I play music that is old and that is new. Some of it is digital while some is analog. It is from many different countries; sometimes it is loud and at other times it is quiet.

good afternoon everyone.

Hello Dave B! Thanks for tuning in! How wat the Idiot? Never watched it myself. Hooray, Jeff G! Glad to have you here!
Avatar    Mon. 11/30/15 5:09pm Mayuko:

Good afternoon, JtotheK, glad to have you on board!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 11/30/15 5:13pm Jason:

Hello Mayuko & everyone

(A little confession: I often find Ms. Hara a bit too cloying. Hideko Takamine, on the other hand... *swoon*)
Avatar Mon. 11/30/15 5:13pm Dave B:

It was really quite good. Based on Fyodor Dostoevsky's novel of the same name.
Avatar    Mon. 11/30/15 5:27pm Mayuko:

Hello Jason! Thank you for tuning in. This might be a bit different from what you feel about her but I have been wondering why she smiles so often even when she's saying things like "Yes, nothing but disappointment" (which could be where that too much sweetness comes from.) She's certainly not presenting independent/rebel type characters, but there's some strange strength in her, kinda like when you are powerless at least you can take that difficulties with a smile.
Avatar    Mon. 11/30/15 5:28pm Mayuko:

I LOVE Dostoevsky's Idiot and yet I haven't watched the film! I guess I should, Dave B!
Avatar Mon. 11/30/15 5:41pm Flash Strap:

Tuning in live for once, but as always, listening to this show is a pleasure
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 11/30/15 5:43pm Jason:

Oh, I agree! Just my own little bias. I think my favourite performance by her is in Late Autumn / 秋日和, maybe because she is older then, and has more gravity, especially as otherwise the film is quite light.
Avatar    Mon. 11/30/15 5:44pm Mayuko:

Evan! How are you? Glad to have you tuning in live!!!
Avatar Mon. 11/30/15 5:46pm Flash Strap:

I am a crazy man I'm afraid, but it's nice to have this show to ease my mind
Avatar    Mon. 11/30/15 5:53pm Mayuko:

Jason, she was also in some Japanese empire propaganda film when she was very young - so certainly not a hardcore type. I guess like you said aging must have given her more depth (and working with Ozu.)
Avatar    Mon. 11/30/15 5:55pm Mayuko:

(Not that I wanna blame her - must have been a hard time to have independent thoughts esp if you're really young)
  Mon. 11/30/15 5:56pm Dave B:

I think her self imposed seclusion after Ozu died only added to her mystique
Avatar Mon. 11/30/15 6:17pm Flash Strap:

i am snifflin' too Mayuko. cold just won't quit
  Mon. 11/30/15 6:20pm Listener142985:

RIP, Setsuoko Hara. The Noriko trilogy is one of the peak achievements in film, and she is the luminous core of all three films. Those who love cinema and have not seen these films should at least see Early Spring. The scene just before she is married when she thanks her father for letting her care for him is so deeply moving. Anyone who can watch it without choking up should have their heart checked; it may have stopped working.
Avatar    Mon. 11/30/15 6:20pm Mayuko:

Oh no, Evan! I was suddenly attacked by this storm of sneezing this past Sat night. My head is full of cotton now. Hope we get well soon!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 11/30/15 6:25pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Hey, gang. I'm cooking some onions, so I'm dealing with some eye and nose problems. Happily, it's just temporary and I'll eventually be eating the concoction.
Avatar    Mon. 11/30/15 6:26pm Mayuko:

Thank you for checking in, Listener142985! I agree with you but I have to say Haruko Sugimura was pretty great too in those films, she's so funny. and played SUPER WELL those typical Japanese lady from those days - everyone in Japan must have an annoying relative like her - I know I do! haha.
Avatar Mon. 11/30/15 6:28pm Doug Schulkind:

Happy greetings, to all mayukophiles!
Avatar    Mon. 11/30/15 6:28pm Mayuko:

Welcome on board, Ken, thanks for tuning in! I want whatever you're cooking to be delivered here! You're making me hungry.
  Mon. 11/30/15 6:28pm Dave B:

To me, it seemed (at least in film) that perhaps she was torn between tradition and "modernity" (for lack of a better term). And this also plays on that sensibility of sentimentality...
Avatar    Mon. 11/30/15 6:29pm Mayuko:

Good evening, Doug!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 11/30/15 6:31pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I can deliver to you the recipe I'm trying. Scientifically designed meatballs. www.fortune.com...
  Mon. 11/30/15 6:38pm Dave B:

Haruko Sugimura's character wouldn't be classified as "obatarian" would it?
Avatar    Mon. 11/30/15 6:39pm Mayuko:

I think so, Dave B, probably that's why I feel familiar with her, that she also is living the same reality in a not too different way as my grandmothers did. That she's not a hero, but simply a human. But I'm not sure exactly what these mean to me yet.
Avatar    Mon. 11/30/15 6:41pm Mayuko:

Ken, could you compress them meatballs and email em to me? The recipe looks fantastic! This is torturing!
  Mon. 11/30/15 6:42pm Dave B:

To simply be human is more nobel than being a hero.
  Mon. 11/30/15 6:43pm Listener142985:

She is a great actress, and the embodiment of the pushy relative. But everyone in those films, not just the actors but the technical/creative crew, were working at such a high level because they loved and respected Ozu so much. Roger Ebert said this, and I think it's well-said: 'It is impossible to select Ozu's best film because his work is so much of a piece, and almost always to the same high standard.' Any chance of tracking down the drinking song from the bar scene in Tokyo Story? Love that one.
Avatar    Mon. 11/30/15 6:50pm Mayuko:

Not the party scene in Atami where street musicians came and performed? I think I could find it out if I do a bit of research.
Avatar    Mon. 11/30/15 6:54pm Mayuko:

This is the last song for my show tonight - thank you all for listening!
  Mon. 11/30/15 6:55pm Dave B:

And a great show it was!
Avatar Mon. 11/30/15 6:56pm Flash Strap:

hate to have it end! great show Mayuko
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 11/30/15 6:58pm Ken From Hyde Park:

If these meatballs turn out well enough, I'll let you know. I'll zap you some when technology catches up. This is by far the most complicated dish I've ever prepared. Learning by doing!
Avatar    Mon. 11/30/15 7:02pm Mayuko:

That would be great, Ken! Maybe try send me the turkey meatball 3D printing file and I'll get em printed out somehow! Thanks again all! Hope to see you all again next week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 12/3/15 9:30pm Dave in Vermont:

I found your show because I saw you as a listener to FlashStrap's show. So glad. Ozu cant, as well.

Thank you for checking in, Dave in Vermont! Always a delight to have a first time listener!
Avatar    Sun. 12/6/15 3:41pm fred:

Thanks again, Mayuko, and get well. I hate colds, it takes a lot of sleep and water to get rid of these, and neither are plentiful with my favored lifestyle.
Your show got me thinking about my grandmothers, very different women. One had 8 kids in a rural setting, the other had two from different fathers and was involved in the "resistance". I never really knew either, they died before I knew what to ask. Not their fault, it took me so long to figure it out
Avatar    Mon. 12/7/15 10:18am Mayuko:

wow. I wonder if your grandmother got to meet Samuel Beckett in the resistance. I like this feeling that we all are at the tip of the flows of history. Glad you shared this story of your grandmothers with me!
Avatar    Mon. 12/14/15 1:44pm fred:

I don't think my grandmother would have met Beckett: she was in the communist workers movement, another world
