect in my opinion. This is understated excellence right here
Avatar    Thu. 7/27/17 8:12pm hyde:

Corbucci really seems like he was a total communist. the bankers and real estate owners are always the worst people in his movies. have you ever seem Companeros, te movie of his where Jack Palance plays a pot smoking mercenary who is in love with his falcon? it's not the best Corbucci, but it's amazing
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 7/27/17 8:13pm melinda:

Hola!
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 8:15pm Flash Strap:

No but I really want to! I've heard it's wild. I agree he seems to be the most openly radical of his cohort. Corbucci is a comrade

Hi Melinda!
Avatar    Thu. 7/27/17 8:19pm hyde:

hi melinda!
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 8:19pm Flash Strap:

This record is a swampy masterpiece too
Avatar    Thu. 7/27/17 8:20pm hyde:

for Corbucci i also really really like The Great Silence and Navajo Joe
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 8:22pm Flash Strap:

Navajo Joe isn't just amazing, doesn't just have the super-rare native protagonist, it has probably the most intense and awesome Morricone soundtrack... love that one. Need to see the other though
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 8:24pm Flash Strap:

burt reynolds is pretty good in it, in a way
Avatar    Thu. 7/27/17 8:27pm hyde:

TCM would show Navajo Joe periodically and i would always annoy the gf for a day or so afterwards by repeating Nava-jo Joe Nava-jo Joe for days.

i also love Nicoletta Machiavelli, who is amazing in that movie and then when she got typecast basically said well, screw it if you guys aren't giving me better parts to play, i'm not acting anymore.
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 8:27pm Flash Strap:

oh shit, Great Silence is the one with Kinski, that's right! man I need to see that ASAP
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 8:29pm Flash Strap:

love the synthi sound on this record
Avatar    Thu. 7/27/17 8:29pm hyde:

@Flash i actually think Great Silence is maybe his best movie
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 8:30pm Flash Strap:

Corbucci's or Kinksi's?
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 8:33pm Flash Strap:

synthi sound SO GOOD
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 7/27/17 8:35pm melinda:

Yes, synthi!
Avatar    Thu. 7/27/17 8:36pm hyde:

@Flash Corbucci's. Kinski's greatest work is Aguirre!
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 8:42pm Doug Schulkind:

I dub you very much.
  Thu. 7/27/17 8:44pm Dean:

www.dubdubdub.jm

How come nobody owns it?
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 8:44pm Flash Strap:

Dub Schulkind! Hello
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 8:46pm Flash Strap:

Aguirre is definitely the best Kinksi, yeah. Not even Fitzcarraldo can top it. I like Cobra Verde a lot though
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 8:47pm Flash Strap:

@Dean: boggles the mind
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 8:51pm Flash Strap:

that Gussie record has such a direct & visceral sound, real street cruising funk
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 7/27/17 8:52pm Little Danny:

Flash! Fellow explorers! Late but still highly stoked to be here
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 8:52pm Flash Strap:

Hi LD! Welcome back to radio land brother
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 7/27/17 8:53pm Little Danny:

Thank you! I'm so happy to be back
  Thu. 7/27/17 8:54pm Dean:

Thanks to doctorjazz I recently picked up the Trojan rare dub comp, 3CDs, to begin to make inroads on this terrain. Like so many genres, I have a hard time starting a collection, due to the vastness of the catalog.
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 8:54pm geezerette:

Evan@8:04: Beautifully put! My husband, who's a sound engineer, agrees completely. Perhaps especially ,"...with the potential of the studio as an instrument."
cheers!
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 8:55pm Flash Strap:

I like that comp, Dean, lots of cool stuff on it
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 8:58pm Flash Strap:

@G: right on

Guitar on this one! Fire!
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 9:00pm Flash Strap:

i can never resist playing my main man Tapper Zukie
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 9:00pm Flash Strap:

"education is what we need... education is the topic of the day!"

so awesome
  Thu. 7/27/17 9:01pm Dean:

Recordings that make me think of studio-as-instrument, albeit where the studio is not designed for recording: Fritz Hauser's Solodrumming, which was recorded in an atrium encased in glass, and Stuart Dempster's recordings in a cistern in Washington state.
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 9:04pm Flash Strap:

that reminds me of Arthur Lyman's preferred spot, the Kaiser aluminum half-dome (tho that was definitely designed to play music)

also that guy from Hawkwind who did an album of himself playing flute in the great pyramid (and that other guy who did the exact same thing, the jazz flautist)

i want to hear these recordings you reference
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 9:05pm geezerette:

Non-instruments as instruments also.

