This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

This show is dedicated to Gary, and I bet he can think of 3 reasons why!
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 6:26pm Gary:

Oh, man! I have a longstanding date with friends so I can only hang out briefly and then listen while transiting over to their house via phone ... :(

But that's what archives are for!
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 6:41pm Flash Strap:

The archives will always be there for you my friend! Life waits for no show to end before it begins, and definitely not on a thursday night
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 6:46pm Gary:

The many awesome Holger Czukay gems I'll no doubt be hearing for the first time granted, what I'm most looking forward to from this show is *how to properly pronounce his name*.
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 6:54pm Flash Strap:

you might not get that here, but I did some research, and it's more like Schu-kai than what I've always said, some sort of a slippery Tschoo-kaye
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 6:58pm Gary:

HOLzhur, holZHUR, HOLgrrr or holGUHR?
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 7:00pm Flash Strap:

Holgrr
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 7:01pm ndbob:

evening Evan and everyone!
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 7:04pm Flash Strap:

Evening, Bob!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/8/15 7:06pm Ike:

Hey hey hi hi ho ho!
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 7:06pm Flash Strap:

sorry Gary, that wasn't all that helpful... I think it's sort of HOHL-Gr
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 7:06pm Flash Strap:

Hi Ike !
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 7:08pm Doug Schulkind:

Top o' the evening, Explorers!

Evening, Evan!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/8/15 7:08pm dave:

Hey everyone! Holgrrr is a rather common name in these parts.
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 7:10pm Gary:

HOLgrr SHOOkai ... aha!
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 7:10pm hyde:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/8/15 7:15pm dave:

Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 7:17pm Gary:

Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 7:19pm Flash Strap:

Wow, Czukay means "search"! thanks for the hot top Dave
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 7:19pm Flash Strap:

hate to see you go Gary! see you in the frozen dimension off the archives!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/8/15 7:20pm dave:

Thanks for the great show, Evan!
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 7:25pm Flash Strap:

Got a pretty good tiki drink goin right now: 3 kinds of rum, coco lopez, drambuie, grand marnier, lime. don't have a name for it though.
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 7:26pm Flash Strap:

Gary played this the other night. I can never hear it enough, really. Stone giant genius, this one
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/8/15 7:27pm dave:

You can call your drink Cool in the Pool.
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 7:28pm Flash Strap:

well, there you go. that is it.
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 7:29pm hyde:

@Flash hmmm, that sounds good. I just bought Jeff Berry's Potions of the Carribean and now I realize I need all sorts of stuff that I don't have to make anything in there, like drambuie.
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 7:29pm Flash Strap:

there's an amazing video for this track, too: www.youtube.com...

such mad scientist tomfoolery
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 7:30pm Flash Strap:

I need that one, Hyde. I have Intoxica and Grog Log. Berry does great books
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 7:31pm Flash Strap:

But yeah, the first thing you find out is that you can't make anything right with the stiff you have, and that you can never get all the stuff you need
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/8/15 7:31pm Sullivan Ballou:

well, that was horribly creepy. I feel violated.
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 7:32pm hyde:

this one is really good, I think. I haven't read the text, but it looks like a real history. Has great photos + ephemera, too.
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 7:32pm Flash Strap:

Highly recommend Intoxica, you can probably skip Grog Log
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 7:34pm Flash Strap:

I've seen it, and I really want it. I looks great.

Hi Sullivan!
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 7:34pm hyde:

the rum thing in it is absurd. One drink calls for haitian rum, another for Puerto Rican, another for some place else. A couple drinks call for some sort of Demerara 151 proof rum that near as I can tell is impossible to find anywhere. But the couple drinks I could make have been really good, so I guess I'll keep adding stuff to the cabinet.
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 7:37pm Flash Strap:

i know, it's a torment. I just get the 3 or 4 rums I like anyway and make my drinks with them regardless. It's sacrilege, but what can I do? Plus I like Kraken a lot for some reason, which would not be recommended for anything. But I like it anyway dammit!
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 7:39pm Flash Strap:

This part is so NUTS
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 7:44pm Flash Strap:

love that part a little ways back that was like:

I-I-I-I FEEL BEAUTIFUL NOOOOW
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/8/15 7:51pm Parq:

Know relatively little about Can, but have always dug what I've heard (or saw, as in that vid on Ken's premium). Really enjoyed this show, both the music and Flash's enthusiasm.
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 7:57pm Flash Strap:

Hi Parq, glad you're enjoying!
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 7:57pm ndbob:

excellent show Evan! catch the rest on the archive
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 8:01pm Flash Strap:

thanks bob! bye bud
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 8:06pm Flash Strap:

This track is so huuuuuuge, wide open, bright and beautiful
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 8:08pm Flash Strap:

from an interview: My first childhood experience was of church music. After the war we had to escape from the east and the only location you could come into contact with music was the church. That was very interesting for me. And this still shines through on my work today. Michael Karoli – the guitar player with Can –always used to say to me, ‘It doesn’t matter what you play, Holger – it could be the biggest bunch of garbage, but it always ends up sounding like church music’.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/8/15 8:08pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Hullo over here !
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 8:09pm Flash Strap:

Hullo Rabbit!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/8/15 8:09pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...he's like people from the old American South that way...
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 8:09pm Flash Strap:

I had a similar thought. For some people, Gospel music is in everything
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 8:13pm Flash Strap:

Supposedly this piece actually goes back to '76
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/8/15 8:13pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...wull, might be different Church music...
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 8:14pm Flash Strap:

I would imagine

for more later reading, the Fact magazine interview: www.factmag.com...
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 8:23pm Flash Strap:

One of your musical trademarks is the french horn. When did you first learn to play that?

“That’s very simple. I went into a shop and saw a french horn. I asked how much it was and they said, ‘Holger, you don’t need to buy anything in our shop. We give it to you as a present.’ [laughs] I went immediately to the studio where we were recording with Jah Wobble and started playing…and it was one of the best things I’ve ever played.”

You’d never played one before?

“No, never.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/8/15 8:35pm coelacanth:

hola Flash and strapping young explorers
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 8:40pm Flash Strap:

Good evening, C.!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/8/15 8:42pm Ike:

Lovely! But is it just me or is this a little bit over-driven in spots? Maybe it's my stereo?
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 8:42pm Flash Strap:

how are you this fine night?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 10/8/15 8:42pm melinda:

This is lovely and haunting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/8/15 8:43pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I always heard French Horn was hard !
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 8:43pm Flash Strap:

Looks ok on my end Ike, not sure what it is. could be a particular effect?
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 8:45pm hyde:

loved that cluster tune
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 8:48pm Flash Strap:

yeah, so good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/8/15 8:48pm coelacanth:

great now! cookin' up some broccoli rabe i'm Psyched! and this tune ended up on a sound collage tape i made sometime in the 80s (probably from wfmu) and now,Thank you- i've identified it!
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 8:51pm Flash Strap:

Nice! Love fillin' those blanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/8/15 8:54pm coelacanth:

yes i like giving proper credit; but as i'm creating it it happens too fast to keep up.
how are you?
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 8:55pm Flash Strap:

Thanks to beloved listeners Morgan and Lynne for their generous donations! And to Comrade Gary! Let's keep this good ship afloat. Crunch time is upon us
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/8/15 8:57pm Ike:

Never mind, it was very likely an issue on my end. Great show!
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 8:57pm listener james from westwood:

Always a fun trip, Evan; thanks!
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 8:59pm Flash Strap:

Don't feel like you gotta go, James! Lots more to come!
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 9:01pm Flash Strap:

U-She really chanteusing like Nico here
  Thu. 10/8/15 9:03pm greysquad:

great show!
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 9:04pm Flash Strap:

I erred before; it wasn't U-She on Rhythms of a Secret Life, it was Romie Singh. Not that we really heard that one
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 9:05pm Flash Strap:

Thanks Greysquad
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 9:06pm Flash Strap:

@C: I'm hangin' in there. How are you, old fish?
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 9:07pm hambone:

i really thought i was hearing nico too. had to look up the album and make sure.
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 9:08pm northguineahills:

I had no idea Phew was that old!
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 9:08pm Flash Strap:

She was in Aunt Sally before that even!
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 9:09pm Flash Strap:

Same thing happened to me, Hambone, when I first heard it
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 9:09pm Flash Strap:

Also, welcome brothers Hambone and NGH!
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 9:10pm northguineahills:

Oh, I forgot she was in Aunt Sally!
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 9:13pm Doug Schulkind:

What a magnificent Exploration, Flash Strap. And so Roomy, too!
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 9:14pm Flash Strap:

ya flatta me Douglass
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 9:15pm Flash Strap:

God this track is freaky
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 9:15pm Doug Schulkind:

Just spaeking the trüth.
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 9:18pm Flash Strap:

Praech on Brøther
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 9:19pm Flash Strap:

I think we got Sheldon here doin' these Duck Rock style vocals
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/8/15 9:23pm coelacanth:

i've never heard cluster i didn't like; and only one side of one album by Eno that i don't like much.
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 9:33pm northguineahills:

Hey, I like some techno (though most is crap), hell, I even like some classic house.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/8/15 9:35pm coelacanth:

there're very few "genres" of music that i don't like at least 2% of!

