Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 6/9/15 11:46am Carmichael:

I have a 9 o'clock meeting, but Like MacArthur, I shall return.
Avatar Tue. 6/9/15 11:53am Tony Coulter:

Heya, PS Simon and General MacCarmichael!!

So, PS Simon: You showed up more than 8 hours early? Impressive.
Avatar Tue. 6/9/15 11:54am Tony Coulter:

Sorry for the poor quality of today's playlist photo. It was taken in dim light.
Avatar Tue. 6/9/15 12:00pm listener james from westwood:

@Carmichael: Just don't tick off Harry Truman!

How do, Tony and all!!
Avatar Tue. 6/9/15 12:01pm Tony Coulter:

Hey ho, Listener J!
Avatar Tue. 6/9/15 12:02pm Cecile:

hola!
Avatar Tue. 6/9/15 12:03pm Tony Coulter:

Greetings, Cecile!!

Hey Mr. Tony!
Avatar Tue. 6/9/15 12:03pm Tony Coulter:

Ahoy, VP!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 6/9/15 12:04pm JtotheK:

hi everybody
Avatar Tue. 6/9/15 12:05pm Cecile:

I remember Surplus Stock. I remember them being good, too.
Avatar Tue. 6/9/15 12:06pm Tony Coulter:

Hey there, JtotheK!
Avatar Tue. 6/9/15 12:09pm Tony Coulter:

Surplus Stock's "Let's Kill Each Other" is an all-time classic. Has gotten a fair amount of play on FMU over the years.
Avatar Tue. 6/9/15 12:10pm Cecile:

I remember hearing them on WCBN, too in the 80s
  Tue. 6/9/15 12:14pm Dean:

Are Tape Hiss programs played back on a cassette player, or do you digitize them for airing? In any event, which cassette player do you use?
Avatar Tue. 6/9/15 12:18pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, Dean!

I burn the cassettes to CD-R first before every show. That way you don't have to wait for me to rewind and cue up a side. Plus, I like having them digitized.

I'm using a very unfancy Tascam deck -- a 202 mkv.
Avatar Tue. 6/9/15 12:20pm Jeff Golick:

Locked and loaded.
Avatar Tue. 6/9/15 12:21pm Jeff Golick:

By which I mean I'm strapped into my chair, drunk.
Avatar Tue. 6/9/15 12:22pm Tony Coulter:

Ah good -- this isn't the OK Corral.

Heya, Jeff!
Avatar Tue. 6/9/15 12:22pm Tony Coulter:

Umm, BPA are *extremely" Pere Ubu-ish, no?
Avatar Tue. 6/9/15 12:27pm Tony Coulter:

And, of course, Ptôse are the French Residents....
Avatar Tue. 6/9/15 12:30pm Jeff Golick:

@pacificstandardsimon: I love your image today.
Avatar Tue. 6/9/15 12:33pm Tony Coulter:

Talking of CD-Rs and cassettes: This cassette is 31 years old. I seriously doubt that the CD-R copy I made of it yesterday will still play in 31 years.
Avatar Tue. 6/9/15 12:35pm Tony Coulter:

I've had loads of CD-Rs crap out on me after a couple of years, even though they are completely unscratched.
Avatar Tue. 6/9/15 12:35pm V Priceless:

@ TC re: BPA: yeah, sonically & topically!

that's a drag about the CD-Rs
  Tue. 6/9/15 12:37pm Dean:

Perfect sound forever.

I have replaced dozens of my commercial CDs pressed at the PDO plant in England during the late '80s and early '90s. They were defectively manufactured, resulting in bronzing. Fortunately, PDO replaced them free of charge.
Avatar Tue. 6/9/15 12:49pm Tony Coulter:

One thing about these older cassette-only releases: They almost never show up second-hand in used record stores, for some reason. The good ones, anyway....
Avatar Tue. 6/9/15 12:53pm Tony Coulter:

Part of it, of course, is that they were usually very limited runs. Still....
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 6/9/15 12:57pm pacific standard simon:

@Tony Coulter @11:53 Good morning -- I knew I was very likely to wake late today, so put my two cents in ahead of time.

@Jeff Golick @12:30 Me too -- found it on one of those massive animated gif sites.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 6/9/15 1:05pm pacific standard simon:

I have a tape-to-USB deck (made by Grace -- never heard of them) which I seldom use, despite having bought it to convert the four boxes of Over The Edge and Subgenius radio programs I taped of KPFA in the '80s & '90s.
Avatar Tue. 6/9/15 1:07pm Tony Coulter:

Merzbow sure sounded different back in '83, no?
Avatar Tue. 6/9/15 1:09pm Cecile:

I kind of like them better!
Avatar Tue. 6/9/15 1:10pm Tony Coulter:

Me too, actually.
Avatar Tue. 6/9/15 1:18pm Tony Coulter:

"Stay tuned for the backside of Paris / Hilton."
Avatar Tue. 6/9/15 1:20pm βrian:

Sacré mole, what's going on?
Avatar Tue. 6/9/15 1:23pm Tony Coulter:

Greets, βrian! Are you talking chocolate sauce or small burrowing animals?
Avatar Tue. 6/9/15 1:25pm Tony Coulter:

More Residents à la française
Avatar Tue. 6/9/15 1:33pm βrian:

molé, bien sûr.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 6/9/15 1:34pm Carmichael:

OK, back to the desk and, therefore, the music. Richard Pinhas, eh? He's a favorite on the FMU, methinks.
Avatar Tue. 6/9/15 1:35pm Tony Coulter:

Heya, Carmichael! Welcome back to the desk that never ends.
Avatar Tue. 6/9/15 1:42pm Tony Coulter:

btw, the cover art for this "Fragment 1" comp is by Jad Fair.
Avatar Tue. 6/9/15 1:43pm Rich in Washington:

this reminds me of Kurt Schwitter's Ursonate
Avatar Tue. 6/9/15 1:44pm Tony Coulter:

Pigs alway come running when you perform the Ursonate.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 6/9/15 1:46pm pacific standard simon:

I once told my art history instructor that Schwitters had been rendered obsolete by "Surfin' Bird" -- what cheek!
  Tue. 6/9/15 1:46pm Dean:

Schwitters was a bit of a ham.
Avatar Tue. 6/9/15 1:48pm Tony Coulter:

This comp is commendably freeform.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 6/9/15 1:54pm pacific standard simon:

These guys was bitten by a radioactive PiL.
Avatar Tue. 6/9/15 1:56pm Tony Coulter:

The last two tracks were out of order on the cassette's tracklist (I swear!) -- but I just righted things.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 6/9/15 1:59pm Carmichael:

I just clicky-starred this Mustamu song, Tony!
Avatar Tue. 6/9/15 2:00pm Tony Coulter:

Serves it right.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 6/9/15 2:01pm pacific standard simon:

This tape really IS all over the place.
Avatar Tue. 6/9/15 2:01pm Tony Coulter:

More Zeth ahead, btw.
Avatar Tue. 6/9/15 2:07pm Tony Coulter:

He's Indonesian, tho based in the Netherlands.
Avatar Tue. 6/9/15 2:08pm Webhamster Henry:

Are you using noise reduction, as the cover recommends?
Avatar Tue. 6/9/15 2:10pm Tony Coulter:

Indeed I am, Webhamster Henry. I am very law-abiding. (Greetings too!)
Avatar Tue. 6/9/15 2:13pm βrian:

Oh, it's *this* West Samoan Police Band! I was thinking of another ...
Avatar Tue. 6/9/15 2:22pm Tony Coulter:

Paul Van Kemenade -- heard earlier -- is the sax player with Palinckx & Palinckx.
Avatar Tue. 6/9/15 2:22pm Tony Coulter:

... who are on now.
  Tue. 6/9/15 2:24pm Dean:

No relation, I take it, to the Palinckx who recorded on Victo?
Avatar Tue. 6/9/15 2:24pm Tony Coulter:

In fact -- it is them!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 6/9/15 2:25pm Stanley:

Greets Peeps!
  Tue. 6/9/15 2:25pm Dean:

Wow. And them again, evidently. I might have heard them live at Victo, late '90s. Can't remember...
Avatar Tue. 6/9/15 2:26pm Tony Coulter:

Ahoy, Stanley!
  Tue. 6/9/15 2:28pm Mark Williams:

very late to the party today, and for a Tape Hiss show no less. Terrible. Anyway, hi Tony and all.
Avatar Tue. 6/9/15 2:28pm Tony Coulter:

Heya, Mark!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 6/9/15 2:29pm dave:

Hey Tony, fascinating tape! Sorry I missed the beginning...
Avatar Tue. 6/9/15 2:31pm Tony Coulter:

Hey Dave! Yeah, the way it's all over the place feels much more like a freeform radio show than a typical comp.
Avatar Tue. 6/9/15 2:34pm Jeff Golick:

This is great stuff.
  Tue. 6/9/15 2:34pm Dean:

Yeah, I heard them in 2000: http://fimav.qc.ca/en/archives/fimav-2000/

That closing show with Oswald/Plimley, Crispell, and Cecil Taylor, was a doozy.
Avatar Tue. 6/9/15 2:35pm Jeff Golick:

Though I think I prefer Palinckx.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 6/9/15 2:36pm pacific standard simon:

The show has morphed into Destination:OUT
Avatar Tue. 6/9/15 2:40pm Tony Coulter:

FMU-related factoid: Pseu Braun has recorded with Smersh (she's not on this tape, though).
Avatar Tue. 6/9/15 2:42pm V Priceless:

neat, TC! Was it a CIAJ-Smersh mash-up?
Avatar Tue. 6/9/15 2:44pm Tony Coulter:

Nope, just Pseu guesting with the Smersh folks.
Avatar Tue. 6/9/15 2:46pm Tony Coulter:

She's on this LP: www.discogs.com...
Avatar Tue. 6/9/15 2:52pm Tony Coulter:

Sorry again for the blurriness of today's playlist photo. The Smersh tape is particularly hard to make out.
Avatar Tue. 6/9/15 2:59pm V Priceless:

Thanks Tony!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 6/9/15 3:00pm dave:

Interesting stuff - thanks, Tony!
Avatar Tue. 6/9/15 3:01pm listener james from westwood:

Well, Smersh was a mysterious organization, so it's fitting.

Smashing lineup today, Tony! Oxide has a friend in you. Thanks and enjoy the upcoming Tuesday time away!
Avatar Tue. 6/9/15 3:01pm Tony Coulter:

Thanks James!

See you everybody!!
Avatar Tue. 6/9/15 3:08pm Cecile:
