Avatar Tue. 10/21/14 11:54am Tony Coulter:

Today's show will be freeform-with-a-theme. Nothing but 7" records, but all over the place stylistically.

Howdy, Tony, and all Singles Going Drummy!

Hola, Uncle M!
  Tue. 10/21/14 12:05pm Dean:

I'm married. Does this mean I can't listen to WFMU for the entire week?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/21/14 12:05pm Carmichael:

Tony! You'll be hard at work this morning, spinning and flinging.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 10/21/14 12:06pm Andrew Waterloo:

@Dead, nah, it just means you have a lot more explaining to do.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 10/21/14 12:07pm DCE:

he's not dead yet...
  Tue. 10/21/14 12:07pm Dean:

"But darling, I swear, I didn't give the drummer any!"
Avatar Tue. 10/21/14 12:08pm Tony Coulter:

Hey ho, Carmichael!
  Tue. 10/21/14 12:08pm Dean:

Not dead yet, no, but my nom de plume when I wrote for Flipside was Dean Ded.
Avatar    Tue. 10/21/14 12:09pm Jeff Golick:

This is funking bananas in the best possible way.
  Tue. 10/21/14 12:09pm Dean:

Really, it was a nom de machine à écrire.

'fear is the mind-killer'
Avatar Tue. 10/21/14 12:32pm Tony Coulter:

Hey all, need some pledges coming in today! Do it for station, stream, and singles!
Avatar Tue. 10/21/14 12:35pm Tony Coulter:

The Gist is a Young Marble Giants offshoot...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/21/14 12:35pm Carmichael:

I get the gist of it.
  Tue. 10/21/14 12:36pm Dean:

YMG! They opened for Cabaret Voltaire way back when in LA.
Avatar Tue. 10/21/14 12:36pm still b/p:

7" record sez: "Do not be deceived by my size!"
Avatar Tue. 10/21/14 12:37pm Tony Coulter:

Heya, b/p. Glad to see you're still b/p-ing it!
Avatar Tue. 10/21/14 12:39pm Tony Coulter:

Here's an upbeat little number for ya. If this doesn't get you to pledge, nothing will.
  Tue. 10/21/14 12:40pm Dean:

And if nothing will, then 4'33" ought to generate a windfall.
Avatar Tue. 10/21/14 12:43pm still b/p:

I'm sure there's a trovey ol' trove of stories similar to this: When I saw a performance of 4'33" a couple of years ago, at least one person in the audience thought the somewhat senior pianist might be having a medical or cognitive difficulty.
Avatar Tue. 10/21/14 12:46pm Tony Coulter:

Could one call this vocalist Arto Lindsay-esque?
Avatar Tue. 10/21/14 12:48pm Tony Coulter:

All rise for his honor, the mayor.
Avatar Tue. 10/21/14 12:50pm still b/p:

He went to the same Spanish language/accent coach as Nat King Cole.
  Tue. 10/21/14 12:54pm Dean:

Okay, I pledged last week, but I tossed coins in the bucket just now to advance the yellow ribbon. C'mon, folks. Pony (or dog or cow) up!
Avatar Tue. 10/21/14 12:55pm Tony Coulter:

HUGE THANKS, Dean!!! Three cheers for DEAN!!
Avatar Tue. 10/21/14 1:00pm Tony Coulter:

One sure way to escape a horrible, painful death in the jaws of the CREATURE is to pledge. For some unknown reason, the CREATURE isn't fond of the taste of pledgers.
Avatar Tue. 10/21/14 1:04pm northguineahills:

No 8"s allowed!
Avatar    Tue. 10/21/14 1:05pm holland oats:

Greasy greets, NGH and Holland O!
Avatar Tue. 10/21/14 1:09pm Tony Coulter:

@ NGH: I wouldn't touch your comment with an 8" pole.
Avatar    Tue. 10/21/14 1:11pm listener james from westwood:

Avatar Tue. 10/21/14 1:11pm Doug Schulkind:

$143 from 100% !!
  Tue. 10/21/14 1:13pm Dean:

-$107 from 50%!
Avatar Tue. 10/21/14 1:18pm Tony Coulter:

I can only imagine the complicated math when we go beyond 100%. PLEDGE-O!! PLEDGE-O!!
Avatar Tue. 10/21/14 1:22pm Tony Coulter:

Johanna Went was sort of like a new wave performance art Peter Gabriel. She wore some unique costumes, to say the least.
Avatar Tue. 10/21/14 1:23pm Tony Coulter:

Case in point: www.youtube.com...
Avatar Tue. 10/21/14 1:25pm Doug Schulkind:

That hurt my mind, Dean.
  Tue. 10/21/14 1:27pm Dean:

A mind is a terrible thing.
  Tue. 10/21/14 1:29pm Dean:

Is this Rumsfield's band before he joined the Known Unknowns?
Avatar Tue. 10/21/14 1:29pm Tony Coulter:

The Known Unknowns are unknown to me.
Avatar    Tue. 10/21/14 1:29pm listener james from westwood:

You hit the stage with the band name you have, not the band name you want.
  Tue. 10/21/14 1:30pm Dean:

Rumsfeld, I meant, orificely.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/21/14 1:30pm Brian in UK:

@Dean this was after The Indispensible Numb Nuts of which he never left.
Avatar Tue. 10/21/14 1:32pm still b/p:

Great Johanna clip. All we need to know is cleanly stated in a piece I read about the just-deceased Oscar de la Renta, which included an interview with a fashion critic:
"the designer understood something very fundamental about women, no matter their age or background.' They want to look pretty,' Givhan says."
  Tue. 10/21/14 1:33pm Dean:

...and witty and gay.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/21/14 1:33pm Brian in UK:

@still b/p that applied to a lot of bands in the 80s.
Avatar Tue. 10/21/14 1:35pm Tony Coulter:

Greets, Brian in UK!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/21/14 1:36pm Brian in UK:

Apologies Tony. Good day, Sir. Admirable work thus far.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 10/21/14 1:36pm DCE:

this guy sounds very ston'd
Avatar Tue. 10/21/14 1:38pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, it's like a morgue around here, pledge-wise. I hope the CREATURE didn't eat up everyone who was planning to pledge.

It's time to SQUEAK!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/21/14 1:38pm doca:

Hey, Tony Coulter and the GTD gang!
Avatar Tue. 10/21/14 1:39pm Tony Coulter:

Heya, doca!!
Avatar Tue. 10/21/14 1:39pm still b/p:

Yes, Brian, bunch of 'em coulda mixed and matched as The Tell Me I'm Pretty Collective.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/21/14 1:40pm Brian in UK:

You bet, is that when hair dye started going berserk?
Avatar Tue. 10/21/14 1:44pm V Priceless:

I hear some Queen in the melody of that Bombers track
Avatar Tue. 10/21/14 1:44pm Tony Coulter:

Some Bowie too, I'd say.
Avatar    Tue. 10/21/14 1:45pm holland oats:

THX MAN!
Avatar Tue. 10/21/14 1:46pm V Priceless:

@ Tony - yep, even their name could be Bowie-inspired!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/21/14 1:47pm Jesse K:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/21/14 1:47pm doca:

Just catching up here... This album called The Unknown Knowns is recommended: www.discogs.com...
Avatar Tue. 10/21/14 2:02pm northguineahills:

The Parasites of the Western World sound 5-8 years ahead of their time.
Avatar Tue. 10/21/14 2:03pm Tony Coulter:

The Parasites, on now, were a Portland group. I've a got a demo tape of theirs that I'll play on "Tape Hiss" one of these days....
Avatar Tue. 10/21/14 2:10pm Tony Coulter:

UH OH -- less than an hour left! We've really gotta shake some PLEDGE action around here. Show your support of station and stream!! Any little bit helps!!
Avatar Tue. 10/21/14 2:10pm Rich in Washington:

Fabo show, Tony!
Been unable to comment till now but listening in the shadows...
Avatar Tue. 10/21/14 2:11pm Tony Coulter:

Heya, Shadow Rich!!
Avatar Tue. 10/21/14 2:12pm Shadow Rich:

A portland show would be cool, or NW environs, at least.
Avatar Tue. 10/21/14 2:13pm Tony Coulter:

Yeah, I think I will do just that eventually.

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 10/21/14 2:17pm DCE:

Avatar Tue. 10/21/14 2:18pm Tony Coulter:

There's a government conspiracy to stop people from hearing that single.
Avatar Tue. 10/21/14 2:19pm Tony Coulter:

"They try to hypnotize with those glaring eyes"...
Avatar Tue. 10/21/14 2:23pm dhoasw cirh:

I think there's always been a government/corporate conspiracy to keep people from hearing/seeing any kind of transcendent=transgressive art but in the last two decades they've shifted the tactic to flooding the infotainmentscape with way too many choices, many of them substandard, mediocre or banal in the extreme.
Avatar Tue. 10/21/14 2:24pm Tony Coulter:

I love the label name of this Ray Faubus single....
Avatar Tue. 10/21/14 2:25pm Rich in Washington:

How could a label go wrong with a name like that?
Avatar    Tue. 10/21/14 2:27pm Jeff Golick:

@Rich: I had a similar, if much less articulate response, on seeing an ad for Dumb and Dumber To [sic] drive by on top of a taxi this morning.
Avatar Tue. 10/21/14 2:27pm Tony Coulter:

The Psychopaths feature David Arvedon....

Avatar Tue. 10/21/14 2:35pm Tony Coulter:

ACK -- ONLY AROUND 25 MINUTES LEFT!! Really need some pledges coming in so this show can hold its head up high. Don't hate on the singles just because they're short.
Avatar Tue. 10/21/14 2:43pm V Priceless:

Avatar Tue. 10/21/14 2:44pm Tony Coulter:

GIVE THE DRUMMER RADIO PROGRAMMING ALERT...
Coming up this evening on the Drummer Stream, Give the Drummer Some (at 6pm ET) and Kaminsky Kamoutsky (at 7pm ET) will both be participating in WFMU's SINGLES GOING STEADY celebration.

And pledge pledge pledge yer arses off and get these Drummer Stream shows over the silent fundraising hump! TONY COULTER is a national treasure of the airwaves and deserves your support. If you haven't made a donation, click the ol' blue PLEDGE button and have at it. If you've already given, make another little small offering to keep that pledgometer moving toward the goal.

(In keeping with the silent fundraiser, I whispered the above comment.)
