  Mon. 10/19/15 3:20pm Barrie_:

This ELO sounds totally hammered. Which is what it should be, because it's AWESOME.

I Want More (Clams)
  Mon. 10/19/15 3:24pm Mark:

That was always the theory rw. Nobody knows for sure.
  Mon. 10/19/15 3:25pm P-90:

rw: The story goes that it's a nonsense syllable :"groose!" but after everybody and his sister thought it was "Bruce", the band changed it and started singing it that way in performances. If you believe Jeff Lynne.
  Mon. 10/19/15 3:29pm Dean:

But "groose" is not nonsense. It means "to shiver," as in a fit.
  Mon. 10/19/15 3:30pm Mark:

Doesn't really make sense in the context of the song, though, does it, Dean? (Not to over-analyze an ELO song, which I think I just did!)
  Mon. 10/19/15 3:32pm Dean:

I'm with you Mark, in over-analysis-land, that is. First verse:

You got me runnin' goin' out of my mind,
You got me thinkin' that I'm wastin' my time.
Don't bring me down, no no no no no,
I'll tell you once more before I get off the floor
Don't bring me down.

Sounds like a fit to me!
  Mon. 10/19/15 3:33pm P-90:

Actually, per Lynne, it's an Australianism derived from "gross", as in "unpleasant and undesirable." Apparently like being "let down," by Bruce or whomever...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 10/19/15 3:34pm Cecile:

Jeff Lynne, call in and tell us the rest of the story
  Mon. 10/19/15 3:35pm Mark:

We know you're listening, Jeff, so don't even...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 10/19/15 3:35pm Webhamster Henry:

If you ARE listening, Jeff, how about a pledge?
  Mon. 10/19/15 3:36pm Dean:

I'm just grateful ELO didn't cover Mairzy Doats.
  Mon. 10/19/15 3:36pm Nervy:

I thought it was "truce." Like, call a truce and don't hassle me any longer.
  Mon. 10/19/15 3:36pm Mark:

Yeah Jeff, nothing unreasonable, just like a million dollars.
Avatar    Mon. 10/19/15 3:37pm V Priceless:

Leland Palmer owns Mairzy Doats, Dean.
  Mon. 10/19/15 3:37pm Mark:

$1 million would almost reach Scott's goal for this week. Make him a hero!
  Mon. 10/19/15 3:38pm Dean:

Then Leland Palmer should pledge, too.
Avatar Mon. 10/19/15 3:38pm drewo:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 10/19/15 4:03pm Scott Williams:

@Matt, Residents was '86
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 10/19/15 4:03pm Matt from Springfield:

Ah: "The avant-garde band The Residents recorded the song for their 1986 album Stars & Hank Forever: The American Composers Series, replacing its original backing music with the bassline of Michael Jackson's Billie Jean. This was more than likely a reference to Williams' wife, who was named Billie Jean." Interesting connex, there!

High school history class, back in the old days, we sat in the back of class and abruptly, rudely, and mischievously placed The Osmonds' "One Bad Apple" 45rpm on the classroom turntable set to 33rpm midway through the teacher's lecture. He kinda got a kick out of it.
  Mon. 10/19/15 4:46pm Dean:

We also played an oscillator in the same class at the threshold of audibility. That perturbed the teacher. We were, and to some extent remain, jerky little shits.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 10/19/15 5:07pm common:

oh yea!
Avatar    Mon. 10/19/15 5:07pm Chris from DC:

That would have been an interesting segue to "Jump".
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 10/19/15 5:07pm Scott Williams:

Thanks Emile! YES, Matt - PERFECT!
Avatar    Mon. 10/19/15 5:07pm Rich in Washington:

even though I despise Van Halen on principle, there's something about this song that I am sentimental about. I am not sure why. Maybe some long-forgotten teenage memory.
  Mon. 10/19/15 5:07pm rw:

Scott, this segue is making me mad. I'd like my clams back please.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 10/19/15 5:08pm Scott Williams:

MORE CLAMS! I seem to have stalled at the 73% mark - can we get my pledge widget up to 85% by show's end today, folks?
  Mon. 10/19/15 5:08pm Ted:

  Mon. 10/19/15 5:08pm rw:

Avatar    Mon. 10/19/15 5:12pm Chris from DC:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 10/19/15 5:15pm Matt from Springfield:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 10/19/15 5:15pm common:

right joe b! a strange tune indeed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 10/19/15 5:15pm Carmichael:

That's right, Joe. It was Sammy Maudlin. They were plugging their movie Chariots of Eggs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 10/19/15 5:16pm Scott Williams:

excellent factoid, Joe B, thanks! love the way your brain works
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 10/19/15 5:17pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

For a Hard Rawk outfit (of mighty skill & power) - VH had/(s) good melody & Pop sense. Usually, they succombed to frat-glam image dumbness for too long tho'. HoHum.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 10/19/15 5:19pm Cecile:

I pretty much liked all their eras except for the Hagar-Cherone years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 10/19/15 5:20pm Ike:

WFMU's slot says "insert clams here." So, DO IT people! INSERT YOUR CLAMS!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 10/19/15 5:21pm Scott Williams:

Heyyy, thank you Matt from Springfield! Matt threw us some clams, y'all! we're at 81% of full clammage, but we can do better!

  Mon. 10/19/15 5:35pm steve:

Avatar    Mon. 10/19/15 5:38pm Rich in Washington:

Avatar    Mon. 10/19/15 5:40pm Rich in Washington:

It's NOT?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 10/19/15 5:40pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Hey, efd will probably want to play this on his show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 10/19/15 5:40pm Scott Williams:

that was a crappy Paul Mauriat project called "Les Satelites" - the song was "Dum Dum". I played it off center, of course. FOR CLAMS!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 10/19/15 5:41pm Carmichael:

Nice maneuver, Scott!
  Mon. 10/19/15 5:41pm ?:

methinks these guys have heard Joe Meek
Avatar    Mon. 10/19/15 5:42pm Rich in Washington:

Playing 45s off-center was my favorite way to play them as a kid.
Or playing a 12" record with a 7 or 10 inch record layed on top to act as a locked groove when the needle came to the edge of it.
I think my brother and I destroyed lots of our parent's records that way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 10/19/15 5:42pm Matt from Springfield:

Off center, just like us!
Also diggin' this PLU/Ergo project! Probably have heard this before on another show, but this arrangement rocks!
  Mon. 10/19/15 5:43pm steve:

nice... The off centeredness is what made it truly great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 10/19/15 5:46pm Scott Williams:

check out the totally killer, and fantastic-sounding, Shannon & The Clams live set on Todd O-Todd's show this past weekend!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 10/19/15 5:46pm Matt from Springfield:

What a co-inkidink, Shannon...and the CLAMS!
Mon. 10/19/15 5:55pm efd in transit:

Dammit, I'm on the train and didn't get my "Nick Gilder Is Being Played On The Radio" alert in time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 10/19/15 5:55pm Matt from Springfield:

Rosie & the Original 45s! Nice wall o' noise effect, like a radio transmission from beyond!
Avatar Mon. 10/19/15 5:56pm TDK60:

Ah, the crackling hiss.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 10/19/15 5:57pm Scott Williams:

HI EVAN!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 10/19/15 5:58pm Matt from Springfield:

"Rosalie "Rosie" Méndez Hamlin was born in Klamath Falls, Oregon, on July 21, 1945, to a Mexican mother and an Anglo-American father. She spent part of her childhood between Anchorage, Alaska and California, before her family moved to National City, California. She started singing with a band at thirteen. She wrote the lyrics for "Angel Baby" as a poem for "my very first boyfriend" when she was 14 years old, still attending Mission Bay High School in San Diego, California."
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 10/19/15 5:58pm Scott Williams:

Thanks everybody! See you next week
