Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 12:02pm Alex In Illinois:

The show started without the usual stop-start glitch. Maybe that is because I am listening using Winamp
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 12:02pm duke:

I lost my head over these video games
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 12:02pm βrian:

Is it afternoon?! I must be late for work!

Present, sir!
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 12:04pm Uncle Michael:

Hello all. Alex, I think that's due to the fact that the way Doug and I connect to the stream isn't the same.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 12:05pm bibi:

hi all. nice pic. is that jeff bridges in tronIII ?
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 12:05pm Dominick:

This should be adapted into an Enchanted Tiki Room like attraction
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 12:06pm Alex In Illinois:

It is only Afternoon if you are in Eastern time, Atlantic time, Newfoundland time, east of there but west of Greenwitch mean time.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 12:07pm Artie:

Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 12:08pm Alex In Illinois:

It is still morning here in Central time, Mountain time, and Pacific time. I don't know about Weld Mountain Thyme though
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 12:08pm Alex In Illinois:

I meant Wild Mountain Thyme
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 12:10pm Uncle Michael:

This isn't working. Where's efd?
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 12:11pm pacific standard simon:

Trapped in the crevasse between time zones.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 12:11pm efd:

ha ha! I'm right here! I was just looking up some background on Stevie Wright before posting.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 12:12pm Uncle Michael:

I've got your number, mister.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 12:14pm efd:

it's true, I'm a sucker for AC/DC soundalikes, among other things. And that was more like AC/DC-adjacent!
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 12:14pm Uncle Michael:

Right...maybe a Geordie soundalike?
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 12:15pm efd:

And the Oz Rock continues.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 12:16pm Uncle Michael:

Lotta crappy Sherbet tracks...a few excellent ones. I think I've played the best one before.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 12:18pm listener james from westwood:

heh, the title card of the video for this cramps cut came up a a gif in my tumblr feed yesterday.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 12:19pm Uncle Michael:

I'm reading your email too, James.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 12:22pm pacific standard simon:

Les Paul was napping, but he still slowly strummed in his sleep.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 12:22pm listener james from westwood:

do it while you can! the prez might be shutting that down!
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 12:22pm Uncle Michael:

He earned a rest.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 12:24pm duke:

I'm doing quite well in my time machine, answering from the future.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 12:25pm duke:

Doug's show is always great. I'll catch Gary in the archives using my time machine.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 12:25pm Present Time Gary:

is doing fine, but buried under work at work (which might be why they call it work?)
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 12:25pm pacific standard simon:

Doin' what I can, Uncle! Missing the last hour again for bread-related reasons (probably next week, too).
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 12:26pm glenn:

fifteen two, fifteen four, and a double run of three makes ten.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 12:28pm glenn:

apparently, and i have no way to prove this, st. louis blues is the first "blues" to be published in sheet music.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 12:29pm pacific standard simon:

Actually asked to work today, so I can spend "An Afternoon With Groucho" (Frank Ferrante) tomorrow. Best one-man show ever.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 12:30pm Uncle Michael:

Thank you for both bits of info, glenn! I forget my cribbage scoring.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 12:32pm Doug Schulkind:

The grand tech poobahs have yet to be able to fix the glitch that causes hiccups when shows changeover on the stream. Sorry about the annoyance!
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 12:32pm Brian in UK:

The rhyming slang for 'skyrocket' is 'pocket' over here. Bob Skyles & his Pockets does not really work. Hey.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 12:33pm Uncle Michael:

Is that a skyrocket in your pocket or are you just happy to be vertical?
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 12:33pm glenn:

no worries. if you play me you won't be scoring any points anyway. :)
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 12:34pm Brian in UK:

Salutin' you too boss.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 12:36pm Brian in UK:

Let's go do THE SHIRT.
My trouserpress is warmed up and ready for action.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 12:37pm Uncle Michael:

We might one day do The Strain.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 12:39pm pacific standard simon:

Trifecta: "The Strain", "Constipation Blues", and a live version of "Nothing Is Easy" where Ian gets particularly obnoxious with his grunts and groans.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 12:39pm listener james from westwood:

doug, apologies if you posted this in the earlier playlist, but the PA voter id law has been overturned: thinkprogress.org...
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 12:41pm glenn:

don't forget "the intergalactic laxative".
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 12:44pm pacific standard simon:

I HAD forgotten Donovan's golden, shining moment!
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 12:45pm Brian in UK:

The grammar on this song is very poor.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 12:46pm Brian in UK:

So is the grandad.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 12:46pm ken in denver:

The Guess Who really knew how to stick it to THE MAN.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 12:47pm glenn:

i love the guess who as well, but burton lost his way as soon as he left.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 12:51pm Gary:

Nice! I may have missed this, but who's the woman (and now guy) singing?
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 12:52pm Uncle Michael:

Abbey Lincoln
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 12:53pm Uncle Michael:

No idea who the guy is, Gary...
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 12:54pm Gary:

Grazie -- great track!
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 12:54pm northguineahills:

I've somehow missed this Max Roach, UM. Bravo!
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 12:55pm Uncle Michael:

We Insist! is a pretty great album.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 12:55pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 12:56pm glenn:

here's the crack smoking mayor of toronto -
and here's the cheese wielding pervert of philadelphia
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 12:56pm Gary:

Aha! Awesome ... will read up on it
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 12:56pm Uncle Michael:

Must we choose?
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 12:58pm Rich in Washington:

What a great album this is. Sonny's swan song. So great.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 12:59pm Uncle Michael:

Check the lineup.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 12:59pm glenn:

separated at birth.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 1:00pm northguineahills:

this makes me want to listen to the original Space Ghost Coast to Coast theme song.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 1:01pm Rich in Washington:

It's probably one of my 20 all time favorite albums of all time. It's going in the box with me.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 1:01pm Doug Schulkind:

Beat me to it, NGH!
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 1:01pm Uncle Michael:

I loved that show SO much...and that theme.

I loved Cartoon Planet more though.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 1:02pm Rich in Washington:

northguineahills: there's a whole EP's worth of takes on the Space Ghost theme out there.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 1:02pm Uncle Michael:

If I ever change my avatar...it's totally gonna be Brak.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 1:03pm northguineahills:

@Rich: Really?!!! How did I miss that!!!
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 1:03pm Rich in Washington:

Space Ghost: Coast To Coast goo.gl...
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 1:04pm Rich in Washington:

Ask the Ages really needs a vinyl reissue
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 1:12pm Rich in Washington:

I've always said sharr-OCK. That's how I seem to recall always hearing it.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 1:14pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks Rich.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 1:14pm Jeff Golick:

Did somebody say Sonny Sharrock?
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 1:15pm efd:

I had a hunch you'd be playing some 10cc today.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 1:15pm Rich in Washington:

Love 10cc. Am a huge Godley & Creme fan, too.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 1:16pm duke:

I have a Moltar action figure on my desk. My son gave it to me. We watched Space Ghost all the time. Ask The Ages is another one of those must have albums.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 1:16pm Uncle Michael:

efd, this show was entirely in the can on Tuesday. Just sayin'!
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 1:18pm Uncle Michael:

I have a Brak animatronic AM radio. It no longer seems to animate though.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 1:21pm Dominick:

I never tire of this record
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 1:23pm Mike East:

enjoying the show today. all over the place...in the best way.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 1:23pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks, Mike.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 1:25pm listener james from westwood:

i have recently learned that a 4-year-old of my acquaintance likes frank sinatra. likes going to sleep to him, in fact. that kid is being raised right.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 1:26pm Uncle Michael:

hell yes
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 1:28pm listener james from westwood:

o for the days when songs had strings behind them like "galveston."
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 1:29pm Jeff Golick:

O my.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 1:30pm Uncle Michael:

Hey Jeff!
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 1:30pm northguineahills:

Gotta run. Thanks UM!
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 1:30pm Jeff Golick:

Heyo! I answered the Sonny Sharrock call a little earlier...
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 1:31pm Jeff Golick:

I am currently horrified by the memory of how much I once listened to my Deju Vu cassette.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 1:32pm Uncle Michael:

Why should you be?
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 1:32pm Jeff Golick:

I am also reeling at the thought that you, UM, had this show ready to go on *Tuesday.*
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 1:32pm Jeff Golick:

I dunno, man. I think familiarity led to contempt.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 1:35pm efd:

Jeff, you and me both! My show isn't even ready at 9pm on Wednesday!
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 1:37pm Jeff Golick:

Glad to hear it, @efd. I was actually thinking this morning that D:O Radio could probably be improved with some foresight and planning. And then I thought: nah.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 1:38pm Alex In Illinois:

Kirsty MacColl died in a boating accident
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 1:40pm Uncle Michael:

I didn't know that. Wow.

I figure my show has to be ready sometime so I try and have the last details squared away on Wednesday night usually so I can relax about it on Thursday. I'm always casually at work on the next one.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 1:40pm Stevel:

There's great stuff that I've listened to countless times that I find it unnecessary to listen to often, if at all. Still, it was great stuff and, as UM says, worthy of that attention.

