This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

I love the drums on this Vivaldi! even more than adapting it to koto, the drums seem like a master stroke
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 9/24/15 7:16pm melinda:

Thanks james.
Avatar Thu. 9/24/15 7:16pm northguineahills:

So, just about 15 minutes ago, I heard a pigeon on my A/C window unit, and before I could shoo it away, there was a a hug thud, and a nearly one meter falcon had snared the pigeon and proceeded to tear it apart on my window unit. It then flew across the street to the roofs (when it noticed my wife and I filming it), and ate its prize. It left a mess of blood and feathers on our A/C, which will be fun to wash.
Avatar Thu. 9/24/15 7:17pm hyde:

@ngh wow, nature!
Avatar Thu. 9/24/15 7:18pm northguineahills:

yep, nature in Brooklyn, and, not even in a park!
Avatar Thu. 9/24/15 7:18pm northguineahills:

I love the Fitzcaraldo gif.
Avatar Thu. 9/24/15 7:21pm Flash Strap:

I wanted something that conveyed an idealistic rejection of the reality of the natural world, as well as the torrid climes of tropical summer: FITZCARRALDO had to be the one
Avatar Thu. 9/24/15 7:21pm Flash Strap:

Wow NGH. I love watching a hawk eat his prey
Avatar Thu. 9/24/15 7:22pm northguineahills:

Yeah, since it was in my window, it was even closer then when one sees one in a nature doc.
Avatar Thu. 9/24/15 7:24pm Flash Strap:

I once watched a hawk take a rat apart in the Boston public gardens. I was amazed at the surgical aspect of his consumption, almost one part of the body at a time. When he pierced the gall bladder, an arc of bile sprayed into the air and caught the sun. He then removed the spine, whole, and horked it down in one piece. So weird
Avatar Thu. 9/24/15 7:28pm Flash Strap:

I hope you guys don't mind if i just devote this whole set to Jorge Ben, because I am goin' CRAZY listening to him
Avatar Thu. 9/24/15 7:29pm Flash Strap:

Hyde, did you get the white pants back out, or are you just pantsless?
Avatar Thu. 9/24/15 7:31pm ndbob:

that's fine Evan!
Avatar Thu. 9/24/15 7:31pm hyde:

haha, my white pants are back in massachusetts so it'd be a 3 hour ride to go get 'em. but i'm not entirely pantsless.
Avatar Thu. 9/24/15 7:32pm Flash Strap:

Thanks, Bob! It's ok with me, Hyde!
Avatar Thu. 9/24/15 7:32pm ndbob:

wow - though I am a big fan of rats
Avatar Thu. 9/24/15 7:34pm Flash Strap:

rats don't get enough credit for being pretty cool guys
Avatar Thu. 9/24/15 7:34pm Doug Schulkind:

Jhor-jhay! Baing!
  Thu. 9/24/15 7:35pm doca:

Hi, Mr. Flash Strap! Greetings from the blessed tropical country
Avatar Thu. 9/24/15 7:36pm Flash Strap:

Hello Doca! I wish I could get you in to co-host a whole tropicalia show
Avatar Thu. 9/24/15 7:36pm northguineahills:

I did a primer of Jorge Ben for a non-music subreddit not too long ago. I'd share it, but b/c of other commitments, I had to do it at the last second, and it's by far, not one of my better writing moments.
Avatar Thu. 9/24/15 7:36pm ndbob:

Some of the nicest people I know are rat owners - caring, compassionate etc
Avatar Thu. 9/24/15 7:37pm Flash Strap:

Hi Hi Doug! Are you helping me with my pronunciation? Portuguese is a mystery of esoteric blends to me
  Thu. 9/24/15 7:37pm doca:

Hahah I'm not that into Tropicália that much, other DJs might help you more, but thanks for the proposal. I can help you with pronunciation, though
Avatar Thu. 9/24/15 7:39pm Flash Strap:

I thought I remembered seeing you school someone about tropicalia, or maybe Chico Buarque, on the boards... my mistake!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 9/24/15 7:39pm melinda:

I love hearing Portuguese in song.
Avatar Thu. 9/24/15 7:40pm Flash Strap:

me too, M.
  Thu. 9/24/15 7:41pm doca:

@Flash Strap: I was "dropping science" on the subject once, according to Jeff G, on a D:O show about it, but I discover lots of Brazilian music through WFMU actually
Avatar Thu. 9/24/15 7:50pm Flash Strap:

I wish I had more science to drop on the subject, time to do some reading up
Avatar Thu. 9/24/15 7:50pm listener james from westwood:

Late getting to the nature stories, but: Holy crap, ngh! They do strike like lightning and eat when the gettin's good, I guess! My parents saw a falcon or hawk casually shred a bluejay out on their deck once. As for the A/C, as Han Solo said, "Sorry for the mess."
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 9/24/15 7:52pm Ike:

Good evening!
Avatar Thu. 9/24/15 7:53pm Flash Strap:

Nice to see you Ike!
Avatar Thu. 9/24/15 7:54pm Flash Strap:

I'm gonna do an all-Czukay show, maybe next week, but I had to play this one tonight. God I love this album
Avatar Thu. 9/24/15 7:59pm ndbob:

excellent show Evan - catch the rest on the archive as always
Avatar Thu. 9/24/15 8:00pm Flash Strap:

adios bob hate to see you go as always
Avatar Thu. 9/24/15 8:04pm listener james from westwood:

Bee Gees' early stuff is a constant revelation to me.
Avatar Thu. 9/24/15 8:05pm listener james from westwood:

(Also a big fan of their dance tracks.)
Avatar Thu. 9/24/15 8:06pm Flash Strap:

I agree about the early stuff. It's a total obsession I have. Was thinking of doing a show about it, naturally. This is definitely one of the weirder ones of the whole period
Avatar Thu. 9/24/15 8:09pm Flash Strap:

Dance tracks are good too of course, despite certain ones having been played well beyond "to death", but the early stuff is so mellotron/cello heavy and totally fixated on historical lyrics... brilliant, utterly unique stuff. Robin Gibb is one of the weirdest singers in pop, and together they have the strangest harmonies
Avatar Thu. 9/24/15 8:10pm listener james from westwood:

That would be fabulous, Evan, and I suspect you'd get heavy interest among your fellow FMU DJs. Trouble for one is a fine friend of that era of theirs.
Avatar Thu. 9/24/15 8:10pm Flash Strap:

god i love the Bee Gees
Avatar Thu. 9/24/15 8:11pm listener james from westwood:

And hells yes to "Tuareg."
Avatar Thu. 9/24/15 8:11pm hyde:

that bee gees song i had never heard before. i went to clicky star the song and i was all "this is the frikking bee gees?!?!?"
Avatar Thu. 9/24/15 8:12pm Flash Strap:

I know! I mean, they are a really surprisingly unusual sounding group, but even for them that song is a shocker
Avatar Thu. 9/24/15 8:15pm Flash Strap:

love the way this track's vocals are recorded
Avatar Thu. 9/24/15 8:16pm Flash Strap:

thanks for the support on that one, James, I'm gonna do it for sure now
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 9/24/15 8:16pm melinda:

I love bee gees too but missed that last track, dammit. A bee gees show would be wonderful.
Avatar Thu. 9/24/15 8:18pm Flash Strap:

I promise when I do it, I'll play that song again. How could i not?
  Thu. 9/24/15 8:18pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- very wiggy Tropicalia - Thx man !
Avatar Thu. 9/24/15 8:19pm Flash Strap:

Hey RRN63! yeah, Gal is totally feral on this one. It's awe-inspiring
Avatar Thu. 9/24/15 8:21pm Flash Strap:

I mean, I feel like if you played that stuff to Grace Slick she'd just catch on fire. Leave nothing behind but a little ash-colored bird who'd sing an apology for not being revolutionary enough
Avatar Thu. 9/24/15 8:38pm Mayuko:

Got home! Wish I did earlier! Hello Evan and everyone.
Avatar Thu. 9/24/15 8:50pm Flash Strap:

Hello Mayuko! Happy to have you late or whenever!
Avatar Thu. 9/24/15 8:52pm hyde:

i have always loved the early free jazz gato stuff, but i seem to have missed a lot of the early 70's work mainly because the later fusion stuff is so terrible. i think i need to try out some of this stuff. (so thanks for the link at Flash Strap for Under Fire which is still live! flashstrap.blogspot.com...)
Avatar Thu. 9/24/15 8:54pm northguineahills:

Wow, Gato w/ Lonnie Smith, somehow missed this one.
Avatar Thu. 9/24/15 8:54pm Flash Strap:

Later Gato stuff is pretty rough, and the early free stuff is really good, but for my money the best of the best is the early 70's. he was just in a state of grace for that whole period
Avatar Thu. 9/24/15 8:55pm Flash Strap:

he also played on a lot of Piero Umiliani's late 60's jazz recordings
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 9/24/15 8:57pm melinda:

That was beautiful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 9/24/15 8:57pm coelacanth:

Hi Flash & Explorers.
...i wouldn't say hi now but for the hope that your timeframe is as it usually is!
Avatar Thu. 9/24/15 8:59pm Flash Strap:

I'll tip a bit over, C. As usual! Glad you're with us!
Avatar Thu. 9/24/15 9:00pm hyde:

@Flash wow! I didn't know about the early Lalo Schifrin thing either. I somehow always thought he sort of went right from free jazz into the bad cheese I generally associate him with, but I clearly was sorely mistaken.
Avatar Thu. 9/24/15 9:02pm Flash Strap:

I envy you the 1st-time listens you are now able to have, Hyde! Definitely check out Bolivia, Chapter 1, and Last Tango if you've never really heard that one (it's really good)
Avatar Thu. 9/24/15 9:04pm Flash Strap:

Under Fire, Chapter 2 (and 3&4, but to a lesser extent), Fenix, and Two Pictures Years (1965-1968- Music by Piero Umiliani) are also really great.
Avatar Thu. 9/24/15 9:08pm northguineahills:

Dinner time, thanks Flash! Always love hearing new perspectives on artists I thought I already knew.
Avatar Thu. 9/24/15 9:11pm Flash Strap:

Thanks for listening, NGH. Always enjoy having you here in the chatbox. Enjoy your dinner, my friend
Avatar Thu. 9/24/15 9:12pm Flash Strap:

I'm obsessed with this particular track, and Eddie Harris in general. This one just escalates into infinite intensities
Avatar Thu. 9/24/15 9:15pm hyde:

ah, it's a Donald "Duck" Dunn bass line. That explains it.
Avatar Thu. 9/24/15 9:16pm Flash Strap:

oh shit, is it really?
Avatar Thu. 9/24/15 9:17pm Flash Strap:

it is. That DOES explain it
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 9/24/15 9:17pm coelacanth:

hmm. i have no basslines at the moment. i'm listening via laptop with no headphones.
Avatar Thu. 9/24/15 9:17pm hyde:

yeah, looks like he was the bassist for all of Come on Down!
Avatar Thu. 9/24/15 9:18pm Doug Schulkind:

Aylertime.
Avatar Thu. 9/24/15 9:19pm Flash Strap:

man, I saw Dunn play with Neil Young when I was really young. It was the first time I recognized a bassist as having a unique, powerful, creative role
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 9/24/15 9:19pm coelacanth:

i just realised that this piano part is like the one during the slow section in "glad" by traffic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 9/24/15 9:20pm coelacanth:

(well,not any more!)
Avatar Thu. 9/24/15 9:22pm Flash Strap:

I actually can't say I've ever listened to Traffic, weirdly enough. I don't even know what I'm missing
Avatar Thu. 9/24/15 9:23pm Flash Strap:

I know one of the guys was in the first incarnation of Jaki Liebezeit's Phantomband, right?
Avatar Thu. 9/24/15 9:23pm listener james from westwood:

Must shuffle reluctantly off to bed. Thanks much, Evan!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 9/24/15 9:24pm coelacanth:

Evan, i cannot conceive of you not liking traffic!

(and i do not know the answer to that.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 9/24/15 9:24pm Uncle Michael:

Hola.
Avatar Thu. 9/24/15 9:24pm Doug Schulkind:

Flash Strap,
Trying to work on my own show while lending an ear toward your show is impossible. I just want to chain you to your mixing console and force you to keep at it for another 15 hours. Good thing for you the Pope is on our soil or I might've seriously considered it.
Avatar Thu. 9/24/15 9:27pm hyde:

i haven't really listened to Traffic since i was in high school, but i sure used to love those records.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 9/24/15 9:27pm Uncle Michael:

This Santo & Johnny...don't speak...
Avatar Thu. 9/24/15 9:27pm Flash Strap:

Thanks, Doug. Sadly, this is the last track of the night, which is good news for your show prep I suppose.

Hi Uncle!

I will do some Traffic homeweork, C.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 9/24/15 9:28pm Uncle Michael:

I still love Traffic. I loved seeing them in '94.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 9/24/15 9:31pm Uncle Michael:

What is real life?
Avatar Thu. 9/24/15 9:33pm hyde:

thanks for the show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 9/24/15 9:34pm coelacanth:

Thank you Flash and i abstain from directing you toward a particular album, because the early stuff evolved then what it evolved into evolved some more then that evolved 2 X again! i like it all,but you may not.

later on y'all!
Avatar Thu. 9/24/15 9:35pm Mayuko:

It's been perfect music while I polish my seashells! Thanks Evan!
Avatar Thu. 9/24/15 9:36pm Flash Strap:

I don't know, Uncle. Slip of the tongue, I guess
Avatar Thu. 9/24/15 9:36pm Flash Strap:

Thanks all for listening! My best to your seashells, Mayuko
Avatar Thu. 9/24/15 9:37pm hambone:

that was great! someone played "quiet village" on another wfmu show earlier today, and it made me think of explorers room. ..goodnight.
Avatar Thu. 9/24/15 9:37pm Flash Strap:

Hey hambone! which one?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 9/24/15 9:38pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks Flash.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 9/24/15 9:38pm coelacanth:

i can keep track of my weeks more easily than those on your end!
Avatar Thu. 9/24/15 9:38pm hambone:

ah, i would have to go back and check the playlist..
