Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

@Doug, did your show get cut short or did I nod off for a few moments?
Avatar Fri. 3/18/16 12:07pm βrian:

If it's Alice, I'll need to listen from the cork-lined "sound room" down in the basement. I may even flip on the black light...
Avatar Fri. 3/18/16 12:08pm Mary Wing:

Everything sounds better in black light, yep. But only one lucky person will have this 15-CD Alice Cooper box set!
Avatar Fri. 3/18/16 12:08pm chromaphone:

Wait a second, neither of these DJs sound like Uncle Michael...
Avatar Fri. 3/18/16 12:09pm βrian:

And being from Wisconsin, we think of Illinois as "down there."
Avatar Fri. 3/18/16 12:10pm Doug Schulkind:

Uncle Michael and Mary, you are both hot! (And both mics are too hot.)
Avatar Fri. 3/18/16 12:10pm βrian:

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/18/16 12:24pm Brian in UK:

I can remember the first time I heard Uncle Johns Band. Fair turned my head. Garcia's playing steel sounded quite unorthodox.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/18/16 12:30pm Parq:

Stop saying "PIN Number"! The "N" stands for number! You are saying "Personal Identification Number Number".
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/18/16 12:30pm listener james from westwood:

I love that Uncle Michael plays music from many, many decades, but man, he has a way of picking tracks from the seventies that so make me wish I was an adult during that decade and able to hunt down and hear this music live. Hinky Dinky Time gives me a chance to have that wonderful musical seventies I didn't grow up with and likely couldn't have afforded on my allowance!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/18/16 12:32pm doctorjazz:

Hey Hinky Dinky folks (missed the Dead...damn work!)
NOBODY ELSE plays the Dead!
  Fri. 3/18/16 12:33pm Dean:

The Alice Cooper box set ought to be a prize available only to billion dollar donors.
Avatar Fri. 3/18/16 12:33pm Doug Schulkind:

@Parq
Are you an "RBIs" guy or an "RBI" guy?
  Fri. 3/18/16 12:35pm Dean:

Attorney Generals or Attorneys General? La Brea Tar Pits or The La Brea Tar Pits?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/18/16 12:35pm Parq:

Doug, let's just say that "ATM machine" is another one of my berserk buttons.
Avatar Fri. 3/18/16 12:35pm Mary Wing:

And ATM machine is redundant too...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/18/16 12:36pm listener james from westwood:

@Doug: Oooh, that's a good one. In about 2 weeks, I'll see a copy editor who works for ESPN who may have an answer for that.
  Fri. 3/18/16 12:36pm Dean:

World Wide Web or Double-u-double-u-double-u?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/18/16 12:37pm Parq:

Dean, imagine if everyone went around saying "WWW Web".
Avatar Fri. 3/18/16 12:37pm Mary Wing:

The comic genius of Ernie Kovacs is the next prize up for a $20 pledge at wfmu.org!
Avatar Fri. 3/18/16 12:38pm Doug Schulkind:

I submit that RBI has become a word unto itself. (It even has a nickname "Ribbie") and thus a hitter can accumulate any number of RBIs plural.
Avatar Fri. 3/18/16 12:38pm Doug Schulkind:

But back to the ATM machine: Bust one open and PLEDGE!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/18/16 12:38pm Jeff:

I always use the loot-soot rhyme.
  Fri. 3/18/16 12:38pm Dean:

Or world-wide WWW.
  Fri. 3/18/16 12:39pm Dean:

Speaks, thpeaks, or thpeakth?
Avatar Fri. 3/18/16 12:40pm Lane Gray:

RBI is already plural, but RBIs doesn't grate on me like ATM Machine (surely that's a machine that makes ATMs?) or PIN number.
Avatar Fri. 3/18/16 12:40pm Doug Schulkind:

@Jeff
I'd like to see Ted Leonard's avatar.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/18/16 12:41pm Jeff Golick:

Where are we all on the Latin-derived plurals: data is/are? media is/are?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/18/16 12:42pm Parq:

People make the same mistake with the title "Attorney General". They don't realize that "General" is an adjective, so they say "Attorney Generals" and not "Attorneys General". Remember when the Repubs decided this gave them the opportunity to aggrandize themselves and started referring to Bush's AG as "General Ashcroft"? The Dems actually fell for it and started referring to Clinton's pick as "General Reno". For a brief, horrible moment, it looked like that atrocity would actually catch on.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/18/16 12:43pm listener james from westwood:

Lane, I feel RBIs" is one of those things that usage has sanded down to acceptability or tolerability.
Ted Leonard!!!
Jeff: It varies from publisher to publisher and style guide to style guide. Best to be consistent within the MS once you get a directive. The tower of plural "data" in English usage is under siege, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/18/16 12:44pm listener james from westwood:

I am actually tracking use of singular/plural "data" in the current MS to see which way the author leans. Publisher has no preference and the author's previous book is inconsistent. One more datum for the checklist. ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/18/16 12:44pm Jeff:

I'll drown my sorrows in a few gins and tonic.
Avatar Fri. 3/18/16 12:45pm Mary Wing:

This is such an awesome cover of Nights on Broadway!
  Fri. 3/18/16 12:45pm Dean:

I am a hardcore Latin-derived plural proponent: data are, media are. No compromise. This is the only sense in which I'm hardcore.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/18/16 12:46pm Brian in UK:

Is the plural of crocus, crocuses or crocii?
Avatar Fri. 3/18/16 12:46pm ndbob:

Indeed James:)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/18/16 12:46pm joe:

Hey UM is in house so you can call in your pledges and let them know on the phone and they will run it down to him and Mary. 800-989-9368
  Fri. 3/18/16 12:46pm Dean:

The plural of Prius is, "Fuck all of you Prius drivers."
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/18/16 12:47pm Stanley:

A croc of crocii
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/18/16 12:47pm drr:

regarding "www web", It's always puzzled me why radio and communications have such a liking for the letter "double-u". It's the slowest letter to say. It's actually two letters.
  Fri. 3/18/16 12:47pm Dean:

You can blame Sir Tim Berners-Lee. Evil incarnate that guy.
Avatar Fri. 3/18/16 12:48pm βrian:

What about "none is" versus "none are?"
  Fri. 3/18/16 12:48pm Dean:

Just realized I'm in a shitty mood this a.m.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/18/16 12:50pm Brian in UK:

Dean would you like an humbug.
  Fri. 3/18/16 12:50pm Dean:

Used to insist upon "none is," as in "not one is," but then I read a good argument for "none are" to the effect that it plausibly means "not any." So I'm chill.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/18/16 12:50pm Jeff Golick:

@βrian: that "none is/are" is a doozy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/18/16 12:51pm Parq:

Dean @ 12:46 - Rat own.
  Fri. 3/18/16 12:52pm Dean:

Touché, Brian in UK. Are there other Brians in UK?
Avatar Fri. 3/18/16 12:52pm βrian:

In any case, I refuse to conjugate single nouns as plural, collective or not.
  Fri. 3/18/16 12:53pm Dean:

Parq, no kidding, right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/18/16 12:53pm Stevel:

Doubling up on the Coop! So many favorite shows on WFMU/GTD. Pretty sure I tagged UM in my Swag for Life pledge (should have tagged Mary W, but its possible that I suck.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/18/16 12:54pm Parq:

And then there's this new thing of using a plural pronoun as a gender-neutral singular pronoun, as in "The person who called in the last pledge said that Hinky Dinky Time is their favorite show". I catch myself using that one. It's just so seductively convenient.
Avatar Fri. 3/18/16 12:55pm βrian:

My autocorrect insists the Prius is Priapus. Works for me, I guess.
Avatar Fri. 3/18/16 12:56pm Doug Schulkind:

Alice's "Schools Out" was one of my earliest music obsessions. Listened to it over and over and over and over.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/18/16 12:56pm Stanley:

@Parq - sure, it's a lot easier than saying 'his or her'. But I worry that it is incorrect.
  Fri. 3/18/16 12:57pm Dean:

At least the person who called in the last pledge didn't say that Hinky Dinky Time is they're favorite show.
Avatar Fri. 3/18/16 12:58pm Doug Schulkind:

I'm shooting for no less than 26/7!
Avatar Fri. 3/18/16 12:58pm βrian:

@Parq: Where my wife teaches, a pro-forma part of a person's public introduction specifies their chosen pronouns. (That is, pronouns one should use when referring to them.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/18/16 12:59pm Brian in UK:

@Dean I am sure there are numerous Brains. Unfortunately they are not pledging.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/18/16 1:00pm Brian in UK:

Stanley did you hear Bill on Stan's show this AM?
Avatar Fri. 3/18/16 1:01pm still b/p:

Quite a 70s/NY-in-decline montage (Son of Sam in there four times) accompanies Long Way To Go on the YouTubes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/18/16 1:02pm Parq:

βrian, yeah, my daughter the librarian has told me about that one. When I think about how berserk it's going to drive conservatives, I like it a lot more.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/18/16 1:02pm Stanley:

@Brain - naah. Didn't know he was on. Stan's show is not so much fun without a message board.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/18/16 1:02pm Brian in UK:

Must be frank and say it is none of the subjects above that get up my snout more than the ubiquitous !!!!! after comments.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/18/16 1:03pm listener james from westwood:

Parq, based on what copy editors are seeing, as reported at recent conferences, usage of the singular "they" is growing, as, slowly, is acceptance of it. The need it fills is expanding, too. What βrian notes is part of that, as is convenience and flow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/18/16 1:03pm listener james from westwood:

Last comment; rephrase to "as _are_ convenience and flow." Multitasking; feh.
Avatar Fri. 3/18/16 1:04pm βrian:

@Parq: Librarian? Does she refer to you as meta-daddy?
Avatar Fri. 3/18/16 1:04pm Lane Gray:

Is that Don Worden? Do you have the liner notes?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/18/16 1:04pm Stanley:

ooops, what i meant say is no playlist. i saw the board was rocking with the usual peeps (sans moi of course)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/18/16 1:04pm Brian in UK:

Long live libraries.
Avatar Fri. 3/18/16 1:04pm βrian:

Linked MetaDaddy is an especially big thing, these days.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/18/16 1:05pm Parq:

Oh βrian, please, don't give her ideas.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/18/16 1:05pm Stanley:

@Brian - yup, I'm going to have watch myself on that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/18/16 1:06pm Brian in UK:

Stanley, the Canterbury WoodElf lists Stan's music after or during the show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/18/16 1:06pm KevinfromBayRidge:

Yup!

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/18/16 1:08pm Stanley:

That's very public spirited of old Canterbury Elf.
  Fri. 3/18/16 1:08pm Dean:

Tip of the hat to βrian for associating metadata with librarians.
Avatar Fri. 3/18/16 1:11pm βrian:

"RDF" is pillow-talk where I come from. "MODS" is a way of life.
  Fri. 3/18/16 1:11pm Dean:

As here, βrian.
Avatar Fri. 3/18/16 1:15pm βrian:

UM is scandalizing us, what with everything he's putting on his plinth.
Avatar Fri. 3/18/16 1:18pm Mary Wing:

The plinth is getting heavy with prizes: Porter Wagoner, Sparks, and Alice Cooper as the grand prize.
  Fri. 3/18/16 1:20pm Dean:

Heh, heh, pun: vinyl revolution.

Giving away anything by the Artist Formerly Known as Plinth?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/18/16 1:22pm joe:

Ok this is pretty damn cool,
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/18/16 1:23pm doctorjazz:

This is cool, missed the announcement, middle eastern sound, cool!
Avatar Fri. 3/18/16 1:24pm Lane Gray:

And, it scans to the tune we'd usually hear about now. Am I right, Brian?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/18/16 1:24pm doctorjazz:

Now I see it...great sounding prize...
     Fri. 3/18/16 1:24pm Listener Robert:

So, Parq, why don't they speak English & say "General Attorney", "General Inspector", "Martial Court", & so on? This ain't French!
  Fri. 3/18/16 1:26pm Dean:

Nous sommes tous procureurs générals!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/18/16 1:26pm Brian in UK:

@Lane I am doubling up listening to England playing cricket. Very exciting but most would not appreciate it.
     Fri. 3/18/16 1:27pm Listener Robert:

Anyway, this year I think someobody's too busy to give anywhere close to a real-time read on the $ & % "thermometers" on the front page. It said 62% or 63% late last night, then Nachum brought down about $200k this AM, seems it should add up to more.
Avatar Fri. 3/18/16 1:28pm Lane Gray:

Porter and Norma Jean!

Donald and Melania! (If we're talking coiffures, I mean.)

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/18/16 1:35pm Andrew Waterloo:

Wow another Andrew in Waterloo.
  Fri. 3/18/16 1:35pm Dean:

Yeah, Galway's execution of rubato is rather exaggerated.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/18/16 1:36pm Stanley:

Great, that's me pledged and now off to the pub.
UM - many thanks for such great shows.

  Fri. 3/18/16 1:36pm Andrew:

Yep, another Andrew in Waterloo! Every time your name was mentioned during the marathon, my wife thought it was me.
  Fri. 3/18/16 1:37pm Dean:

Thus, we have multiple Andrew in Waterloos listening in. Andrews in Waterloo?
Avatar Fri. 3/18/16 1:38pm Mary Wing:

Yes, how cool that two Andrews in Waterloo share a love of WFMU.
Avatar Fri. 3/18/16 1:39pm Doug Schulkind:

@Listener Robert
I'm sure there is an army of volunteers at WFMU right now typing pledge cards from Nachum's show this morning in to the database. It takes time to process it all.

     Fri. 3/18/16 1:45pm Listener Robert:

Thanks for the explanation, Doug. So it goes from the phone & Web pledges onto cards, and then Andy B.'s Korean Boy does the math? Or do the Web figures get added separately from the phone room figures?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/18/16 1:45pm doctorjazz:

Nels Cline is great, go for this one! (great Wilco show last month...at least, when they finished playing the new album).
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/18/16 1:47pm Andrew Waterloo:

Nels Cline solo is a bit different from Nels Cline Wilco.

"There's two of them." Now that makes me cranky.
     Fri. 3/18/16 1:48pm Listener Robert:

Or is it something like the way the election returns used to be done from the old machines in NY, where when the polls closed the inspectors did an unofficial tally, and then later there was an official one? BTW, am I bothering people about the mechanics of this? The mechanics of EVERYTHING at WFMU (and many other places) interest me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/18/16 1:49pm Andrew Waterloo:

There's enough experimental music happening in Waterloo to support several Andrews.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/18/16 1:49pm doctorjazz:

Absolutely, he has a role to play in Wilco, doesn't sound like this (but, he still sounds REAL GOOD).
  Fri. 3/18/16 1:49pm Dean:

"...mechanics...interest..." A plural inflection, but a singular noun, like economics. Bravo.
Avatar Fri. 3/18/16 1:51pm Lane Gray:

Brian with the German double S, look at the people who expect the Seldom Scene to sound like the Velvet Underground, with Lou Reid on vox

YAY!!!!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/18/16 1:51pm Andrew Waterloo:

As the joke goes. Please send me a mongoose, and while you're at it send another.
  Fri. 3/18/16 1:51pm Dean:

Er, a plural inflection, hence a verb conjugated plural, even though like "economics" it's treated as a singular. OED says either, albeit less so as plural.

Time to go back to Middle School, brush up on my grammar.
Avatar Fri. 3/18/16 1:54pm Doug Schulkind:

@Listener Robert
All the pledges that come in over the telephone are hand-written on cards. Someone then has to type the info into the database. Nachum's show on the last Friday of the marathon (his last day of marathoning) generates many hundreds of such pledge cards. It takes many hours to get them entered into the system.
     Fri. 3/18/16 1:57pm Listener Robert:

Tnx again, Doug. So can I take it that the Web pledges are totaled automatically?
Avatar Fri. 3/18/16 1:57pm Doug Schulkind:

During their last visit to Pittsburgh, Yo La Tengo dedicated their encore to Give the Drummer Radio!!
Avatar Fri. 3/18/16 1:59pm Doug Schulkind:

@Listener Robert
Yep. Web pledges go right into the system. Unless there is a problem (such as a pledge to one show winning a prize to another show). Then it gets flagged and pulled out for "fixing."
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/18/16 2:01pm joe:

@Robert I can speak to the fact that a lot of JM's pledges tend to come in by phone. I've seen it they keep that group of phone workers on their toes. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/18/16 2:01pm listener james from westwood:

Could it be safely said that that YLT album would not exist without WFMU? I reckon it could.
     Fri. 3/18/16 2:03pm Listener Robert:

Actually I gather from the description that indeed it MUST work something like the old election canvas, with their unofficial & official tallies. There must be an unofficial one to report on the show, and then later there's an official one. With the canvas sheets it was carbon-like copies; I'm guessing you use the same pledge cards but they're collected twice -- once for a sum for anmt on the show, then again to add into the total. And some of the pledge cards must get handled another time, when there's a drawing for a show's prize.

So theoretically you COULD "find money under the couch cushion" if a card gets lost in the shuffle.
  Fri. 3/18/16 2:07pm KWilde:

I just pledged to this show and my receipt said my pledge was credited to Bryce
     Fri. 3/18/16 2:09pm Listener Robert:

I mean, it's not actual $, just an acc'ting of it.

But election returns are another matter with the relatively new machines in NY. When they were instituted (I was an inspector at the time), I'd assumed the printout at the polls was just the UNofficial tally, and that the OFFICIAL tally would be made at the office from the flash memory that was collected separately from the machines. Since then I learned that official tally was based off the printouts made that night at the polls, which is a bit scary.

Joe, "that group of phone workers"? Does the JM stream have its own phone room somewhere?
Avatar Fri. 3/18/16 2:13pm Doug Schulkind:

@Listener Robert
It is the same phone room, but a different crew of phone answerers. Each show has a new or mostly new crew of volunteers in to answer the phones.
     Fri. 3/18/16 2:13pm Listener Robert:

Wait a minute, that can't be, because Nachum gives out the same phone #. So you must mean "that shift of the volunteers".
