The whole reason why astronauts went to the moon was because public demand wanted them to go to find out for sure the moon was not made of cheese. Popular belief at the time. Imagine harvesting all of that cheese if the moon was really made of cheese. When the astronauts arrived they dug into the moon only to find dirt and rock. No cheese. But yet again they were not on the dark side of the moon.

Thanks GMMM, that explains why Switzerland so profusely protested the lunar landing mission. That could have wrecked their cheese industry. I'm thinking that the science at the time had the moon made of Swiss cheese.

Avatar Mon. 1/27/14 4:26pm Andrew Waterloo:

I think I just completely zoned out listening to this Schnitzler track
Avatar Mon. 1/27/14 4:28pm Matt from Springfield:

A German restaurant should make a new, experimental schnitzel for each day...and call it Conradschnitzle.
Avatar Mon. 1/27/14 4:29pm holed-up memories:

Carmichael They still haven't figured out where the rock came from, it didn't dissapear again though, they studied it and found many times higher than average (magnesium?).   Mon. 1/27/14 4:31pm P-90:

@whoo's_lumpy: that was a thoughtful and completely credible discussion of the Apollo missions, the cheese issue, etc. Until you mention "protest by the Swiss". That's one thing that I'm pretty certain never actually happened, check your facts please.
Avatar Mon. 1/27/14 4:33pm lunarcycle moma:

I have a reverse generation gap situation, RTD. When I visit my parents lately, they're listening to top-40! (?!!!) I blame their YMCA aerobics classes. (Pseu plays some of it on her show too.) I'm surprised to find some decent songs on the top-40 now. Nothing I imagine you'd like much, RTD, but Lorde actually has character.

@carm, good idea! I haven't tried Can yet, but my 8-yr old daughter is very into Kraftwerk, John Cale and Roxy Music. And Taylor Swift and 1 Direction.
Avatar Mon. 1/27/14 5:29pm Scott Williams:

@Nat, yes it was!
  Mon. 1/27/14 5:30pm bloopy:

btw the rock section of the Grammys was the most abysmal thing ever..rubbish tunes by remaining Sabbath, beatles, stones members etc. #vomit. also kris kristofferson was up there performing with a guitar but not actually playing the guitar, just sort of fondling it. willie nelson looked half asleep etc. it was a horror show!!!
Mon. 1/27/14 5:30pm Nat the Parker:

whooo!
Avatar Mon. 1/27/14 5:30pm Scott Williams:

dunno much abt the diz it kidz, but that Ariana Grande seems to making big ol waves. she seems funny & smart, but a goddawful singer
Avatar Mon. 1/27/14 5:30pm Andrew Waterloo:

My daughter likes the They Might Be Giants kids albums
Avatar Mon. 1/27/14 5:31pm Matt from Springfield:

@Nat: Only the best version of it, like, evah!

@P-9Ø: Ah, she looks like a Diz star, and her dominance is shown by all her x-overs: "Wizards of Waverly Place in Wizards on Deck with Hannah Montana" and "The Suite Life on Deck".
  Mon. 1/27/14 5:32pm P-9Ø:

#vomit: hahahaha
Avatar    Mon. 1/27/14 5:32pm Carmichael:

@Matt: They gave me the patented blank stare. Then I told them the singer just makes everything up as he goes. The more patented, blanker stare.

But 1 kid likes Alan Parsons, the other loves the Turtles. I'm slowly breaking them from their youth. And who the hell is Bastille?!?
Avatar Mon. 1/27/14 5:33pm Mike East:

@scott - my daughter keeps talking about Ariana Grande....I don't know who she is, but she REALLY wants to meet her. She says she's a very talented singer, but I have my doubts.
  Mon. 1/27/14 5:34pm P-9Ø:

@Matt from: If you haven't seen Debby in "16 Wishes", you're in for a treat. It's the hawtest flick since "Last Tango in Paris"
Avatar Mon. 1/27/14 5:35pm Matt from Springfield:

@Carm: There are Can songs like "Waiting for the Streetcar", that we may think are great extendajams, but kids would prob call "stupid".

