Avatar Sun. 2/12/17 8:44am Andy in Etobicoke:

Good morning Jeff and fellow Outliers.

It is snowing quite heavily in Western Toronto and I am not quite sure what my first move should be.

Any advice to that end would be appreciated.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/12/17 8:48am annie:

coffee, hot shower, clean jammies, warm bathrobe, and a project to listen to the radio by.
Avatar Sun. 2/12/17 8:50am Jeff Golick:

Hello, @Andy and @annie. Welcome, welcome.

@Andy: how're you set for food/provisions?

@annie: sounds like you have it all under control. (What's that like?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/12/17 8:55am annie:

it's rare, jeff.. rare
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/12/17 8:59am Stanley:

(coming over from the other side) Hi Jeff, Destined Ones.
Avatar Sun. 2/12/17 9:01am Jeff Golick:

@Stanley! How is it over there?
Avatar Sun. 2/12/17 9:03am duke:

Good snowy morning everyone
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/12/17 9:05am Stanley:

@Jeff - I'm half way through my lazy Sunday: breakfast, coffee, personal emails and WFMU, then made bread. Put into rise, then thought to get dressed. Got serious for a short while and cleaned out the fridge. If I was lucky, I'd watch a movie in bed on a Sunday afternoon but since this show is on, it's more music, more coffee etc etc. It's cold outside, anyway.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/12/17 9:05am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

HolySmokes JeffG! Blessing to Thee.
Avatar Sun. 2/12/17 9:08am Jeff Golick:

Hellos, @duke!

@Stanley: sounds like thinks are in (lovely) order!

Hi, @RRN63. Thank ye.
  Sun. 2/12/17 9:11am ?:

Jeff,

I am set, thank you for asking, but I am a might concerned for my flock of ducks.

Sometimes nature needs a nudge.

I should be shovelling the creek on and off until this abates.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/12/17 9:27am Stanley:

A big nod of approval for this Agitation Free track. Malesh means 'never mind', if I remember correctly)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/12/17 9:29am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

'Arabic' Floyd? Way kewl...well, they called Rick Wright's stock keyboard riff his 'Turkish delight'...
  Sun. 2/12/17 9:29am Doug Schulkind:

And how are all you OUTlandishly handsome today?!
Avatar Sun. 2/12/17 9:30am Jeff Golick:

Ah, thanks for that, @Stanley. There was something good in the water in early 1970s Germany, that's for sure.
  Sun. 2/12/17 9:31am Doug Schulkind:

People, handsome people!
Avatar Sun. 2/12/17 9:32am Jeff Golick:

It's all one big handsome family!

Hiya, @Doug!
Avatar Sun. 2/12/17 9:35am Jeff Golick:

This Wayne Shorter recorded was recorded in 1970. And released in 1974.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/12/17 9:37am doctorjazz:

Hey all, hiding under the covers, don't want to set what it's like outside.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/12/17 9:37am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

In a world where everything seems less certain & more like Alice in Wonderland all the time - nice to know I can instantly clicky☆ WayneShorter in 1970 & have no regrets...
Avatar Sun. 2/12/17 9:38am Jeff Golick:

You can hide out here all morning, @doctorjazz. (I am.)
Avatar Sun. 2/12/17 9:39am Jeff Golick:

@RRN63: reassuring, too, that Wayne is still with us and still killing it.
  Sun. 2/12/17 9:39am Doug Schulkind:

It is an absurd 50*F and foggy here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/12/17 9:40am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Actually McLaughlin on 12String being noisey says wigkey.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/12/17 9:43am Uncle Michael:

I may have missed Agitation Free but I worked out to Wayne. Don't try this at home...or do.
Avatar Sun. 2/12/17 9:46am Jeff Golick:

Hey, @UM. You were rockin' in rhythm?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/12/17 9:48am Uncle Michael:

No, in spite of rhythm.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/12/17 9:48am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Billy Strayhorn is from Pittsburgh. Not born here, but from here from childhood. I am at this moment about three blocks from the Kelly-Strayhorn Theater, named for Billy and Gene Kelly.
Avatar Sun. 2/12/17 9:55am Jeff Golick:

Is Kelly also a son of the 'burgh?
  Sun. 2/12/17 9:56am Doug Schulkind:

Apparently.

I'm sensing that you're feeling under the weather, Jeff...
Avatar Sun. 2/12/17 10:07am Jeff Golick:

Avatar Sun. 2/12/17 10:08am Jeff Golick:

@Andy: Are giraffes hard to keep in line, then?
Avatar Sun. 2/12/17 10:09am Jeff Golick:

Hi and good morning, @melinda!
  Sun. 2/12/17 10:09am Mark R:

Sometimes you can find those missing tracks like "T.B. Sheets" online, if you have the time to get past the ads and cue it up and all that in the 2 seconds you have between songs and responding to trolls on the comments board. And yes, I concur about this Elizabeth Mitchell track--it's lovely.
Avatar Sun. 2/12/17 10:10am Andy in Etobicoke:

I find it`s all in their lineage, but that might just be me.

Thank s for asking, though.

Others shy away.
Avatar Sun. 2/12/17 10:11am Andy in Etobicoke:

Melodic yet shreiky is mighty hard to pull off, but Bravo! Dagmar and Co
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/12/17 10:12am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I would imagine the hard part is 1st getting gyraffe eye contact...
Avatar Sun. 2/12/17 10:15am Andy in Etobicoke:

Rev: Eye contact is the last thing I introduce, but once you have made that connection, they are putty in your hands.

I appreciate your interest.
Avatar Sun. 2/12/17 10:16am Jeff Golick:

Mark: as someone who typically plays 10+ minute songs, the steps it would take to quickly find a song online and queue it up are more than I'm capable of. I get the cold sweats playing two-minute songs back to back.
Avatar Sun. 2/12/17 10:17am Jeff Golick:

"Melodic yet shrieky" is a lovely phrase.
  Sun. 2/12/17 10:21am Mark R:

Right, I figured...please don't put any added stress on your spleen. I can't have that on my conscience.
Avatar Sun. 2/12/17 10:22am Jeff Golick:

Thanks. In fact, to recover from this set, I'm playing a 25-minute song after the break.
Avatar Sun. 2/12/17 10:25am fred:

Hello Jeff and listeners. I just had a computer scare. That old beast -- meaning the PC, not me -- needs to hold on for a while more with the marathon coming. But it looks like I need to plan for a replacement
  Sun. 2/12/17 10:26am Doug Schulkind:

25-minute track! D:O Radio is where you separate the DJs from the children.
Avatar Sun. 2/12/17 10:27am Jeff Golick:

Hi, and welcome, @fred! That is indeed a bummer. My cell phone gave up the ghost for seemingly no reason this week and I just had to get a new one. Sucked.
Avatar Sun. 2/12/17 10:27am Jeff Golick:

@Doug: I like to think that D:O Radio is where the DJs are children.
Avatar Sun. 2/12/17 10:28am fred:

Wasn't there a Tim Berne project called Blood Count, with Chris Speed?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/12/17 10:28am coelacanth∅:

Good morning Jeff and OUTies
  Sun. 2/12/17 10:29am Doug Schulkind:

From the turntables of babes.
Avatar Sun. 2/12/17 10:29am Jeff Golick:

There was/is, @fred! I'm now sorry I didn't pull any!
Avatar Sun. 2/12/17 10:29am Jeff Golick:

'Morning, @coelacanth∅!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/12/17 10:35am coelacanth∅:

hahaha! did you just say
sorry you're sick; what do you want from the liquor store?"!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/12/17 10:37am Stanley:

Good. Time for a lie down.
Avatar Sun. 2/12/17 10:39am Jeff Golick:

@coel: yeah, that's a line from the Ted Hawkins song...!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/12/17 10:42am coelacanth∅:

haha great! i knew before i even cranked up my player this morning that i'd need to come back to this archive.
Avatar Sun. 2/12/17 10:44am fred:

I owe Scott McDowell so much for his "Hey Cecil" segment that introduced me to Cecil Taylor. His reasoning (pay tribute to the greats while they're alive) was why I got to see Taylor play. This performance had something I couldn't get from records
Avatar Sun. 2/12/17 10:45am Jeff Golick:

@fred: agreed on all counts.
Avatar Sun. 2/12/17 10:46am Jeff Golick:

Here's your Cecil Taylor Quartet:
CT, piano;
William Parker, bass;
Steve McCall, drums;
Thurman Barker, marimba, percussion.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/12/17 10:47am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

What did UM say?...
'My kid could play this.'
- Cecil Taylor's Dad...
Avatar Sun. 2/12/17 10:47am Jeff Golick:

Ha.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/12/17 10:50am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

If you go Out - you have to know how to stay Together. It's like the Fantastic Four when they'd go into another dimension in space & it'd be all far-out print imagery.
Avatar Sun. 2/12/17 10:50am fred:

Cecil Taylor should have performed with Amiri Baraka, but they did separate sets. Apparently they had an argument just before the show. Still fiery guys in their 70/80s
Avatar Sun. 2/12/17 10:51am Andy in Etobicoke:

Stanley: To quote the great Nathaniel Mayer when asked if he attended church

"The Church of lie down!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/12/17 10:57am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Amiri's gone. It's hard to think of 1994 as 23 years ago - but I'm getting used to it.
Avatar Sun. 2/12/17 11:02am Andy in Etobicoke:

Jeff: Lord Of Character kind of covers it, no?
Avatar Sun. 2/12/17 11:03am Jeff Golick:

Yup.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/12/17 11:07am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Oh, just CD release date.
@Andy: They say this snow gonna have major wind w/ it here NH.
Avatar Sun. 2/12/17 11:13am Andy in Etobicoke:

Rev: Yikes! Have you made sure all the boats are accounted for?

Just concerned.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/12/17 11:17am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Can the gyraffes see?
  Sun. 2/12/17 11:23am Doug Schulkind:

@fred
The "pay tribute while they're still alive" is a foundational concept for me. Scott McDowell is a man of big heart and big ears.
Avatar Sun. 2/12/17 11:24am Andy in Etobicoke:

Yes, they can see enough to know what`s going on.
  Sun. 2/12/17 11:24am Doug Schulkind:

@Jeff G
That was gorgeous. Very Ernst Reijsegerish.
Avatar Sun. 2/12/17 11:27am Jeff Golick:

Oh, yeah, @Doug! Euro sweet string stylings! (I need to listen to some Reijseger.)
  Sun. 2/12/17 11:40am Dean:

As an evangelical right-to-lifer, I believe in tributes to great artists before they're born.
Avatar Sun. 2/12/17 11:43am Jeff Golick:

Kinda one-ups the "I only liked their early stuff" crowd, eh, @Dean?

Hello!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/12/17 11:47am Stanley:

Caetano - Sweeeet
Avatar Sun. 2/12/17 11:48am fred:

@Dean: these recordings are so hard to find though. I never could score any
  Sun. 2/12/17 11:48am melinda:

I love those background sounds
  Sun. 2/12/17 11:50am Dean:

@fred: OTOH the music and performances of those years are entirely free of wayward influences.
Avatar Sun. 2/12/17 11:54am Dave in Vermont:

Am I hearing Matthew Sweet of FMU? Unexpected, nice.
Avatar Sun. 2/12/17 11:56am Jeff Golick:

Always expect the unexpected! Hi, @Dave in VT!
Avatar Sun. 2/12/17 11:56am Andy in Etobicoke:

Superb show, Jeff.

Best of the year candidate.

Dimension and challenges for a snowy Sunday.

Chin, Chin.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/12/17 11:58am doctorjazz:

Kanye is insane and probably in need of help, but this cut keeps giving.
  Sun. 2/12/17 12:01pm Listener Robert:

Jeff hurt his ribs?
Avatar Sun. 2/12/17 12:01pm fred:

Kanye West, how out is that? It's a good track too
Avatar Sun. 2/12/17 12:02pm Jeff Golick:

Coughed my way to a fractured rib, @Listener Robert. Hey, there!
  Sun. 2/12/17 12:03pm Listener Robert:

Oof! Not only about the rib, but about needing to cough so hard.
  Sun. 2/12/17 12:03pm Dean:

Fripp gave the nod to the sample? That's surprising, isn't it?
  Sun. 2/12/17 12:04pm Doctorjazz:

Man, that's some cough, feel better!
  Sun. 2/12/17 12:05pm Doctorjazz:

Do love that sample.
  Sun. 2/12/17 12:05pm Listener Robert:

Actual break in the rib, not a muscle pull?
Avatar Sun. 2/12/17 12:07pm Jeff Golick:

x-ray indicated a fracture...I'm not 100% sure it was the coughing, but have nothing else to point to as cause.

Ok, thanks for all the well wishes! Take care, everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/12/17 12:15pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:
