Options March 4, 2015: 3 hours of Stiff Records with guest Richard Balls, author of BE STIFF: THE STIFF RECORDS STORY

Listen to this show: | Add or read comments

Stiff Records was one of the most groundbreaking labels of the punk/new wave era, launching the careers of Nick Lowe, Elvis Costello, Madness, Lene Lovich, Ian Dury, Rachel Sweet, Wreckless Eric, and dozens of others.

British author Richard Balls -- who previously documented the life of Stiff star Ian Dury in a 1999 biography -- has put together a definitive history of the much-beloved label. I chatted with Richard about his blow-by-blow account of The World's Most Flexible Record Label, and of course you'll hear hit after hit from Stiff's glory days. Listen to the show, and find out why it took Balls to write about Stiff.

Pretenders weren't on Stiff as far as I recall. The Akron album came out of the label working with Devo, but I don't know how aware Stiff folks were of the parallel Cleveland scene.

  Wed. 3/4/15 11:06pm Carmichael:

Dave Stewart plays Gretsch guitars. That's why he's so cool.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/4/15 11:06pm JakeGould:

Carmichael, what are you? A copy of “Guitar Player?”
  Wed. 3/4/15 11:06pm PJ:

Nothing about the Pogues, the last band that had some success on the label?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/4/15 11:07pm coelacanth:

Carmichael, that 2nd album gets shit-talked but i think it's spectacular!
  Wed. 3/4/15 11:07pm Carmichael:

I saw Devo 2 summers ago. They blasted away everyone waiting for Blondie.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/4/15 11:07pm efd:

I should point out this is not the Eurythmics' Dave Stewart.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/4/15 11:08pm coelacanth:

and the Lesley Gore tribute continues.
  Wed. 3/4/15 11:08pm Carmichael:

Oh shit, thanks for clarifying. Never mind ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 3/4/15 11:09pm Stevel:

Glad you pointed that out. I'd have guessed otherwise.

Madness. This song is on one of my favorite albums ever,
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/4/15 11:09pm efd:

I naturally made the same assumption, given the time period.
  Wed. 3/4/15 11:09pm Carmichael:

I loves me some Gretsches, Jake.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/4/15 11:10pm coelacanth:

i'm assuming that's with Bob 2; but was Alan still amongst us?(them)

  Wed. 3/4/15 11:14pm Carmichael:

Has no one yet mentioned Jake Riviera?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/4/15 11:15pm efd:

he was mentioned quite a bit earlier in the show, but he left the label a year after it started up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/4/15 11:16pm JakeGould:

I know for a fact that “Wham!” and “Frankie Goes to Hollywood” shared the same stylist who came up with those baggy t-shirts… And she’s alive and well in NYC.

Thanks, Evan.

Devo was an extremely powerful punk rock band, early on.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/4/15 11:33pm coelacanth:

i've only seen a few stiff artists. the pogues were one- but Shane wasn't there. (i don't know if he was supposed to be or not.)

I just have to say, the absolute smartest thing I did leading up to this show was to spend last night timing it all out. The first time I worked it out it ended up running until about 12:20am!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/4/15 11:37pm coelacanth:

i did see Macgowan, but with an alternate band. (i don't think that counts as a "stiff artist"!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/4/15 11:37pm JakeGould:

Wow! Now I know Jona Lewie does this song! Yup, I appreciate yet don’t have the knowledge at times.

efd, that radio station in LI was WLIR, I'm sure, wasn't it? I don't Lene ever getting really big here, except to us geeks who read the credits in the liner notes.

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 3/4/15 11:53pm Stevel:

I was lucky to be near decent radio during the 73-86 years. KTCL, Fort Collins CO, WORT, Madison, WI, KFML Denver (RIP, long ago.) There was also an early Alternative-format statin in Pittsburgh from 86'88 (forget the call letters)

Its hard to remember how difficult it could be to hear different music, pre internet. Still today, there's a lot to cut through.

Thanks efd and WFMU. Pledging again soon!

I wouldn't trade the modern state of the industry for the bad old days at all. I mean, limited as it was, the 80's did have one of the greatest varieties of music in the top 40 since the 60's, but while we're scaling down from musicians having their own private planes, we're having many more musicians scaling up to being able to make a better income from music.

“Its hard to remember how difficult it could be to hear different music, pre internet. Still today, there's a lot to cut through.” Indeed. Mixed feelings on how the Internet has opened up the world to more music and creativity, but I think it’s all for the better.

I paused it earlier, so it's not over yet for me!!! :-)

I've been regularly listening to various shows on WFMU over the past 2 years. After Irwin's show on industrial musicals, this is the best show I've ever heard. Interesting subject matter, knowledgeable guest, the best music, you can't ask for much more. Evan, thanks!

I did not see any songs played by The Plasmatics from this show, and they were on the Stiff label...
