I'm a member of no smartphone club, period. I have an ancient LG.

Hey! Wow this new FMU app upgrade is really COOL
Avatar    Mon. 2/24/14 12:36pm Cecile:

exactly, van. with this set up you can have great iPod games and a manageable phone bill.
Avatar    Mon. 2/24/14 12:39pm Cecile:

Another thing an ipod is good for is alarms. I set them constantly thru the day. (Good for ADD people).

I had cheapo phones until recently--kept diving into bodies of water with a phone in my pocket. I needed something that I perceived as being important. I treat my iphone like it's a faberge egg or something.
  Mon. 2/24/14 12:41pm LovecraftDude888:

I have old phone and classic iPod only..barely using the latter right now since I'm on FMU half the time and not commuting on train no mo'. But I use it here and there. right now I'm Frangry (!) cause bought a Braun M60 shaving device, and it's doing ok but always one spot I can't quite clear on LCD's neck...it's very existential and rightly pissing me off! Time to take walk and get lunch...folks! love y'all And just wanted to say WHOOODA@@ for no app. reason!
Avatar Mon. 2/24/14 12:41pm Irene Trudel:

Hi Everybody! Just finally getting settled in. Glad to have you all here today. Julie and I are hoping to raise some much needed funds for WFMU and hope you'll join us! Just click on the pledge button on top of the playlist page to do your part.
Avatar    Mon. 2/24/14 12:43pm Ike:

Use yr cell phone infrequently or moderately? Try prepaid services like Page Plus or Virgin Mobile -- send the $$$ you save to FMU instead! Page Plus can work w/virtually any used Verizon phone (but not iPhones) and uses Verizon's network.

Avatar Mon. 2/24/14 1:05pm Irene Trudel:

Julie and i are offering some great prizes to give away during the show. Right now, Glenn Jones' wonderful "My Garden State" and Don Bikoff's ""Celestial Explosion." If you make a pledge of as little as $15 you're in the running for those prizes. And our Grand Prize for anyone who pledges at the premium level ($75) is Alasdair Roberts & Friends "A Wonder Working Stone" paired with the book "Electric Eden," a history of the British visionary Folk-Rock movement. www.electriceden.net

...it's striking when - like me - you may have heard Thau's name, but were not well-informed - & then see the list of what he was involved in from ? & the Mysterians & Buddha Records thru to the Dolls, Ramones, Suicide - & the impact said individual had on your life & you had no idea; even efd's friend he memorializes periodically likely impacted me too as a program director on WBCN Boston (speaking of Beantown)...
Avatar Mon. 2/24/14 1:08pm SeanG:

ooh I love that weather. It's a cool town right?
Avatar    Mon. 2/24/14 1:15pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...happen to be home sick today - & knocked out by the beauty & mastery on this program that I usually miss
- I don't earn much & have to put a low ceiling on what I can pledge - & split that up into minimum allowable pledges between frustratingly few of my most beloved programs; I wish I could bestow my financial vote & gratitude on all the extraordinary DJs & what their knowledge, taste & diligence bring me !
Avatar Mon. 2/24/14 1:18pm Irene Trudel:

@Revolution Rabbit, I understand your dilemma. Pledge what you can. And everybody remember, you can pay in installments--the money isn't due immediately.
  Mon. 2/24/14 1:26pm KP:

The guitar pick convinced me

Avatar Mon. 2/24/14 1:46pm Irene Trudel:

Big fan. Seeing him with Pelt was amazing.
Avatar Mon. 2/24/14 1:51pm Caryn:

Hmm, only put down one prize in my pledge, but I'll gladly take part in any other prize draw I'm eligible for, just FYI.
  Mon. 2/24/14 1:52pm LovecraftDude888:

RR: oof being sick sucks! those things tend to linger, flu or bad cold. /I bought some goodies from FMU last night....trying to do what I can. Joe McGasko took care if it!
  Mon. 2/24/14 1:53pm LovecraftDude888:

I'm still glad I haven't gotten sick this winter yet...knocking on formica
  Mon. 2/24/14 1:57pm LovecraftDude888:

and Whooda I exclaimed WHOODAAA! battle cry earlier in yer honor!
Avatar    Mon. 2/24/14 1:59pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Joe McGasko was notably patient getting *me* squared away last marathon too: if you pledge anything instead of buying stuff - you can get a ♡ & get people off your case a bit for the duration (it's called a Marathon for a reason): I signed up for $10/month automatically - so it's affordable & helpful & goes on....
Avatar Mon. 2/24/14 2:00pm Whooda:

@LCD ? Battle cry? sounds more like me on the toilet with constipation :)
  Mon. 2/24/14 2:00pm LovecraftDude888:

well I intended it as such, hehe./RR: but if you do the $10 a month do you get monthly goodies?
  Mon. 2/24/14 2:01pm LovecraftDude888:

or quarterly?
  Mon. 2/24/14 2:01pm LovecraftDude888:

I think I'm rolling over my Spotify $10 to FMU but waiting for cancellation
Avatar Mon. 2/24/14 2:02pm Whooda:

God is on FMU's side, I donated yesterday and today my PO Box buried me in unexpected bills. I am glad it worked out that way.
Avatar Mon. 2/24/14 2:03pm Andrew Waterloo:

I don't think you get stuff regularly with a Swag for Life. There's just stuff that gets sent out at random.
Avatar Mon. 2/24/14 2:04pm Andrew Waterloo:

You might here this music in a seque on public radio at the most.
  Mon. 2/24/14 2:04pm LovecraftDude888:

ah ok..I see. that's cool. I'll prob. do that cause Spotify isn't even working right for me and no time to fire it up half the time! it's absurd.
Avatar    Mon. 2/24/14 2:05pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@LDude: I got a DJ Compilation & a shirt - I think - I donated one other time & it's confusing...not really sure how the swag works - altho' T-Shirts & CDRs are up my alley...
  Mon. 2/24/14 2:07pm LovecraftDude888:

I see...ok. Well in meantime ordered goodies on store...
Avatar    Mon. 2/24/14 2:08pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- yeah - don't quote me on swag details @ all here !...
Avatar Mon. 2/24/14 2:09pm Whooda:

@LCD Had to Google to find what Spotify is: "Feb 5, 2013 - I've been using Spotify for more than a year now and it's great, but the more I use it, the more I realize just how much I need to leave. "
If its only music, FMU offers so many archives, streams and regular programming. I don't think Spotify will introduce new music before it's heard on FMU. Screw paying for Spotify.
Avatar Mon. 2/24/14 2:09pm Caryn:

@LCD: when you set up a monthly payment, you get swag according to how much the monthly payments come to in a year, so the 10 bucks a month Swag For Life pledge gives you the SFL level t-shirt and everything below that level (a sticker, a goldfinch t-shirt, and one DJ premium).
  Mon. 2/24/14 2:10pm LovecraftDude888:

my friend convinced me to sub. to Spotify a year or two ago and it's ok but not working too well...sluggish..i don't even have time to mess with it much anymore.
  Mon. 2/24/14 2:10pm LovecraftDude888:

Caryn: gotcha...ok.
Avatar    Mon. 2/24/14 2:10pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Thx Caryn - I think they missed me for a shirt actually - but that's for elsewhere...
Avatar Mon. 2/24/14 2:12pm Mike East:

Alls I'm sayin' is I can't wait to get my hands on that flask and rolling papers.
Avatar Mon. 2/24/14 2:14pm Whooda:

@Mike that disrepair kit is a classic for sure.
Avatar    Mon. 2/24/14 2:14pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...the papers are likely to become legal to use sooner than the flask in public !...
Avatar Mon. 2/24/14 2:15pm Caryn:

The only swag that doesn't follow the "get this and all the swag below this level" are the DJ premiums. For instance, if you pledge a mouse pledge, you get 7 premiums, but you don't also get the 3 premiums mentioned on the half a mouse level or the one premium mentioned on the 75 buck level. So, you get 7 premiums, not 7+3+1.
(Man, I hope this explanation makes sense, LCD & RRN63)
Avatar Mon. 2/24/14 2:16pm Patrick of Jolon:

Makes sense to me, Caryn.
Avatar Mon. 2/24/14 2:16pm Caryn:

I'll happily use the flask in public, since it won't have anything alcoholic in it. I'm foreseeing a flask full of cherry coke or something.
Avatar Mon. 2/24/14 2:17pm Mike East:

I always have a really hard time picking my DJ premiums. Sooo much quality stuff that will never be released anywhere else!
Avatar Mon. 2/24/14 2:19pm Whooda:

@Caryn Don't whip out that flask of cherry coke if your warming your hands around a barrel bon-fire next to hobos, they won't see the humor in that.
Avatar    Mon. 2/24/14 2:19pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

It makes sense to your methodical mind Caryn ! - & yeah, Thx. (It's like when I try to explain something astrological to someone & think I'm doing my best - & then they ask me what it means...it's easy to fall back on jargon you are familiar w/)
...I wonder if that's not a European attitude - 'cause in the U.S. it's usually not worth challenging the cops whatever you have in the flask (maybe in N'Orleans it's legal?)...
Avatar Mon. 2/24/14 2:19pm Andrew Waterloo:

@Mike, then it's finding time to listen to them
Avatar Mon. 2/24/14 2:20pm Whooda:

Call me crazy, I'm choosing Dave Emory's "Life's Work" CD premium. YEAH!
Avatar    Mon. 2/24/14 2:20pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...& Whooda presents the flipside
...so true MikeE - but by same token hard to go really wrong!...
Avatar    Mon. 2/24/14 2:20pm Julie:

not much time left, pledge now. Get Irene's awesome premium cd
Avatar Mon. 2/24/14 2:22pm Irene Trudel:

Get in the running for Sam Amidon's album "Bright Sunny South" or The Milk Carton Kids' "The Ash and the Clay" for a pledge of as little as $15. But we hope you'll pledge more than that. :)
Avatar Mon. 2/24/14 2:22pm Mike East:

you're crazy, Whooda....but you knew that. :)
Avatar    Mon. 2/24/14 2:22pm herb.nyc:

hmmm, i saw SAM AMIDON do a live set at an art gallery (3 yrs ago?). i don't recall him being so guitar-crazy.
Avatar Mon. 2/24/14 2:23pm Caryn:

I know, Mike! I keep making notes on my DJ premium list based on what I've heard of the premiums on the shows. I have marks for "must get", "pretty sure", "on the fence" and "naah". Once I have enough "must gets" for a certain pledge, I can make a pledge. The first pledge is usually easiest. Then, it's two weeks of trying to choose between the remaining possible ones. Aargh!
Avatar Mon. 2/24/14 2:24pm Whooda:

@Mike, yeah, I know that already, I just need the reassurance. One can never tell when they might slip into sanity, and by then it's too late.
Avatar Mon. 2/24/14 2:25pm Caryn:

@RRN63: well, the cops don't really mind drinking in public too much, as long as a person is not under age or rowdy. So it'll be fine over here. I wouldn't try it in the States.
Avatar Mon. 2/24/14 2:25pm Irene Trudel:

Sam Amidon is quite a good guitarist-- and is married to Beth Orton. Love his style!
Avatar    Mon. 2/24/14 2:25pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...sanity claws...
Avatar    Mon. 2/24/14 2:27pm herb.nyc:

thanks for that "married to beth orton" tidbit, irene, bec i wuv wuv gossip!
Avatar Mon. 2/24/14 2:27pm Matt from Springfield:

Hey Irene and Julie!
I'm happy to pledge for Irene -- you should be too!!
Avatar Mon. 2/24/14 2:28pm Matt from Springfield:

@Caryn: Same with my premiums--last year I had 12 premiums competing for 2 "free" slots, this year...it's 14! So I'm listening to what the DJs play from theirs, narrowing down my choices and deciding on my final premium list after the Marathon.
Avatar    Mon. 2/24/14 2:29pm Danne D:

Julie Dark in the Day time?!?
:)
Avatar Mon. 2/24/14 2:29pm Mike East:

just called in and spoke to a dude who lives in my town...and knows someone who lives on my street.
Avatar Mon. 2/24/14 2:30pm Matt from Springfield:

It's Daywalker Danne D! :)
Avatar Mon. 2/24/14 2:31pm Matt from Springfield:

"Johnny Stall and the Almost Bathrooms"
Avatar Mon. 2/24/14 2:32pm Caryn:

@Matt: exactly! Sometimes, I can pick up a couple of the also-rans from the prize warehouse the following year, but it's a pain when you have 3 times as many premiums you'd like than you have free slots.
Avatar    Mon. 2/24/14 2:33pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...'ahm gonna make yoo a household name Johnny !'...
Avatar Mon. 2/24/14 2:33pm Caryn:

Sheesh, my grammar is slipping. That "than" should be a second "as". Oh well.
Avatar Mon. 2/24/14 2:34pm Matt from Springfield:

2011 was a bumper crop year for great premiums--I'll be picking those out of the Warehouse for years!
(Btw, the WFMU homepage link "Buy crap from our store!" has some of the items from the Warehouse for sale, any time of year. Usually the non-DJ specific items, like the Best of LCD book or the "Locked-Groove" record. But save your Warehouse prizes for the things that can't be purchased).
Avatar Mon. 2/24/14 2:35pm Mike East:

woohoo!!! my first pledge this marathon and I'm a winner!!! Thanks, Irene and Julie!
Avatar Mon. 2/24/14 2:35pm Matt from Springfield:

Is that Mike East? Congrats! :D

@Caryn: Put a nickel in the grammar jar...
Avatar Mon. 2/24/14 2:36pm Caryn:

Nice, Mike!
  Mon. 2/24/14 2:36pm van:

Dang it. I've missed so much of this show due to work today. Grrr.
Avatar Mon. 2/24/14 2:36pm Mike East:

That's Matt! I knew it'd be one of us.
  Mon. 2/24/14 2:37pm van:

well hopefully my first pledge of this marathon made its way to you.
Avatar Mon. 2/24/14 2:37pm Caryn:

@Matt: can I put in an IOU? I'm saving my nickels for pledges.
Avatar    Mon. 2/24/14 2:37pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...yeah Caryn - I find in my old age I'm slipping a preposition here or there in my 4th language (...whuuuut??)....
Avatar Mon. 2/24/14 2:37pm Matt from Springfield:

Me too, Mike. Good prizes find their way to good listeners :)
Avatar Mon. 2/24/14 2:37pm Whooda:

Congrats Mike East!

@Caryn: Absolutely!

Have you seen the 1937 Spencer Tracy film "Captains Courageous"? The elite private-school boy is in a school newspaper club, where one member tells another to put a nickel in the jar, for "using 'like' as a conjunction"! I guess like was something that you like, not compare with something else!

I may have to start shaking down the phone staff for their money! Let's get Irene to her goal, guys!

Wooo! Robyn! That was a great episode, and a great live guest for WFMU!
Help us keep getting these wonderful live guests, and Archiving their performances!
Avatar Mon. 2/24/14 2:43pm Caryn:

@Matt: yep, that's private schools for you, heh! (Decent movie, too, if not one of Tracy's best.)
Avatar Mon. 2/24/14 2:44pm Matt from Springfield:

I think so too, Caryn, he won an Oscar for that, and it really proves Spencer's legendary status by showing his best acting chops.
Avatar    Mon. 2/24/14 2:45pm Julie:

get in the running for this Julianna cd, you only need to pledge $15 but you need to do it NOW
  Mon. 2/24/14 2:47pm van:

So nice
Avatar Mon. 2/24/14 2:47pm Caryn:

@Matt: yep, it's one of those "the performance is better than the movie" ones.
  Mon. 2/24/14 2:48pm LovecraftDude888:

Weird how the cow isn't bowing or wagging its tail. Supposed to at 50%...kind of like the cow is over at GTDR right now :)
Avatar Mon. 2/24/14 2:49pm Matt from Springfield:

Thanks LovecraftDude, go for it!
Avatar Mon. 2/24/14 2:50pm Caryn:

I wonder if the cow stops after 60 or 70 % and then starts up again at 100 %?
  Mon. 2/24/14 2:54pm van:

Hmm, good question Caryn. Probably a Kenzo question...
Avatar Mon. 2/24/14 2:54pm Irene Trudel:

Yeah, it's strange how the cow isn't bowing, but if we can get 100% maybe both will go? Just a few minutes to find out!
Avatar Mon. 2/24/14 2:55pm Caryn:

I'm just troubled by how the moving cow seems to morph between a cow and a pig...
  Mon. 2/24/14 2:55pm van:

Oooooh. It's a temporary timing thing for cow bow. Looks like just minutes long...the cow already stopped over at GTDR
