Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

And why the HELL don't I own "Paul's Boutique" after all these years? My fault entirely.
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 12:10pm pacific standard simon:

Five years ago, I stayed in a cabin at the Bailey Resort near the top of Palomar Mountain, where the observatory is. The cabin was entirely decorated with John Deere collectibles, much to the embarrassment of the lady who maintained the place (the decorating was done by her brother-in-law). I think she was secretly hoping the guests would steal all the toy tractors and such.
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 12:12pm Uncle Michael:

I think paul's Boutique is 25 years-old next month.

Been listening to the Radio Swing Worldwide webstream a lot, lately. Don't know why it makes me feel good, at this late date, but it does.
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 12:25pm northguineahills:

It's not that I don't pay attention to lyrics, I just don't hear them until about the 50th time listening to a song.
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 12:26pm listener james from westwood:

Pretty sure I'd be a more or less constant mess walking through the various battlefields of Europe. I can't even read the Gettysburg Address w.o misting up.

You can always do a 100th anniversary show for WWI come Fri, 8/1/14, altho' that might require an assist from MAC's trove of ancient recordings!
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 12:27pm Gary:

Yes, it makes me feel old, thanks for asking
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 12:28pm listener james from westwood:

"Ghostbusters" turns 30 this Sunday, too. Saw it in Washington DC on a class trip. Got mass-mugged the next day. Good times.
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 12:29pm Lizardner Dave:

So that means that the two vinyl copies of Paul's Boutique that I got for free at either CMJ or NMS and lost in Sandy were from the 1989 versions of those conventions. Huh, that means next year is 25 years since I graduated college. Well then.
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 12:29pm pacific standard simon:

James, he's been building up to that with the "Mademoiselle from Armentieres" covers...
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 12:31pm Parq:

I've gotten used to that 25-years thing. The current President of the U.S. is younger than me, and we just recently observed the 50th anniversary of the Beatles on Ed Sullivan

Gotta do a Ted Templeman tribute one day.
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 12:48pm Dominick:

Got nits? I'll pick! Gemini Childe is on The LP titled "The Papas and the Mamas"
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 12:51pm pacific standard simon:

Working on it! He doesn't spend that much time in the kitchen, but he's been there this week working on stuffed pretzels. Usually I just annoy my co-workers with Fiveash mic-breaks.
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 12:51pm pacific standard simon:

Nice. I feel like a randy new man.
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 12:59pm Uncle Michael:

I guess this one is appropriate to the day.
  Fri. 6/6/14 1:00pm Dean:

Indeed. And who also had a hit with "Muskrat Love," hmmm?
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 1:01pm Uncle Michael:

America. Who wrote it, smart guy?
  Fri. 6/6/14 1:02pm Dean:

Er...not cheating, not revving up a search engine...uhm...one of the eponymous muskrats?
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 1:03pm Uncle Michael:

Willis Alan Ramsey...and it's really good. From the only album he ever released.
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 1:03pm Uncle Michael:

I may have played it on HDT...I think I have.
  Fri. 6/6/14 1:03pm Dean:

Darn. That was going to be my second guess.
  Fri. 6/6/14 1:05pm Dean:

This ain't your daddy's Grand Funk Railroad.
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 1:06pm ndbob:

@UM Yep - called Muskrat Candlelight I think - oneof the rare rodent love recordings
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 1:06pm Uncle Michael:

Come on everybody...we're gonna have a good time...give me all the love that's in you. I'm a-gonna give you mine....
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 1:06pm still b/p:

While I was listening at the sink to Pocketful of Miracles, I was thinking there should be a term for that particular familiar period flavor of vocal/arrangements/studio style. And while Harper's Bizarre came to mind as characteristic practitioners, I didn't realize it was them. So now I know. 'Twas Ted. And for me, the style will be..."Ted." Learned at Hinky Diinky U.
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 1:07pm Uncle Michael:

still b/p, do you think the broader term "sunshine pop" encompasses it?
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 1:09pm Doug Schulkind:

Yay, Hamilton Bohannon, yay.
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 1:10pm Uncle Michael:

  Fri. 6/6/14 1:10pm Dean:

The pinnacle of latter day "sunshine pop": the Alessi Bros. I *dare* you to play, "It's All for a Reason"!
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 1:12pm Uncle Michael:

A dare? Really?
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 1:13pm listener james from westwood:

Do I hear Ewoks?
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 1:13pm Lewis:

how about 3 hours of Bohemian Rhapsody covers?
  Fri. 6/6/14 1:14pm Dean:

As DC5 was winding down, Charles Pierce at Esquire's Politics blog posted this re: Tom Hanks: "Also, is there anything [more] white than being chosen as the guy to induct The Dave Clark Five into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame?" (I'd say, yes. The Alessi Bros.)
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 1:14pm tikk:

I like the tone of that stormtrooper head being played with a bone.
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 1:16pm listener james from westwood:

How about the version of Yub Nub that includes the Threepio rap midstream?
@tikk: To quote Lenny in The Simpsons, "He's getting a pretty good sound outta that guy!"
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 1:17pm Uncle Michael:

He really is!
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 1:19pm Mike East:

Is it time for lunch yet?
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 1:20pm Uncle Michael:

It's fasting and prayer today, Mike.
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 1:23pm PMD:

I loved the Ewoks, btw. Maybe give the oompah loompahs some time.
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 1:24pm Uncle Michael:

They have another riddle for you.
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 1:26pm still b/p:

"Sunshine pop " is good 'n suitable, although sometimes the sentiments in those numbers veer toward the melodramatically wistful and poignant...partly cloudy. And "sunshine pop" also summons up for me at the same time a different kind of gratingly wispy, hollow, forced, simpering, unappealing Top 40 efforts.

Speaking of forced and hollow, I looked at 30 seconds of Having A Wild Weekend the other night and had to bail with a sneer. Maybe another try later, in a different frame of mimicry-patient mind.
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 1:29pm Uncle Michael:

I haven't seen it. I need to.
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 1:30pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 1:32pm Brian in UK:

@Lewis. Joe McGasko did it with Satisfaction.
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 1:33pm Lewis:

@Brian - very cool, will have to give it a listen Thanks!
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 1:34pm Uncle Michael:

hasn't Ken f done bohemian rhapsody?
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 1:34pm northguineahills:

I think Lewis is referring to the time Ken did 3 hours of Bohemian Rhapsody.

Halftime! hop and skipping over to Bryce. Thanks again, UM! Have a great weekend!
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 1:34pm tikk:

Sounds like a Schoolhouse Rock outtake
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 1:35pm Lewis:

yes - ken did it. It was joke that went bad and then couldn't be stopped. I was there!
  Fri. 6/6/14 1:36pm Dean:

That Nilsson box set is essential.
  Fri. 6/6/14 1:38pm Dean:

Wasn't Emanon that guy who was Slim Shady?
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 1:38pm ndbob:

I had never heard From Head to Toe until I heard the Motown Singles - never heard it when it was out
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 1:40pm Uncle Michael:

Me either, Bob. I have the Costello 45...a b-side.
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 1:41pm pacific standard simon:

UM, I'm happy to like you on FMU, but FB has to learn to live without me. At least you don't use an airhorn like that other guy... the guy who keeps trying to sing some "Ticket" song on every show. He sings like a drummer he's so flat... I think he's reached that magical age when his voice will drop.

When I was 17 (I am now 62) I bought, at a junk shop, an eight track tape of "The Johnny Otis Show featuring Skillet and Leroy with Lawanda" on the strength of knowing Johnny was Shuggie's father. I wish I still had it, but I wore it out.

It opened yet more aural horizons, especially Fred Sanford's in-laws.
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 2:33pm Uncle Michael:

Lawanda was a hottie!
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 2:33pm Doug Schulkind:

It probably really is "Sah-mahn-day," but my friend Moses is just about the coolest dude ever, and I can't imagine him being wrong about such a thing.

Doing this show is fun. have I mentioned that?
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 2:38pm efd:

I'm not going anywhere. Also, I hereby declare this Billy Thorpe record as being from the '70s even though it came out in 1980.
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 2:39pm scuzfink1:

I dunno. It took him forty years to go a few hundred miles. The one time he asked for directions he came back with commandments, for chrissake!
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 2:40pm Uncle Michael:

Those are very good points.
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 2:45pm Guido from Cologne:

Room set was cool not junk!
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 2:45pm KevinfromBayRidge:

Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 2:46pm Uncle Michael:

Who am I to argue? I ask you.
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 2:46pm efd:

ha, a classic!
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 2:46pm Mike East:

holy hell! City Boy! I literally just found out yesterday that I know the bass player from this group...he runs a rental company in LIC.
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 2:47pm Mike East:

we are picking up a split snake from him today.
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 2:47pm Uncle Michael:

that's pretty cool Mike. tell him he got some Hinky Dinky Time lovin'.
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 2:47pm Doug Schulkind:

The Give the Drummer Radio stream has its own Facebook page, too. If you like it, you will get program announcements for all shows on the stream: www.facebook.com...
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 2:48pm Mike East:

just emailed him :)
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 2:49pm efd:

Crazy, Mike! They were British, right?
Uncle Michael you've now joined a very small club, previously inhabited solely by John Allen and me.
  Fri. 6/6/14 2:49pm Dean:

Lake, the German band, would fit nicely here.
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 2:50pm Uncle Michael:

Good company!
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 2:50pm Uncle Michael:

grab something tightly.
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 2:52pm Mike East:

yes, efd. he's got a sweet accent. If you call them up, you get a message: "for the rental dept. press 1, etc" - its his voice on the recording.
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 2:52pm Uncle Michael:

Who's letting the air out of this record? Cut it out.
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 2:52pm Doug Schulkind:

I went through a Lucretia MacEvil phase. It lasted for about forever.
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 2:53pm Uncle Michael:

I love you, Doug.
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 2:54pm ndbob:

excellent show UM!
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 2:54pm listener james from westwood:

Where was this song back in March when I was in Vegas?!
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 2:55pm Lucretia MacEvil:

Love you too, UM.
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 2:55pm efd:

That's great, Mike. That single has been a fave since it came out. Over the years I've picked up a couple of their LPs but nothing grabbed me as much as ""
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 2:55pm Uncle Michael:

DCT/BS&T for live.
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 2:56pm Uncle Michael:

or life
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 2:56pm Mike East:

he sent me this link yesterday and commented on not being able to fit into the tight black leather outfit anymore
  Fri. 6/6/14 2:57pm Cal Zone!!:

Great set Unk Mike!
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 2:57pm efd:

oh snap, I see on the ol' Wikipedia that one of the guys from City Boy (not the bass player) went on to form The Maisonettes! I just played their single on my show a couple of weeks ago.
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 2:58pm Uncle Michael:

Thank you all for hanging out with me in my room...in my basement.
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 2:58pm Guido from Cologne:

ByeByeBye and ThaaanX sso mu ch 4 entertainment
  Fri. 6/6/14 2:59pm Len:

Beautiful show man!
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 2:59pm scuzfink1:

I used to be DCT's limo driver in the 80s. A talented fellow, but nowhere near so talented as he believed. That would have been humanly impossible. He liked me because I was fast and smooth and discreet. I never told him I considered his band not to have anything to do with the real BS&T.
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 2:59pm Dominick:

I look forward to each week's version of Last Thing. Thanks for another great show!
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 3:00pm scuzfink1:

Enjoy the weekend!
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 3:00pm efd:

Thanks Uncle Michael! Mike, just looked at the first bit of that video on mute - can't wait to watch it with the audio after UM signs off.
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 3:01pm Mike East:

Cheers, efd!
Great show, Uncle Michael!
Peace everybody!
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 3:02pm listener james from westwood:

Fab show, UM! Thanks a ton to you and Gary for a killer Friday!
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 3:03pm Doug Schulkind:

WFMU's Scott McDowell, host of The Long Rally (wfmu.org...), will be filling in for D:O Radio here on the Drummer Stream this coming Monday, 12-3pm. You can listen to the stream 24 hours a day, of course, but the next actual live human running the controls will be Scott at Noon on Monday!
Avatar Fri. 6/6/14 3:07pm scuzfink1:

I didn't mean I didn't enjoy either Mr. Clayton-Thomas, nor his band. I'm as big a bozo as anyone, and I enjoy 'em all. I just meant it wasn't BS&T. It should have been the DCT Band or been a solo act.
