Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Avatar Fri. 2/3/17 12:16pm βrian:

In France bowling greens are made of gravel. And the name of the game is vaguely onomatopoeic: pétanque.

Thank you, Boys. Buddy M could tear up a lap steel
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/3/17 1:09pm coelacanth∅:

that nrps cover's okay. i have a bootleg of the'dead and nrps that has a decent "connection" on it.(one of my top 20 favorite 'stones songs, probably) but i don't know...i think it's parts of each band playing together but i'm not sure.
"dead flowers" is an easy song to play and sing. i've heard many excellent covers by local bands.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/3/17 1:10pm Parq:

My fave Stones cover is Devo's Satisfaction. There, I said it.
Avatar    Fri. 2/3/17 1:11pm V Priceless:

dang..missed the Feelgoods too...grrrr...
Avatar Fri. 2/3/17 1:11pm Lane Gray:

Tumbling Dice makes a good country song. But not many do it
Avatar Fri. 2/3/17 1:11pm Wendy del Formaggio:

Parq, I vastly prefer Devo's cover to the original.
And, HI UNCLE MICHAEL!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/3/17 1:12pm Uncle Michael:

Wendy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/3/17 1:13pm coelacanth∅:

when trying to think of covers that i prefer to the originals, there aren't many... maybe one...satisfaction by devo.
- though after a few more listenings i may prefer Cash's no expectorations.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/3/17 1:15pm coelacanth∅:

- the 'stones were Fucking Great once, after all.
Avatar Fri. 2/3/17 1:18pm Wendy del Formaggio:

I love the Rolling Stones, I just really don't ever need to hear the original of "Satisfaction" one more time ever. Devo made me love the song again.
"Goat's Head Soup" is a great record when I want to feel my heart hurt in a good way.
"Tattoo You" is for dancing and nostalgia.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/3/17 1:19pm Uncle Michael:

A great Stones cover isn't necessarily better thn the original, in my mind.
  Fri. 2/3/17 1:19pm Dean:

Forgot 'til now that Linda Ronstadt covered Tumbling Dice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/3/17 1:20pm Uncle Michael:

Best to forget...
  Fri. 2/3/17 1:20pm Dean:

Yeah, I know, but I actually like, even admire, Linda's old-ish records.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/3/17 1:21pm Jeff Golick:

'course, the Stones were a crack cover band themselves, and have seemingly reverted to form in their dotage.
  Fri. 2/3/17 1:22pm Dean:

Maybe we'll get a Stones' "Crazy Horses"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/3/17 1:23pm Uncle Michael:

I'm not nearly as excited by their latest album as I'm expected to be.
Avatar Fri. 2/3/17 1:23pm Wendy del Formaggio:

Dean, I would totally pay good money for that.
  Fri. 2/3/17 1:23pm Dean:

And I'd love to hear Mick take a stab at "Nessun Dorma."
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/3/17 1:23pm coelacanth∅:

Wendy - exactly. the original is Great, but yeah, after how many hundreds of times!
  Fri. 2/3/17 1:24pm Dean:

But you know we can't always get what we want.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/3/17 1:25pm Uncle Michael:

Neither could Kevin Costner.
Avatar Fri. 2/3/17 1:25pm Wendy del Formaggio:

I always thought "Off the Hook" was a cover, but apparently Mick and Keith actually wrote it. It's a great song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/3/17 1:27pm coelacanth∅:

UM @1:19, i know. there are many good versions though,so when i try to think of one worth mentioning i'm trying for a really special one; and it's a tough one to try to top the original when it comes to the rolling stones. (as with the beatles, black sabbath, Nilsson, King Crimson........)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/3/17 1:27pm Rich in Washington:

I am on this Cheap Trick kick lately.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/3/17 1:28pm Alex In Illinois:

You were mentioning covers of stones songs. There is Laibach's cover of Sympathy for the Devil. I think Angelique Kidjo has a cover of Gimme Shelter, but I actually prefer the original.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/3/17 1:29pm Uncle Michael:

The Laibach "Sympathy" is great!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/3/17 1:29pm coelacanth∅:

the 'stones' latest is *o-k*.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/3/17 1:30pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

'Off The Hook' - yeah - I was given a copy of 'Rolling Stones Now' w/out even a cover - very important album for me. All the R&B the Stones clued us into - sometimes forgotten how crucial they were after so many sponsored tour &tc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/3/17 1:33pm Rich in Washington:

Laibach's choice of covers has always been both frightening and hilarious.
  Fri. 2/3/17 1:33pm Dean:

That Key tune was totally channeling McCartney and the Fab Four.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/3/17 1:34pm coelacanth∅:

they made great versions - though i almost always prefer the originals, when i finally hear them.
i Love their suzie q!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/3/17 1:37pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

The Stones *doing* Covers was hit & miss ('My Girl'?)...unlike TheBeatles who were generally a revelation.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/3/17 1:43pm Parq:

Never thought of Mick and the boys as much on covers. The best one I can think of is "Just My Imagination" and IMO, that was only pretty good.
Avatar Fri. 2/3/17 1:45pm Lane Gray:

If Ronnie would work on his steel playing, I thought they did OK on Bob Wills is Still the King
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/3/17 1:46pm Uncle Michael:

Their "Ain't To Proud To Beg" was pretty great.
Avatar Fri. 2/3/17 1:46pm Lane Gray:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/3/17 1:48pm Jeff Golick:

"My Girl," no. But "Poison Ivy," yes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/3/17 1:48pm coelacanth∅:

they did "my girl"?
...i think their last excellent album is goats head soup and any covers they did by that time were accordingly terrible. but as late as exile they did some excellent ones. (ie "shake your hips")
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/3/17 1:49pm Jeff Golick:

"Mona," yes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/3/17 1:50pm Uncle Michael:

Goats their last excellent album? No affection for Some Girls?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/3/17 1:51pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Yeah - 'Mona' off 'Now. When the space between TheBeatles & TheWho is mooted - that's an example of something significant...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/3/17 1:54pm coelacanth∅:

i'm sure i could name 1 dozen good-great covers they did...in my ever-so-humble opinion!

No Lane...I should have mentioned that Joe Osborn played bass on it, though.

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/3/17 2:06pm doctorjazz:

The best cover that is Stones associated (to me) is the Jagger/Tosh version of Don't Look Back.
It's All Over Now from early Stones is quite good (but, the original is better (Valentinos)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/3/17 2:07pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...those 1st two maybe don't do Buck & Carl huge favors - bust 'Taste' is sublime & 'Kansas City/HeyHey' rawks. I'm of the inclination that there's something of value in every track TheBeatles did...

The Beatles produced some songs I don't like at all but I do like "A Taste of Honey". My pick for the worst Beatles song is "Birthday". Controversial?

  Fri. 2/3/17 2:12pm Dean:

"Birthday"? I never quite got the Cheap Trick/Beatles connection (other than the "Taxman" verbal allusion), but seems to me "Birthday" is a very Cheap Trick-ish Beatles tune.

'B-Day' on the lyrically empty side but a great performance & recording. There was always *something*.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/3/17 2:20pm coelacanth∅:

yeah, taste of honey shouldn't be in there. (sublime? no!) but "kansas city"? the no.1 worst thing the beatles ever did!
-i actually don't always skip over act natually and honey don't, but i can't stand kansas city and also always skip "another girl".
i like "birthday".

On the 8 String Swing album, Mike Auldridge covered Almost to Tulsa greater finesse and less exuberance. The difference between a 20 year old steel player and a 42 year old Dobro player

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/3/17 2:29pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Fabs' 'KansasCity' to me is a high-energy vocal tour-de-force. Paul can sound less than genuine, but vocally outstanding, whether ballads or screamers...Sometimes wonder if loving TheBeatles is cultural programming - or if it really is all there - but if the former it's too late for me...I can burn out on them for a bit, but it never lasts...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/3/17 2:29pm Parq:

The thing with Beatles covers is that, at the time they were putting those albums out, they mostly still *were* a cover band, a bar band expected to play stuff the customers would know. I note that the Stones' first album is all covers too. While the Stones still did the occasional cover after they became huge, I don't think the F4 ever did.
  Fri. 2/3/17 2:30pm johnk77:

norton buffalo stampede

great singer and harmony singer

TheStones thot themselves Blues/R&B) Purists - & didn't even try to write till TheBeatles made it clear there was no choice. Then they wrote great stuff! TheBeatles had been a super-hard-working Club Band. TheBeatles stopped putting covers on their albums altogether by 'RubberSoul' (late '65) - & they soon entered their Studio Only period (they were two bands - one Live & one Experimental thru '66 - but 'Revolver' was - well - the Revolving point...)

Avatar Fri. 2/3/17 2:39pm Lane Gray:

John, every time I'd seen Emmylou she seemed uncomfortable as a front. Whether it was my dad's band in the 80s or when she was in front of John Starling's band (she used them for her band around 2007)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/3/17 2:41pm coelacanth∅:

RR, it is a matter of taste too, of course; and i also was raised on the beatles so i cannot be completely objective. i just hear Paul, who's roots were not r&r but shmaltzy pop, trying to rock unconvincingly on that, and long tall sally, and a few others. George's roll over and John's R&R were more convincing.
Avatar Fri. 2/3/17 2:41pm Lane Gray:

TheBeatles' covers tended *dif* from the originals - straight g-b-d-v, for one thing. There's no supernova of energy like LittleRichard, granted! They were already Original in that sense...& natural geniuses of Arrangement. (Their Carl Perkins Rawkabilly was maybe more faithful...) Crucial! I use to think EarlyBeatles was before Pop & Rock separated - maybe true in a way - but they were actually their own Fusion from the start...

Thx UM ! 'Time you enjoyed wasting wasn't wasted.' - Lennon
Avatar Fri. 2/3/17 3:01pm Lane Gray:

Here's my take on Beatles doing covers v. their originals:
If you listen for the emotive load of the songs, they sang their own songs as if they were feeling the story; they sang and played covers as if their primary emotion was "I love this song!"
So you don't feel they're feeling the song. NEITHER WERE THEY. Just dig the song because they did.
