Avatar Sat. 3/1/14 3:26am Prashanth:

Yeah..I've pretty much given up on BBC radio...the only thing I listen to is the Music Documentaries podcast. That is still ok.

  Sat. 3/1/14 3:35am Fran:

6 Music has its moments e.g. Freak Zone but a lot of mush too! Regional radio still has some gems usually very late in the evening/early hours.

hi bill, i have to do my yearly amount of pledging in one go today, i won't be able to listen next saturday. i remember last year though. i gasped for air after this last minute dash. great fun! i don't get down to commenting much anymore, somehow my saturday mornings have become increasingly busy. but hey, that doesn't mean that i am not listening anymore, to the contrary! sad, sad are those saturdays without zzzzzzero hour! best wishes from bbbbbberlin! a.

Avatar Sat. 3/1/14 4:33am Caryn:

@Prashanth: actually, I've never been. I hear it's nice, and I've even made notes to myself about B&Bs and shops I'd visit if I ever visit, but have no personal experiences to pass on. But my cousin lives there, and likes it. Lots of restored old buildings, little shops, interesting clubs,...
Avatar    Sat. 3/1/14 4:34am Bas NL:

Hi Stanley, hi all! Bit late switching in.. was working til 3am here! 10:33 here in the netherlands btw..
Avatar Sat. 3/1/14 4:35am Prashanth:

@Caryn: Thanks. I will be there for an accountants conference...so I guess old buildings will provide me some much needed relief :) Disclaimer: I am not an accountant
Avatar Sat. 3/1/14 4:38am Prashanth:

@Bill and Jack: Why is WFMU called WFMU? I don't know much about American radio naming conventions. Does it have a full form - like World's Funkiest Music Underground or something like that?
  Sat. 3/1/14 4:40am Fran:

Lucas/Hammill was a good gig Bill and you'll be pleased to hear Hammill was not (too) dramatic! Saw Goblin last week which was a bit more frustrating - some of it truly special but occasional moments where if I shut my eyes they could have been soundtracking Beverley Hills Cop!
Avatar Sat. 3/1/14 4:41am Bill Mac:

Jack, you wanna take this one? Does it have anything to do with the Upsala College connection?
Avatar Sat. 3/1/14 4:43am w41:

Goddammit my credit card is declined for who the hell knows what reason, will be pledging next week :(
Avatar    Sat. 3/1/14 4:44am Jack Mello:

@prashanth, i honestly don't know where the call letters wfmu comes from. checked the history section of the station wiki and it doesn't say. will investigate.
  Sat. 3/1/14 4:44am Fran:

This Damon reissue is a complete gem and has been getting heavy rotation in the Franosphere!
  Sat. 3/1/14 4:45am P-90:

@Prashanth: American broadcasting stations rarely have call letters that carry meanings like you suggest. Stations on the Eastern side of the country all begin with "W" , on the Western side they all begin with "K". The WFMU call letters were approved when the station was first licensed as a part of Upsala College in 1958, long before there was any inkling of its present identity as a "freeform format" station operated by a non-profit corporation and available all over the planet via the internet.
Avatar Sat. 3/1/14 4:47am Prashanth:

@Jack: Thanks....I guess you now have a topic for an entire show :)
@P-90: Ah so! alles klar... so W for East, FM for Frequency Modulation, U for Uppsala collage...
  Sat. 3/1/14 4:48am L.W. George:

Is this a comments thread for listeners only? Do FMU DJs take requests?

I'm in Japan and have a yearnin' fer sumthin' pertickaler-like.
  Sat. 3/1/14 4:50am Fran:

It's not George Strait is it L.W?
Avatar    Sat. 3/1/14 4:51am Jack Mello:

hey LW, welcome. djs check in on the comments. it's tough for us to take request during the fundraiser, but let us know anyway. can't promise we'll have it but...
Sat. 3/1/14 4:51am stating the bleedin' obvious:

pledge and find out L.W.
  Sat. 3/1/14 4:53am Fran:

Yo that's what I call hard sell!!
Avatar Sat. 3/1/14 4:54am Caryn:

@LW: During the Marathon, very unlikely. The rest of the time, depends on the DJ. Some are more free-flowing and unplanned, like Ken, and may take requests, others have clearly planned (sometimes thematic) shows, and don't. I've once gotten a request through by asking for a song to be played on a future show, not the current one.
  Sat. 3/1/14 4:55am P-90:

No, the "FM" is appended after thee four "call letters" of an fm station, just as "AM' follows the call letters of the am stations. ("WFMU FM") so the f and m in the callsign probably do not refer to freq. mod. The original terrestrial transmitter for the station was built (and remains) on a geologic feature called "The First Watchung Mountain", and the F and M may refer to "First/Mountain", the letter "W" traditionally remaining reserved for that prefix for all stations on the Eastern side of the country.
Avatar Sat. 3/1/14 4:57am Prashanth:

@P-90: That just got even more interesting. Thanks a ton!
  Sat. 3/1/14 4:58am L.W. George:

Fran: No!

STBO: Thanks, Draper!

Jack: Thanks! I love your last name. Coincidentally, I am half Portuguese and half Asian: "they call me..."
  Sat. 3/1/14 5:01am Fran:

L.W
Thanks!! Phew!!
  Sat. 3/1/14 5:01am L.W. George:

Brooking a is great. He's like an institution.
  Sat. 3/1/14 5:02am Fran:

L.W

Brooking - agreed
  Sat. 3/1/14 5:03am L.W. George:

Get it?
Brooking institute?

Answer to the last riddle was "Mello Yello"

Guess I have to donate to get a laugh...
  Sat. 3/1/14 5:04am Fran:

$75 buys you L.W premium tumbleweed - only kidding, the more the tonnage of punnage the better
Sat. 3/1/14 5:04am stating the bleedin' obvious:

lol
  Sat. 3/1/14 5:06am Fran:

Sparks - excellent again. Mr Mac you are spoiling us - the solo Mael gigs were great and it brings back memories of the marathon album a night set of shows in London a few years back
Avatar Sat. 3/1/14 5:07am Arne:

great, great show. i have to go now though. heck. maybe i can still manage to check in next week. i am for worldwide free wifi, that'd be great social policy. all the best.