@Mike: en.wikipedia.org...
And yes, Diznistars are recording songs with rappers now! Along with the traditional Mariah and Whitney covers.
Avatar Mon. 1/27/14 5:35pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

KA-ROME!
  Mon. 1/27/14 5:37pm P-9Ø:

@Disney Stars: and Debby's version of "Santa Baby" was to DIE for
Avatar    Mon. 1/27/14 5:37pm Ike:

@Bloopy, Willie Nelson often has that blank look lately. He had it on Bill Maher's show the other night, too. Hmm. I say legalize it, but it's not 100% harmless. Don't totally smoke your brains out!
Avatar Mon. 1/27/14 5:38pm Mike East:

@Matt - thanks, I guess.
Avatar Mon. 1/27/14 5:38pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Matt: I was introduced to the CAN comp. CANNIBALISM at about age 11, and went straight for the track AUMGN, and obsessed like a beast over it for months. At that age, or any age, how could one NOT obsess like a beast over it?
Avatar Mon. 1/27/14 5:38pm Matt from Springfield:

@Scott: Haven't seen Ariana's acting, she might be great, but her song material looks pretty scary.

And YES: Taylor Swift feat. Bryan Ferry must happen! And John Cale could even organize 1D's VU tribute concert...
  Mon. 1/27/14 5:39pm Dr.Duke:

Afraid old William has long since turned the corner on that one.
Avatar    Mon. 1/27/14 5:40pm Carmichael:

I bet my kids would like Stereolab. I'll try them next.
Avatar Mon. 1/27/14 5:40pm fleep:

Willie is 80 now, he can be forgiven for a few blank looks.
Avatar Mon. 1/27/14 5:41pm Matt from Springfield:

@RTD: Young minds are still in development, there's plenty of masterful classics that I wouldn't have (or even didn't at the time) like around 11-13. It takes many years to find greatness on your own, and then to make the mental connections to other things that are great for the same reasons.
Avatar Mon. 1/27/14 5:41pm Mike East:

@Matt - Now that I see the pic, I recognize her from what I believe is a spinoff of iCarly, the thought of which makes me ill.
Avatar Mon. 1/27/14 5:41pm Matt from Springfield:

Stereolab sounds workable, GO FOR IT!
Avatar    Mon. 1/27/14 5:41pm Ike:

Good point, Fleep.
  Mon. 1/27/14 5:42pm P-9Ø:

@Carm: good call on Stereolab.
The Turtles will eternally appeal to kids
Avatar Mon. 1/27/14 5:44pm Mike East:

and, no, her acting is terrible...par for nickelodeon. What's the deal with the laugh track after literally every two lines of dialogue?
  Mon. 1/27/14 5:44pm P-9Ø:

Alvaro sounded like David Thomas from Pere Ubu for just a second there
Avatar    Mon. 1/27/14 5:46pm Carmichael:

When you have the time, google the Turtles' whiteboard review of their career, complete with arrows and circles. It was one of the funnier rock-related stories this side of Spinal Tap.
Avatar Mon. 1/27/14 5:46pm Matt from Springfield:

Oh yeah, and last week...I took the "Frankie Teardrop" Challenge!

That is a masterful classic, but OH GAWD the sing-whisper-SCREAMING!! That track leaves physical effects, even without infrasound!
  Mon. 1/27/14 5:46pm P-9Ø:

Mike: Lets the kids know what's supposed to be funny. Don't you remember Get Smart or The Ropers? Same deal
Avatar Mon. 1/27/14 5:47pm Matt from Springfield:

OTOH, those who haven't listened to the whole track should take their first listen under Challenge circumstances, to appreciate the true terror of the production :)
Avatar Mon. 1/27/14 5:48pm Mike East:

@P90 - I remember those, but I don't remember the laugh track going off nearly as much as on these shows.
Avatar Mon. 1/27/14 5:49pm Droll:

Turtles explain how to be suckers on a whiteboard: www.youtube.com...
Avatar Mon. 1/27/14 5:49pm Matt from Springfield:

@P-9Ø: And on CBS sitcoms..let's the geezers know what the younger writers think that they think should be funny.

Oh - Carter Tuttl - no wonder likey...
Avatar    Mon. 1/27/14 5:50pm Carmichael:

Oh, and I gave Mammatus a big fat clicky star!
Avatar Mon. 1/27/14 5:50pm northguineahills:

Who's remixing this? Pretty darn good!
  Mon. 1/27/14 5:51pm P-9Ø:

Remember the Banana Splits? Really overdone laugh tracks, especially when the material was funny enought o stand on its own. Lance Link: Secret Chimp same deal
Avatar    Mon. 1/27/14 5:51pm Parq:

The flip side of nowadays is that there are some shows -- Parks and Rec comes to mind right off the bat -- that get along with no laugh track or studio audience at all. Kind of gratifying to those of us who remember when Tony Randall and Jack Klugman had to plead with ABC to let them do one episode that way.
Avatar Mon. 1/27/14 5:51pm Scott Williams:

They're remixing themselves
Avatar Mon. 1/27/14 5:51pm Matt from Springfield:

"Raising Hope" did a true-to-life parody of a Dis/Nick style "kidcom"--they really did their research on that.
Avatar    Mon. 1/27/14 5:52pm Parq:

And it's understandable that we need to be told when the lines on these other shows are supposed to be funny, since virtually none of them actually is.
  Mon. 1/27/14 5:53pm P-9Ø:

Amanda Bynes' original show on Nick kicked ass. What happened?
#trainwreck
Avatar    Mon. 1/27/14 5:53pm Parq:

Overall, too much toilet humor on "Hope" for my taste, but yes, they've done some very clever conceptual episodes.
Avatar Mon. 1/27/14 5:54pm fleep:

The overcranked laugh tracks are a training technique. In conjunction with hypersugary breakfast cereals, young impressionable minds are brought into Disneyology and Disneyetics.
  Mon. 1/27/14 5:54pm P-9Ø:

Yay! Verbal! my new #1
Avatar    Mon. 1/27/14 5:54pm Ike:

Sadly, @Parq, Parks & Rec (and Community) gets very dismal ratings and has somehow nonetheless survived anyway, perhaps due to demographics or the political power of Lorne Michaels within NBC, or more likely because NBC is pathetic and simply didn't have anything else. Great show, though it suffered severe growing pains. (Y'all should Netflix it, but skip straight to season 2!)
  Mon. 1/27/14 5:55pm P-9Ø:

@fleep: Disneyetics! Please say I can steal that
Avatar Mon. 1/27/14 5:56pm fleep:

@P-9Ø The 94 song countdown on this same album is also a winner.
Avatar Mon. 1/27/14 5:56pm northguineahills:

Thanks Scott!
Avatar Mon. 1/27/14 5:56pm Matt from Springfield:

I need just three inches of string, can they sell me a "stringlet" as well??

@fleep: You're right--what IS the difference between them? Disney is less secretive, but they'll still sue yo ass and stomp you into the dirt!
  Mon. 1/27/14 5:56pm P-9Ø:

@fleep yesss
Avatar Mon. 1/27/14 5:57pm Scott Williams:

this was fun today, thanks for hanging out everyone!
Avatar    Mon. 1/27/14 5:57pm Ike:

Raising Hope, another good one withOUT a laugh track that has survived somehow on abysmal ratings, indicating the sad tastes of the American public at large.
  Mon. 1/27/14 5:57pm P-9Ø:

I love how she notifies them that their orders for tape are being "taped"
Avatar    Mon. 1/27/14 5:58pm Carmichael:

Jim Belushi and Tom Arnold constantly get shows. 'Nuff said.
  Mon. 1/27/14 5:58pm P-9Ø:

Thanks, Mr. Williams
Avatar Mon. 1/27/14 5:59pm Matt from Springfield:

Thanks for playing your stuff, Scott!
Sure was fun, thanks everybody, and have a great evening!
Avatar    Mon. 1/27/14 5:59pm Carmichael:
