Wedged somewhere between the Beaudoin and the King Crimson I wouldn't mind hearing Gidon Kremer's Kremerata Baltica recording of Vladimir Martynov's "Come In!" It's sappy, but in a good way.

You should talk up the ramp of every song until the lyrics come in unless there are no lyrics, then just talk all the time. People love that. Music isn't so important as your personality.

@Clay: I love one of the directors' other work, but it's a choice between the doc or Scorcese on the other channel, and Marty wins.

Nice choice, Caryn. I loathe Rush more intensely than Doug Schulkind loathes Paul Simon. Loathe wars!!
Avatar 4:21pm
Kurt Gottschalk:

oh, all's i said was that rush is awesome because they're canadian.
Avatar 4:23pm
Mark Helsten:

The Rush doc is fascinating actually. I am Canadian though. Not a Rush fan, per sey,... it is just a really well done music doc. I would say the same about some kind of monster (metallica) and the Anvil one though. Judge me on that.
Avatar 4:25pm
Carmichael:

Now that I think about it, SCTV's parody Wide World of High Voices was more spot on than I knew at the time. Geddy Lee, Neil Young, Slim Whitman, etc ... Although the Bee Gees aren't from Canada.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:27pm
common:

@ mark: i liked all those docs!
Avatar 4:27pm
Caryn:

@common: good ol' mob Scorcese (recent Scorcese has been really disappointing to me). But before that, there's also a new British comedy on that I'm going to check out to see if it's any good. Every review I've read has compared it to either Monty Python or League of Gentlemen, so I think my expectations have been raised a little too high, but who knows? It might be alright.
@Mark H: I think the documentary directors are good. I liked their Metal Evolution series. I just doubt the quality of the documentary can make up for my lack of interest in Rush.
Avatar 4:28pm

  4:29pm
Clay:

Bye friend Caryn!
Avatar 4:31pm
Caryn:

@common: I wonder if I should blame Scorcese's recent lousiness to his choice of DiCaprio as his "muse". I think both can do great work, but put together, the results tend to always be disappointing.

That guitar solo slowed down is phenomenal!!!
Avatar 4:37pm
Cecile:

eh, not a patch on the original.
Avatar 4:37pm
Caryn:

@Mike East: "The Departed" has been the best of their collaborations, but even that was not as good as the Korean original, and thus was disappointing. But the other 3-4 films they've made together? Ugh. Some good acting performances, but generally a big mess.

this mingus piece might be an early example of jaz musicians using the "studio" and overdubbing as compositional devices?
Avatar 5:22pm
Kurt Gottschalk:

right? 1962! what were the beatles doing then, huh?
Avatar 5:23pm
Cecile:

As I learn about music, I understand now why a lot of people disdained rock until it started to grow up a little. I didn't agree with it, but compare Mingus to Patti Page, and well...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:24pm
CockTails42:

Mingus had previously edited tape, like on Tijuana Moods and Ah Um but the intent there was simply shortening solos etc.