("smooth jazz" comes to mind)
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 9:36pm Flash Strap:

That is your pleasure, you know? I don't know why, as door after musical door has opened to me, the door to techno remains so uninviting. Partly, I do not like either glitches or clicks, but there is more to it than that I'm sure
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 9:37pm Flash Strap:

The line between smooth jazz and 70's fusion can get pretty blurry, but there is a point well past that where I'm in just total moral repudiation, and it is most of the stuff that gets played on smooth jazz stations. FUCK THAT NOISE
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 9:38pm Flash Strap:

i hate that it makes people happy, too, which makes me feel terrible
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/8/15 9:38pm coelacanth:

"uninviting"...i could see that. however brilliant it may be (& i think a tiny bit of it is brilliant) it is still cold, generally. (like autotuned vocals)
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 9:40pm Flash Strap:

huh, yeah, I can't even get into those African autotuned vocals. But I love electronic music
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 9:40pm northguineahills:

I thought I hated smooth jazz until I heard a Stanley Clarke tune I actually liked.
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 9:42pm hyde:

everyone needs some music to hate
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/8/15 9:43pm coelacanth:

@9:38 laugh out loud!

yes the lines can be blurry. i like some mellow jazz (& mellow jazz fusion) but at some point it became profit-motivated and devoid of the basic elements of true jazz.
mellow jazz does not smooth jazz make.
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 9:46pm Flash Strap:

Exactly C: it is the profit-driven aspect. Market mediocrity. Giving the people what they "want." I hate this.

@NGH: I had an ironic appreciation of Dave Camp's smash smooth jazz LP "Torrid Rain" that got dangerously real. It was so perfectly THAT kind of music. Smooth jazz for a basketball montage in a 90's flick
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/8/15 9:46pm coelacanth:

i don't know what Stanley Clarke is up to these days, but i like what i've heard of his '70s playing. i wouldn't call that "smooth jazz".
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 9:47pm Flash Strap:

I don't think i'm familiar with any of Clarke's music in particular. I can't weigh in!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/8/15 9:47pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

It aint' whatcher do - iz the way that ya does it.
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 9:48pm Flash Strap:

well there ya haz it, the wizdom of the wabbit
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 9:48pm northguineahills:

Stanley Clarke's 70s output I would describe as 70s smooth fusion jazz, by the 80s, it was pure smooth, He, did, however, do an amazing album in the 70s, that believe Herbie was on, unless my brain has totally atrophied.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/8/15 9:49pm dave:

This is some piece.
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 9:49pm Flash Strap:

oh i know! that sample is outrageous! and the drums!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/8/15 9:51pm coelacanth:

Clarke's playing with Chick Corea stands out,in my opinion. his work with George Duke,well- no thank you!
...i'd like to hear him with Hancock...but it may just not be my cuppa!
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 9:52pm hyde:

i used to like "Journey To Love" by Stanley Clarke when i was a teen. Then again, i liked Oregon too...
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 9:52pm Flash Strap:

that amazing album cover i was trying to describe: cdn.discogs.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/8/15 9:53pm coelacanth:

nice!
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 9:53pm Flash Strap:

here we go, final track! enjoy it while it lasts!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/8/15 9:54pm coelacanth:

i liked Oregon for a minute too! (but i also liked Boston!)
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 9:54pm hyde:

heh, Journey to Love def. had George Duke on it. I haven't thought about that record for like 35 years.
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 9:55pm Flash Strap:

I've never listened to it. Is the consensus here that it's ok, but embarrassing?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/8/15 9:56pm coelacanth:

Evan i shan't forsake you- though i'll be dividing my modest donation between 3 shows. i cannot clear it 'till the 4th or even 5th week of october.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/8/15 9:58pm coelacanth:

do you mean this? "persian love"?
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 9:58pm Flash Strap:

all in your time, C. I know I haven't got a dime to squeeze out of these dry pockets, myself, so I appreciate those that do and understand them what don't. But I thank you, truly.
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 9:59pm Flash Strap:

oh no, I meant Journey to Love. I love Persian Love without shame!
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 10:00pm hyde:

i'm sure it's terrible. i liked it then, but i liked some awful music in the 70's that when i hear it now, i am just horrified.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/8/15 10:01pm coelacanth:

good cause i'm enjoying it!

...i don't know if i've heard Journey to Love. i just have never heard any George Duke that i thought was above soulless.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/8/15 10:03pm coelacanth:

ha- funny hyde! me too. i've still got all those albums wasting space. whatever...it was a journey, right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/8/15 10:04pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Thx for another Exploration!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/8/15 10:04pm coelacanth:

Thank you Evan. i'll come back for what i missed.

ciao explorers.
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 10:05pm Flash Strap:

I have Duke's Faces in Reflection, and found it very disappointing
Avatar Thu. 10/8/15 10:06pm Flash Strap:

Thank you, C, and Rabbit!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 10/9/15 9:24am Brian in UK:

In lieu of nothing Flash, I sent a friend of mine a mixCD yesterday and called it 'On The Way To The Peak Of Norman'. Look forward to picking up your show later, it tends to clash with my time with Morpheus.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sat. 10/10/15 11:25am Brian in UK:
