A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Loretta Lynn carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

wow. nice paintin' |
![]() |
![]() phew first fire put out, appropriate given this painting by fortunato depero: an italian futurist who was prolific in his creativity. look him up. he designed sets, ballet outfits, furniture, glassware, in addition to painting. |

Trouble Goodmorning! I attended the free jazz showing at the Patterson Free Library and it was FAN-FREAKIN-TASTIC. Thanks for the heads up! Have a show!

![]() I used to be a past-ist but I am now a born-again futurist. Morning, Trouble, and troubles big and small, past, present and future, wherever you may be. |

![]() Futurism tended towards unfortunate SocioPolitical Ideals or Movements - no? But it would've been impossible for Art to not react to the new sensations of the 20thCentury w/ enthusiasm by somebody. - I'm always on about Rawk Subcultures being African-American Rhythm & Blues - plus some European Art Movement : - Psychedelia =s Surrealism + R&B - Punk =s DaDA + R&B ...& Mod =s Futurism & R&B (or maybe PopArt) - Rawk, after all, has been a vehicle for every sort of SocioPolitical affiliation (Punk alone!) - & generally in line w/ Futurist ideas about Youth & even Violence (...shades of previous weeks consideration of Juvenalia & Rebellion complexes...) Even w/in Futurism - there are distinct Aesthetic groups? Yes?Some are more like Abstraction, or Expressionism - & some are more - urm - PopArtish? Poster-like...or something ?? I thot I liked the lattter, & was a little surprised to find the Former... |

DJ TRUBZ in the building!
![]() |
![]() - okay: what is that plaintive two-note birdsong right there - ? I have thot it was the Chickadee - but I'm starting to wonder... |
![]() |
Tue. 10/28/14 9:36am
d¢ pät:
if you need reactions to 20th century I think your best bet is the dadaists... the pro-war bullshit is what turned me off the futurists. |
![]() |
![]() @dc pat - i feel the same way about the futurists. their alignment with fascism was, to put it lightly, highly problematic |
![]() |
![]() - okay yeah - chickadees got a few they do : www.birdjam.com... - zactly dc pat ; dAda reacted against the ModernWorld & WWI - & the Futurists got all into it...How that found echoes or parallels in Rawk SubCultures is a problem for my own thesis... |
![]() |
![]() - & it's maybe a little like the question of what exactly Shostakovich's intentions under Stalin's gaze were... |
![]() |
![]() You melt my heart with Melodia... |
![]() |
![]() At the moment, I am an ardent Brazil-ist. |
![]() |
Tue. 10/28/14 9:46am
d¢ pät:
brings up the age-old problem of separating the art from the artist. For example, I really dig Celine. His books to me are in line with what the dadaists were all about. But turns out, he was a Nazi apologist. Jerk. |
![]() |
Tue. 10/28/14 9:47am
d¢ pät:
Shostakovich was sneaky though--his true intentions came out in the string quartets. |
![]() |
![]() ...we could of course just Blame it on the Bossaa Nova ...also: I think I conflated the Russian Constructivists w/ Futurism (is what I was getting @) - 'cause I like that stuff... |
![]() |
![]() ugh.. where are my dancin' shoes.. |
![]() |
Tue. 10/28/14 9:51am
d¢ pät:
I can see that. |
![]() |
![]() @dc pat You wonder how much of the politics comes through in the works. I have been reading a little bit of Heidegger lately. He was brilliant, but a Nazi asshole. You start to wonder how that affects what he was trying to say. |
![]() |
![]() i guess i usually tend to think that one's politics tends to find representation in one's art -- even if it comes out in unconscious ways... |

This Joe Bataan track is the JAM. |
![]() |
Tue. 10/28/14 9:54am
d¢ pät:
sometimes it just doesn't make sense though--Celine is a perfect example. One of the first honest, horrifying descriptions of modern war--you'd think he'd be a hippie. But no. |
![]() |
![]() - yeah - Wyatt to Bataan was pretty sly !... |

paula pc:
why are people ragging on this record? I like it!!!
![]() |
![]() @dc pat - i see what yr saying. and people's politics are riddled with contradictions, change with time, etc. and i haven't read enough celine to know how his views on race, colonialism and anti-semitism affect his work. |
![]() |
Tue. 10/28/14 10:06am
d¢ pät:
that's part of it: changing views. maybe you could find some hints of his political views in his work but I, for one, was surprised that some one who was apparently so appalled at how human nature manifested itself in modern warfare could possible support fascism. |
![]() |
![]() Those new Prince albums are just great |

i know i've mentioned it before, but i like to brag. the guitarist for third eye girl lives in my neighbourhood. |
![]() |
![]() Intelligent people whose Politics weird you out is ...a Thing. ...Thing about Prince is - he *could* do anything. So you wonder what he's bothering w/ & what he's really about. Like Nick Cave is as good a Writer who ever bothered w/ Rawk - so - what is he *on about* - ?!?... |

I think that's a later, generic impression of hippies after they entered the common consciousness. In any case, they had cooler glasses.

![]() Yeah, I know, @Brian, but it was just a way to show my appreciation for her whole live set. I know it may be annoying, but I think it's important to remind artists who appear on WFMU that people on the bottom half of the world are listening to them too. |