Perhaps there is a limit to how many times you can listen to one song.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 1:41pm pacific standard simon:

It's funny, listening to your old shows, Michael, when you were constantly playing requests.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 1:42pm ndbob:

ah - just listened to this yesterday
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 1:42pm Jeff Golick:

I feel you, @UM. And I sincerely love the idea of loving the thing regardless of -- or apart from -- baggage/context/cultural-barnacle-accretion. You do it so well every week! There are just some things that, for me, resist this unencumbered view; can't do it/see it/hear it cleanly, anew.

And as @Stevel puts it above, I think I hit my limit with CSN. I can still sing all of those songs word for word in my head. I get it, I got it. Good.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 1:43pm davex:

Yes, that's Kirsty of Fairytale of New York (Pogues) fame.

Anyhow, just checking in briefly - enjoying the show, Michael.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 1:43pm Uncle Michael:

Well, thank you for indulging me, Jeff!
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 1:44pm Uncle Michael:

Simon, in a way, those Saturday night shows were difficult for me.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 1:44pm Stevel:

Of course, on a late night drive across the state, I once listened to Motorhead's Ace Of Spades 26 times in a row. It still rocks.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 1:45pm pacific standard simon:

By "old shows", I mean pre-WFMU -- very different kind of show.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 1:46pm Uncle Michael:

I didn't pander much on Thursdays...a few requests...ones I liked. On Saturdays I was nicer to people.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 1:46pm Alex In Illinois:

Enjoying this Beefheart
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 1:47pm Jeff Golick:

Happy belated to the Captain.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 1:48pm pacific standard simon:

And then the Wednesday theme shows were totally planned. You've been everywhere, done everything!
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 1:49pm Uncle Michael:

Me and Hank Snow.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 1:49pm pacific standard simon:

Have you thought about adding more "out" rock to your show, Jeff?
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 1:50pm pacific standard simon:

Oh crap, I gotta run. Worktime!
  Fri. 1/17/14 1:52pm tater:

Listening in today UM
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 1:52pm Uncle Michael:

Be careful out there, PSS.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 1:52pm Uncle Michael:

Hiya Tate. On the road?
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 1:53pm efd:

ooh, I've always loved this song ("Hard Work Drivin' Man"). I would have sworn I played it once, but it looks like I haven't according to the playlist search.
  Fri. 1/17/14 1:54pm tater:

In the office on my phone
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 1:56pm Uncle Michael:

Always glad when you take the time, Tate. Thanks.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 1:59pm efd:

It's from the movie Blue Collar, with Ry Cooder on guitar.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 2:00pm Uncle Michael:

And of course, Ry was in the Magic Band when he was like 16 or 17.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 2:04pm Alex In Illinois:

Did he include "Humpin'" in that list? Yes, "Hoopin' and the Humpin'"! I heard it.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 2:05pm Uncle Michael:

I think it was "humpin' and a dumpin'."
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 2:07pm Lewis:

Is this what is called the Bakersville sound? whatever it is called I really like it!
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 2:08pm Uncle Michael:

This is...and Buck of course. Glad you do!
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 2:09pm Uncle Michael:

Justin is Ernest's oldest boy.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 2:10pm Lewis:

Buck, of course! (my daughters fave briefly in early elementary school years (followed then by Jr. Brown)).
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 2:12pm Uncle Michael:

Junior is great.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 2:12pm Uncle Michael:

For some unexplained reason, Junior's being inducted into the Kansas Music Hall of Fame this year.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 2:14pm Lewis:

did they run out of Kansans?
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 2:14pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 2:15pm Lewis:

You could do a lot worse if you have to go abroad for inductees!
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 2:16pm Uncle Michael:

I spose so.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 2:17pm glenn:

poll time - what herb (s) should i put on a pizza with tomato sauce and smoked mozzarella?
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 2:18pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 2:19pm Mike East:

oregano and basil are the obvious choices.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 2:21pm glenn:

hmmmm. i thought basil, but now i'm leaning towards tarragon.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 2:21pm glenn:

i'm also thinking about some lemon zest.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 2:22pm Mike East:

though maybe some tarragon or sage would be fun
  Fri. 1/17/14 2:23pm earrie:

Freshly ground pepper.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 2:23pm Mike East:

if you're adding lemon zest, I say tarragon would be a fine choice.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 2:25pm glenn:

salt and pepper are a given.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 2:26pm Uncle Michael:

tarragon and lemon zest..I might forgo the tomato sauce and use some sun dried tomatoes
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 2:26pm Uncle Michael:

extra virgin...fresh pepper...
