Avatar 10:09pm
doca:

@Jake: Wow, didn't know those two. I'm 27 and Saint Seiya was on TV around here in 1994, so it was an important part of my upbringing. But it was the only anime series that I really followed (later came Shurato, Sailor Moon and Yu Yu Hakusho and I wasn't much into it). Some nice anime flicks are other thing, however.
  10:11pm
JakeGould:

Doca, I have about 2 decades on you. “Star Blazers” & “Battle of the Planets” are part of that magical sic-fi era of the 1970s where just tons of stuff came out of every place. And the Yen was weak compared to the dollar so tons of properties were licensed… Like the 1970s Godzilla films.
Avatar 10:14pm
doca:

@Jake: You've made me jealous now. And I thought I was fortunate to catch a glimpse of Jaspion, Jiban and some other bad-rated tokusatsu

  10:17pm
JakeGould:

@doca, well since I will give you some advice: “Battle of the Planets” is actually horrible because they edited down for kids. As a kid, it was fun for what it was. But as an adult it’s wince-worthy. But now there are dubbed and subtitled versions of the source show, “Ninja Science Team: Gatchaman.” It’s really great stuff. www.youtube.com...
Avatar 10:20pm
doca:

The animations are great, @Jake. Thanks.
  10:21pm
JakeGould:

You’re welcome! No problem. Also, watch this to see how badass & dark the original Japanase version was compared to what we saw in the U.S. youtu.be...
  10:22pm
P-90:

@ Doca: You're not missing much, those late-70's/early eighties anime suffered from really poor translations and re-editing to take out the "adult" themes that caused the storylines to be completely rearranged and mangled. But by then things like "Ranma" and "Lum Invader" were starting to appear on VHS well-captioned and uncensored.
  10:23pm
JakeGould:

And on Sun Ra, there’s a cool ephemera exhibit in NYC right now. www.davidnolangallery.com...

  10:25pm
JakeGould:

@P-90 Yeah, some of the translations & editing was horrible. But there was some great stuff and it was fun to hunt stuff down. 1990s anime was too… I don’t know… That’s not what I liked…
  10:26pm
P-90:

Jake: you beat me to it! Somewhere on Youtube there are also a couple of clips of Speed Racer" as edited/dubbed for American TV side by side with the captioned original, the difference is hilarious...
Avatar 10:27pm
doca:

@Jake/P-90: Yeah, I know this was often a problem, as in Speed Racer. There's also those issues with the first release of Miyazaki's Nausicaä for instance. I think maybe there was some of those anime-like TV shows that were in fact produced in the US, but I'm not very certain about it.
  10:27pm
Phillip.(Brooklyn):

Did someone mention "battle of the planets"??? Only my fav anime ever! Other than speed racer and star blazers

Me and some friend of mine are always arguing about the merits of Wachowski brother's Speed Racer movie. Our conclusion is that it is one of the greatest movies ever made (and I'm serious about it).
  10:34pm
JakeGould:

@P-90: But to me, “Speed Racer” is pretty faithful to the original. I know that some differences appear, but it’s well loved in the U.S. form for a reason.
