Probably not Mark's. I knew Mark and his brother when they were suburban punks, late '70s. A friend gave me his first publication, a collection of clever line drawings. They did not presage the weird stuff for which he became infamous.

Hi, I'm french, and I wanted to thank you guys from all the over the world for your support and attention ! I must admit I didn't really like much Charlie Hebdo originally for various reasons, but I am shocked and saddened that they died just for writing and drawing their opinions... Anyway, thank you for the good music and support (and btw, that jac berrocal's stuff was quite nice) !

Steve I tried Gravity's Rainbow but couldn't get through it. I thought Inherit Vice would help but it's nothing like it. It's pretty straightforward.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 1/8/15 4:37pm steve:

haha same here KP. i just finished Bleeding Edge, which was excellent, had a lot to keep track of but overall easy to follow. Gravity's Rainbow is on my otherwise pretty thin shelf of books which i couldn't finish!

A Gravity's Rainbow Companion: Sources and Contexts for Pynchon's Novel
by Steven Weisenburger
Avatar Thu. 1/8/15 4:39pm YETI BOB:

i would not have made it through GR without Weisenburger's help. it's totally worth it though.
Avatar Thu. 1/8/15 4:39pm Fuzzy:

Make it about halfway through Gravity's Rainbow. Managed to get through Infinite Jest, though -- no small feat!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 1/8/15 4:39pm adrian in mpls:

I always recommend The Crying of Lot 49 - very short, very engaging narrative. If you have a spare day, you can easily read it all the way through. And then want to re-read it again.
Avatar Thu. 1/8/15 4:39pm Fuzzy:

Made, rather...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/8/15 4:40pm common:

couldn't get through gr. i wanna sometime. @adrain: same here
Avatar Thu. 1/8/15 4:41pm YETI BOB:

Infinite Jest, Gravity's Rainbow, and "Life: A User's Manual' are 3 of my favorite books. On my "Couldn't get through it" shelf sit Jacques Roubaud, Robert Musil and Mark Danielewski
Avatar Thu. 1/8/15 4:43pm YETI BOB:

(I don't think Danielewski really wanted people to read House of Leaves, though, so I don't feel bad for abandoning it. "Great Fire of London" and "The Man Without Qualities" really demand to be read, though. One of these days...)
Avatar Thu. 1/8/15 4:45pm Fuzzy:

Tried and failed to read Cryptonomicon again recently. The internet has drastically altered my reading habits!
  Thu. 1/8/15 4:46pm Dean:

I couldn't sit through a reading by the author of passages from "House of Leaves."

Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/8/15 4:54pm northguineahills:

My WFMU page is rather wonky, I tried twice to answer bmw's question and it errored out each time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 1/8/15 4:54pm adrian in mpls:

@Fuzzy - it's the same for me. I'm trying to develop a practice of reading again, and I find the type of slow, deep reading that I used to do has been replaced by a quick-skim reflex from only reading the internets the last couple of years. I find myself re-reading paragraphs frequently.
Avatar    Thu. 1/8/15 4:56pm SeanG:

same here Fuzzy and Adrian :-) --lately all I do is read these comments
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/8/15 4:57pm Cecile:

it's also a function of age, I'm sorry to say.

My ADD has gotten so bad that I can't remember the last time I read a non graphic design, non-biography or Shopaholic (shut up) book all the way through. I just try to glean what I can and keep at it, but it usually doesn't end that well.
  Thu. 1/8/15 4:59pm bmw primadonna:
