Whoo! Bryan Ferry is gonna play in my town in August.
Avatar Tue. 2/28/17 11:58am Tony Coulter:

Hey, Cecile! Lucky you!
Avatar Tue. 2/28/17 12:01pm Cecile:

I'm pretty excited. I hope I can get tickets. Waiting on a couple of friends to decide. I have a presale code burning a hole in my pocket.
Avatar Tue. 2/28/17 12:01pm listener james from westwood:

Good Tuesday, Tony and all! Cecile, sending luck on the ticket count!

Hola, Carmichael!
Avatar Tue. 2/28/17 12:08pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

NICE. th'Plague have a new one out as of about ten minutes ago, as my cuneiform moles inform me...
Avatar Tue. 2/28/17 12:10pm Tony Coulter:

Heard that was coming! Will have to scoop it up....
Avatar Tue. 2/28/17 12:11pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

HEH! Cecile 11:51 -- couple of years ago, Ferry had a couple of dates here in DC at a venue that was practically across the alley from our apartment, yet the timing didn't work...
Avatar Tue. 2/28/17 12:12pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

...rather glad we moved outta there. The subs from the venue rattling bedroom windows every night CAN get a little tedious...
Avatar Tue. 2/28/17 12:16pm Tony Coulter:

There's certainly no denying that Thinking Plague listened to their fair share of Henry Cow and Art Bears records.
Avatar Tue. 2/28/17 12:19pm Tony Coulter:

... which is more than A-OK with me....
Avatar Tue. 2/28/17 12:21pm Tony Coulter:

They forgot to add the hiss on the cassette. The fi is pretty good, no?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 2/28/17 12:22pm doctorjazz:

Thinking Plague, huh? Not in the least familiar, but sounding great.
Avatar Tue. 2/28/17 12:24pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, doctorjazz!

Thinking Plague are indeed great -- and still going strong, as Rev. Turnip said.
Avatar Tue. 2/28/17 12:26pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

The new one is "hoping against hope" -- for the curious, www.cuneiformrecords.com...
Avatar Tue. 2/28/17 12:28pm Tony Coulter:

Forgot to mention: everyone on this tape is/was from Denver, CO.
Avatar Tue. 2/28/17 12:29pm Tony Coulter:

And Bob Drake is on most of the tracks.
Avatar Tue. 2/28/17 12:31pm Tony Coulter:

He's a bassist, drummer and everything-else-er.
Avatar Tue. 2/28/17 12:32pm Tony Coulter:

And the vocalist here is Susanne Lewis.
Avatar Tue. 2/28/17 12:33pm Tony Coulter:

AND .. Corpses As Bedmates later changed their name to Hail.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 2/28/17 12:38pm doctorjazz:

Or maybe Dean is right! (Heya, Dean!)
  Tue. 2/28/17 12:47pm Dean:

All I know is their trucks roll around town proudly displaying the golden BFD.
Avatar Tue. 2/28/17 12:58pm Tony Coulter:

Ron Miles again on trumpet -- on this Legacy of Sorrow track, I mean.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 2/28/17 1:04pm annie:

holy moly!!! what fun!!
Avatar Tue. 2/28/17 1:05pm Tony Coulter:

The legacy of sorrow is ... fun!
Avatar Tue. 2/28/17 1:07pm Guido from Cologne:

Hello Tony!
Avatar Tue. 2/28/17 1:08pm Tony Coulter:

This Cage of Reason track was from a tape that was forthcoming at the time of this sampler -- don't think it ever came out, though....
Avatar Tue. 2/28/17 1:08pm Tony Coulter:

Hiya, Guido!
Avatar Tue. 2/28/17 1:08pm Guido from Cologne:

Cage of Reason is another Deja-Vu ... no idea in which relation I had or heard this track back then.
Avatar Tue. 2/28/17 1:12pm Tony Coulter:

Here's some real deva vu for you: we just heard this track 30 minutes ago, on the sampler.
  Tue. 2/28/17 1:14pm Dean:

Speaking of forthcoming releases, I finally received Keith Berry's "Elixir" yesterday. It had been delayed for about a year while Matthew of invisible birds moved from Portland to NYC. It is well worth the wait, a beautiful record: http://invisiblebirds.org/catalogue/ib010.html

@ Guido: Aha!! So the whole thing did come out after all. Thanks, Guido!!
Avatar Tue. 2/28/17 1:25pm Tony Coulter:

Here are the full credits for this B.F.D. tape:
Bass, Synthesizer, Engineer – Bob Drake
Drums, Voice, Performer [Machines] – Mark Fuller
Synthesizer, Guitar, Voice – Patrick Bower
Avatar Tue. 2/28/17 1:34pm Tony Coulter:

By the by, Michael Gersten out here in Portland hepped me to this Trivison/Slabe tape recently. He'll be opening a new record store in North Portland in a month, called Speck's Record & Tapes.
  Tue. 2/28/17 1:35pm Dean:

Have you already reported on the illustration on which the tapes are sitting? A record cover? Something else?
Avatar Tue. 2/28/17 1:37pm Tony Coulter:

@ Dean: Yes, it is a record cover. Didn't ask for guesses since it's only part of the cover -- but guess away if you wish!!
  Tue. 2/28/17 1:37pm Dean:

On Sunday I dropped my family off at a kid's birthday party, then continued down the freeway to an outpost of Rasputin Records I'd never visited. Found the first Environments LP in excellent condition for $1 and a Guru Guru bootleg for $3! (Also a Barbra Streisand LP, Stoney End, for fifty cents, among others.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 2/28/17 1:38pm Uncle Michael:

I've been enjoying the show, Tony.
Avatar Tue. 2/28/17 1:39pm Tony Coulter:

Heya, Uncle Mikey! Glad you're here!
Avatar Tue. 2/28/17 1:42pm Tony Coulter:

Want to guess the identity of the record jacket beneath today's cassettes, anyone? If not, I will reveal the answer shortly.
  Tue. 2/28/17 1:45pm Dean:

It reminds me of a band whose name I forget, might have had "International" in it, I think, a Gang of Four soundalike...bah.
Avatar Tue. 2/28/17 1:46pm Tony Coulter:

@ Dean: I'm still looking for that bootleg recording of Barbra Streisand and Guru Guru jamming together.
Avatar Tue. 2/28/17 1:46pm Cecile:

I dunno, a Pere Ubu album?
  Tue. 2/28/17 1:46pm Dean:

Je M'appele Mani
Avatar Tue. 2/28/17 1:49pm Tony Coulter:

Dean has guessed correctly! It is that band whose name he forgets. Actually, it's a Billy Syndrome record called "Vicious Burger": www.discogs.com...
Avatar Tue. 2/28/17 1:50pm Tony Coulter:

... which I've barely listened to, to be honest (got it not too long ago).
  Tue. 2/28/17 1:51pm Dean:

Can't forget what I never remembered in the first place.

Would love to jog my memory, though, of that post-Gang of Four band... Something something International ... or ... International something something...
Avatar Tue. 2/28/17 1:54pm Tony Coulter:

Someone & the Somebodies?
Avatar Tue. 2/28/17 1:55pm Tony Coulter:

who are a (fine) band, for realz: www.discogs.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 2/28/17 2:04pm Carmichael:

This sounds very Canterbury-ish.
Avatar Tue. 2/28/17 2:05pm Tony Coulter:

Didn't occur to me -- but I see what you mean!!
  Tue. 2/28/17 2:09pm epizootics:

Hello, Tony. Shame I missed a good chunk of the, and I must admit I tried to record the show in advance while I was away at school. The pop-up player must've corrupted or something because it was only taking sputters of musicality.

I think I read about this tape while collecting C.L.E.M. list I did recently. Good stuff.
Avatar Tue. 2/28/17 2:10pm Tony Coulter:

Hey there, epizootics!!
Avatar Tue. 2/28/17 2:12pm Tony Coulter:

That C.L.E.M. list of yours is great! Have already forwarded it to a friend. Here it is for everyone else: rateyourmusic.com...
  Tue. 2/28/17 2:19pm epizootics:

I've begun to OCR the other scanned copy I could find, filling in some missing artists/labels, shame that's all I could find as of now. I think Mystery Hearsay was going to do a whole project with it but I haven't seen anything come to fruition.
Avatar Tue. 2/28/17 2:21pm Tony Coulter:

I've got a paper copy of the April '86 edition. In fact, it's on a shelf right behind me.
  Tue. 2/28/17 2:22pm epizootics:

And (sorry if I'm spamming a bit) I still haven't found a lead on that Profit Motive tape. May have to come on down to Polish Hill and give the rec. store a visit. Or maybe knock on Manny Theiner's door.
Avatar Tue. 2/28/17 2:25pm Tony Coulter:

Yeah, would love the hear the whole thing! Would definitely be at home on this show. Here is side A, in case anyone is curious what we're talking about: www.youtube.com...
Avatar Tue. 2/28/17 2:28pm Tony Coulter:

As I just said, Moms Who Chop is Pat Maherr: www.discogs.com...

This tape might be from '95, as that date is mentioned in the "lyrics."
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 2/28/17 2:29pm doctorjazz:

moms Who Chop! Cool!
  Tue. 2/28/17 2:31pm Dean:

(International) Noise Conspiracy could be the band, although they started well after GoF had made their mark. I was thinking of a band that sorta rode GoF's coattails. Can't find a cover of theirs that reminds me all that much of Billy Syndrome's, so now I'm thinking I'm conflating (I)NC with some earlier band.
Avatar Tue. 2/28/17 2:42pm listener james from westwood:

This show has been a blast but to have "Magic Fly" too? ::makes chef kissing gesture:: Mwah!
Avatar Tue. 2/28/17 2:43pm Tony Coulter:

Oh, I should have mentioned that this tape also came out on LP. Here is the Saudi Arabian release of it we're hearing: www.discogs.com...
Avatar Tue. 2/28/17 2:43pm Tony Coulter:

@ Listener James: Ha! Glad you approve!
Avatar Tue. 2/28/17 2:46pm Tony Coulter:

By the way, don't forget everyone: next week is ... the marathon! (Yay! Yikes!) The great Charlie will be my virtual cohost.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 2/28/17 2:47pm JtotheK:

discogs credit shows space music 'mixed by' credit for Tom Moulton. i like it!
Avatar Tue. 2/28/17 2:50pm Tony Coulter:

Tom Moulton, the disco mixmaster supreme-o!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 2/28/17 2:56pm JtotheK:

enjoyed the tunes (though I missed out on some of the 'Better Music Through Electronics - augh!), thanks Tony!
Avatar Tue. 2/28/17 2:56pm Rich in Washington:

this sounds weirdly like the outro music to Repo Man, melody-wise.
Avatar Tue. 2/28/17 2:57pm listener james from westwood:

Ta ta, Tony and all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 2/28/17 2:57pm Stanley:
