Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

What would that be, James?

Nor have I seen it, Jeff. Though the plot seems oddly familiar ...
Avatar Fri. 12/9/16 12:16pm Jeff Golick:

I should be careful saying this, @listener james, but I long for such a stretch. My kids pretty much commandeer the tee vee/streaming controls.

though no tunes on the record make the 'Prisoner' connection, I can't help thinking of Dr. Feelgood's great "Be Seeing You" album, as the album art (and title, obviously) contained several Prisoner-related nods, etc.

if you included "Prisoner" by the Spiders From Mars, I'm gonna freak....
  Fri. 12/9/16 12:24pm Dean:

The measure of a good rock band: you want to be in the band, up front and loud. I want to be up front and loudly playing Clash's "Prisoner." They were a good rock band.
Avatar Fri. 12/9/16 12:25pm listener james from westwood:

There are likely many other somewhat more Prisoner-y songs out there, but back in high school it made for a good double-take for those of us who'd also just gotten into the show.

Aerate the lawn? Maybe shovel snow.

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 12/9/16 12:31pm Uncle Michael:

We're going to be hearing some work that was abstractly inspired by the series. We're going to be hearing some songs that had videos shot at "The Village", etc.

Avatar Fri. 12/9/16 12:38pm Roberto:

Oh right -- during the PBS rebroadcast, there was a psychologist who analyzed every episode afterwards. Heavy stuff...
Avatar Fri. 12/9/16 12:39pm listener james from westwood:

That sample sounded very much like Peter Wyngarde.

It's been ages since I've seen the show but that droll, ironic voice of his has few peers!
Avatar Fri. 12/9/16 12:50pm listener james from westwood:

@Jeff, UM: Could this bode the appearance of a Prisoner Time a la Simpsons Time?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 12/9/16 12:50pm Lizardner Dave:

We won't be examining the 2009 version, will we? I don't remember that being particularly good.

No, Dave. I never saw it.
Avatar Fri. 12/9/16 12:56pm Alex In Illinois:

@Lizardner Dave: Yes, the 2009 version just could not hold my attention very well. It seemed to be slow paced, and there did not seem to be anything happening.
Avatar Fri. 12/9/16 12:58pm Alex In Illinois:

I think I saw most of one episode of the 2009 version one time, and I think another time I fell asleep while trying to watch another episode of it.

You could propel the entire playlist by six degree relationships from song to song. E.g., follow up a Savoy Brown tune recorded in studio X by engineer Y with a Caravan tune involving X and Y during same year.

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 12/9/16 1:19pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 12/9/16 1:23pm Brian in UK:

chromaphone not seen it for probably thirty five years but I would guess that it looks dated. It would all be CGI bollocks now. Dare I say you had to use a bit of imagination back then.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 12/9/16 1:26pm Brian in UK:

I think McGoohan probably winged a lot. He used stock British character actors of the time who usually did a good job.
Avatar Fri. 12/9/16 1:26pm listener james from westwood:

Dated I can live with. Dated I even seek out. Make do with what you've got. Limits engender creativity. Hell, when you're in the creative flow, you may not even see them as limits.

It's been pointed out plenty that they always snuck in that clue: "Who is No. 1?" "You are No. 6" was to be understood as, "Who is No. 1?" "You are, No. 6."
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 2:07pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I got obsessed w/ the program when I was school-aged - & sign on to the truism that it's one of the best ever...but I wonder what my take would be now. There are only - 16-17 episodes, I think? Thing is - I've watched less & less of anything since I became an audio stream & internet addict.
@LRobert: That makes grammatical sense of the obvious evasion, doesn't it?
     Fri. 12/9/16 2:07pm Listener Robert:

Like the promo to the 2nd season of "Lost", which just blurted out:
which was to be understood as 2 sentences or clauses.

Some people are trippier w/ just an acoustic guitar than others w/ elaborate production...okay so here's a band...I think Donovan deserves more credit than is generally given (certainly for his influence on T.Rex): he was quite early w/ it - & Syd Barrett was a prototype of Alternative in a band that later became paragons of Classic...Altho' being weird w/ just an Acoustic is surely just a pretty natural occurrence...Incredible String Band are exemplars...FreakFolk & all this...Who was that Aussie who was Syd's doppleganger? I forgot already (shame)...Yes - as The Boss said - what Elvis did for our bodies - Dylan did for our minds...

Modern life is a journey by car. The Passengers
change terribly in their reeking seats, or roam
from car to car, subject to unceasing transformation.
Inevitable progress is made toward the beginning
(there is no difference in terminals), as we
slice through cities, whose ripped backsides present
a moving picture of windows, signs, streets,
buildings. Sometimes other vessels, closed
worlds, vacuums, travel along beside to move
ahead or fall utterly behind.

...Now - who is that by, FMUvians?

There's another HDT show theme: Songs Inspired by A Thousand Plateaus. For a day when you're only allotted ten minutes. Even then, a tough bill to fill, I suspect.

     Fri. 12/9/16 2:40pm Listener Robert:

I should've mentioned that "Lost" itself referenced "The Prisoner" in a couple of brief & subtle ways. One was a visual quote, where the character the fans called Benry (played by Michael Emerson) pushed aside the clothes in his closet. The other was a thematic allusion to "The Chimes of Big Ben", in that Big Ben could be heard on the sound track, just to remind the audience that "Lost" could make things appear to be happening anytime, anywhen, and it's really some other time or place; "Lost" hammered that point home many ways, but most of the audience didn't give it enough respect, because it's so contrary to conventional exposition.
Avatar Fri. 12/9/16 2:41pm Alex In Illinois:

I recall this tune being in the last episodes.

. . . in the last episide, when #2, #6 and #48 (?) are in that truck cage, driving down the highway, and a car passes them playing the song on the radio, the 3 of them start singing it and dancing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 12/9/16 2:49pm Uncle Michael:

The actual record is heard in the earlier episode that features #48, I believe.
Avatar Fri. 12/9/16 2:52pm Daddy-o Dilly:

Really enjoying today's program. I watched "The Prisoner"'s first American broadcast on CBS in 1968. I immediately fell in love with the series and have remained a life long fan. The DVD set is a must.
     Fri. 12/9/16 2:52pm Listener Robert:

Actually MOST of "Lost" was based on British predecessor material.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 2:52pm Parq:

For the record, I didn't really understand the show in its original release, and I watched only a few episodes, mostly because I dug how weird it was.
Avatar Fri. 12/9/16 2:54pm Daddy-o Dilly:

I've always been satisfied with the idea that Number 6 was John Drake from "Danger Man"/"Secret Agent". Entirely arguable, however.

Avatar Fri. 12/9/16 2:58pm Alex In Illinois:

I was 4 in 1968, so my experience was more like Uncle Michael's, where I had some quasi recollection of a white balloon chasing people, then when our local PBS affiliate started replaying it in the late 1970's, was like: "Oh, that's what I saw"
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/9/16 2:58pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

The Beatles' ditty - used in the Last Episode - reminds me of how similar that was to 'The President's Analyst' w/ James Coburn, in many ways...

Sometimes I can't believe the 60s really happened. Great show, UM. I was really intrigued by the idea and you pulled it off splendidly.
Avatar Fri. 12/9/16 3:00pm Alex In Illinois:

I have only seen 'The President's Analyst' once! It was played on TV like once, then I have never seen it repeated. We were talking about it in school the next school day.
Avatar Fri. 12/9/16 3:01pm Daddy-o Dilly:

And that had to have been the first use of an actual Beatles record in a soundtrack other than the Beatles own movies.
     Fri. 12/9/16 3:01pm Listener Robert:

I too saw it on CBS in 1968 & again in '69. The only reason #6 isn't explicitly Danger Man (Secret Agent Man) is that they didn't have the rights to that character! But they did what they could to imply it.
     Fri. 12/9/16 3:02pm Listener Robert:

I saw "The President's Analyst" in the theater too when it came out. It was my favorite movie for decades. Now I feel soooo old!

McGoohan owned the production company that made The Prisoner. He owned the series. In a book about the show I read that by the mid 1970s the series made the break-even point and started making a profit. All gravy after that. A good investment, indeed. It was Patrick's money invested in the series.
     Fri. 12/9/16 3:06pm Listener Robert:

McGoohan owned "The Prisoner". He did not own "Secret Agent".

O M G !
I love "The Prisoner." I'll have to check out this show. For now, seeing the playlist and reading the comments, I'll say it appears the episodes are at archive.org . Watch every exhaustive hour on YT uploaded by Pmg6portmeiron, of behind-the-scene interviews with anybody still around who had worked on the show, put together for a documentary - including how McGoohan persisted to iron out the theme . . . An earlier version of the ending had the pennyfarthing wheel morph into the globe ang go "POP!" . . . See:
Sat. 12/10/16 5:02pm The Schizoid Man:

There's also a 94-minute Prisoner documentary in here done for the series' 40th anniversary
  Thu. 1/5/17 9:14pm Joe R.:

Fun show! Jazz clarinetist Don Bryon has an album and instrumental called "You Are #6" too.
