  Thu. 7/14/16 3:39pm Dean:

There was a time in the '90s, perhaps, when it seemed like every trendy restaurant was playing Cesária Évora. Correction: "...every trendy restaurant I managed to visit," which wasn't a whole lot, but still, I can't listen to her records to this day.
  Thu. 7/14/16 3:40pm Tommy:

Best guitar solo in a Stones song ..thanks to Mick Taylor .
Avatar Thu. 7/14/16 3:40pm Cecile:

We didn't even try to show it to them. Their minds were elsewhere, and as of June and my mother in law's stroke, they're not even going to be interested.

But my friend who is 32/32 Finnish is thrilled, bought it and has been turning all her friends on to it in Duluth

Dale, that's a big reason why I can't listen to Kind of Blue anymore.
  Thu. 7/14/16 3:40pm Tommy:

I should try showing it to them again though. At least my father in law or my stepmom.

I don't listen to Kind of Blue, because I think Somethin' Else is better.
Avatar Thu. 7/14/16 3:43pm βrian:

I saw Cesária Évora in Ann Arbor. She smoked onstage during the entire performance. Rather odd.

I've grown to be more tolerant of the later line-up, but the original Fleetwood Mac still destroys me, especially some live shows I've heard. Not just Peter Green, but Jeremy Spencer's slide was amazing, too.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 7/14/16 4:19pm Marcel M:

Peter Green era is amazing. Like right after the straight up blues stuff, when they starred getting interesting.
  Thu. 7/14/16 4:20pm Mark R:

He had a wicked tone--I'm sure guitar players could explain what guitar he used and what settings and everything, but it had a groovy, liquidy, echoey sound, really beautiful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 7/14/16 4:23pm Marcel M:

Well, he used one of the most legendary guitars ever. It was a 59 Les Paul. In and of itself very valuable. But his has become legendary. Kirk Hammett bought it recently! After Gary Moore had it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 7/14/16 4:24pm Marcel M:

It was out of phase in the middle position, which he used sometimes, and it created a kind of eerie sound. Thats a fairly common trick now, but the word is, that back then, he dropped off the pickup to be repaired, and they put the magnet in the wrong way without realizing it.
  Thu. 7/14/16 4:25pm Mark R:

Wow great Marcel, glad I asked. Whatever it was, it worked, didn't it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 7/14/16 4:26pm Marcel M:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 7/14/16 4:36pm mrdonutsu:

That's not the 59 Les Paul Ronnie Montrose bought from J. Geils - and then got stolen - and then may (or may not) have wound up in Gary Moore's hands?
Avatar Thu. 7/14/16 4:40pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 7/14/16 4:40pm Marcel M:

@mrdonutsu: No, not the Montrose Burst. Its called, "greeny."
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 7/14/16 4:41pm Marcel M:

Here's a photo of it: www.vintageandrare.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 7/14/16 4:42pm Marcel M:

Peter Green sold it to Gary more for a really low sum. After he kind of lost it he wanted him to have it but Gary felt weird taking it for nothing. Later on, a few guys got Peter a new Burst, and he ended up giving it away to a guy in his elevator building. It was later recovered in a pawn shop.
Avatar Thu. 7/14/16 4:42pm Cecile:

donutsu, she was born here, but her family lineage is all Finnish.
  Thu. 7/14/16 4:46pm P=90:

No, @mrdonutsu, that's a different "collectible" Les Paul- but mainly because of the history of who it has belonged to, not some unique sonic quality of the instrument. And Peter Green's Les Paul was likewise not such an extraordinary instrument. It was Peter Green's style, bot the guitar. He would have sounded great on any Les Paul, or any guitar he chose.
  Thu. 7/14/16 4:47pm nic:

Avatar Thu. 7/14/16 4:47pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 7/14/16 4:48pm Marcel M:

I wasn't trying to imply the guitar made Peter magical. Just explaining the out of phase thing. Which back then was not a common trick.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 7/14/16 4:52pm Bas NL:

Swarm for Tithonus.. sounded good Fabio. I've seen Ankersmit live only once but a very memorable live act.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 7/14/16 4:52pm fred:

Is Fabio doing this on purpose? I think he is. Clicks while people are going on about magnet placement. This isn't coincidence, sheeple!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 7/14/16 4:53pm mrdonutsu:

It's very interesting - the relationship between the musician and the instrument - particularly with electric guitars. Its such a dude thing to fetishize the instrument (e.g. Paul Allen) and neglect that it was the musician and not the player who imbued the magic thereinto.

But there certainly are uniquely magical combinations.

While you can tear apart Jimmy Page for the blatant ripoff he pulled with White Summer / Black Mountain Side, for me there is pure genius in his choosing to then perform it on a $30 Danelectro.

i only miss living in nyc when i hear Fabio.
Avatar Thu. 7/14/16 5:01pm Cecile:

actually, I looked at the brochure, and it was more like getting a divorce and being broke that probably explained the change in tone.
  Thu. 7/14/16 5:02pm Linda Lee:

that could do it too.
Avatar Thu. 7/14/16 5:02pm Cecile:

or that's what I gleaned. chemicals might also be a big part.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 7/14/16 5:02pm Marcel M:

Thats Greene AVE Fabio! ;-)
  Thu. 7/14/16 5:03pm Linda Lee:

fact is that amazing new pharmaceuticals were coming into wide distribution at that time. i don't thin we can downplay the impact on the public mind.
  Thu. 7/14/16 5:04pm P-90:

Just to clarify: Green's "Fleetwood Mac" Les Paul came back from a repair job with some small idiosyncrasies that made some slightly different sounds available. But there was really nothing so special about that guitar. Remember, Les Pauls were rare at that time, and English musicians coveted them and were fascinated by every one that came along. There's been this legend that Peter Green sounded so great partly because he used a particular guitar. He actually sounded great because he was a great musician. @Narcel: Also, the same shop that reversed the magnet on that neck pickup also rewound the coils with the "wrong" gauge of wire, which also made it sound just a bit different.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 7/14/16 5:04pm fred:

Albert Ayler? That's so out there... I can't explain it to anyone, all I can do is play it and hope something clicks
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 7/14/16 5:05pm Goatpuncher:

Another thing tonight, at least acc. to the Nonsense NYC list: "Sonic Arts is a presentation of sound works and performances in two to eight channels by established and emerging sound practitioners in New York. Up to eight channels means we have a circle of speakers and the audience will sit in the middle, surrounded by sound. Free." Halyards, 406 3rd Ave. at 6th St., Bklyn
Avatar Thu. 7/14/16 5:05pm Cecile:

i have a real weakness for recordings that sound like they're from musty reel-to-reels. probably because i played with musty reel-to-reels as a child.
  Thu. 7/14/16 5:09pm P-90:

@Linda: Musty reel-to-reels sound so warm and organic compared to contemporary digitized stuff.
  Thu. 7/14/16 5:11pm Linda Lee:

agree. but that seems curmudgeonly ..

I used Lava once on an aunt's recommendation, as I had really bad acne at 13. Agonizing experience. Don't wash your face with Lava.
