Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

In a meeting that just started, but back in about an hour
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 12:01pm Stevel:

I think we should wait for Gary.
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 12:02pm Jeff Golick:

Time to commute, though the gif is giving me pause.
See you on the other side!
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 12:03pm Doug Schulkind:

Hello to Alex in Illinois and northguineahills who I neglected to greet over on the other side.
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 12:04pm ndbob:

afternoon UM and everyone!
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 12:04pm Alex In Illinois:

Hi Gang! I was there for Give The Drummer Some too, but I was busy working at the same time, so I did not have a chance to post anything.
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 12:04pm Uncle Michael:

Hello everyone!
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 12:05pm Alex In Illinois:

I remember this movie. I think it was rated "R" and there were no adults who thought it worth their time to take us to see it at the time.
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 12:05pm duke:

hello UM and everyone
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 12:07pm pacific standard simon:

Stoned embassies? Sign me up!
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 12:08pm Uncle Michael:

Hard to imagine that was rated R, Alex. maybe seeing Henry Fonda as a baddie was too much for kids.
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 12:09pm Uncle Michael:

Sing America with me...please?
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 12:10pm Stevel:

Hoping the Johnny Sea piece wraps up soon. Its difficult to work, standing at attention and saluting.

(Nice "oriental" music theme.)
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 12:11pm Mike East:

that's Once Upon a Time in the West, right? I didn't like that one as much as the Clint Eastwood trilogy, as Sergio Leone films go.
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 12:12pm pacific standard simon:

There was a reason that the words "simpleminded" and "jingoism" were frequently used in the same sentence.
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 12:12pm Uncle Michael:

Please be seated.
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 12:14pm Stevel:

I will pass on the drugs Dion was taking when he performed this cover.
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 12:14pm pacific standard simon:

Dion's had that Jose Feliciano record on his turntable for the past two weeks!
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 12:14pm Michael:

Once Upon A Time in the West is Leone's best. And I don't think it could have been rated R - back in the 60's maybe rated M.
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 12:15pm ndbob:

I remember hearing this for the first time - quite uprising - @simon Yes:)
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 12:15pm ndbob:

Ah I remember passing up this LP for 99 cents
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 12:16pm Uncle Michael:

mistake!
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 12:17pm ndbob:

For sure UM
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 12:17pm pacific standard simon:

I'll take Graham Gouldman over Peter No-one as a singer any day, but the Hermits' ghosts were better musicians.
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 12:23pm efd:

present!
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 12:23pm Uncle Michael:

Ha!
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 12:24pm efd:

How's this for a story: a couple of years ago I got a copy of this single from a friend in LA who was moving...

... OUT OF THE HOUSE HE BOUGHT FROM DAVID DUNDAS!
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 12:26pm Uncle Michael:

Wow. Did he leave any jeans behind?
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 12:26pm efd:

No, he had them all on.
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 12:26pm pacific standard simon:

He pulls his jeans on one leg at a time.
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 12:27pm pacific standard simon:

But does he love his shirt?
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 12:29pm Doug Schulkind:

Screw the yuppies and their pappardelle westerns.

I just felt like saying that.
  Fri. 1/24/14 12:30pm Dean:

Here's a beautiful "Arms of Mary," c/o Mr. Kottke: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rUQWCpukraw
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 12:31pm Mike East:

had to google pappardelle. now I'm hungry.
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 12:32pm Uncle Michael:

Gotta check out the Leo after the show...thanks Dean.
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 12:34pm Brian in UK:

New word pappardelle - father of the man who runs the Italian food shop.
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 12:34pm Uncle Michael:

Evidently this is one of the earliest tracks built over a drum machine. This, according to some authors I heard on NPR with a drum machine book out.
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 12:37pm Mike East:

thought I was gonna have to sleep on the porch Wednesday night...I got home at 3am and forgot my key. Luckily I was able wake my wife up, but in doing so, woke the baby up, and therefore ended up with about 3 hours of sleep for the night.
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 12:38pm Uncle Michael:

Put the baby on the porch next time.
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 12:40pm Doug Schulkind:

Ladies and gents, James Black on the drums...
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 12:40pm Uncle Michael:

Did I type that out loud? Sorry.
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 12:45pm TR In MI:

I gotta go but just wanted to say great show (as usual!) Uncle Mike, will be catching the rest later on the archives!
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 12:46pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks TR!
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 12:47pm Doug Schulkind:

I love the James and Bobby Purify version of this. Which leads me to think of Purified Water. Sorry.
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 12:49pm pacific standard simon:

Bet you wouldn't make that joke on your own show!
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 12:50pm Spooner Oldham:

Screw who?
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 12:51pm Gary:

What did I miss?
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 12:52pm pacific standard simon:

All the good stuff.
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 12:54pm Uncle Michael:

Spooner wasn't one of the other guys.
  Fri. 1/24/14 12:54pm KevinfromBayRidge:

Anudder great one, Unc et al.Loving it all from temporary shelter from the storm in SE Fla in Android app.
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 12:55pm Uncle Michael:

Come in I sez...I'll give you shelter from the storm, Kevin.
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 12:58pm Uncle Michael:

efd and the rest of you rockers will enjoy the next set. I promise.
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 12:58pm pacific standard simon:

Need some live surfin' to warm your cockles? The live stream from Mavericks surf contest, for after this show:

www.sfgate.com...
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 1:00pm Uncle Michael:

Yeah, I saw that was being streamed. How big is the surf today?
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 1:05pm Jeff Golick:

This is probably not the largest wave surfed anymore, but this little vid still gives me the cold chills: www.youtube.com...

Hi, again.
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 1:07pm Uncle Michael:

Sinnerman is all the big wave I care to surf today.
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 1:11pm SeanG:

holy shit that is a big wave! diggin this tune!
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 1:14pm Mike East:

no need to wait for the show to end...just turn the volume down. that's what I'm doing. Should I be working, yes, probably, but don't tell the boss.
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 1:14pm Mike East:

just read an article about Sherlock this morning that made me want to get into it. I think I've only seen one episode thus far.
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 1:15pm northguineahills:

I bought in to Sherlock as well...
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 1:17pm Uncle Michael:

Hot Dogs = Big Star labelmates
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 1:18pm Stevel:

Sparks!!
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 1:19pm Brian in UK:

Here's a surfing slideshow from Portugal last year.
www.independent.co.uk...
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 1:20pm Stevel:

Bought this album used in 1979 or 80. Guy at the counter said something like "yeah, definitely a couple of weird English guys."
Me: What's it sound like?
Guy: "Sounds like a couple of weird English guys."
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 1:21pm Uncle Michael:

Weird English guys from California.
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 1:22pm efd:

For me this was the less-listened-to side of Indiscreet.
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 1:23pm Uncle Michael:

I guess you were being discreet.
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 1:25pm Stevel:

California/England=same thing.
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 1:27pm Uncle Michael:

Absolutely!
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 1:27pm Uncle Michael:

I'd like to see Sugar live again.
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 1:28pm Stevel:

I'd agree with efd re. side one being optimal, buit I had a thing about listening to entire albums. I grew to enjoy side 2's more oddball arrangements. Mostly because I was fairly ADD about listening to all of the album, all of the time.
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 1:30pm Stevel:

I also had a thing about writing redundantly, much of the time, often.

I'd love to see Sugar. Saw Husker Du several times.
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 1:33pm SeanG:

gonna turn this UP
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 1:34pm northguineahills:

I had a chance to see Francis Black solo back in '97, and had tickets. But I noticed a friend I knew from HS who drove over 70 miles to the venue (in my town) who was a HUGE Pixies/Francis fan, and was begging to buy tix for the sold out show. He offering 2.5x the amount of the face price of the ticket. I couldn't stand to see his agony, so I sold him my ticket at face value.
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 1:34pm Mike East:

aw come on, I just turned the surf stream off...now you play surfrock bed music?
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 1:38pm Uncle Michael:

What was I thinking?!
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 1:39pm northguineahills:

Ok, It's time for me to tune into Bryce. Thanks Unky Mikey!
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 1:40pm northguineahills:

(It's hard to divide this slot for my listening attention).
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 1:40pm northguineahills:

Never heard this Direct Current, Nice!
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 1:40pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks NGH.
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 1:41pm pacific standard simon:

Sorry, I've been in and out (mostly out) -- getting ready for work. Near Santa Cruz is near enough. The thing I like about modern surf music is the relative absence of gratuitous saxophones.
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 1:41pm Uncle Michael:

Disco trumps!
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 1:42pm Uncle Michael:

Modern surf also seems to feature more than rudimentary bass and drums.
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 1:44pm pacific standard simon:

It would be nice to hear more bongos, though.
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 1:44pm Uncle Michael:

I agree. More bongos.
  Fri. 1/24/14 1:45pm ccrides:

Damn..!..I can't wait till spring!!!!...:)O(:..
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 1:46pm Uncle Michael:

Spring is good.
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 1:46pm hyde:

I made it!
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 1:46pm Uncle Michael:

man...what a crappy sounding MP3. I'll bet the next one is just as mooshed.
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 1:47pm pacific standard simon:

Hey, my Criterion edition of It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World arrived this week -- can't wait to dig in!
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 1:48pm Uncle Michael:

I won't tell you how it ends.
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 1:48pm pacific standard simon:

Too late.
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 1:50pm pacific standard simon:

Gots to go -- hear you again soon! Thanks for all the grooviness.

Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 1:58pm Uncle Michael:

What's with all the damned disco today?

Someone had to ask.
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 2:02pm glenn:

well, mike east, i remember once proudly telling somebody at a bar that i had never locked my keys in my car, only to get back to my car 2 hours later to find my keys locked in it.
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 2:03pm Uncle Michael:

I have never shot off one of my toes.

Uh oh.
  Fri. 1/24/14 2:05pm ccrides:

Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 2:06pm listener james from westwood:

hey hey, folks! is there room for one more? or is that why charles is shaking his head?
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 2:07pm Uncle Michael:

Squeeze in, James.
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 2:08pm Mike East:

@glenn - I've done that more times than I'd care to admit. Learned to break into my car pretty quickly as a result. I've also locked the keys in there with the car still running.
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 2:08pm Jeff Golick:

For after the show: the Bad Lip Reading folks did another NFL vid: www.youtube.com...
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 2:08pm listener james from westwood:

it's like groucho's cabin in "night at the opera" in here. i'll have two hard-boiled eggs.
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 2:09pm Jeff Golick:

If you told me that Miriam Makeba covered "For What It's Worth," I would only believe you because UM just played it on this show.
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 2:09pm Uncle Michael:

Are you sure you really heard it?
  Fri. 1/24/14 2:10pm ccrides:

Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 2:13pm Jeff Golick:

So so good, glenn. So so good.

And now Twitter is freaking out because apparently gmail blew up?
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 2:15pm glenn:

Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 2:15pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 2:16pm Jeff Golick:

Judging by the ALL CAPS explosion in my feeds, REAL GOOD.
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 2:16pm earrie:

It done blew up and went kaput when I clicked on 'display images' from 7SD newsletter. It was me. I admit it.
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 2:16pm glenn:

yep, temporarily unavailable.
Avatar Fri. 1/24/14 2:17pm glenn:
