This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Oberlin has had a gamelan ensemble since 1971 when it purchased a full set of slendro instruments. The Univ. of Pittsburgh also has a gamelan ensemble. it is taught by Andrew Weintraub, who is a good pal with Henk of the Madrotter blog! Small world.

We *all* say "Chee-co." The Marx's say "Chick-o."
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/19/15 8:08pm doca:

@glenn: Yeah I'm amazed by how winter seems to get more intense over there the more February goes on. Over here weather is starting to make sense again, being just warm and not irrationally hot as it was during January.
Avatar Thu. 2/19/15 8:10pm Flash Strap:

I can't even wrap my head around that Chicko nonsense, even though I've known for years
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/19/15 8:10pm doca:

Avatar    Thu. 2/19/15 8:16pm listener james from westwood:

@Flash: Not only that w/ Chick-o, but Groucho had an on-stage German accent until WWI; his character was apparently a German schoolmaster/professor before he switched (reverted?) to his shnorer/wiseacre voice and persona.
Avatar Thu. 2/19/15 8:18pm Flash Strap:

They really are an incredible comedy organism, bridging centuries of comic style. The thing that bugs me out is that they all insist Zeppo was the funniest of the bunch.

What are you guys' favorite Marx films?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/19/15 8:19pm Uncle Michael:

"The thing that bugs me out is that they all insist Zeppo was the funniest of the bunch."

They might be joking!
Avatar    Thu. 2/19/15 8:19pm listener james from westwood:

Duck Soup. Followed closely by Night at the Opera.

There are few things as liberating as dressing as Groucho Marx for Halloween at your workplace and wising off at all your coworkers in voice and in character for the whole day.
Avatar Thu. 2/19/15 8:20pm Flash Strap:

They aren't; but I still don't buy it.
@james: those are my next two as well. but Races is #1
Avatar Thu. 2/19/15 8:20pm Doug Schulkind:

I hear that every word from Groucho was scripted. Not a moment of spontaneous improvisation crossed his lips.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/19/15 8:22pm Uncle Michael:

Having watched a LOT of "You Bet Your Life," I can only believe every word in film was scripted because they were good at honed craft, not because they weren't funny off the cuff.
Avatar    Thu. 2/19/15 8:22pm listener james from westwood:

That's def. a close #3. It's easier just to make a day of them and watch a bunch.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/19/15 8:23pm Uncle Michael:

That'sa some joke, eh boss?
Avatar    Thu. 2/19/15 8:24pm hyde:

I'm with ljfw. Those are my two faves, followed by Horse Feathers.
Avatar Thu. 2/19/15 8:24pm Flash Strap:

Uncle Michael: That's exactly my thoughts. You guys ever hear that story about the Marxes locking themselves in a producer's office, and when he broke through the door he found them all naked, baking potatoes in his fireplace?
Avatar Thu. 2/19/15 8:25pm Flash Strap:

Afterwards, he finally agreed to make a deal with them. He impressed at the chutzpah
Avatar Thu. 2/19/15 8:26pm Flash Strap:

Avatar Thu. 2/19/15 8:40pm Flash Strap:

Just watched the one with Lucille Ball, Room Service. Not the best, but pretty fun. She's such a babe in it.
Avatar Thu. 2/19/15 8:41pm Flash Strap:

Oh shit this track is too good! !!!!!!
Avatar    Thu. 2/19/15 8:41pm hyde:

I watched a Henry Hathaway noir (The Dark Corner) witha young Lucille Ball in it not too long ago
Avatar Thu. 2/19/15 8:42pm Flash Strap:

ooh. How was it?
Avatar    Thu. 2/19/15 8:44pm hyde:

pretty solid. has a great cast + Lucille Ball is really good in it.
Avatar Thu. 2/19/15 8:45pm Doug Schulkind:

I've asked my dog to hold it in for 15 more minutes. A she seems up to it.
Avatar Thu. 2/19/15 8:45pm Flash Strap:

On a related noir note, I just watched Night of the Hunter yesterday. I'd never seen it! It's astounding, truly genius.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/19/15 8:46pm Uncle Michael:

I'll take the young Kitty Carlisle.
Avatar    Thu. 2/19/15 8:47pm hyde:

@Flash Strap oh, wow. that movie is amazing. I can't believe it's the only film Charles Laughton ever directed, because it is genius.
Avatar Thu. 2/19/15 8:50pm Flash Strap:

I love Laughton as an actor, particularly in Island of Lost Souls, but I can hardly bear it that he never directed another film. It makes me want to watch African Queen, though, as it shares a screenwriter with Night of the Hunter: James Agee
Avatar    Thu. 2/19/15 8:56pm hyde:

I always think of Laughton mainly as Captain Bligh. But he's so wide ranging--I just recently saw this odd 40's melodrama he's in with Carole Lombard called They Knew What They Wanted where he plays an italian immigrant farmer and he was so, so great. It was the part he took after playing Quasimodo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/19/15 8:58pm Uncle Michael:

Was he ever bad?
Avatar Thu. 2/19/15 8:59pm Flash Strap:

I know a lot of people regard him mainly as a scenery chewer, but even at his slumming lowest there's a twinkle of the revelatory. I don't think he was capable of being bad.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/19/15 9:00pm Uncle Michael:

I think he did pathos better than any British film star, trained on the stage, of his generation.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/19/15 9:01pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks for the show, Flash.
Avatar    Thu. 2/19/15 9:01pm hyde:

right, he's sometimes over the top but not really ever bad. and I agree about the pathos, UM. That's what he does in spades in that Lombard movie.

Thanks Flash!
Avatar    Thu. 2/19/15 9:02pm listener james from westwood:

I'll just be sitting here, trying to imagine what a third hour of this episode would sound like, and realizing it could never measure up to what Flash would craft. Thanks, man!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/19/15 9:03pm Uncle Michael:

Night everyone.
Avatar Thu. 2/19/15 9:05pm Flash Strap:

Thanks for listening everyone! Good night friends and Laughton-lovers! Good night, Harpo, Chico, and Groucho! Good night, Doug's dog!
Avatar Thu. 2/19/15 9:06pm Doug Schulkind:

Woof!

Hey everyone, get some sleep. We all convene back here in 11 hours and 54 minutes!
Avatar Thu. 2/19/15 9:07pm Flash Strap:

Rest up for the main event! See you there Doug!
  Thu. 2/19/15 11:56pm Henk Madrotter:

Very interesting playlist, will enjoy listening to this! I was in Bali last week, forget about the REAL Balinese music, all you see and hear nowadays is the waterdowned tourist kecak stuff and the endless suply of these horrible spa/lounge/new age "Balinese" cd's, also for the tourists. Still, there's still some awesome music being made in the villages.... For me, West-Java is where it's at, there the traditional music is still going strong, jaipong, bajidor, ketuk tilu, kuda lumping, kliningan, tarling, tayuban, tarawangsa, all amazing stuff and i just got a call from somebody, I'll be picking up around a 100 rare cassettes today, YEAH!
  Fri. 2/20/15 12:28am Henk Madrotter:

Reminds me, I should upload some of percussionist Vidal Paz' (aka Django Mango) work, he's a Spanish guy who got very rich very early in life, then said F it and spend the rest of his life traveling and playing and recording music, he put out loads of cd's where he mixes Balinese and Sundanese music, a wonderfull cd where he mixes Sundanese percussion with Maroccan throat singerss and a whole bunch of cd's where he plays with all these Cuban jazz greats.... Great stuff! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8zP7YvtqB4M
