I keep recalling the ice storm or snow and ice storm(s) of like 1976-1977, sitting there with no heat for several days, fireplace going, god it suckeeeddddd hardddd. Major suction. And then i had to stay at my freaky Uncle and Aunt's house for a few days and that was not that pleasant....across town....only thing made it bearable was my Cousin was around and he was ok. Otherwise....not a great scene.

@CCrides My X moved my daughter from Sacramento where she was born and raised to Nantucket at age 14. The culture shock could not have been more shocking. I felt so sorry for her suffering that experience. To transfer from CA to Nantucket probably makes NJ transfer look like Disneyland by comparison. I joined her within a year, that's when I realized how hard that transition was to make. The island even had a bumpersticker that said "there sure are a lot of asshole here for such a small island."

Yes, NGH, some refer to fried pork rinds as chicharones and others use the term for the brittle bites. I find it confusing. Cracklin' sounds like the term used in the deep south of USA.

Yeah, crackin' is basically fatback slowly boiled in it's own oil for 24 hours (usually in a large barrel). At least, that's how the old Floridian crackers prepared them (Yes, they were called crackers based on their 'cracker houses').
Avatar Wed. 1/29/14 2:05pm Whooda Hellameye:

Avatar Wed. 1/29/14 2:06pm hip:

Here in Spain (Europe) 'chicharrones' refers to a crunchy and dry mix of pork, chicken and garlic fried in its own fat. The crunchy fried pork skin is called 'cortezas'. But we're quite far away from NYC and languages travel and have their own (incredible) History.

Tasty and not suitable for vegetarians, of course.
Avatar    Wed. 1/29/14 2:08pm doca:

@Whooda: There's another (extremely) fat dish which also makes my head spin that is provolone à milanesa, which is balls of provolone cheese fried with a crust of flour

@NGH: yes, 'chicharrones are prepared just as you said: big barrel, their own fat and low and slow heating.

my wife is bolivian and makes chicharrones, but its Queens-ified. Its basically pork ribs with a special seasoning...mostly cumin. Delicious, though not necessarily "authentic".

The last time she made it, I made a dish of mac n cheese on the side...with pancetta. Delicious.

I checked cochinillo out but I don't know if I could eat it, I know it sounds incoherent, but I can't stand meat that actually looks like the animal from which it comes. I already feel bad enough eating torresmo or churrasco

Don't feel guilty, doca, for eating provolone milanesa, my X made brie balls, basically like your provolone milanesa but with brie, now THAT is guilt inducing stuff.

Cochinillo is a baby pork and, yes, it is VERY sad to meet it in front of you on a dish. I mean it.

@Whooda: you would like to visit Rio Grande do Sul (next to Argentina in SOuth Brazil). Every year people celebrate their roots here camping in a big park and some of them make things like this: p2.trrsf.com...

Mike East: it's ok..gotcha, now I understand. Willowbrook haha what a goof, man. I haven't been in that mall prob. since at least, 1987 or so. or Wayne for that matter. My dad at one point worked in Paterson and that was ....scary a bit. But we never went outside his workplace much then, so wasn't too bad. Very weird kind of Brooklyn vibe in those days in downtown Paterson.
Avatar    Wed. 1/29/14 2:24pm Mike East:

I don't think Paterson is too much better these days...from what I hear.
     Wed. 1/29/14 2:25pm LovecraftDude888:

I'd probably be working for WFMU or volunteering if I didn't live in bloody LI...it's very frustrating nowadays. I mean, all the good stuff is in NYC or NJ! It really annoys me sometimes. Ah well. And there's radio on LI but mainly kind of beat.
     Wed. 1/29/14 2:26pm LovecraftDude888:

Mike..yeah, Paterson I was actually there around 1998 or so, maybe, for various reasons for a day or so, or half, and it was a bit rough. Most of it, but we had no issues. I hadn't been there prob. in 10 years at that point or more.

I've been told I'm Type 2 Diabetic as of August last year....maybe god knows. So far it's so mild..borderline almost. I'm trying to cut out the red meat and fats and starches and things. Eating tons of tofu dishes and things for dinner....losing weight for sure eating that. The MD said watch too much tofu..but what does he know? It's better than red meat!! And not as much bad carbs in tofu

@DCE - I'm still upset about not being able to eat rice w/ my beans...previously my favorite food. Why does everything give you cancer?!

@LCD - I think people started going to Willowbrook more instead. Could also have to do with big box stores popping up in the area. Who knows. Its creepy going there now, though.

Rice..the thing with rice is heavy carbs in large amounts....and brown is better for sure nutrition wise. Pasta, ok in smaller amounts. I used to pound it all down...not anymore. Smaller portions per meal but i can still have it. It's just, major moderation.
