Problemist also have a fine and relatively easy to find LP: www.discogs.com...
Avatar Tue. 8/11/15 12:11pm still b/p:

I will report again what I posted a few moments ago on Bill Mac's show: I'm going to look for my What's Going On cassette. I repeat it because I will be finding the cassette while a cassettee-centric show is happening. Maybe I'll resurrect other tapes in the search. So you see how it's all...y'know...
Avatar Tue. 8/11/15 12:13pm Jeff Golick:

Hey, Tony, have you been keeping tabs on what seems (from my distant vantage point) to be a cassette resurgence, a la vinyl?
Avatar Tue. 8/11/15 12:13pm Tony Coulter:

Heya, still b/p!
  Tue. 8/11/15 12:14pm Dean:

Can't refrain from noting pun sightings. "Keeping tabs" on cassettes?
Avatar Tue. 8/11/15 12:15pm Rich in Washington:

I just read that the Columbia House Music Club just filed for chapter 11. Maybe they'll have to repay a penny.
Avatar Tue. 8/11/15 12:16pm Jeff Golick:

@Dean: I *almost* added a note to that effect...but...yeah.
Avatar Tue. 8/11/15 12:16pm Tony Coulter:

@ Jeff: I'm certainly aware of the cassette resurgence, yes -- tho not too up on the more recent cassette-only releases. I do try to slip a recent cassette release onto this show now and again.

I never keep tabs on cassettes. (Heya, Dean!)

hi ho, Tony! Hello, fellow hisstians.
  Tue. 8/11/15 12:22pm Dean:

I learned yesterday that Stalin's granddaughter runs a boutique in Portland, OR. Might have dropped in had I known this when I was recently in your neck of the woods, Tony.
Avatar Tue. 8/11/15 12:22pm Tony Coulter:

By the by, William Davenport, one of the core members of Problemist, was the founder/publisher of Unsound Magazine.
Avatar Tue. 8/11/15 12:23pm Tony Coulter:

@ Dean: Really!?! What's its name?
  Tue. 8/11/15 12:24pm Dean:

Haven't quite figured that out yet, but here's a recent PBS story about her and her late mother: http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/think-know-story-stalin-read-extraordinary-life-daughter-svetlana/
Avatar Tue. 8/11/15 12:25pm still b/p:

Can anybody roughly identify the year/period of these tapes? Found these online pics randomly, but I have an unopened Sony 30 min. tape of similar packaging/graphics. Just curious. I'm thinking possibly 70s.

This story reports that she runs a "boutique": http://www.oregonlive.com/portland/index.ssf/2011/11/portland_granddaughter_of_jose.html
Avatar Tue. 8/11/15 12:27pm Tony Coulter:

@ still b/p: Can't say I really know, but I would also guess late '70s.
  Tue. 8/11/15 12:27pm Dean:

Looks like you're right, still b/p. Late '60s into the '70s: http://pureanalogue.ru/index.php/en/catalogue/audio-cassettes/sony/sony-by-models/sony-low-noise-auto-sensor

@ Dean: Thanks for zee links. Maybe they are being deliberately cagey about the name of her store, to give her some privacy and protect her from nuts.

@ Dean: aha -- 3 Monkeys. Think I've been in there, briefly.
Avatar Tue. 8/11/15 12:39pm still b/p:

Thanks for the cassette link, Dean. Mine's in cardboard inside its cellophane -- that might mean it's from that product period but even before the plastic clamshell boxes came along.
Avatar Tue. 8/11/15 12:39pm Rich in Washington:

I played a rare Negativland/Don Joyce track from one of the Unsound cassette comps on my show a few weeks back
Avatar Tue. 8/11/15 12:44pm Tony Coulter:

This cassette? www.discogs.com...

I'm planning to play that thing on a future Tape Hiss. It's great.

Mark Hosler contributes to the Problemist LP, by the way.
Avatar Tue. 8/11/15 12:46pm Rich in Washington:

Yes, that one. I don't actually have the cassette but got the Negativland track from a fellow Negativland fanatic/collector. Looking forward to hearing it all.
Avatar Tue. 8/11/15 12:49pm Tony Coulter:

Was that your Don Joyce tribute show? And is the archive still available? If so, linkage please!
Avatar Tue. 8/11/15 12:50pm Rich in Washington:

Yes. It will likely expire soon on KBOO's website but will live on forever here: uglyradio.wordpress.com...
Avatar Tue. 8/11/15 12:52pm Tony Coulter:

Thanks!! Will check it out fer sure.

Avatar Tue. 8/11/15 1:06pm Tony Coulter:

I will be really impressed if anyone can ID the record underneath today's cassettes, from the little bit showing. Anybody know it?
Avatar Tue. 8/11/15 1:15pm Tony Coulter:

OK -- give up? It's this rather second-tier new wave pop 12", which I'm keeping for one track: rymimg.com...
  Tue. 8/11/15 1:16pm Dean:

That is familiar. Did you pay more than $5.98?
Avatar Tue. 8/11/15 1:16pm listener james from westwood:

Feeling quite fortunate to be listening live today. All hail appointment radio! (And unlike my other appointments, I don't cool my heels in a waiting room or have to sit on butcher paper like a pound of olive loaf!)
Avatar Tue. 8/11/15 1:18pm Tony Coulter:

@ Dean: Nope, one little dollar only.
Avatar Tue. 8/11/15 1:21pm Tony Coulter:

No one here is required to sit on butcher paper -- but at the end of the show you will all be tightly wrapped in cellophane. Wouldn't want you to spoil.
  Tue. 8/11/15 1:21pm Dean:

In 2002 a"group" dubbed Omegaman released an album, one song of which was titled "Jef Left," apparently a tribute to the same guy. Maybe it *is* the same guy. http://omegaman.bandcamp.com/album/here-we-go
Avatar Tue. 8/11/15 1:27pm Tony Coulter:

Here's a great D.D.A.A. video: www.youtube.com...
Avatar Tue. 8/11/15 1:29pm Jeff Golick:

I'm guessing Jef Left because one of his Fs went missing.

In a previous life, I ran the NYC marathon, wearing letter stickers on my shirt, as is the fashion, so that the cheering throngs could call out my name. One of my Fs fell off at some point, and I did later hear, "Go, Jeff-with-one-F!"

Ok, back to work.
Avatar Tue. 8/11/15 1:35pm Tony Coulter:

This Comelade cassette comes with the most elaborate packaging ever: two cardboard pyramids: rymimg.com...
Avatar Tue. 8/11/15 1:36pm Tony Coulter:

My copy is pyramid-less, unfortunately. Not all copies came with them -- they are not exactly easy to mail.
Avatar Tue. 8/11/15 1:39pm Jeff Golick:

Wow, Tony, those are impressive structures. All the better to tune into the spheres.

@Dean: re Omegaman, I like that one of the tags for his/their work is "slick emotionless jazz."
  Tue. 8/11/15 1:42pm Dean:

When you wanna hear slick emotionless jazz, you gotta hear slick emotionless jazz.

Last night I heard Jimmy LaFave at a nice venue here in town. His drummer, Bobby Kallus, is one of the best in the business. He has a new guitarist, whose name I missed, but imagine LaFave, a huge fan of Dylan, Springsteen, Woody Guthrie, etc., featuring a guitarist in the Marc Ribot/Thurston Moore mold. Really weird, often quite exciting. Looking forward to hearing the band again Thursday night.
Avatar Tue. 8/11/15 1:43pm Rich in Washington:

would be cool to see a gallery of impressive notable cassette packaging ideas. I remember some female punk band who would mail their cassette out in empty tampon cartons.
Avatar Tue. 8/11/15 1:47pm Tony Coulter:

Here's the most amazing one I own: rymimg.com...
Avatar Tue. 8/11/15 1:48pm Tony Coulter:

This one is pretty great too: rymimg.com...

I will play both on future shows.
Avatar Tue. 8/11/15 1:50pm Rich in Washington:

Tasty!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 8/11/15 1:57pm Cecile:

hola, all!

I just listened to your premium, Tony, and it's all great. Like having a Tony Coulter show around when there's no internet.
Avatar Tue. 8/11/15 2:00pm Tony Coulter:

Thanks, Cecile! Very glad you like it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 8/11/15 2:01pm Cecile:

there are some songs that if they were covered by the right person could even be hits! it's incredible about the depth of talent in the tape underground.
Avatar Tue. 8/11/15 2:04pm TDK60:

Long live tape hiss. Just today, am sending a cassette to a friend via post.

Apologies for screwing up the accuplaylist a few moments ago. I'm sure you were all able to figure out what was going on, sound-wise, though.

all good, Tony! Enjoying thissss hisssss
Avatar Tue. 8/11/15 2:18pm Tony Coulter:

@ TDK60: Out of curiosity: What cassette are you mailing?
Avatar Tue. 8/11/15 2:29pm TDK60:

I'm mailing a copy of an LP by an obscure but really good, and current, West Virginia rock band called Jet Set Vapour Trails.
Avatar Tue. 8/11/15 2:36pm Peter Nelson:

Thanks Tony. Wonderful, strange show as usual. Particularly enjoyed the Pascal Comelade.
Avatar Tue. 8/11/15 2:37pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, Peter! Yes, early '80s Comelade is the best.
Avatar Tue. 8/11/15 2:38pm Peter Nelson:

Yeah...his latest album isn't nearly as deep and beautiful.
Avatar Tue. 8/11/15 2:38pm Doug Schulkind:

I think Tony's show has been wange and stronderful. Especially wange, in fact.
  Tue. 8/11/15 2:38pm Dean:

Well, that sax player was Jan Steele.
Avatar Tue. 8/11/15 2:39pm Peter Nelson:
