Not necessarily a bad thing, but probably.
Avatar Wed. 2/19/14 3:05pm rrg:

That bat roost has to be British. Doesn't it?

I can't read the fine print, though.
Avatar Wed. 2/19/14 3:05pm Michael:

That picture is crazy.
Avatar Wed. 2/19/14 3:06pm SSS:

Finally! A proper church for bats! So civilized.........
Avatar Wed. 2/19/14 3:07pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Bats are good. Socialize BatCare.
Wed. 2/19/14 3:07pm Listening Out There:

Even more drums. This drummer lives in Switzerland, last I heard...
Avatar Wed. 2/19/14 3:08pm common:

Yea! Love bats and drums and synths!
Avatar Wed. 2/19/14 3:09pm mariano:

Wow, love me some Billy Cobham. The opening from Mahavishnu's "Vital Transformation" is the most kick-ass drum intro ever!
Avatar Wed. 2/19/14 3:09pm Michael:

Cobham played at my college around '77 with George Duke and I remember he had quite a large kit for back then.
  Wed. 2/19/14 3:09pm Laura L:

The municipality must've put the cross on top to keep the vampire variety of bats away.
  Wed. 2/19/14 3:12pm P-90:

OK: "Bat-ROOST". --Thought for for a second it was like the town's smoke-house, "BatRoast"
Wed. 2/19/14 3:12pm Listening Out There:

I've seen Billy Cobham 4-5 times, and he always he a large kit. Large muscles, too.
Avatar Wed. 2/19/14 3:13pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...these here Batz is Sanctified !!
...They're probably just exploiting the Worker Bats for guano to make Munitions...
Avatar Wed. 2/19/14 3:13pm Droll:

It looks like there's a human-sized door on the front, but no stairs leading to it. This signage 30ft in the air also suggests something missing from this picture's story.
Not sure how to properly praise Mr. Cobham's combination of technique and taste...
Avatar Wed. 2/19/14 3:14pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...a veritable Guano-tanimo...
Avatar Wed. 2/19/14 3:15pm Droll:

LoT, I've never seen Cobham live, but I've seen Dennis Chambers and his arms are as thick as my legs. Same kinds of explosions of speed. Great to watch.
  Wed. 2/19/14 3:16pm Kirill:

Stratus? I thought it's Hedrix melody
  Wed. 2/19/14 3:16pm berbo:

Are you sleeping?
And if so, why are we sleeping.
It OK, they're only sleeping.
Avatar Wed. 2/19/14 3:17pm rrg:

Between last week and this I got this album. I rather like it, don't you know. It's not the only Nilsson tribute album, but it's...the most recent.
  Wed. 2/19/14 3:18pm Woo:

I saw Mott the Hoople open for Mahavishnu Orchestra. Someone threw a bottle at Ian Hunter. After he jumped off the stage and kicked ass, Mott's set was over. I miss those incongruous pairings.
Avatar Wed. 2/19/14 3:19pm glenn:

ian could probably still kick ass, at what, 72?
Avatar Wed. 2/19/14 3:19pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...& there's a perfectly symmetrical pairing...
Avatar Wed. 2/19/14 3:20pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...down the memory hole...
Wed. 2/19/14 3:20pm Listening Out There:

Similar: One time I saw the Mahavishnu Orchestra, the opener was Taj Mahal. He introduced his backup singers, the Pointer Sisters.
  Wed. 2/19/14 3:20pm P-90:

Saw B. Cobham I-don't-know-how many times (including w/the underrated Jazz is Dead combo) and he was always very muscular and big-kitted.
Avatar Wed. 2/19/14 3:20pm glenn:

i think the bat roost is in texas. i saw that pic elsewhere recently.
Avatar Wed. 2/19/14 3:22pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- there's the famous bridge in Austin 1,000s of bats fly out from under every sunset - they migrate from Mexico...Austin is a very 'Batman' city...
  Wed. 2/19/14 3:24pm mariano:

Wow, wish I'd been able to see Mahavishnu, especially with the openers y'all mentioned.
Avatar Wed. 2/19/14 3:25pm Chingadera Con Queso:

I am in love with this!

