Quick hello, got to turn over the chicken run on this unseasonally warm and dry day. Lots of wriggly worms to be caught and eaten.
Some unseasonably? digging music needed.
Avatar Sun. 2/19/17 8:38am Jeff Golick:

Ain't nobody here but us chickens, so much obliged, @Brian in UK! I'll check in with the Diggers....
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 2/19/17 8:49am Brian in UK:

Jeff. S'funny you should mention the Diggers. I was only thinking of them the other day, something triggered my thoughts on when they held the Death of the Hippy March in SF some time around Aug/Sept '67. I think it was the thought that so many things happen on the street, like hippies and punk then eventually get to the mainstream
Avatar Sun. 2/19/17 8:54am Jeff Golick:

It's what capitalism does best!

Morning Jeff, and all Outbound.

Unseasonably warm and sunny in West Toronto this morning.

Snow departed and we are left to make our reacquaintance with

green things.

Hey-o, @Scraps deSelby! And is that @Andy? above.
Safe travels, @listener james; glad to be aboard. Grab me a cruller?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/19/17 9:06am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Plenty of damned snow left here. So glad it's D.O. time. RIP Funky Drummer. Think of the impact he's had helping JamesBrown invent that.
Avatar Sun. 2/19/17 9:07am Jeff Golick:

Yeah, that's some depletion of the world's funk levels, @Scraps. They were already pretty low.

I wore out my 'VillageGreen' CD. How do you wear out a CD??
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 2/19/17 10:23am Uncle Michael:

I've worn out a few using them for coasters.
Avatar Sun. 2/19/17 10:24am Jeff Golick:

Lasers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/19/17 10:24am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...of them all, still the Great 60s Album waiting to be discovered & played out by the yuppie masses...

Perfect absorption forever

I'm having my first cup of coffee, so i'm not entirely sure!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/19/17 10:27am Scraps:

Village Green or Arthur? Arthur or Village Green? Eventually I will wear them out trying to get an answer
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/19/17 10:28am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

btw: 'VillageGreen' released same day as the White Album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 2/19/17 10:29am Uncle Michael:

No one can ever "play out" an album for me. If I tire of something, it's my responsibility. I think you're talking about the masses stripping my precious totem of its cool veneer of obscurity...and that's *my* problem.
Avatar Sun. 2/19/17 10:31am Jeff Golick:

I experienced that problem when I heard The Sonics under a Range Rover tv ad.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 2/19/17 10:31am Uncle Michael:

Man, if I had *anything* to do with inspiring this set, I'm a freaking radio god.
Avatar Sun. 2/19/17 10:31am Jeff Golick:

Or maybe that's a similar, but adjacent problem.
Avatar Sun. 2/19/17 10:32am Jeff Golick:

Almost goes without saying, @UM.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/19/17 10:33am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Well - I frankly didn't discover 'PetSounds' or 'ForeverChanges' until the 90s. The awe of that - & realizing Pet was right there behind Pepper all along...& then everybody's on it. But you're right - they don't get old for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 2/19/17 10:33am Uncle Michael:

I'd say 'adjacent'. Corporations trying to use your cultural associations as levers. This presumes there are more than a few people for whom the Sonics are a cultural association. Otherwise, something else is going on.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 2/19/17 10:34am Uncle Michael:

See Rev, you're part of the problem...you yuppie.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/19/17 10:34am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

The Sonics sang about cars...If there's one thing I am not, it's a yuppie.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 2/19/17 10:35am Uncle Michael:

Way, way more people have heard Iggy on television commercials than through any other medium.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/19/17 10:35am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- or Nick Drake.
Avatar Sun. 2/19/17 10:36am Jeff Golick:

That VW/Nick Drake ad is exhibit A.
  Sun. 2/19/17 10:36am Dean:

I dunno. I think it's kinda cool that Miller Lite used "Too Drunk to Fuck" for a commercial.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 2/19/17 10:36am Uncle Michael:

Volkswagen drove many people to buy Nick Drake albums. Hardly a bad thing.
Avatar Sun. 2/19/17 10:37am Jeff Golick:

I wanna live in your universe, @Dean.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/19/17 10:37am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

The DKs worst song. They can have it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 2/19/17 10:38am Uncle Michael:

I can remember being bent about Nike/Revolution. Now I think that's quaint. Maintaining my associations is my own responsibility.
Avatar Sun. 2/19/17 10:38am Jeff Golick:

@UM: true that, re VW. It was a genius ad.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 2/19/17 10:39am Uncle Michael:

I'm packing for L.A. This is made weird by the forecast high for my entire trip being 64 degrees. It was 77 here in Topeka the other day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/19/17 10:40am Andrew Waterloo:

I was reading this article, about how music is purely marketed to adults. www.salon.com...
  Sun. 2/19/17 10:40am Dean:

...says the DJ whose show opens with a supermarket jingle and Jimmy Durante.

LA? I'm heading there tomorrow with 10YO (soon to be 11YO).
Avatar Sun. 2/19/17 10:40am Jeff Golick:

...and L.A. is under water now. What goes on in L.A., @UM?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/19/17 10:41am Andrew Waterloo:

It makes a lot of sense that people would be discovering new music from alternate sources.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 2/19/17 10:42am Uncle Michael:

Family rendezvous. I'm going to try and breakaway for a trip to Amoeba.

How long will you be in town, Dean? We'll be based in Santa Monica.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 2/19/17 10:42am Uncle Michael:

Dean, you forgot the Hire's Root Beer ad.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/19/17 10:43am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

A dead Artist can't consent. Jim Morrison didn't consent. TheBeatles struggle for their Publishing Rights. A few seconds of a tune isn't that big a deal. Every commercial is B.S. & we all know it instinctively anyhow (if they think I'm buying a car the joke's on them). When it goes counter what they tune's about - it's just a dumb style choice...Commercials *are* a dumb style choice...
77 in February ??
  Sun. 2/19/17 10:44am Dean:

Just through Wednesday afternoon, mostly east side of the County. A trip to Amoeba for me would constitute child abandonment and elder abuse at once, I'm afraid.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 2/19/17 10:45am Uncle Michael:

We don't actually get to CA till Tuesday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/19/17 10:45am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Oh - I think of Amoeba as an S.F. thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 2/19/17 10:45am Uncle Michael:

The really big store is in Hollywood, no?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/19/17 10:46am Scraps:

Blogs are dead too. Thanks to Facebook.
  Sun. 2/19/17 10:46am Dean:

Amoeba was originally a Berkeley thing. I work about six blocks from it. A year after we left LA, Amoeba opened its h-u-g-e Hollywood store, go figure.

  Sun. 2/19/17 10:49am Dean:

A few years ago I took my nephew to the SF store. Paid for what he wanted and then, just to show off and model irresponsible behavior, I blew about $300 on product.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/19/17 10:51am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Our version of LasVegas I suppose. Set a ceiling.
Avatar Sun. 2/19/17 10:51am Jeff Golick:

AB, yes. Brax Trax. Keep 'em coming....
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 2/19/17 10:52am Uncle Michael:

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 2/19/17 10:53am Uncle Michael:

They should comp high rollers.

Just as Braxton intended, @UM

Berkeley store once gave me a t-shirt for conspicuously consuming.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/19/17 10:54am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

From what I've read (?) about Anth.Braxton - I'd be scared to talk to him - a super theoretical intellectual...
Avatar Sun. 2/19/17 10:55am Jeff Golick:

When you say "you could photoshop," @Gary, who is the "you?"
Avatar Sun. 2/19/17 10:55am Jeff Golick:

@Dean: that is a bad/great sign.
  Sun. 2/19/17 10:56am Dean:

There's a nice interview with Mary Halvorson on YT describing Braxton in the classroom.
Avatar Sun. 2/19/17 10:56am Jeff Golick:

@RRN63: have you read the Graham Lock book? He comes across as very lively and not at all the stuffy intellectual one might think (given the glasses, pipe, and graphic song titles).
Avatar Sun. 2/19/17 10:57am Jeff Golick:

If this Braxton thing rolls on for a while, I could play excerpts of the Lock/Braxton interview that came with one of the CDs from AB's 1985 tour of England.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/19/17 10:57am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Well - that was a fun track. It's good to be in over yer head anyhow...
  Sun. 2/19/17 10:57am Dean:

Two Graham Lock books, if you count Bluetopia.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/19/17 10:58am Stanley:

In our house, there's nothing like a a bit of contrabass saxophone action
Avatar Sun. 2/19/17 10:58am Jeff Golick:

Ah yes, @Dean. I've not picked up BLUETOPIA. I'm guessing it is similarly great?
Avatar Sun. 2/19/17 10:59am Jeff Golick:

Hey, @Stanley, you low-end lover, you.
  Sun. 2/19/17 10:59am Dean:

Includes Ellington and Sun Ra. It's more "academic"-ish.
Avatar Sun. 2/19/17 10:59am Jeff Golick:

(If that's not too personal a thing to say.)
Avatar Sun. 2/19/17 11:00am Jeff Golick:

Ah, yes. Well, I find Lock to be a wonderfully clear explicator of Braxton, so I should give it a shot. I was afraid of FORCES IN MOTION for years before taking it on and loving it so much.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/19/17 11:01am Stanley:

Jeff, that's the best thing someone's called me for a while
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 2/19/17 11:03am Brian in UK:

Just back from a dog walk. Seeing you mentioned Escher, bought a print yesterday of the two hands writing. Reminded me of this 'joke'.
Why did the chicken cross the mobius strip?
To get to the same side.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 2/19/17 11:05am Brian in UK:

Hey Stanley. did you enjoy your pint in the Fool & Bladder on Friday?
  Sun. 2/19/17 11:10am Dean:

The building in which I work features a central staircase enclosed in a boxy glass atrium. From one view the stairway proceeding to the floor below appears in front of you through the glass, which prevents your getting to it directly, even though it's *right there*. You have to spiral around the atrium. I call it the Escher stairway.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/19/17 11:12am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...Zappa: ...'& what - you may ask - is a trend-mon-gerrer ??'...
Avatar Sun. 2/19/17 11:12am Jeff Golick:

That's a good one, @Brian. I chuckled.
Avatar Sun. 2/19/17 11:16am Jeff Golick:

This "track 3" is from the series of "Braxton Bootlegs" (or as I call them, BBLs) that AB's foundation has put out over the past several years. Forty-one so far: tricentricfoundation.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/19/17 11:17am Stanley:

Sure did, Brian - there I was in the ol' Fool minding my own business when I get a call for an impromptu invite to a neighbours which turned into a bit of a session. Much to my great joy, I woke the next morning bright as a button. I fancy it's them chemical free artisianl small batch bearded beers I drink nowadays.
  Sun. 2/19/17 11:19am Dean:

Wow, it's been several minutes since Braxton issued a new release.
Avatar Sun. 2/19/17 11:21am Jeff Golick:

Just wait a sec, @Dean.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 2/19/17 11:25am doctorjazz:

Have a good number of records by Braxton, probably not more than a few percent of his output.
  Sun. 2/19/17 11:27am Dean:

Uncle Michael routinely falls for my "I've been to every Grateful Dead concert" schtick, but nobody would believe somebody who claims to have every Braxton release.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 2/19/17 11:29am Brian in UK:

Not even the Grateful Dead have been to all their concerts.

I loves Tony, Toni, Tone.

Would love to hear Braxton solo at FIMAV. Before moving to Bay Area I visited to hear three of the five nights of Ghost Trance Music at Yoshi's, both shows each night. Visited the old downtown Berkeley Public Library during the visit. The music room was playing a record: Braxton.
Avatar Sun. 2/19/17 11:40am Jeff Golick:

Funny I was listening to Clem Burke's drumming recently. I know different style, but what a crisp drummer, no finer for a pop tune. Drives the thing along.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 2/19/17 11:54am Uncle Michael:

Demis' solo work and his stuff with Aphrodite's Children couldn't be more different.
