Good Morning Dave!
Just logged in right in time for the fun show!

Hello to the rest of the word!
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 6:03am Dave Bombay:

Morning Guido!
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 6:04am Guido (Cologne):

By the way, autogenics don't work with me.
It makes me panic actually.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 6:05am fred:

Good morning Dave, good afternoon Guido
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 6:05am Guido (Cologne):

Hi Fred!
  Fri. 1/17/14 6:06am Longtime Listener:

Good morning Mr Bombay
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 6:06am Heidelberg:

Hello DJ Dave Bombay and tapping listeners. Guido, are you a printer? if so are you a pressman or pr-press?
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 6:07am Dave Bombay:

My show is based around anti-autogenics with a dash of Hari Krishna theory & Scientology themed crackers.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 6:08am Dave Bombay:

Good morning gang! Nice to have you with us this morning!
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 6:09am Guido (Cologne):

@WD4+Gaffa
i have a certain past as a volunteer as typesetter (old fashioned type of).
and I had my days with fanzines.
Why you're asking?
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 6:10am Guido (Cologne):

Nice cooking recipe, Dave!
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 6:11am Meilie:

I read your comment earlier about noisy printing equiptment in the area where you were. if you did hot-lead typesetting, you are older than I thought.
  Fri. 1/17/14 6:13am Longtime Listener:

Very nice jazzy set mr Bombay
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 6:14am Guido (Cologne):

I even look younger than I am. *grin*
I'm working at a very small publishing house.
I'm not the printer, I am the online-man.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 6:14am Harris:

I was in commercial offset and digital printing (and art printing). Just curious.
  Fri. 1/17/14 6:14am Longtime Listener:

Herbie Hancock has a great jazz piece called "maiden voyage"
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 6:16am Miller:

Italian printing is / was a high quality product in centuries past, as you know, I'm sure.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 6:17am Dave Bombay:

You are correct Longtime Listener! Herbie Hancock is amazing! We just got a giant 34 disk box set of his in the station.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 6:18am Guido (Cologne):

A distant frind of mine recently told, she has a Blue-Note-lounge now!

Got an entire blue-note-vinyl collection from an unlucky guy who replaced everything with CDs years ago. She now "installed" that as part of her new extra living room.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 6:19am Chief:

Head Hunters is one of my all time fav albums. Yea HH. That's some box set DJ Dave Bombay, are you going to be sharing any with us?
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 6:20am Guido (Cologne):

I once was heading for studying graphic design. So I'm familiar with all that stuff and all the pre-DTP-technologies as well.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 6:21am Dave Bombay:

@Guido - That is amazing! What a lucky lady! I recently acquired a large number of Blue Note recordings myself.

@Cheif - I played some selections last week and will be featuring more next week. Today's jazz set is Blue Note-centric.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 6:21am house of adobe:

Cool. Thanks DJ Dave Bombay
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 6:23am Guido (Cologne):

Yeah! she starts to invite people:
"Have a cocktail at my Blue-Note-Linge".
Very stylish!
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 6:24am Dave Bombay:

Quite chic indeed!
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 6:28am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Hocus Pocus ? Where's the yodelling - ?!?
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 6:30am Dave Bombay:

No yodelling on my recording...
  Fri. 1/17/14 6:32am Longtime Listener:

I am just amazed when ever I hear anything by Herbie Hancock!
Maiden voyage
Head hunters
Fat Albert rotunda
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 6:32am da Baum:

@Guido just checked your acrylic wall hanging work. REALLY NICE MAN. Plus your an Italian stone mason...too cool! You must understand all the art history that implies.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 6:33am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...oh well - as long as you're sure these guys you're playing know how to play a little bit - we'll be okay w/ this 'Jass' stuff - just for now you understand...
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 6:33am Sem Chumbo:

Good morning, Dave. All that jazz sounds great to me.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 6:36am Hancho:

@Rev Rabbit Jazz is the stopping point for me in music tolerance, the next step down for me is Opera and I refuse to go there.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 6:39am Dave Bombay:

@Rev Rabbit - Jass will be done shortly... dont worry. I have a nice stack of 45s coming up next.

@Sem - Good morning! I am glad you can dig it.

@Hancho - Fear not! Opera has not and will not be played on this show.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 6:40am Sem Chumbo:

@Hancho: thought the same about Opera until friends staged an intervention and I was sent to a long term music appreciation facility. Glad they did.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 6:41am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- yerknow Hancho - I can see myself saying that - & then thinking Pavarotti was a real nice guy who communicated warmth - & seeing 'Porgy & Bess' wouldn't be so bad...& so on
@DB: That was meant totally ironically - love Jazz - but I fear not, your Mix is good...
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 6:41am Guido (Cologne):

@WD4+Gaff
Thanks for compliments! I dig it!
I was more of a "German" stone mason.
Workin at romanesque churches ...
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 6:50am Guido (Cologne):

... concerning evolution of tastes:

When in the mid-80ies even my beloved "inidie" music started to get on my nerves, I was getting deeply into: 60ies Garage and Jazz (Hard-Bop, Free, Fusion) and modernist Classical and DIY-Tape-Underground.

Escape of cul de sac.
  Fri. 1/17/14 6:51am will:

One minute it's Art Farmer, next minute it's the Zero Boys. Can't think of a better way to sum up why we LUV our WFMU.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 6:58am Quark:

@Sem, I would of liked to seen that ambush. Did your friends first invite you over for a heavy-metal listening marathon only to capture in a blanket and drive you to the music re-education camp?

@Rev Rabbit I will admit Who's Tommy and Quadraphenia is most tolerable.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 6:59am Guido (Cologne):

... one moment:
correct speed for Black Flag?
... allright ANY speed is correct for WFMU!
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 7:00am true type:

DJ Dave Bombay is punishing us for making fun of Jazz me thinkin'.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 7:01am Guido (Cologne):

That version is really great!
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 7:03am Sem Chumbo:

@Quark:it's like you were there...except there was Thorazine involved. And restraints.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 7:03am pagemaker:

Thorazine? restraints? Yea! I know the place!
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 7:04am Dave Bombay:

@guido - you are twice correct! I was playing it at the wrong speed and on purpose! Good ear!
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 7:05am Guido (Cologne):

Do you also have the 78-RPM-option?
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 7:06am Dave Bombay:

Not on the turn table i was using... so i improvised!
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 7:09am Guido (Cologne):

God bless direct-drive-turntables!
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 7:10am bibi:

'endless bummer', is that a poetic tribute to fennesz ?
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 7:15am bibi:

Henry Rollins knocking at wfmu's door... good luck Dave.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 7:19am Dave Bombay:

@bibi - Let Henry come! I maintain that it was an act of active & willing mischief!
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 7:24am bibi:

four tet got really tough lately. but it still works.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 7:25am Dave Bombay:

I am a bigger fan of their back catalog but this new album isnt bad (in my opinion)
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 7:37am PKNY:

Just getting in the office...so some put out the Black Flag demos on a 7 inch? I've got a boot on 12 inch vinyl, I wish that version of the band had recorded "My War".
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 7:38am fred:

I'm wondering whether to go see Silver Mt Zion again. It's been a while, but it's expensive
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 7:39am Dave Bombay:

How expensive is expensive? Where are they playing?
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 7:41am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...listening gratefully while I can until those life sentences of finding food & wageslavery must be attended to in timely fashion...
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 7:42am fred:

€25 in Paris
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 7:49am Guido (Cologne):

Nice!
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 7:50am Dave Bombay:

@Rev Rabbit - Fill your brain with the magic potion that is WFMU to sustain you while you slog through the mud of uninformed! Be Strong!
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 7:51am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- Thank You brother - I'm sittin' here in smalltown NewHampshuh - & online streams are my favorite thing in the world! Listening to FMU on the (plain old) car radio is not an option...There's a difference between stations w/ Live DJs & just Servers (or whatever it is) loaded w/ tunes - but even those are loaded by somebody & some are pretty kewl ! ...I'm greedy & I love options...
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 7:53am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- FMU has about twice as many Plays in my iTunes as the next station (WWOZ as it happens) - & you know for sure most of those Plays were for much longer...
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 7:57am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- also: Local Regional stuff like on regular Radio doesn't bother me @ all - in fact, it's great hearing about NJ/NYC - as it is hearing about the temperature & clubs in N'Orleans on WWOZ, or the traffic in LA on KCRW - I like it !...
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 7:57am fred:

I've been listening to WFMU since 2001 or 2002, and for a while my only other source of music has been live shows (more than 100 a year, so my definition of "expensive" might be low)
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 8:00am Dave Bombay:

@Rev Rabbit - I am with you on the local aspect for sure. I have always enjoyed the regional aspect of radio.

@Fred - I have found so much great music through FMU as a listener over the years! The freedom is amazing and my music library has grown exponentially since joining the crew here a couple years ago.
  Fri. 1/17/14 8:01am !.!:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

i be listen to dve n bombay since 1994, he really good fmu dj 1 of best,,,!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i luv u dav n bombay n yeou music so gud,,,<!!!!!!!!!!!
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 8:03am Dave Bombay:

Thank you for listening!
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 8:07am Guido (Cologne):

Do have WFMU-DJ-Canidates pass a certain "eclectizism"-test?
I guess so.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 8:07am fred:

Dave, my record collection is limited by my budget, I go to live shows instead. These days, most of my new records are DJ premiums. They keep me busy for a long time, I only finished listening to all of last year's batch last month
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 8:12am bibi:

@fred quite expensive cause happening at la cigale.... apparently no 'première partie'.
polaris prize effect ? i guess the venue and fare were decided long before.
i'd suggest save 25e for another gig.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 8:14am Guido (Cologne):

As a teenager I used to save my money for records instead of going to live shows, in order that I would have "longer joy with the lasting things".

How wrong I was!
I better do not tell what I missed!
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 8:15am Dave Bombay:

@Guido - Everyone has their own path to WFMU DJ-dom. Having a wide music base is a common thread though.

@Fred - I do the same thing! I am very lucky to work with Brian Turner and I get to handle much of the new music that goes into rotation here. Because of that, much of it ends up on my computer. If I didnt have that going for me, my music library would be much much smaller.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 8:17am Cheri Pi:

punching the WFMU time card, hello listeners and Dave
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 8:17am fred:

@bibi: la cigale is often more expensive than that, I haven't been there in years. They will probably play a long show, but I'll probably save that money and see three other shows instead
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 8:17am Dave Bombay:

Salutations Cheri!
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 8:21am bibi:

@fred 'long show' i bet you re right !
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 8:22am Cheri Pi:

I've been jonesing for some De la. t'anks!
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 8:30am bibi:

fun, that inxs thing. the overexcited kick drum before bridges and verses. sounds like recorded in 10sqm toilets.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 8:31am Sem Chumbo:

Diggin' the whole deal you've got going on here this am, Dave. Many clicky stars worth of goodness. Thanks, and catch you next week.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 8:32am ausmanx:

fred, i think SMZ are better than Godspeed these days (they were BEYOND tedious last year) but i think both are very lazy and well past their use by date these days. still, you don't get NUTHIN for 25 euros in this part of the world!
  Fri. 1/17/14 8:33am KP:

Nice shot at Killing moon by these two
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 8:40am Guido (Cologne):

Please teach me:

What is "Old-School-Hip-Hop" nowadays?
In my memory "New School" startet with Whoodini, the Def-Jam Records' artists ...
OK, time passes ...
... it's not a static genre name (anymore)?
It used to be back in the 90ies, leastways as far as "European knowledge" is concerned.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 8:40am fred:

@ausmanx: are you coming over here this year? The Sonic Protest lineup should be announced any day now
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 8:42am Dave Bombay:

@guido- I use Old School to mean anything before 1990. To be fair my definition is rather loose.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 8:44am w41:

The last hour of yr show is priceless
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 8:44am PKNY:

I gotta say, Whodini doing rap-rock doesn't really work well.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 8:44am Dave Bombay:

but i am also going to play a track from The Coup from 1993... like I said, i use it pretty loosely.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 8:44am Guido (Cologne):

I see, thanks dave!
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 8:46am Dave Bombay:

@PKNY - I agree.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 8:48am PKNY:

If you put the old-school hip-hop channel on Sirius/XM on, you'll hear everything from "Spoonin Rap" from '79 to mid-90s Goodie Mod tracks. So at this point in history, calling something "old school" doesn't really help to narrow things down.

I would say the original use of "old school" as far as hip-hop was to refer to groups who were around before Run-DMC dropped (Cold Crush, Treacherous 3, Funky 4+1, Furious 5, etc).
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 8:51am Dave Bombay:

That is true. I personally widen that definition for ease on the show.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 8:52am Guido (Cologne):

OK, let's try other definitions ...
1. pre-Sugar-Hill / Enjoy Period
2. pre 808-Period
3. pre sampling piracy period
4. ???
... just playing around ...
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 8:54am PKNY:

A newer definition could be "anything that came out before Biggie and Tupac died". For a lot of kids, that seems to be a dividing line, where they all know those two, but don't know any of the MCs that inspired them.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 8:56am Guido (Cologne):

... interesting!
Nice that we talked about ...
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 8:57am Guido (Cologne):

Enjoyed the show!
thank you Dave!
CU!
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 8:58am PKNY:

Great show Dave, we'll do it again next week!
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 9:04am Dave Bombay:

Later guys!
