Bill Ward has a bunch of his vintage drum gear for sale up at Reverb - he's got a set of 5 or 6 ancient Zildjians that he used on the first 3 Sabbath albums - $ 30K! Gotta love Bill!
Avatar Thu. 6/29/17 12:53pm Diane Kamikaze:

Yes I saw that VP! Hey all! So Martin Popoff is coming on the air with me at 1pm! Right now we are hearing his first Peer Pressure set, not sure how long he can stay on the line. We will be primarily talking about "WHO INVENTED HEAVY METAL" and "CAUGHT IN A MOSH -THE GOLDEN AGE OF THRASH" and I'll definitely get him talking about the Voivod book as well! Any questions, please post!!
  Thu. 6/29/17 1:07pm Johny:

Blue cheer invented heavy metal!
  Thu. 6/29/17 1:10pm miles:

I have often wondered if Lost Girl by the Troggs isn't the first heavy song. Also there's a song by the yardbirds that Ozzy basically stole his sound from. 1965!
  Thu. 6/29/17 1:11pm miles:

('66?)
  Thu. 6/29/17 1:12pm Tom Sawyer:

Black Sabbath invented Heavy Metal
Avatar    Thu. 6/29/17 1:15pm Chris from DC:

Looking forward to the thrash discussion. Favorite non "big 4" band?
  Thu. 6/29/17 1:16pm Tom Sawyer:

Regarding the Voivod book -When writing the text, did you have the specific art you are talking about in front of you guys?
  Thu. 6/29/17 1:21pm miles:

Has the proto metal template question been addressed ? I'd like to hear his thoughts on this Kinks Troggs Yardbirds dynamic
Avatar    Thu. 6/29/17 1:22pm V Priceless:

Interesting coincidence that both the first Sabbath album & fellow Birmingham band The Move's 'Shazam' were both released in Feb. '70...heavy rock has some deep roots in Birmingham, UK, no doubt....
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 6/29/17 1:26pm Ken From Hyde Park:

How amazing is it that the unfortunate accident that took Tony Iommi's fingertips led to the way he changed his guitar and all that that followed. Also amazing that Ozzie is still with us after all he's been through.
Avatar    Thu. 6/29/17 1:27pm V Priceless:

hey that BOC 'Mirrors' album artwork by the very cool Loren Salazar (that's not a photo)!

Wouldn't it be ironic if Martin is related to Peter Popoff
  Thu. 6/29/17 1:33pm Tom Sawyer:

any plans for a German Thrash book? How about a DEATH book.
  Thu. 6/29/17 1:33pm Miles:

Ever Since The World Began by the Yardbirds is the song that sounds almost exactly like Ozzy. It mentions Satan & then degrades into some kind of skiffle goofiness . Please please ask him about this song
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/29/17 1:33pm Cecile:

I missed some great stuff.

IMO, Heavy Metal started with Link Wray.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/29/17 1:34pm Cecile:

Martin Popoff, I am such a huge fan of yours.
Are you still a big fan of those first Saints albums? You are one of the few metal critics that gets their genius.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/29/17 1:36pm Cecile:

Also, which Big 4 metal band do you currently want to hit on the head with a cinder block?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 6/29/17 1:38pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Question: Who invented the phrase "in my pants"? Well, not a serious question.
Avatar    Thu. 6/29/17 1:38pm PKNY:

Since I only live a few miles away from Union Catholic: where did Martin get the flyer on the cover of his "Let Doom Loose" Sabbath book? I find it so crazy that Sabbath played a Catholic HS gym in 1971.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/29/17 1:40pm Cecile:

Martin's metal record guides for the 70s, 80s and 90s and overall are great. I highly recommend them.

With your expansive taste in music, is there a genre or particular band that you would abso-effin-lutely never listen to, or write about no matter what they paid you?
  Thu. 6/29/17 2:17pm Dean:

I remember hearing Kill 'Em All for the first time. It was on a very fine stereo system in a high-end audio equipment dealer's listening room. Probably late '83, early '84.

I got a feeling that most of those '70s and '80s double-live records saw overdubbing.
