I play music that is old and that is new. Some of it is digital while some is analog. It is from many different countries; sometimes it is loud and at other times it is quiet.

皆さん、こんばんは! Good evening,
everyone!
I'm with you for the first hour only,
Mayuko chan.
Avatar    Mon. 5/2/16 5:01pm Webhamster Henry:

Good afternoon Mayuko! I remembered to tune in!
Avatar    Mon. 5/2/16 5:02pm fred:

Good afternoon Mayuko. I'm so psyched for this show
Avatar    Mon. 5/2/16 5:03pm listener james from westwood:

Good Monday, Mayuko and all! I will indeed accept the charges on this call from Tokyo!
Avatar    Mon. 5/2/16 5:08pm fred:

I had never even heard of Ryuichi Sakamoto before getting a signed copy of Beauty. There was a signing at the local Virgin store, and that looked more appealing than an accounting class. So I went and soon became a fan
Avatar    Mon. 5/2/16 5:10pm Mayuko:

Thank you for tuning in, everyone! I'm psyched to do this Beauty-themed show today too! The Ryuichi Sakamoto's album in which I heard Youssou N'dour and Misako Koja and all other great music for the first time ever.
Avatar    Mon. 5/2/16 5:18pm fred:

This album was my introduction to music from Okinawa. For years it was all (with Neo Geo), but the seeds were planted
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 5/2/16 5:23pm rbxbx:

heya Play Vertigo pals! Everyone have a good WFMU record fair weekend?
  Mon. 5/2/16 5:24pm melinda:

Hi Mayuko
Avatar    Mon. 5/2/16 5:25pm Mayuko:

@fred yah for me too. Using Okinawa music then seemed to be a bit controversial though, which is understandable that it's a sensitive issue. It's a bit similar to maybe like a white person using native american music element in his music. I personally think this album was done with respect and credit and don't think it's any cultural exploitation, but.
  Mon. 5/2/16 5:25pm Dave B.:

Sorry the weather didn't cooperate for a double feature.
Avatar    Mon. 5/2/16 5:26pm Mayuko:

Hello, welcome on board, rbxbx, melinda, and Dave B!! Thank you for tuning in!
Avatar    Mon. 5/2/16 5:26pm Mayuko:

Wish I could have done some shopping at the fair!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 5/2/16 5:29pm rbxbx:

It was good! I managed to see and acquire a few nice things without spending too much :)
Avatar    Mon. 5/2/16 5:30pm Mayuko:

(My brain been haunted by this Alexis Zoumbas' violin for some weeks now)
Avatar    Mon. 5/2/16 5:32pm fred:

It opened my mind to it, and much later led me to dive into that music. I'm not special, so if it worked for me, it must have worked for many. And it wasn't gimmicky like some "world music" of the time could be
Avatar    Mon. 5/2/16 5:33pm Mayuko:

@rbxbx great, glad you had a good time at the fair! Did you see the collage art exhibit? So bummer I couldn't make it to see them.
Avatar    Mon. 5/2/16 5:37pm fred:

Sanjo is a bit too showy for me, but have you heard Sinawi? It's like traditional Korean free jazz. Mind-blowing stuff
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 5/2/16 5:37pm rbxbx:

Mayuko: I didn't! Somehow missed ._.

I was with a friend that was kind of in a hurry so I didn't get to explore as fully as I might have liked to.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 5/2/16 5:38pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Hallooo from the grocery store!
Avatar    Mon. 5/2/16 5:39pm Mayuko:

@fred yah! I totally agree. Apparently Sakamoto san studied so called world music in college with Fumio Koizumi, the most important ethnomusicologist professor in Japan, so he must have been very much aware that it really shouldn't be gimmicky when you deal with world music.
Avatar    Mon. 5/2/16 5:41pm fred:

Asadoya Yunta!!!
Avatar    Mon. 5/2/16 5:45pm Mayuko:

Probably it wasn't too big, it was artwork by the brother of Greg Harrison (who did the monkey becoming a DJ graphic during the marathon) Looked good in the pics.

Hello Ken! Happy grocery shopping!
  Mon. 5/2/16 5:47pm David:

This month is Cleveland's two day Asian Festival. Music, dancers, various martial arts, good food..
I am excited to see 古箏 guzheng player, similar to kayageum which you just played.

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 5/2/16 5:48pm rbxbx:

This is a riff on another track, right? Or vice-versa? Can't remember the other track though...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 5/2/16 5:50pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I love this Fadoul track!
Avatar    Mon. 5/2/16 5:54pm listener james from westwood:

Fun first half! No Record Fair adventures for me this year, but looking forward to Julianna Barwick's new album dropping this week!
  Mon. 5/2/16 5:58pm David:

James, Julianna is from my home state Missouri.
I don't know which city..
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 5/2/16 5:59pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I have the stuff I need. Now to pay and hit the road for home. Thanks, Price Chomper, for the free Wi-Fi.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 5/2/16 6:02pm rbxbx:

Whoa! I started reading Confessions of a Mask a few weeks ago. Had no idea the Sakamoto connection. Weiirdd.
Avatar    Mon. 5/2/16 6:04pm fred:

I don't know whether to root for Romance or Chinsagu No Hana at this point

Joe!!! I love this cover too makes me so happy!!
Avatar    Mon. 5/2/16 6:15pm fred:

That was a great live moment when I saw Sakamoto in the very early 90's. Wyatt wasn't on stage, but that was the first time I saw a Kora
Avatar    Mon. 5/2/16 6:16pm geezerette:

Mayuko this is wonderful.
Howdy assembled!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 5/2/16 6:17pm coelacanth:

hi Mayuko and all
Avatar    Mon. 5/2/16 6:25pm Mayuko:

geezerette and coelacanth! Thank you for tuning in!!
Avatar    Mon. 5/2/16 6:26pm Mayuko:

Early 90's Sakamoto shows must have been fun I suppose - lots of dancy stuff, like heartbeat and neo geo.
Avatar    Mon. 5/2/16 6:26pm fred:

Back in those long gone college years, I had my mother knit a sweater with YMO's logo in front and the band members' names in the back (in kanji). One of a kind
Avatar    Mon. 5/2/16 6:29pm fred:

Romance!!!
Avatar    Mon. 5/2/16 6:30pm Mayuko:

That sweater truly is one of a kind.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 5/2/16 6:31pm coelacanth:

fred do you still have that?
Avatar    Mon. 5/2/16 6:32pm Mayuko:

This is a cover of Stephen Foster’s song "Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair" from 1854 - arranged into Okinawa folk music style - I think Sakamoto san got an amazing idea here, so so beautiful.
Avatar    Mon. 5/2/16 6:33pm fred:

I love this song so much!
Sakamoto introduced me to a lot of wildly different music. Not as much as dance, but close. Dance first pointed me to Steve Reich, but Sakamoto san was the first I saw use phasing live
Avatar    Mon. 5/2/16 6:34pm fred:

@coelacanth: Of course!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 5/2/16 6:35pm coelacanth:

i got the Beauty cassette back in the day, based on just his name -having not heard him solo. i tuned right in to that because it was familiar but it took a while for the rest of the album to grasp me.
it did though.
Avatar    Mon. 5/2/16 6:36pm fred:

I love this song even more!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 5/2/16 6:37pm coelacanth:

fred, it'd be a shame if you didn't. i still have stuff like that, even if i cannot wear it anymore.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 5/2/16 6:39pm coelacanth:

(although my vintage Clash tshirt was stolen, along with a hand-painted (by me) X-ray Spex t.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 5/2/16 6:40pm melinda:

Famfa is nice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 5/2/16 6:42pm coelacanth:

(...not that i'm putting t shirts up with a hand-knitted sweater!...okay i'll shut up now.)
Avatar    Mon. 5/2/16 6:43pm fred:

@coelacanth: I don't wear it these days though: it's just too hot for a wool sweater. I wear T-shirts year-round now, I haven't seen snow in years
Avatar    Mon. 5/2/16 6:44pm Mayuko:

A hand-painted T stolen!!! That's serious!!!

I love that Famfa so much, melinda. Glad you liked it too!
Avatar    Mon. 5/2/16 6:46pm fred:

To me that's Elephant Man music. I'm a Lynch fan
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 5/2/16 6:46pm coelacanth:

for what it's worth, and to me it's worth a lot, i ran into the thief 7 years later and she apologised.
Avatar    Mon. 5/2/16 6:46pm listener james from westwood:

@coelacanth, if I had Wolverine-like sensory powers, I'd offer to track that shirt down. That's a huge bummer.
I hear this track and I imagine the hundreds of trampoline-injured kids on the Simpsons' lawn.
Avatar    Mon. 5/2/16 6:47pm Mayuko:

This is my good bye track for today - stay tuned for Global Grease with Kim Sorise starting at 7pm! wfmu.org...
Avatar    Mon. 5/2/16 6:48pm Mayuko:

hundreds of trampoline-injured kids on lawn?! that sounds tragic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 5/2/16 6:48pm coelacanth:

thanks anyway james!
...was this in the elephant man? it's all a blur.
Avatar    Mon. 5/2/16 6:49pm listener james from westwood:

Also used as the camera panned across Moe's Tavern, showing smashed furniture and beaten patrons after Marge in her bodybuilder mode went Hulk on the joint.
Avatar    Mon. 5/2/16 6:49pm geezerette:

a lovely good bye
Avatar Mon. 5/2/16 6:50pm Rich in Washington:

I love this track. It WAS in the Elephant Man.
Apparently Lynch loves this song.
Avatar    Mon. 5/2/16 6:50pm listener james from westwood:

Wikipedia sez yes, coelacanth!
Avatar    Mon. 5/2/16 6:50pm fred:

Thank you so much Mayuko, you know how much this meant to me
Avatar    Mon. 5/2/16 6:51pm listener james from westwood:

It's gotten quite a number of uses from what it seems! Mark of a classic.
Avatar    Mon. 5/2/16 6:52pm geezerette:

I love the way it ascends at the end,hopeful...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 5/2/16 6:52pm coelacanth:

it definitely has heart-string-tugging potential.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 5/2/16 6:56pm coelacanth:

all the rules are different for classical music.
...catagorised by composer, not performer; catagorised by last name, instead of first...
Avatar    Mon. 5/2/16 6:59pm listener james from westwood:

Huge thanks for the fine show, Mayuko!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 5/2/16 6:59pm coelacanth:

Thanks Mayuko.
'till then folks...
Avatar    Mon. 5/2/16 7:01pm Mayuko:

Thank you all so much for sonically hanging out with me! Have a beautiful week, everyone.
