Options August 11, 2015: The Many, Many Themes of Ron Grainer
Morricone Island remembers Australian-born film and television composer Ron Grainer (1922-1981) on what would have been his 93rd birthday. Perhaps most well known as the composer of the Doctor Who Theme (with Delia Derbyshire and the BBC Radiophonic Workshop), Grainer's body of work is so much more. While a fixture on the British pop music scene in the early 60's, he composed for television (Maigret, The Prisoner, Steptoe & Son) and film (To Sir, With Love, The Omega Man). He also discovered The Eagles! No, not Glen Frey and Don Henley, but the Bristol-based instrumental quartet which he produced and used as studio musicians for a number of his television themes.

Boy! You had better play that “Dr. Who” theme tonight!
  Tue. 8/11/15 7:04pm Cooh John:

I wat to hear "The Prisoner."
Avatar Tue. 8/11/15 7:06pm fleep:

Did not know Maigret was a stripper.
  Tue. 8/11/15 7:07pm V Priceless:

Woo! Hey!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 8/11/15 7:08pm dale:

sexy AND creepy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/11/15 7:08pm JakeGould:

@fleep: I was going to say that theme sounded a bit randy, but wanted to be a bit classy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 8/11/15 7:09pm Ike:

For many in the UK in the 60s, this theme was the first time they'd ever heard something made without "real" instruments (and supposedly a lot of it was made using modified static) which is why it creeped a lot of them the hell out.
  Tue. 8/11/15 7:10pm Cooh John:

Perhaps Maigret was undercover.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 8/11/15 7:11pm dale:

59? holy crap - i better start enjoying life before my ticket expires.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 8/11/15 7:12pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- just getting here: which was the one that sounded like a good Shadows track ??
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/11/15 7:12pm melinda:

I love the Dr. Who theme.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/11/15 7:13pm JakeGould:

@RevRabbiNov63: You mean like the Casavette’s “Shadows?”
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 8/11/15 7:14pm Īke:

12. (Or 13 if you count John Hurt, but don't do that. He was just a guest Doctor.) Also it was cancelled in 1989 and wasn't brought back until 2005. Still the longest-running sci-fi series.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/11/15 7:15pm JakeGould:

The Prisoner!!! YES!
  Tue. 8/11/15 7:15pm V Priceless:

Cool!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 8/11/15 7:15pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I mean w/ guitar like Hank Marvin Shadows - or I think I do...
Dr. Who & I began the same month - the show's premiere reportedly 1st thing on BBC after JFK assassination coverage.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 8/11/15 7:16pm Mike East:

I made a friend on the train a couple weeks ago because of my Morricone Island Teeshirt. He mistook it for a Morricone Youth tee, which I explained is the same guy, but a different thing...though kinda the same. Had a good discussion about radio the rest of the train ride.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/11/15 7:18pm JakeGould:

@RevRabbi1163: Seems a bit like a mixup of info to create a legend like that. Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963. Dr. Who first aired November 23, 1963. Dr. Who probably just aired aired after normal news coverage.
  Tue. 8/11/15 7:18pm Cooh John:

Thanks for the alternate version of "The Prisoner."
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 8/11/15 7:23pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@Jake - same dif?
Ron Granier is the stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/11/15 7:25pm JakeGould:

@RevRabbi1163: Well, it’s not like, “U.S. President John F. Kennedy was shot… And now, Dr. Who here on the BBC!” 24 hours makes all the difference.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/11/15 7:25pm melinda:

More Dr. Who! Yeah!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 8/11/15 7:27pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- the coverage may have been total - or, just next day. Aldous Huxley & C.S. Lewis died that day also, & 'With the Beatles' was released too.
  Tue. 8/11/15 7:27pm Julie:

Joe is still doing that??
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 8/11/15 7:28pm Īke:

@Jake & @RRN63, Wiki says, "The BBC believed that many viewers had missed this introduction to a new series due to the coverage of the assassination as well as a series of power blackouts across the country, and they broadcast it again on 30 November 1963, just before episode two." (Some other sources say the blackouts were the bigger issue.) There was also a rumor that DW was one of the first regularly-scheduled things to air after continuous news coverage but I'm not sure about that one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 8/11/15 7:30pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Cheers Ike. Lee Oswald was a fan too.
  Tue. 8/11/15 7:32pm V Priceless:

This is great!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 8/11/15 7:32pm Ike:

Wow, that alternate version of "The Prisoner" was great! I liked that better than the original version.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/11/15 7:33pm JakeGould:

U.K. or the U.S.: “The Eagles” and “Eagles” just look like a bunch of dinks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/11/15 7:40pm JakeGould:

Yes! Tom Baker! The only Dr. Who worth anything!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 8/11/15 7:42pm Ike:

@Jake, pffft, stop baiting me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/11/15 7:43pm JakeGould:

Tom Baker’s look was inspired by Toulouse-Lautrec. Face!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 8/11/15 7:46pm Mike East:

but he wasn't the last man on earth...he found a community of survivors. I believe he sacrifices himself at the end to save them? I seem to remember him striking a jesus pose at the end.
  Tue. 8/11/15 7:47pm V Priceless:

Great flick! With the ever-creepy Anthony Zerbe!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/11/15 7:48pm JakeGould:

@MikeEast: In the book he realizes that he is not being hunted, but rather he is the hunter. All of society had become these vampires, but he was the real monster to their new world.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 8/11/15 7:49pm Mike East:

@JakeGoule - Yeah, I remember hearing that. I gotta get to reading that one of these days, for sure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 8/11/15 7:50pm Mike East:

*Gould...excuse me
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/11/15 7:51pm JakeGoule:

@MikeEast: Yeah, in Hollywood everything is biblical and everything has to be redeemed. Part of the reason Hollywood stinks.
  Tue. 8/11/15 7:52pm Chris T.:

Is it ever really the Last Man On Earth?
  Tue. 8/11/15 7:53pm Cooh John:

Great show Devon. Sailing away from Morricone Island into the sunset....
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/11/15 7:53pm JakeGould:

@ChrisT.: I like how pretty much every “last man on Earth” story is a paranoid white guy who is “trapped” trying to survive among “savages”… Oh all of these savages who know not of this white guy and his desire to bring white guy’s society back from the rubble!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 8/11/15 7:54pm Mike East:

@Chris T - good point. The only one that comes to mind is that Burgess Meredith Twilight Zone episode
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/11/15 7:56pm JakeGould:

@MikeEast: The last thoughts if the main character in “I Am Legend” as he faces execution—and faces who he is in this new world—is: “Full circle. A new terror born in death. A new superstition entering the unassailable fortress of forever. I am legend.”
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/11/15 7:57pm JakeGould:

@MikeEast: Even Burgess Meredith in that Twilight Zone episode: All of these savages of the real world… All I want to do is read!
  Tue. 8/11/15 7:58pm Bklyn kid:

thanks for the broadcast! ill have to rewind in the archive to hear it all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/11/15 7:59pm JakeGould:

Thanks Devon!
