Ken, my mother's parents were said to be Croatian. (Her stepfather was something of a wheel in the Croatian Fraternal Union, based in Pittsburgh.) But then some years ago after their passing, I was looking at a home movie of Grandma dancing with little me on vacation in Lake George, making the "woo-woo-woo" with the hand & mouth, and, having heard about the Lost Tribe of Roanoke, realized we were actually Croatan Indians.

My favourite Kylie song is Confide in Me. It's AMAZING. There's a French version too, which, obviously, is better. Last year we were in Old Compton St when Kylie was filming a video. She had to sashay down the street, pretending to be oblivious to the hundreds of people gawking at her.

I saw Tina Turner back in 83 or 84, before this song. One of the best concerts ever. I was a kid, and I didn't know most of her songs then, but she was so good.

My mom was a big Mel Gibson/Mad Max fan (this was before we knew his deal), but when Thunderdome came out w/ Tina as Auntie Entity, she über-plotzed. LOVED her in that film (and generally.
Related, she also became a big Grace Jones fan after seeing her kicking the shit out of people in Conan the Destroyer.

If there's a recording of Robert Clary (Corporal LeBeau from Hogan's Heroes) singing "Frère Jacques," I'd like to hear that.

One of the local indie cinemas up here does an annual program of vintage movie trailers. One year they accidentally played this one twice, which finally gave me an opportunity to say "Can't we just get BEYOND Thunderdome?!"

Ha! So, in London, there's a cabaret artist called Tina T'urner Tea Lady, who basically is a tea lady who believes herself to have been Tina Turner. I interviewed her here thewidowstanton.com... Yes, self-promotion; I apologise. She's utterly wonderful. Anyway, she has a tea-promoting song that rails against a chain of UK coffee shops that's called We Don't Need A Café Nero!

My problem with terms like "chick lit" is that it's dismissive in the extreme. It's meant to be an indicator that something is not worth serious attention. And it (intentionally) puts women's artistic achievements into a ghetto where only women are expected to read or discuss these works. It's a not very subtle form of exclusion and is also meant to ridicule.