Evan, Paul Horn?
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 9:06pm Flash Strap:

yes, that's the one!
  Thu. 7/27/17 9:07pm Dean:

Nik Turner. I have that album. Probably ought to listen to it again. Paul Horn, of course, did one earlier at the same location.
  Thu. 7/27/17 9:08pm Dean:

Er, yeah, Paul Horn is the jazz flautist.
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 9:09pm Flash Strap:

Yes! Nik Turner. I like them both in theory, but find them both sort of dull in practice. Tho they do have their moments, and the concept goes a long way towards lending a mystic aura
  Thu. 7/27/17 9:10pm Dean:

I read Fanfare nowadays with regularity. Reviews often comment on how the recording venue improves or detracts from the experience of the recording. For example, the Barbican is evidently a notoriously bad venue for sound, and reviewers will note where recording sound quality suffers when it is the site of the performance.
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 9:11pm geezerette:

Speaking of improvised instruments; original steel drums, whiskey jugs in jug bands...
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 9:14pm Flash Strap:

ah here we go: time for some exposure to the Mudie orchestral sound
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 9:15pm Flash Strap:

this is one of the most exquisite tracks in the genre, total exotica
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 9:15pm geezerette:

!!! :D
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 9:17pm Flash Strap:

this whole album is a colossus
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 7/27/17 9:18pm Little Danny:

This is so great
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 9:21pm Flash Strap:

Mudie was the first guy in the scene to use string arrangements and things like that, it's his calling card. this is from a 1970 compilation of earlier singles. he's cool as hell, used to run an amusement park
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 9:21pm Flash Strap:

I love that track, LD
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 9:24pm Flash Strap:

this song, just, wow... a lot of emotion packed in this one somehow
  Thu. 7/27/17 9:24pm Dean:

OT, but I wonder if anybody has attempted a dub remix of Tangerine Dream and the like.
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 9:24pm geezerette:

Me too. Vocal knocks me out.
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 9:26pm Flash Strap:

I love Jackie Mittoo, I'll never get tired of him. I know opinions on that vary, but I'm a Mittooboy till the end of days
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 9:27pm Flash Strap:

@dean: i know when I'm blazing my chalice, I like to run random songs through effects pedals into a scratchy amp and just dub them out in real time. I've messed with Tangerine Dream, but also Bobby Darin. No one is safe
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 9:27pm geezerette:

High style.
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 9:29pm Flash Strap:

what this track helps reveal is, what a great song From Russia With Love is, just at its base level
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 9:31pm geezerette:

Same!
  Thu. 7/27/17 9:34pm Dean:

A dare, @Flash Strap: Gidon Kremer's recent EMI traversal of the sonatas and partitas.
  Thu. 7/27/17 9:36pm Dean:

Er, make that ECM.

Heh, Kissinger. Just wrapped up the Nixon bio I've been reading. I sure wish somebody would, uh, remix that guy.
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 9:38pm Flash Strap:

I find it irresistible that "Kissinger" is immediately followed on the album by a remix called "Death Sentence"

But just to make sure, I put them right after Mittoo's "Sniper"

can't believe he still has a head
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 9:39pm Flash Strap:

i will check that ECM thing out
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 9:41pm Flash Strap:

bird calls!
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 9:42pm geezerette:

I've never heard this! It's incredible.
Just thinking it reminded me of Fleischer cartoons.
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 9:44pm Flash Strap:

i totally get that! esp. the Cab Calloway ones
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 7/27/17 9:44pm Little Danny:

There's a brilliant version of "Africa" on Silvestre's deep Afro-Cuban "Oriza (Afro-Cuban Rhythms)" LP:
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 9:45pm Flash Strap:

whoa i need to hear that!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 7/27/17 9:48pm Little Danny:

You would love it methinks! Rootsy Afro-Cuban percussion/chants with arrangements that lean towards the jazz/exotica end of the spectrum
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 9:49pm Flash Strap:

well that's speakin my favorite language LD
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 9:49pm geezerette:

Evan, exactly. 52nd St meets Klezmer. ( !!! )
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 9:51pm geezerette:

Fleischer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 7/27/17 9:52pm Little Danny:

@Flash: Oriza LP located; "Africa" will be featured during first set!
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 9:53pm geezerette:

Great show!
Avatar    Thu. 7/27/17 9:53pm hyde:

great show. thanks!
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 10:00pm Flash Strap:

thanks all! see you in that Blue Room!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 7/27/17 10:01pm Little Danny:
