Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/16/16 1:22pm Uncle Michael:

I was in Chicago for what was, in 1985, the coldest day in the city's recorded history. -26 We went out...had tickets to see Connors and McEnroe play.
Avatar    Fri. 12/16/16 1:24pm Jeff Golick:

Seems a little cold for tennis, but i guess those guys are champs, so.

There was a roof.

Wait a minute...ice tennis...they could have that in the Winter Olympics! Like tennis, but with ice skates.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/16/16 1:29pm Uncle Michael:

And they could soak their balls in water and freeze them!

what a horrible commute. Roads solid ice. Not sure why I risked it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/16/16 1:32pm Uncle Michael:

Don't risk going home. Sleep under your desk.
Avatar Fri. 12/16/16 1:32pm glenn:

pffft. you don't know cold.

The coldest CFL game was the 1991 Grey Cup. The temperature was -27 degrees Celsius (-17 Fahrenheit). ChaCha on!

last night, was irritated by a huge stalk of celery that protruded through the crisper drawer, making closing the fridge door difficult. I sort of kicked the crisper drawer shut and it sheared off the tips of each stalk and they went flying. It was like fingers flying in one of those industrial safety splatter films.
It was hilarious. My wife didn't find it as funny as I did.
Avatar Fri. 12/16/16 1:42pm glenn:

they never do, rich. they never do.
Avatar    Fri. 12/16/16 1:42pm Jeff Golick:

Speaking of work (@Rich), it's my company's holiday lunch today, in the office. I have just received about 5 different emails informing us that there are dessert items in every department we got. I might not survive the afternoon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/16/16 1:43pm Uncle Michael:

Your wife is, of course, *wrong*.
Avatar    Fri. 12/16/16 1:43pm Jeff Golick:

(In other words, you can keep your celery.)

AND: they never are, @UM; they never are.

This is a safe space where wives can be wrong. Who has the talking stick?

Flying celery stalks sounds funny, as long as no one's eye was put out.
Avatar Fri. 12/16/16 2:06pm Rich in Washington:

I think I didn't pick the pieces up where they probably rolled under the fridge. I gotta get on that or my wife will REALLY think that wasn't funny.

The mice will like it, though.

Avatar Fri. 12/16/16 2:11pm Rich in Washington:

whenever I hear this bass riff, it reminds me of this goofy new agey witchcraft radio show that ran in Portland OR in the 80s. This was the show's theme song.
Some dude who called himself The Bear who would read from Wicca, witchcraft, Magick books and play stuff like Jade Warrior, Kitaro.
He was universally despised by the other DJs and staff for some reason.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/16/16 2:13pm Brian in UK:

Whenever Jon Anderson sings, "I feel lost in the city," I'm poised to hear Steve Perry, instead, "I feel lost in the ci-TAY."
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/16/16 2:20pm Uncle Michael:

I think Jon kinda does sing ci-TAY.
  Fri. 12/16/16 2:22pm Dean:

No. Too horrible a thought. When it comes to Yes, I'm in denial.
Avatar Fri. 12/16/16 2:24pm glenn:

yes to me is a perfect example of being too instrumentally proficient, and too editorially deficient.
  Fri. 12/16/16 2:26pm Dean:

Really? What part of Tales from Topographic Oceans needs to be struck? How can they more efficiently have said,

"Colored in pastures of chance
Dancing leaves cast spells of challenge
Amused but real in thought
We fled from the sea whole"

???
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/16/16 2:28pm Uncle Michael:

good point
Avatar Fri. 12/16/16 2:29pm glenn:

not lyrically. it's like they're trying to fit everything they know into 7 minutes.
  Fri. 12/16/16 2:32pm Dean:

It is hard to argue that they're not bombastic and pretentious, true. Even Beethoven knew how to kick back and riff now and then.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/16/16 2:44pm Brian in UK:

Did Johnny Cash ever cover this song?

Thank you, Brian. See you later...

I think Mike Rutherford has to be one of most over-looked Rock bass guitarists. So many of his Gabreil-era bass parts are nuts. Just sayin'......I'm more the school of Dennis Dunaway/JJ Burnell/Trevor Bolder, but much respect for Squire, who no doubt moved mountains for the electric rock bass, along with the great Ox, of course, and Jack Bruce.

  Fri. 12/16/16 2:56pm Dean:

Great insight, VP. I'm a huge Gabriel-era fan, but I've always subliminally figured Rutherford was struggling to keep up. I have no good reason for that sense. Another great JJ bassist: Avenel. He is missed.

I'm in India for the next three weeks, so may not be tuning in much but wishing you a happy time over the Christmas and New Year holiday.
