So a “Party Store” is like a corner grocery but with weird zoning specific restrictions on what can be sold yet they can sell fireworks and booze?
Avatar Tue. 7/4/17 12:27am mark1981:

I've never been to a party store that sold fireworks but I would never rule it out!

FWIW, there is a “crazy” corner discount store on Newark Avenue and Barrow Street right near the Grove Street PATH station that might qualify for the “Party Store” moniker if they sold cigarettes and beer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 7/4/17 12:59am Ken From Hyde Park:

Aha...Mayuko's guess that your name is Mark Vee was correct and not Mark Five.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/4/17 1:01am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- & Janis.
...Anybody doesn't know already:
Hendrix had to go to London to become famous - so Monterey Pop - the 1st widely-promoted Rock Festival June 1967 - was his band the Experience's U.S. debut. Neither Jimi nor Townshend of TheWh♂ wanted to follow the other's act - so there was a coin flip & Jimi lost - so he said he would pull out all the stops - & he set fire to his guitar & smashed it on his closer there. John Phillips (who organized the festival) said Hendrix went from rumor to legend in the U.S. in that one set of music.
Avatar Tue. 7/4/17 1:03am mark1981:

ha! yes, Mark Veeee c'est moi
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/4/17 1:04am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...So it was national exposure for the acts. For Otis, it meant crossing over from the Soul audience to everyone else. But then his plane crashed very shortly after.
  Tue. 7/4/17 1:06am Carmichael:

Heya Mark, first time listener, also never called. Great song choices.
Avatar Tue. 7/4/17 1:06am mark1981:

that's a great scoop on the coin flipping, Revolution Rabbit! And yeah, this is so key for bringing Otis Redding to the rock n' rollers...and this is such an amazing performance it. (I used to live in Madison, WI, where his plane went down...ugh)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/4/17 1:09am JakeGould:

So Jimi was a bad sport. Oh well. :/
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/4/17 1:10am JakeGould:

@mark1981: Hey! I lived in Madison, WI from 1995 to 2000 as well. The plane crash came up regularly. Lived on South Hancock and West Main for reference. So hey!

this song makes me want to dance.
Avatar Tue. 7/4/17 1:17am mark1981:

@devlawn: It's a faboo dancing song! Take it away. Show us yr moves!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/4/17 1:17am JakeGould:

@mark1981: Oh, what another world that place must have been during the 2010s. But Badger Liquor and the Willy Street Co-op is still there. Mifflin Street Co-op is sadly gone I believe?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/4/17 1:17am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Aw - it was a very important gig for everyone - but Jimi was effectively 'debuting' in his own country. Those two were often billed together - Jimi was on Track Records - TheWh♂'s management's label - so it was a little close for comfort is all...Ironically,TheWh♂ helped develop Marshall amps - the 1st 6' 100Watt amplifiers - but couldn't bring them on their U.S. tour then yet - so they had smaller Vox amps. Jimi had his Marshalls which helped him upstage them...the poor GratefulDead had to go on inbetween the two ('We always blow the big ones!')...
  Tue. 7/4/17 1:18am Carmichael:

The live Rock N Roll Animal version is probably the greatest live album ever, to my ears.
Avatar Tue. 7/4/17 1:22am mark1981:

More concert movies, y'all! Who's seen Wattstax?! One of my FAVORITES! (and sadly members of the Barkays died in the same flight as Otis, but let's not think on that. Just check out these guys outfits when you can!!)

They didn't know what to do with a powerful woman who didn't fit their precious little mold. And they still don't.

@Revolution: that's such a great part!! You see her mouth go "wow" I think? AMAZING
Avatar Tue. 7/4/17 1:38am mark1981:

@fleep: high-five. Indeed!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/4/17 1:40am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

See how Janis is left out of the pantheon of Jimi, Morrison &tc. She didn't write songs - but she should be just as iconic. Her influence on even male RawkSingers - Plant, Tyler - is never broached...
Avatar Tue. 7/4/17 1:42am mark1981:

@Revolution: there's a beautiful, smart biography of her by a music scholar, Alice Echols. Broke my heart and felt so much affinity w/ her after that! Heard her music in a whole new way.
Avatar Tue. 7/4/17 1:47am Veronica (OG):

Hi all! Thanks for a great show Mark V. That Janis: Little Girl Blue doc was pretty great. What a tragic life she had, but damn what great music she made. One of my favorite concert films of the 1960s/70s is the Maysles brothers Gimme Shelter.
Avatar Tue. 7/4/17 1:51am Veronica (OG):

Monterey Pop was definitely a groundbreaking concert and film.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/4/17 1:57am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Grew up back when the three TV stations you'd get would show the films they owned basically once a year - so when something like 'Monterey Pop' came on it was a real buzz, & really informed me.
Avatar Tue. 7/4/17 1:59am mark1981:

@Veronica: Yr welcome! It's been such a pleasure. I haven't seen Little Girl Blue. I'll have to check it out...thx for the recommendation.
Avatar Tue. 7/4/17 2:00am mark1981:

@Revolution: I was a teaching assistant for a class on Black Music and American Cultural History in grad school and there was a lecture that focused on Monterey for some of the reasons you've been talking about. That's where I first learned about it.
Avatar Tue. 7/4/17 2:02am Veronica (OG):

Sounds like a great class! TV is how I first saw Monterey Pop too.
Avatar Tue. 7/4/17 2:02am mark1981:

Great to have you listening @Revolution!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/4/17 2:02am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Glad to hear the doc is good. Cheers.
Avatar Tue. 7/4/17 2:04am mark1981:

@Veronica: yes! It was the best teaching experience I ever had. ... TV! Sounds almost, like, ancient now? I learned so much about music from TV, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/4/17 2:04am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Lester Bangs has an essay about playing Otis for Punks & such...& getting really racist reactions...I'm afraid I've been in an audience of the film & really surprised how little enthusiasm there was for him...
Avatar Tue. 7/4/17 2:08am Veronica (OG):

Yeah, music was still very segregated but there was crossover. Even TV music shows like Soul Train that catered to a black audience attracted a lot of non-black teens in its viewing audience.
Avatar Tue. 7/4/17 2:10am mark1981:

@Revolution: I'd love to read that essay. I might have to play another Otis Redding track just to show whoever those lousy listeners were in the theater w/ you! @Veronica: Word!

@RevRabbit: There is a lot of racism in the realm of “Real Rock and Roll” fans and artists still to this day.
