Wait - are you telling us there's pillars that are hollow, and filled with candy? I am SO tearing them down!!

Hey Matt ! - all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 10/5/15 12:25am Ken From Hyde Park:

See, that's why we can't have nice things. People always tearing them down.

Hey there, Christina! It's Steve-O. Loved your last show, and I'm glad to see you back while Therese is out. =)

night, Christina!
Avatar Mon. 10/5/15 12:28am BadGuyZero:

i hope those pillars are filled with Sour Patch Kids.

Et Ken, Steve-O, Jake, BGZ, cheri - ALL!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 10/5/15 12:28am Matt from Springfield:

Et "devoid" - I didn't forget! :)
Avatar Mon. 10/5/15 12:30am JakeGould:

That pillars/candy thing sounds like a dream.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 10/5/15 12:30am Matt from Springfield:

@BGZ: You and those SPKs - but perhaps one pillar is stuffed more with sour candies, and another focused on sweet ones. Now, should we tear them down like "tearing" paper, or knock through with a stick, like a piñata?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 10/5/15 12:31am Matt from Springfield:

@Jake: In all likelihood...that sounds like the likeliest answer for the title.
  Mon. 10/5/15 12:32am cheri:

bgz, I think they are filled peanut butter m& ms instead!
Avatar Mon. 10/5/15 12:32am JakeGould:

I thought this song was “Hippo Lady in a Honda” so it would have been from a Richard Scarry book.
Avatar Mon. 10/5/15 12:32am BadGuyZero:

@Matt: Maybe the pillars are edible.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 10/5/15 12:33am Matt from Springfield:

CHOCO pillar shells! Now we're talkin'.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 10/5/15 12:33am Christina:

Hey Christina, sounding good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 10/5/15 12:35am Matt from Springfield:

well we're here to please! see you soon,
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 10/5/15 12:36am Matt from Springfield:

@Jake: That too! (It's only gonna get worse as technology evolves, jobs become scarce and education expands).
Avatar Mon. 10/5/15 12:39am JakeGould:

Folks, I tried to repair this old cassette player I bought in 1995 for like $5 but the belts are rotted and I am not motivated to fix it. So with all these new cassette releases… Who sells new cassette players? I want one.
Avatar Mon. 10/5/15 12:41am JakeGould:

Is “Night Owl” codename for booze?
Avatar Mon. 10/5/15 12:42am mariano:

Man, nothing like Wilson Pickett's screech!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 10/5/15 12:42am Matt from Springfield:

@Jake: Not sure myself - Clay P. is the station expert on cassette/microcassette players/tapes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 10/5/15 12:47am Matt from Springfield:

I think it's your headphone volume - mic levels are fine.
Avatar Mon. 10/5/15 12:48am JakeGould:

@Matt: Clay uses micro-cassettes.
Avatar Mon. 10/5/15 12:50am BadGuyZero:

@JakeGould: The only new cassette players that I've seen are ones that connect to a computer via USB so that people can digitally preserve the content of their old audio cassettes.
Avatar Mon. 10/5/15 12:50am coelacanth:

hi Christina and others
Avatar Mon. 10/5/15 12:52am JakeGould:

@BadGuyZero: Yeah, I’ve seen those and have heard mixed things about that. I don’t need a thing with A/D conversion. Just a cassette player. Might need to find some old stereo shop.
Avatar Mon. 10/5/15 12:53am JakeGould:

In the South I hear they mock you if you call Pecans “Pea cans.” They’ll say, “A pea can is what you kick down the street!”
Avatar Mon. 10/5/15 12:56am mariano:

I'm from New Orleans, and it has to be p'CAHN. Same thing with praline, which down there is prah-LEEN. Once ordering food from a place in Brooklyn, I kept saying pecan pie the Southern way, and the woman had no idea what I was saying till I described it. Oh, PEA-can pie! she said. She told me she thought I was ordering something Chinese!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 10/5/15 12:57am Matt from Springfield:

Catalogue of "poultry-related songs"?? Go on....
Avatar Mon. 10/5/15 12:58am JakeGould:

@mariano: Exactly!
Avatar Mon. 10/5/15 1:00am BadGuyZero:

Is owl foul?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 10/5/15 1:00am Matt from Springfield:

Chinese #45: "Pe Con Pi Pan"
Not to be confused with the Pea-can pie, stuffing a whole unopened tin can in a pie crust, like the 3 Stooges.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 10/5/15 1:01am Matt from Springfield:

There's an interesting dialect map of "pecan" throughout the U.S. Wisconsin has a totally different one - I asked a co-worker from WI how they say that, and they say "PEA-kon", rhymes with "Mekon".
Avatar Mon. 10/5/15 1:02am JakeGould:

“Poultry (/ˌpoʊltriː/) are domesticated birds kept by humans for the eggs they produce, their meat, their feathers, or sometimes as pets.” en.wikipedia.org...
  Mon. 10/5/15 1:03am rw:

Pretty sure owls ain't poultry.
Avatar Mon. 10/5/15 1:03am mariano:

@Jake: Hah! That's interesting about the pecan map. I don't even have a Southern accent, but certain things are just said certain ways, end of story: pecan, praline, and of course crawfish.
Avatar Mon. 10/5/15 1:03am BadGuyZero:

@Matt: That's how it's pronounced by most people in Texas. My relatives from Ohio pronounce it "pea can."
Avatar Mon. 10/5/15 1:04am BadGuyZero:

Harry Potter poultry.
Avatar Mon. 10/5/15 1:04am JakeGould:

Domesticate an owl and then get back to me on that.
Avatar Mon. 10/5/15 1:05am mariano:

Christina: I'm sure you'll love New Orleans! It's a very fun place, and this time of year it's not too hot.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 10/5/15 1:06am Matt from Springfield:

@Christina: It NEVER strays far from food, around here! ;)
@BGZ: I only say for "pea can pie", otherwise just "pih'con", like mariano's way but less twang.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 10/5/15 1:08am Matt from Springfield:

@mariano: I loved it! I went last May to visit my cousin and see Jazz Fest. I'd better go back in case he decides to move away someday!
Avatar Mon. 10/5/15 1:08am JakeGould:

Eat a penguin egg omelet and then get back to me on that as well.
Avatar Mon. 10/5/15 1:08am coelacanth:

grits ain't groceries, owls ain't poultry, and mona lisa was a man.
...that's all i know.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 10/5/15 1:10am Matt from Springfield:

@coela: I don't know any of that, but I like the sound of it all! :)
Avatar Mon. 10/5/15 1:10am mariano:

@Matt: Glad you had a good time! I'm due for a visit this year, it's been a while. My mom lives in Shreveport now (boring), so that's where I've been going lately. Well, it's unfair to compare S'port to NOLA. It's got some great food and a pretty good music scene. It is the South after all!
Avatar Mon. 10/5/15 1:11am mariano:

And after all, the Residents are from Shreveport originally. And Leadbelly. And boogie woogie started there. That has to count for something.
Avatar Mon. 10/5/15 1:17am JakeGould:

@mariano: Wait… All of “The Residents?” They are the great unknown band made up of many.
Avatar Mon. 10/5/15 1:18am mariano:

Oh wow, Sweet Sweet Satan would go well on a comp with Lucifer Rise by Imaginary Icons, a band Liz B played a while back. @Jake: apparently they all went to high school together in Shreveport in the 60s then moved to California: en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar Mon. 10/5/15 1:22am JakeGould:

@mariano: I don’t know about the provenance of that origin story. But hey, who knows.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 10/5/15 1:23am Matt from Springfield:

@Jake: Found what I was looking for, re: penguin egg omelet.
Dark Night of the Soul French episode:
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 10/5/15 1:24am Matt from Springfield:

Matt from Springfield:
Bonjour KP, Roi Pingouin!

Is that like a Penguin et fromage, Matt?

Matt from Springfield:
@KP: I guess that would be a Croque-Pingouin sandwich--researchers in the French Southern and Antarctic Islands would probably eat those.

Croque Pingouin Madame or Monsieur?

Matt from Springfield:
@KP: Depends if they find a penguin egg...
  Mon. 10/5/15 1:24am rw:

I knew a guy in high school who claimed one of his relatives was a member of the Residents but I never really believed him.
Avatar Mon. 10/5/15 1:25am JakeGould:

@BadGuyZero: So it seems that one of the most consistent producers of cassette recorders/players is CALIFONE. The school tape makers. All of them are mono. But some of them are really cheap online and they’re made so kids can deal with them so they are solid.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 10/5/15 1:25am Matt from Springfield:

Wooooooooo! Hardcore Dixieland gospel brass!!!

@rw: Was he from Shreveport?
Avatar Mon. 10/5/15 1:26am JakeGould:

@rw: Did that guy in High School also steal a Stormtrooper helmet off of the set of “Star Wars” because he was an extra in the Cantina scene?
Avatar Mon. 10/5/15 1:27am mariano:

@Jake: To be honest I don't know either, but apparently Homer Flynn, the public face of Cryptic Corporation, is from Shreveport, and he's long been rumored to be a member, but, with those guys, like you said, who knows?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 10/5/15 1:28am Matt from Springfield:

BROTHER Dave Bartholomew!!! A very Nyoo Awlinsian tide's comin' in!

Caribbean influence on this one.
Avatar Mon. 10/5/15 1:29am coelacanth:

it's pretty easy to find a reasonably priced cassette deck on ebay,in decent shape; and-around here at least, folks who fix 'em.
  Mon. 10/5/15 1:29am rw:

From Southern California not Shreveport. And I always thought that dude in the Cantina scene looked familiar...
Avatar Mon. 10/5/15 1:30am KP:

Longhair music
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 10/5/15 1:32am Matt from Springfield:

Tipitina, no less! :)
Avatar Mon. 10/5/15 1:32am mariano:

I forget which New Orleanian said it, but s/he said the trick is to look at New Orleans as a high-functioning Caribbean city instead of a dysfunctional American one. It's great to hear all this stuff, Professor Longhair, etc. One thing about NO is that people down there are really into the NO music, so you hear it everywhere, it's a real badge of pride.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 10/5/15 1:35am Matt from Springfield:

@mariano: That's a good way of putting it.
Lots of cross-influence over the years too w/ the west Caribbean. I heard that in the 50s and 60s you could listen to AM radio from Jamaica in NOLA, and hear the developing ska and reggae styles. Then of course there's all the gospel and rock we sent down there before that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 10/5/15 1:37am Ken From Hyde Park:

This is like Doctor Romo's Cajun Medicine Show on WVKR 91.3 at Vassar College near me. It's on Thursday mornings 9AM to noon.
Avatar Mon. 10/5/15 1:38am mariano:

@Matt: that's true, and they could also pick up NOLA radio in Jamaica, and the soul and 50s rock from NOLA had a huge influence on early ska and rocksteady. There's great radio down there too: WWOZ, WTUL from Tulane.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 10/5/15 1:40am Christina:

Thanks so much for listening guys! Super excited for NOLA later this month! Also, I can't say any more on air because SHHHHHH but WFMU is fundraising all this month. Shirts and swag abound for the faithful!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 10/5/15 1:42am Matt from Springfield:

@Ken HP: Cajun medicine up in Vassar? Wonderful, who knew!
@mariano: WWOZ is a spiritual brother of this station - we hosted their streaming after Katrina, and I think FMU just cross-sponsored something with them. I have their app on my iPhone.
  Mon. 10/5/15 1:43am ScottC:

toine my back
Avatar Mon. 10/5/15 1:43am JakeGould:

WFMU wants money? What kind of clip joint is this? Oh yeah… That kind!
Avatar Mon. 10/5/15 1:44am BadGuyZero:

The silent fundraiser gives WFMU listeners a chance to score some of the DJ premiums and other swag they may have missed during the spring fundraising marathon. If you can spare a few bucks [or more] please consider making a pledge. BONUS: your donations are tax deductible.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 10/5/15 1:45am Christina:

Won't somebody think of the poultry?!
Avatar Mon. 10/5/15 1:46am mariano:

@Matt: Absolutely, I remember that, it was a great thing FMU did.
Avatar Mon. 10/5/15 1:50am BadGuyZero:

@Matt: WFMU and WWOZ are co-broadcasting from the Ponderosa Stomp. WWOZ had a benefit show or two to help out FMU after that jerk Hurricane Sandy messed things up at the station.
Avatar Mon. 10/5/15 1:52am JakeGould:

@Christina: What does poultry mean to you? Sure as hell ain’t no penguin or owl poultry.
Avatar Mon. 10/5/15 1:53am coelacanth:

i guess that wasn't the same song as shocking blue's "demon lover".
...i think that was one of the several times that my internet cut out,so i didn't hear it.
Avatar Mon. 10/5/15 1:53am BadGuyZero:

What do you call a ghost chicken?

A poultrygeist!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 10/5/15 1:53am Matt from Springfield:

@BGZ: Sandy, I hate her!!! Or is it a him?? You SEE! The ambiguity just makes me that more angry!
And I remember their support in turn after Sandy :) WCBN in Ann Arbor was also there afterwards, freeform's gotta stick together!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 10/5/15 1:55am Matt from Springfield:

That's right, the Ponderosa Stomp was a joint project this year.
WWOZ also sponsors JazzFest - you can buy Crawfish Monica and mango ice from their table to support their station itself.
Avatar Mon. 10/5/15 1:55am BadGuyZero:

I saw "House On Haunted Hill" in a theater around twenty years ago. It was part of a double-feature with "The Tingler."
  Mon. 10/5/15 1:56am ScottC:

archive.org has House On Haunted Hill
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 10/5/15 1:58am Matt from Springfield:

And bringing it all back together, BadGuyZero...
"The Tingler"! Did they include the "tingler" shock effect on the seats? That would be cumbersome but I've wanted to see that. I'm sure it's public domain/Internet Archive by now.

Was this the Seattle theater that showed old movies?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 10/5/15 1:58am Matt from Springfield:

YES! James/"Jimmy" Stewart in "Harvey", with the rabbit. Commenter P-90 filled us in on that a few weeks back.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 10/5/15 1:59am Matt from Springfield:

Good, SOLID, soulful NOLA music!

@Christina: EVERYTHING is good there, so eat EVERYTHING!
Avatar Mon. 10/5/15 2:00am mariano:

You said Zydeco right.
Avatar Mon. 10/5/15 2:02am JakeGould:

Popeye eats spinach and it’s supposed to be healthy but look at his freakishly large forearms. That’s not healthy. And he gets angry all the time and fights people. Are we sure he’s a good role model.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 10/5/15 2:03am Matt from Springfield:

Yes, drinking games for late night shows!
Avatar Mon. 10/5/15 2:03am BadGuyZero:

@Matt: They wanted to wire the seats for "The Tingler" but the fire marshal wouldn't let them. They did have the floating skeleton during "House On Haunted Hill" though.
Avatar Mon. 10/5/15 2:04am BadGuyZero:

@Matt: It was at Paramount Theater in Austin.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 10/5/15 2:04am Matt from Springfield:

@Jake: Too much spinach isn't good - Vitamin K overdose that affects your muscles and behavior.

@BGZ: Heh! Cool :)
Avatar Mon. 10/5/15 2:04am mariano:

@Matt: now I'm craving a fried oyster/fried shrimp po' boy!
  Mon. 10/5/15 2:05am KP:

I wonder if the alternate KP can match my donation
Avatar Mon. 10/5/15 2:05am JakeGould:

@MattfromSpringfield: A lot of WFMU shows can have drinking games. Like do a mega shot if Spike calls.
  Mon. 10/5/15 2:07am KP:

You are welcome Christina.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 10/5/15 2:08am Matt from Springfield:

@mariano: I had that for the first time at Coop's, on Decatur. That's a very good restaurant but I'm sure any fresh, right out of the deep fryer oysters are melt-in-your-mouth delish!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 10/5/15 2:09am Matt from Springfield:

@Jake: Mega shot! "Hellllllo pets"...

Maybe the pillars were filled with candy murderous bugs with giant needle knives.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 10/5/15 2:18am Matt from Springfield:

@BGZ: That's the kind of dreams you get, eating candy before bed..
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 10/5/15 2:18am Christina:

@BadGuyZero It's a good theory
Avatar Mon. 10/5/15 2:19am JakeGould:

Okay folks. Did something I never thought I would do. Pulled the trigger on a nice dual cassette deck on eBay. Last one I had one Crazy Eddies was still around. And I figure, if tape culture is a thing again… Well… hey!
Avatar Mon. 10/5/15 2:21am BadGuyZero:

It's a possible explanation for why they tore the pillars down. They were trying to get rid of the candy murderous bugs with giant needle knives.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 10/5/15 2:21am Matt from Springfield:

@Jake: Hey! It's a thing!
Avatar Mon. 10/5/15 2:22am BadGuyZero:

@JakeGould: And just in time for Cassette Store Day.

  Mon. 10/5/15 2:22am rw:

Nice going Jake! I'm thinking of having my old tape deck refurbished. Not that I like tapes all that much, but they seem to be creeping slowly back into my life here and there. Plus it might be fun to go through that box of old cassettes in the back of my closet to see what's in there.
Avatar Mon. 10/5/15 2:22am JakeGould:

@MattfromSpringfield: FWIW, the kids like the cassettes and I have some myself… And who knows? Maybe I can do something with this.
Avatar Mon. 10/5/15 2:25am mariano:

Odd. The only Wiki article on Ernie Barton is in German.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 10/5/15 2:26am Matt from Springfield:

Wow, that was actually Springsteen!

@Jake: I need to get a player myself. EBaying I go!
Avatar Mon. 10/5/15 2:32am JakeGould:

@Matt: I didn’t pull the trigger on this one, because I wanted another brand. But this Scott dual deck seems good. www.ebay.com...

@Christina: Your show is the final bit of music I'll listen to in New Orleans before I fly home in a few hours! I'm more than fine with that.