"Maybe a DNS issue?" is my usual answer with site-not-found issues. Sometimes it's actually right...
Avatar Wed. 2/19/14 3:37pm rrg:

If you modify the link in the browser to explicitly stick "http://" in front of it, it seems to work.

Might be something to do with how this site modifies links for display. Or maybe it's more subtle.
Avatar Wed. 2/19/14 3:37pm KevinfromBayRidge:

Good Afternoon all. Saw Mahavishnu open for The Byrds & Blue 0yster Cult @ Stony Brook in the early 70s. No Pennywhistlesor Poets ..All good!

@rrg: I got Safari - it adds http://, but it don't open...
Avatar Wed. 2/19/14 3:41pm mariano:

Mahavishnu and BOC? Just seeing those two names together makes me feel like I'm tripping!

Yeah, that's a fave Stereolab of mine.
Avatar Wed. 2/19/14 3:43pm Droll:

rrg is right, if humans agree to speak computerese and correct the link, then the computer shows you the picture. Computers love cookies, I'll bet Kenzo ate the cookies and that's why the computer link is broken: envious computer.
Avatar Wed. 2/19/14 3:44pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...of course - those people just like to say they saw Hendrix as a Stratus Symbol...
Avatar Wed. 2/19/14 3:44pm rrg:

I'm using Safari too. Clicking on the link as displayed here returns a page with the text "page not found" from the Shorpy site. Explicitly adding "http://" at the front of the Safari-displayed URL goes to the page.

I swear. For me, anyway.
Avatar Wed. 2/19/14 3:45pm rrg:

This is one of those songs that I recognize from the first couple of notes.

Take me back to Constantinople.
  Wed. 2/19/14 3:47pm P-90:

OK, "mosquito control" in times of much malaria. On stilts to "facilitate the harvesting of guano by the truckload". Yum.

The "stilts" look at first glance like they're 4 by 4's and the whole thing is like a little dollhouse bat-roost. Then you see the little dude. On closer look the stilts are concrete poured in plywood molds, which captures the wood grain patterns on the surface.

"Guano by the truckload": remember the 2012 Republican Debates?
  Wed. 2/19/14 3:50pm whattawino:

OK, I have to say I saw a show in Orlando '72 with Mahavishnu, Todd Rundgren and...George Carlin! It was end of the year college show. Yow!

i don't think it's concrete. the joints where the beams meet the posts is too defined.

@rrg: shows my perfect score for avoiding the Osbournes reality show, I had no idea the Pat Boone cover was the theme.

does ron jeremy really do a cover of that, alison?
  Wed. 2/19/14 3:58pm P-90:

Maybe it'll make the Guinness Book of World Records "Top Ten Episodes of WFMU's Seven Second Delay Program" list. But what would get bumped to make room?
Avatar Wed. 2/19/14 4:34pm rrg:

One actually can hear Clara Bow speak. She made a few sound movies.

Ya know, it could very well have been Thorogood. But I do remember the Nevs opening, perhaps a different concert. I'm older than all of you, and that's all I remember.

@Shaun: I was certain he used that loop in more than one of his shows. I still sounds like I heard him use it a couple times over the years, wonder if there's way to check that...or maybe he's made a lot of similar-vibe loops for what he does, so it sounds familiar for that reason

Alison, That's a brilliant idea! I'm gonna make one of those -- a machine that takes cash and gives a card with "bitcoins" on it. Who are they going to come after when they find out the card is blank? I'd rather have anonymous cash than anonymous bitcoin.

Mandl, "who's real instrument is bass", is stealing throne time from actual drummers! It's amazing to hear how the different drummers get different sound from the same kit. EFD gets the best tone from the toms, he must hit a dime-sized spot in the middle, but I like Bryce's playing.
