A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

I sometimes make the mistake of reading comments on news and other sites. One of the great things about the FMU comment board is that there is almost never any kind of abusive or obnoxious behavior you see on lots of sites. I don't know if the DJs can filter comments, but I attribute it to the fact that FMU listeners are just the best people.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am

@RRN63
Most rennet today is artificial.
but the cows need calves for producing milk.
most of the calves get saughtered.

depends of what your goals are.
if you're straight about no animal-killing at all, so no milk products.
If you're just about reducing mass-meat-production some cheese might be still ok.

I guess you could make an argument that the fairly unique solidarity of Revolutionaries & Workers in Paris68 (the U.S. didn't come close to that) prefigured CrowdSourcing in a way; FMU isn't broadly challenging the Government (of course) - but as StnMgr. @Andrew: You're right, it's like "I would like to eat meat but I can't, so I'll cook soy". But I think soy farming is equally hazardous to the planet as livestock, especially when it comes down to business and heavily-processed soy foods. And I speak from the world's largest soy producer and toxics using country, Brazil.

Oh right Cecile, now I see what you're talking about. I missed that one. Yeah, that's pretty rare here. @ RevoRabb: how about this: if cheese is OK, because it is produced by the animal as a natural process but is not the animal itself ( ie, "has no face"), than rennet is similarly a natural product of the animal, but not an animal per se.
"rennet" is just the culture "starter" for the fermentation that produces the cheese. (This is all quite apart from the "unpleasant" details about rennet that you might read.)

The production of soy for both food and green fuel is destroying rain forests and replacing traditional food production in developing countries. I avoid soy. A hereditary blood disease prevents total vegetarianism in our family (Well, 2 people have tried. One ended up in the ICU, one manages to get by just with chronic health problems.), but I tend to favour vegetarian meals. I think the key is moderation: some meat/fish/poultry a couple of times a week, otherwise vegetarian. The talk of exteme vegans about how everyone should be vegan and then we should exterminate all cattle, chickens, sheep and pigs seems ridiculous to me, not to mention the height of killing animals uselessly (and without using any part of it).

@P-90: If they're killing a baby calf just to get rennet from his tummy to make cheese - that's more than a by-product - that's killing - as far as the Humanitarian angle. Guido makes a good point about the Environmentalism; I have skated by for a while now saying if I don't eat animals I'm ahead of the curve (esp. as an American) - & this also means I'm still getting Cholesterol from Egg & Dairy - to add the Health angle.
- For the 'Health Food Store Types' - for lack of a probably better term - Less Processing is what's it's all about indeed; Soy is healthy - but Processed Soy - not so much.
- Thx for intelligent & well-considered input all !

'How do you know you're getting enuff protein?!"
- uh - eat till you're not hungry. Seems just fine...maybe some kid or fanatic might not get a balanced diet - & I *do* eat a good amount of egg & dairy (which are in so many things anyhow!)...

@P-90: I see your point - the calf just 'happens' to have been slaughtered - aw well - & bibi's point too that a little rennet likely makes much cheese...lots to ponder...

Animal product issues are interesting. I avoid leather and fur, but clothes being vintage makes e.g. leather more appropriate. Also, if a certain number of animals are being slaughtered for food anyway, I'd prefer that the rennet and leather from those animals also be used, just because it feels like more of the animal is being used and not wasted. Killing purely for the rennet or leather would be unacceptable. But slaughtering animals in the huge amounts we do now is also an issue.

I was talking at the bus stop last week when it was miserably cold with two equally cold strangers. One guy had just moved up from the Carolinas, and me and another young lady were giving him advice. I said "I don't want to offend anyone , but down, silk longjohns, rabbit fur hats, and fleece lined boots are your friends. Thinsulate only goes so far." The young lady goes, "Look, I have rabbit fur earmuffs at home. I"m a hippie and a vegetarian, but it's freezing here and you can die in the cold. It's one thing to be perfectly vegetarian in California, and another thing here where the weather can kill you."
