Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/27/16 1:01pm Artie Haywire:

Subtle.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/27/16 1:01pm joe:

@Lane: this is also the HDT after my anniversary. Hit 18 on 5/24. My marriage can legally drink now, in some states. <marriage joke here>
Avatar Fri. 5/27/16 1:30pm Jeff Golick:

Actually, looks like the drinking age is 21 pretty much country-wide.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/27/16 1:30pm coelacanth:

i have no interest in arena concerts. if i cannot see what the fingers are doing on the guitar i don't see the point.
when i've attended one by someone else's decision, i (we) have found open spaces toward the back where there's no point in trying to see the band, and just danced.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/27/16 1:32pm Uncle Michael:

I got 10th row for ZZ TOP and Gov't Mule!
Avatar Fri. 5/27/16 1:34pm Alex In Illinois:

I think I have only been to an arena concert once. If I had a job of designing an expensive arena concert for a band, I would hire some illusionists as consultants, and design the show so that it looks like the band members frequently materialize among the stands.
Avatar Fri. 5/27/16 1:34pm 67tele:

(unrelated to anything except rock n' roll love): has anyone seen a link to 'Western Eyes' by the fabulous and wonderful X-Teens (not Portishead)? I just wanted to hear it (after UM show is over of course) for a needed Friday uplift
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/27/16 1:35pm joe:

The NJ ZZ Top show is the last of Greg Allman on the tour the very next show is Gov't Mules first.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/27/16 1:36pm Uncle Michael:

Welcome to the beach party, melinda!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/27/16 1:36pm coelacanth:

yeh, i was just thinking it's different for seated shows, if i'm close enough. all my arena shows were either general admittance, or nosebleed seats. (& i guess vip sections)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/27/16 1:37pm Uncle Michael:

Joe, I think there are some overlaps on the tour.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/27/16 1:37pm Parq:

Coalec at 1:30, I fear that's just how it's going to be, but a good friend is offering me a ticket and I haven't seen *any* live music in months, so what the hey.
  Fri. 5/27/16 1:39pm Dean:

I can't find a correlation between venue size or seating location and quality of show. Cheap Trick got better the bigger the venue, for instance. I've heard Brotzmann in big venues (the arena in Victoriaville) and small (a hole in the wall in Berkeley). Both were impressive, albeit in different ways. I did enjoy sitting directly at stage center once at a Jimmy Smith show, but mostly because after I ordered a second martini, he told me to cut down on drinking.
  Fri. 5/27/16 1:40pm melinda:

My only arena concert was Bowie's Let's Dance tour, I think I was 13 and it was exciting and disappointing at the same time, because we were so far from the stage.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/27/16 1:42pm coelacanth:

right, Parq. i rarely say never! i went to a monster truck show in philly a few years ago! i would never have paid for it but there were 4 of us and we made it fun.
  Fri. 5/27/16 1:42pm Dean:

Managed to catch Barclay James Harvest at Wembley many years ago, but only the last 20 minutes or so of the show. Very back, nosebleed. I was thrilled to be there.

  Fri. 5/27/16 1:45pm Dean:

I so want to go to a monster truck show! Even more, drag racing: loud, smelly, visually spectacular, sheer sensory overload. Gillions of dollars blown on five seconds of technomachismo, the Platonic ideal of "waste of time." And worth every penny.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/27/16 1:45pm joe:

@UM kind of bummed though because I am not a GA fan but I do really enjoy Gov't Mule and I have been dying to see ZZ top for some time now.

  Fri. 5/27/16 1:49pm Dean:

If you factor out all those Grateful Dead shows I saw--every one of them, as I've mentioned once or twice--I've only attended an ordinary number of live shows, even fewer post-kids. (Except Zeke. Can't ever miss Zeke.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/27/16 1:49pm joe:

Yeah was kind of a choice life style change a few years back after putting so many things on hold for so long and the kid off to college was to do as much a possible.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/27/16 1:49pm joe:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/27/16 1:50pm Uncle Michael:

You're not going to answer me, are you Dean?
Avatar Fri. 5/27/16 1:51pm Alex In Illinois:

I am singing that to my wife the next time I eat Salmon. She is not a Salmon fan. Actually, she will eat it at a restaurant or someone else's house, but can't stand the smell of it cooking in our kitchen or on our dogs breath if I give our dog a salmon skin treat.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/27/16 1:51pm joe:

@Dean what state are you in (I mean state of residency not mind)?
  Fri. 5/27/16 1:52pm Dean:

@joe: Word has it there's a new album in the works. I'm hoping they'll be in town again soon, or I'll have to head to Seattle to hear them.

@UM: I will, eventually.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/27/16 1:55pm coelacanth:

i don't go to shows just to be able to say i was there. if i'm too far away to see but subtly moving images in the distance; and the sound it just okay -as it usually is at that distance, i have other things to do...excellent local bands to see up close.
there are artists i'd love to see but only if i actually can- so i plan on never seeing them. i'll live. i've been lucky many times and i'm thankful for more concert experience than most people.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/27/16 1:55pm joe:

The only reason I ask is things like Groupon constantly are selling cheap tickets to things like Monster Truck and drag race. They were just offering one for over here in NJ for $4 Monster Truck

There was a Groupon for the ZZ Top show in NJ, wonder if it's still active.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 5/27/16 1:59pm doctorjazz:

Does sound slow...
  Fri. 5/27/16 2:00pm Dean:

A great suggestion, joe, Groupon and the like.

I first heard them in a tiny Hollywood record store--talk about close up!--when they "opened" for a buddy's band. I was blown away, and since then I try to catch them whenever possible. Acknowledging my affection for the band, my 10YO purchased "T-500" for his hand-me-down iPod.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 5/27/16 2:01pm doctorjazz:

That's more like it...
  Fri. 5/27/16 2:01pm Dean:

Avatar Fri. 5/27/16 2:05pm Jeff Golick:

I saw a jazz/improv show at Le Poisson Rouge on Wednesday night and found it... frustrating. Smallish room, but SO MUCH TALKING. I don't fully understand the need? point? of talking throughout a perfornace in an intimate space. Like, if you want background music, feel free to listen at home.
Avatar Fri. 5/27/16 2:06pm Jeff Golick:

Yes, I am old, why do you ask.

  Fri. 5/27/16 2:08pm Dean:

I can report some of the same at the Brotzmann show last week, Jeff G. Not SO MUCH, but SOME chatter while the musicians were working. And of course the requisite holding-up of phone cameras to capture stills and videos.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/27/16 2:09pm joe:

@jeff golick that is a very strange shaped room. I've come to find in the NYC area many of the people who show up at shows are not there with any interest as to what is going on but want to have the ability to say they were there. I was at an acoustic show in the basement of Bowery Electric and the audience and the artist had to ask people to keep their voices down.
Avatar Fri. 5/27/16 2:09pm 67tele:

Thanks, UM!
Avatar Fri. 5/27/16 2:11pm Jeff Golick:

@joe: yeah, it's a weird room. Weird vibe, too. Not quite sure what it wants to be or something. And yes, agreed re NYC folks who show up simply as simply something to do -- "let's see a show" -- and aren't really there to listen. Which seems weird to me, but...I probably seem weird to them.
Avatar Fri. 5/27/16 2:11pm geezerette:

We saw ZZ Top at The Greek Theater, which is a pretty intimate venue, GREAT SHOW!!!
Also funny cause audience were mostly three generations of bikers, tattooed grandads, moms & dads and kids,(kids had transfer tats), and the adults were passing joints back and forth the whole time. Smoke thick enough to be a stage effect.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/27/16 2:12pm coelacanth:

i saw the dead once. my first concert -c.1977, at madison square garden. it was an interesting study in sociology, but not interesting enough to see them again. staying home with the records and a flock of deadhead girls; smoking and maybe drinking or tripping was much more satisfying.
i did see further a few times.

I moved from Brooklyn to Central NJ...if you think clubs have a lot of talking in NYC, man, it can be torture seeing a show in a jazz club in NJ (the few that exist), gets me crazy, seems it would be inconvenient if you're there to talk to have to scream over the performer.
Avatar Fri. 5/27/16 2:17pm 67tele:

the Legendary Hitchhikers...wouldn't be a half-bad band name
  Fri. 5/27/16 2:17pm Dean:

@geezerette: The Greek in Griffith Park? Definitely a fun venue. I only remember seeing Renaissance with Jean-Luc Ponty there, 1977.

John Anson Ford Theater is even smaller!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/27/16 2:17pm coelacanth:

i'd like to see zz top. i have seen government mule. it was a free concert in "echo lake park" in westfield nj that i happened upon while riding a bicycle through. they'd just formed i guess and i'd never heard of them. -excellent.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/27/16 2:19pm Uncle Michael:

Gov't Mule is a great band that I've seen many, many times...so many of the songs are such downers though. That's beginning to wear.

I expect to see Billy Gibbons and Warren haynes jamming and that will be great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/27/16 2:19pm coelacanth:

Was unaware of name change, geezerette. That'll clear up an ambiguity. I work across the street for a Greek Theater in another town. (Dylan's due here soon, as is...sitting down?...Don Henley.) We used to go to the JA Ford for classical shows, summer nights, bring a picnic.

Dean, yep,it's that time of year again! Picnics under stars & choppers listening to live music, the best!

Don Henley?!!! why o why?
  Fri. 5/27/16 2:27pm Dean:

Yep. Once being dropped off at work pre-8:00 a.m. I noticed a line of folks forming for the evening's show. I wondered who it might be, so I checked the calendar. Turns out it was a young pop celeb, Ed somebody-or-other, whom my 10YO knew about. I realized (yet again) how out of it I've become. Another time I mentioned to a buddy of mine that Peter Gabriel was playing "across the street." He and I used to travel up and down the state to Gabriel shows in the early '80s. A week later I get a package in the mail from my buddy. It was CD-Rs of the show.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/27/16 2:33pm Parq:

Dean, there's a showcase venue near me, and kiddos often line up, sometimes much earlier in the day. I almost never have any familiarity with the bands booked there, but the marque is often fun. My favorite: "IMPENDING DOOM TUESDAY"
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/27/16 2:34pm Parq:

  Fri. 5/27/16 2:37pm Dean:

Just think, Parq, if that venue were hosting shows back in the '60s and if the Mamas & Papas were due to appear early in the week, the marquee would read, "'Monday, Monday' Monday!"

Also a Westwood and a Glendale.
  Fri. 5/27/16 2:41pm Dean:

If that link to the Curley Money page is accurate and "A Little Bird Told Me" was issued in late 1958, then that comports with copyright records from the time. The song by Mackey and Brooks was copyrighted Sept. 2, '58.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/27/16 2:42pm Parq:
