Hey, guys
Avatar Mon. 2/23/15 12:01pm Jeff J:

Hey duke and doca! Thanks for joining us.
Avatar Mon. 2/23/15 12:02pm listener james from westwood:

Howdy, Jeff and Jeff! Snowed in with work and a bit of snow, but wanted to say hi before the wondrous tumult began.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 2/23/15 12:06pm Uncle Michael:

Watching an awards show...being waterboarded...

Touch choice.
Avatar    Mon. 2/23/15 12:09pm duke:

@UM Couldn't agree more
Avatar Mon. 2/23/15 12:10pm Jeff J:

Hi Listener James! Hope the music helps to melt some of the snowed-in work feeling.

Uncle Michael - This year's Oscars was less like waterboarding and more like extreme sleep deprivation.
  Mon. 2/23/15 12:12pm tr`sh:

A tentet !
And not the little or feminized tent kind.
Avatar Mon. 2/23/15 12:14pm Jeff Golick:

Hey, tr`sh! They left the last -ettes off for savings?

Believe the cello solo/opening was by Fred Lonberg-Holm.
  Mon. 2/23/15 12:14pm Dean:

Heard these guys at Victo in 1999, the performance released as "Stone/Water."
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 2/23/15 12:14pm Uncle Michael:

So you're saying that being waterboarded is at least a bit more interesting.
Avatar Mon. 2/23/15 12:19pm Jeff Golick:

Hi, @Dean. That must've been some show. The recording is great.

@UM: I think that pretty much sums it up.
Avatar Mon. 2/23/15 12:20pm Jeff Golick:

@UM: Are you coming out East for the marathon?
  Mon. 2/23/15 12:21pm Dean:

There's a killer moment with Lonberg-Holm, Kent Kessler, and William Parker on "Short Visit to Nowhere." Good vibrations.

Yeah, it was an impressive show. I recall most vividly Toshinori Kondo bent over like Miles, spewing and sputtering synth-treated noises from his horn.
  Mon. 2/23/15 12:24pm Dean:

Also heard Lonberg-Holm with Vandermark at the Empty Bottle last time I was in Chicago, c. 2000. Heading there again at the end of March. Staying one block from Jazz Record Mart. Can't wait (for the Jazz Record Mart part of the stay)!
Avatar Mon. 2/23/15 12:25pm Jeff Golick:

Start saving now, @Dean! If any Chicagoians are lurking, Lonberg-Holm is playing with Lotte Anker tomorrow night at Corbett vs Dempsey. Free show, 6:30pm.
  Mon. 2/23/15 12:28pm Dean:

Please do provide tips for shows and venues, nights of March 25-27! Is CvD at a fixed location? Regular shows?
Avatar Mon. 2/23/15 12:29pm Jeff Golick:

Fixed location -- it's also (and primarily, I think) a gallery -- but irregular shows.
Avatar Mon. 2/23/15 12:30pm Jeff J:

Dean - sounds like it'll be a great trip! Jealous you got to see the Tentet. I've Brotz a few times, but never in such a large setting.
  Mon. 2/23/15 12:34pm Dean:

The best Brotzmann show I've heard was right here in Berkeley at a now defunct space, Jazz House, with the Full Blast trio. Holy criminy, what a din. Heard Susie Ibarra there, too, Fred Frith, and Maybe Monday.

Will look up CvD.
Avatar Mon. 2/23/15 12:35pm Patti Arkette:

Equal *play* for women! [hear here!]
Avatar Mon. 2/23/15 12:36pm listener james from westwood:

the movie drop-ins always crack me up!
Avatar Mon. 2/23/15 12:37pm Jeff Golick:

Hey, @Patti! Welcome. We'll hopefully have time at the end for an Ark member or two.
Avatar Mon. 2/23/15 12:37pm Jeff Golick:

I'm always on the lookout, @ljfw. Name that TV show?
Avatar Mon. 2/23/15 12:42pm Jeff Golick:

This astonishingly great group is Hemingway with: – Michael Moore, reeds; Mark Dresser, bass; Ernst Reijseger, cello; Wolter Wierbos, trombone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 2/23/15 12:43pm coelacanth:

hi Jeff
- a very rare listening as you're creating it...and today too i have some running around to do.
...'diggin' the archives though.
Avatar Mon. 2/23/15 12:43pm Patti Arkette:

Don't know what I was thinking in my speech last night. In a free form economy, people can pay whatever wages they feel like. ;) [c.f. wfmu.org... and a different JG's attitude]
Avatar Mon. 2/23/15 12:45pm Jeff Golick:

Glad to have you aboard, @coelacanth!
  Mon. 2/23/15 12:46pm Dean:

Hate to rub it in, but during the 1998 Victo festival Hemingway's quartet played with Clusone Trio. Both groups played separately, too.
  Mon. 2/23/15 12:47pm tr`sh:

In the domain of jazz, I revisit this personal experience: I'd never heard of Alice Coltrane. For a long time I'd never heard of her. And then finding a far longer term preference for her music.
Avatar Mon. 2/23/15 12:47pm Jeff J:

Hey Patti and Coelacanth - glad to have you both with us.
Avatar Mon. 2/23/15 12:48pm Patti Arkette:

@tr`sh: I was introduced to Mary Halvorsen [hear here!]
Avatar Mon. 2/23/15 12:49pm Patti Arkette:

* HalversOn, as it turns out, but then I don't even know how to spell my own name.
Avatar Mon. 2/23/15 12:58pm listener james from westwood:

@Jeff: I am the wrong one to guess on the TV show; I watch so little! But I did recognize the Parks & Rec one you've played now and again.
Avatar Mon. 2/23/15 12:59pm kat330:

Wonder what Peter Brötzmann had against "Dectet"? Some beef with Decca Records? 'Course Oktet would have been nice for the Okka label.
  Mon. 2/23/15 1:01pm tr`sh:

Maybe some kinda tenet of tentets.
Avatar Mon. 2/23/15 1:02pm kat330:

An oktopi of tentacles. Mollusk!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 2/23/15 1:03pm doca:

Squid + jazz reminds me of this img2.wikia.nocookie.net...
Avatar Mon. 2/23/15 1:06pm Jeff Golick:

Squidward! Which reminds me of a scene in the show 30 Rock, where the NBC page Kenneth, who, on just getting cable TV for the first time, asks NBC head Jack Donaghy, "Is SpongeBob Squarepants supposed to be terrifying?" To which Jack replies, "You're darn right he is."
Avatar Mon. 2/23/15 1:07pm Jeff J:

Nice pic, doca!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 2/23/15 1:07pm northguineahills:

oktet, I like that, never thought of that.
Avatar Mon. 2/23/15 1:09pm Jeff Golick:

Yes, my daughter *has* been mainlining 30 Rock recently, why do you ask?

Hi there, @northguineahills!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 2/23/15 1:09pm doca:

Hahah there's that moment where Patrick tells SpongeBob that one of the things he must do to become a real man is to start listening to "free form jazz". It could be a nice insert on the show
Avatar Mon. 2/23/15 1:11pm Jeff Golick:

Ah, sweet. Thanks, @doca!
Avatar Mon. 2/23/15 1:11pm kat330:

Have never the Sponge of the Non-round Pants. Is it actually entertaining for adults/
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 2/23/15 1:12pm doca:

Yeah I always think SpongeBob is funnier for adults than to children
Avatar Mon. 2/23/15 1:15pm kat330:

Klearly I kant type this morning -- Oskar fever from overlong, overhang hangover. [not really. watched the last hour+ on DVR this a.m.]
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 2/23/15 1:15pm Uncle Michael:

D:O is kind of a musical Bar Mitzvah.
Avatar Mon. 2/23/15 1:16pm Doug Schulkind:

This show has got a Lotte Anker issues to work out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 2/23/15 1:17pm doca:

@Doug: LOL
Avatar Mon. 2/23/15 1:17pm kat330:

As opposed to a Bat Mitzvah, indeed.
@Doug: So does NBC
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 2/23/15 1:25pm Uncle Michael:

It's also a kind of a mikveh, if that helps.
Avatar Mon. 2/23/15 1:26pm Jeff Golick:

Or the plural, bnai mitzvah.

Uncle Michael, you can just make the checks out to "Jeff."
Avatar Mon. 2/23/15 1:27pm kat330:

@UM: What did I hear, sorta sideways, about some rabbi photographing women in the ritual bath? Yikes and creeepeeeesh.
Avatar Mon. 2/23/15 1:32pm Jeff Golick:

On the flip, here's a woman (Japanese born, fwiw) who took photos of Brooklyn hasidim: www.bklynlibrary.org...
Avatar Mon. 2/23/15 1:48pm Jeff Golick:

This Human Arts Ensemble band was a real who's who of St. Louis talent: James Marshall, Marty Ehrlich, Oliver Lake, Butch Smith, J.D. Parran, Vincent Terrell, Charles Bobo Shaw, Jr., Kwame Graham, Abdallah Yakub, Alan Suits, Victor Reef, and Lester Bowie!
  Mon. 2/23/15 1:49pm tr`sh:

I've been watching a kestrel in hunt-mode out my window. Kestrels are relatively small birds of prey that dine on sparrows. Not unlike this music, this view.
Avatar Mon. 2/23/15 1:49pm kat330:

Philo and I are expecting visitors from your island's UWS this weekend. They sure picked a fine weekend to see Indy-yucky for the first time.
Avatar Mon. 2/23/15 1:49pm listener james from westwood:

With Hector Salamanca on front-desk bell.
Avatar Mon. 2/23/15 1:49pm Jeff Golick:

Also: "Recorded in July 1973 in St. Louis, Missouri under the sun. Produced by the Committee for Universal Justice."
  Mon. 2/23/15 1:49pm Dean:

Completely OT, but being a huge Joe Brainard fan I can't let this go unrecommended: http://ronsilliman.blogspot.com/2015/02/blog-post_21.html

Click on the "I" in "I Remember" for a PDF excerpt of Brainard's remarkable poem. Always bring a smile.
Avatar Mon. 2/23/15 1:50pm listener james from westwood:

tr`sh: The "alley" outside my window (trees, then a fence) occasionally hosts a passing sharp-shinned hawk. Twice it's had fresh prey. Lots to be had around here.
Avatar Mon. 2/23/15 1:50pm kat330:

@tr`sh: Here's a fine fellow in our backyard from a few years ago: jtlindroos.tumblr.com...
Avatar Mon. 2/23/15 1:51pm glenn:

mmmmmmm. sparrow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 2/23/15 1:52pm doca:

@Jeff G: There's a book about St. Louis' Black Artists Group. Have you read it?
Avatar Mon. 2/23/15 1:53pm Jeff Golick:

@doca: No, but I've seen tell of it. Have you? Would love to, but tbh never officially finished the AACM book (yet).
Avatar Mon. 2/23/15 1:53pm Jeff J:

Dean - I love Joe Brainard! The Library of America put out a beautiful collected works hardcover a few years back. It has lots of rare material in it, plus "I Remember" - worth purchasing.
Avatar Mon. 2/23/15 1:53pm kat330:

Thanks, Dean.
Avatar Mon. 2/23/15 1:54pm Jeff Golick:

Thanks, @Dean, for the Brainard!

Not so OT: I'm starving and there's no food here.
  Mon. 2/23/15 1:54pm tr`sh:

I don't get why they don't go for the pigeons.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 2/23/15 1:54pm doca:

@Jeff G: That AACM book is polemical around here, though I liked it a lot (but I'm a wannabe acholar). I've never read the BAG book, I was wondering if you did. I don't know if it's in the same vein as George Lewis' book or not.
Avatar Mon. 2/23/15 1:54pm Jeff J:

Lovely hawk photo, Kat330.
Avatar Mon. 2/23/15 1:55pm kat330:

@glenn: On another occasion, an uproar of bird squawking had me run to our kitchen window, just in time to see a hawk make off with a baby robin. :/
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 2/23/15 1:56pm coelacanth:

his riff reminds me of some tv show theme from decades ago. -a sitcom.
Avatar Mon. 2/23/15 1:56pm Jeff Golick:

Inching my way through Andrew Durkin's DECOMPOSITION now. Began life as a thesis, and it kinda shows.
Avatar Mon. 2/23/15 1:56pm kat330:

@Jeff J: Thanks on behalf of my other half that be.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 2/23/15 1:58pm doca:

@Jeff G: It sure seems, but there's jargon and jargon
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 2/23/15 1:58pm coelacanth:

("This riff")
...Thanks Jeff (s)!
Avatar Mon. 2/23/15 1:58pm kat330:

With Birdman being the big winner last night, guess the Zeitgeist demanded talk turning to birds.
Avatar Mon. 2/23/15 1:58pm glenn:

pigeons are too big.
Avatar Mon. 2/23/15 1:59pm glenn:

it's a bird eat bird world.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 2/23/15 1:59pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks, Jeffs. The Czech's in the mail.
Avatar Mon. 2/23/15 1:59pm kat330:

We don't have any pigeons around here. Doves, yes, and bunnies, and opossums, and tons of squirrels and field mice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 2/23/15 1:59pm northguineahills:

Thanks Jeffs, that was a lot of fun!
Avatar Mon. 2/23/15 2:00pm listener james from westwood:

Aw, man, that is a cruelly early end theme. Fabbo cuts today, Jeff and Jeff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 2/23/15 2:00pm doca:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 2/23/15 2:01pm Stanley:
