Avatar    Mon. 12/9/13 12:01pm Sean in Bristol UK:

Hi Kat, the cartoon is fab
Avatar    Mon. 12/9/13 12:01pm braveness23:

B23 here... actually on my way out for lunch but wanted to ask if I could put my coat on this seat and save it for when I get back?
Avatar    Mon. 12/9/13 12:03pm Mike East:

Lunch? Damn, I'm still working on breakfast. First day back after vacation sux.
Avatar    Mon. 12/9/13 12:04pm Irene Trudel:

Hey Everybody! Glad to have you here for however long. @Kat & Sean, I just was looking for a good illustration for today's show and that one popped up on Flickr.

Ah, Lunch! That won't be for a while for me. Enjoy!
Avatar    Mon. 12/9/13 12:08pm Sean in Bristol UK:

Early Floyd, nice

cats!
Avatar    Mon. 12/9/13 12:13pm Guido (Cologne):

if I remeber right, the live-part of Ummagumma album originally was intended to finish up with those live-favorites included. But that eventually didn't work out, since the Floyds went on performing most of it till DSOTM / pre WYWH-period.
Avatar    Mon. 12/9/13 12:16pm kat330:

Back w/ turkey sandwich on tray. I want to look through the others that were at Flickr when my hands are free.
Avatar    Mon. 12/9/13 12:17pm kat330:

And, yes, illustration IS the much better word. Hi, Mr. East!
Avatar    Mon. 12/9/13 12:18pm kat330:

And hi, Sean! Scrolling UP the list, so I'm all backwards.
Avatar    Mon. 12/9/13 12:18pm Irene Trudel:

Cool sidebar-- the illustrator is Erik Blegvad, whose son Peter is a fine songwriter and illustrator too.
Avatar    Mon. 12/9/13 12:18pm Tome:

HI Irene , Hi Kiddles,, nice start on a gloomy day,. Still one of my faves is Pink Floyd at Pompeii where they are playing to an audience I believe >..> . bit.ly...
Avatar    Mon. 12/9/13 12:19pm Sean in Bristol UK:

@Kat, how you getting on with Breaking Bad?
  Mon. 12/9/13 12:20pm lalahartma:

First time tuning in and I loves it.
Avatar    Mon. 12/9/13 12:20pm kat330:

@Sean: Aha, funny you should ask! Just got the final Blu-ray before the weekend before this, and finished up all the specials this weekend. :)
  Mon. 12/9/13 12:21pm Peter K.:

"Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun" -- nice choice!
Avatar    Mon. 12/9/13 12:22pm Sean in Bristol UK:

@Kat, I am heading to Albuquerque in April to pay homage!
Avatar    Mon. 12/9/13 12:23pm kat330:

Philo and I both agree it was a *very* satisfying ending. After watching all the specials, I think it's clear why I was drawn to the series (besides Cranston's awesome acting chops): There are SO many women involved in the production, from writing to directing.
Avatar    Mon. 12/9/13 12:24pm Ken From Hyde Park:

It's like the mild oath I exclaim when I spill milk or stub my toe: "Kittens with mittens!"
Avatar    Mon. 12/9/13 12:25pm kat330:

@Sean: Sure hope it will NOT be a case of "never meet your setting heroes." ;)
Avatar    Mon. 12/9/13 12:26pm bobdoesthings:

Ohhh that's why you don't mess with salamanders.. got it
Avatar    Mon. 12/9/13 12:28pm kat330:

This is a sublime set, Irene.
     Mon. 12/9/13 12:29pm 12539:

This set seems especially well attuned to the weather here in NY.
Avatar    Mon. 12/9/13 12:30pm kat330:

I just love the miffed expressions on the parents -- and the sheepish one on the kitty -- for yet *again* losing mittens.
Avatar    Mon. 12/9/13 12:30pm Irene Trudel:

Thanks folks. It's a dreary, winter-like day in NYC and I like to reflect that mood.
Avatar    Mon. 12/9/13 12:35pm Mike East:

a belated hello, kat330
Avatar    Mon. 12/9/13 12:37pm kat330:

Also (back to the illustration), such a perfect economy of drawing, conveying all it needs to in a minimal amount of objects and space.
Avatar    Mon. 12/9/13 12:43pm Droll:

Cold and dreary here in Seattle (current conditions in avatar), so the show is also spot on here.

Avatar    Mon. 12/9/13 12:46pm kat330:

@Droll: I'm not sure there's a spot in the U.S. today that is NOT cold and a bit dreary. The sun does poke out once in a while here though.
Avatar    Mon. 12/9/13 12:49pm kat330:

@Sean: Whenever you're back in typing distance, forgot to ask: Did the real-time viewers of "BB" also get to see the alternative ending?

I think I spot Icelandic in the playlist -- and not Bjork!
Mon. 12/9/13 12:49pm Richard from Venezuela:

Greetings Irene and all the listeners.

@glenn, Ewww indeed. Now I have to combat even more of those invading buggers, as if I don't have enough in our apartment!
Avatar    Mon. 12/9/13 12:51pm Sean in Bristol UK:

I was sat outside this morning and you feel the heat of the sun, it was wonderful. Calm before the storm, me thinks, but the shortest day is just around the corner. That's psychologically uplifting
Avatar    Mon. 12/9/13 12:52pm glenn:

hey, i don't make the news, i just report it.

(and don't forget there's a marathon premium of Peter B's guest appearances on Jim Price's show)
Avatar    Mon. 12/9/13 12:55pm Sean in Bristol UK:

@Kat, I never knew there was an alternative ending. I am greatly intrigued, I got the box set throughout the post the other day, I haven't opened the packaging, is the alternative ending available on that/
Avatar    Mon. 12/9/13 12:55pm kat330:

@Sean: You see my question at 12:49? Dag, I really need flashing neon lights on my avatar. ;) I'd switch in my new "selfie" on my profile page, but that would fade into the background even worse I fear.
Avatar    Mon. 12/9/13 12:55pm Sean in Bristol UK:

Lovely, lovely set, Irene
Avatar    Mon. 12/9/13 12:56pm kat330:

Ooops. Crossing msgs. Oh, well then, you are IN FOR A TREAT! That's all I'll say about that. :)
Avatar    Mon. 12/9/13 12:57pm kat330:

And, I can only presume if you're paying for a box set then indeed you'll also get all the bells and whistles.
Avatar    Mon. 12/9/13 12:58pm Sean in Bristol UK:

@Kat, another BB fan is popping by my place later, I can't wait to pass on the info, thanks for the heads up
Avatar    Mon. 12/9/13 1:00pm kat330:

This has a "Tusk"-like beat.
Avatar    Mon. 12/9/13 1:00pm Sean in Bristol UK:

@Irene, Juana Molina is one of the numerous wonderful artists you have opened my eyes to, is this her new album?
Avatar    Mon. 12/9/13 1:01pm Droll:

The sound on this Molina is outrageous! BIG stereo!
Avatar    Mon. 12/9/13 1:02pm Irene Trudel:

@Sean, yes Juana has a new album called "Wed 21." I love what she does musically!
  Mon. 12/9/13 1:08pm van:

Quite late today. Hi Irene
Avatar    Mon. 12/9/13 1:11pm kat330:

Ahh, this is real-Lee nice.
Avatar    Mon. 12/9/13 1:11pm Sean in Bristol UK:

Hi Van. @Glenn, just looking back on the comments, you mentioned Mr Halliday, is that the Phillies pitcher?
  Mon. 12/9/13 1:12pm van:

Hi there Sean
Avatar    Mon. 12/9/13 1:12pm kat330:

Irene, can you easily check who is drumming for this "The Rising Tide"?
  Mon. 12/9/13 1:14pm van:

So today's google doodle about Grace Hopper...very cool. I walked over to the American History museum to see the moth remains & log book only to find it not on display.
Avatar    Mon. 12/9/13 1:15pm Sean in Bristol UK:

Just one baseball themed question @Irene. The Curtis G signing, a major step in the right direction? Promise I won't bring up his topic for the rest of the show!!
Avatar    Mon. 12/9/13 1:15pm braveness23:

B23 here! Where is my coat? I put my coat on a seat to save it before I went to lunch and now I can't find it!

(hi Irene! hi friends and soon-to-be friends)
Avatar    Mon. 12/9/13 1:16pm glenn:

sean, yes, but he's signed a one day contract with the blue jays, and will be retiring as a blue jay.
Avatar    Mon. 12/9/13 1:17pm kat330:

Hey, Van, thanks for the Google doodle tip!
Avatar    Mon. 12/9/13 1:18pm B23's Coat:

I'm calling the c.p.a. on you, buddy. that's the Coat Protection Agency.
Avatar    Mon. 12/9/13 1:18pm Sean in Bristol UK:

@Glenn, of course, he started his career in the majors there.
Avatar    Mon. 12/9/13 1:20pm glenn:

yes. i saw him pitch many times.
Avatar    Mon. 12/9/13 1:21pm C.P.A.:

We've determined that B23's coat was acting on it's own accord when it declined going to lunch at the Indian buffet and thus does not qualify for protection.
Avatar    Mon. 12/9/13 1:22pm braveness23:

See! Gimmee back my coat!
Avatar    Mon. 12/9/13 1:24pm kat330:

Maybe Steve Shelley?
Avatar    Mon. 12/9/13 1:24pm Hound Dog Taylor:

To hell with some jive ass coat. Gimme back my wig!
Avatar    Mon. 12/9/13 1:25pm Irene Trudel:

@kat, the drummer on Lee Ranaldo's album is definitely Steve Shelley.
Avatar    Mon. 12/9/13 1:27pm kat330:

Thanks. Quite fine (to my ear) on that "The Rising Tide" track.
Avatar    Mon. 12/9/13 1:28pm Sean in Bristol UK:

A stonking set, Irene
Avatar    Mon. 12/9/13 1:31pm Droll:

I had to look it up, but yes, stonking.
Avatar    Mon. 12/9/13 1:31pm braveness23:

<B23 add 'stonking' to his vocabulary>
Avatar    Mon. 12/9/13 1:32pm Mike East:

Lee Ranaldo's gotta slow down. I still haven't picked up his last album before this one.
Avatar    Mon. 12/9/13 1:35pm kat330:

Ah, this my kind of music. Love the authentic and the newly composed versions of anything medieval / renaissance music.
Avatar    Mon. 12/9/13 1:36pm braveness23:

@kat330 I have to admit that last night a Dead Can Dance track actually caused me to get up, go across the room and skip the song.
Avatar    Mon. 12/9/13 1:38pm kat330:

Not familiar with them.
Avatar    Mon. 12/9/13 1:40pm kat330:

But I certainly appreciate skipping a particular song -- I do it all the time and, with my Internet radio remote, don't even have to "go across the room." ;)
Avatar    Mon. 12/9/13 1:44pm braveness23:

Dead Can Dance is a band that started off really goth and then went into doing medievally and renaissancey sounding music. I was a HUGE fan for a long time but have been removed from them long enough now to be a bit more objective and realize that a handful of their later songs were garbage.
Avatar    Mon. 12/9/13 1:47pm kat330:

@braveness: THIS is a good e.g. of the sort of modern use of old music I love: www.youtube.com...
From "A Clockwork Orange" (sorry for the ad to start off)
Avatar    Mon. 12/9/13 1:48pm kat330:

Come to think of it "Overture to the Sun" would have fit the stars / sun theme in the sets.
Avatar    Mon. 12/9/13 1:48pm Tome:

..old music ,,, hey now ,, I resemble that remark ,,,,
  Mon. 12/9/13 1:50pm P-90:

@ DJ Irene: Thanks for playing some EXTRAORDINARILY fine sets today. It's really appreciated.
Avatar    Mon. 12/9/13 1:51pm Irwin:

Thanks for playing Tash Parker. Great album, passed along by Gotye.
Avatar    Mon. 12/9/13 1:52pm kat330:

Sorry, Tome, but my selfie will confirm I do as well. ;) But WRT to medieval music, I think it needs to be something you feel deeply, as if so immediately familiar. I'm convinced it was a past-life of mine.
Avatar    Mon. 12/9/13 1:52pm Irene Trudel:

Thanks for passing it my way, Irwin! Just started listening to it-- good stuff!
  Mon. 12/9/13 1:54pm don d:

John Compton (Appaloosa) atill creating music. Believe he lives in Vermont now. And yes Kooper signed and produced them, around the time he urged Clive Davis to release Zombies' 'Odessey and Oracle'...
Avatar    Mon. 12/9/13 1:57pm kat330:

Ah, the illustrator's son.
Avatar    Mon. 12/9/13 1:58pm kat330:

A Randy Newman sort of vocal.
Avatar    Mon. 12/9/13 1:59pm Irene Trudel:

Thanks for the update, Don D! I'll have to see what Compton is up to now.

Wall Matthews? Huh, we have a Mall St. Matthews over in Lullville.
  Mon. 12/9/13 2:56pm P-90:

Wow, That "We Three Kings" was achingly beautiful, without a trace of false or forced sentiment. This has been the perfect soundtrack for this grey, grey day. Every year there's a moment when I feel the spirit of the holiday season enter me, sometimes it's at the last minute on Christmas eve, usually at some unpredictable point earlier in the month. This morning was it for this year!
Avatar    Mon. 12/9/13 2:59pm kat330:

Fine one to end on. Thanks, Irene. Have a great rest of your gloomy, dreary or other weather-wise Monday, all.
Avatar    Mon. 12/9/13 3:00pm Sean in Bristol UK:

Irene, that was just beautiful, what a wonderful choice of music, thank you so much

Thanks, Irene!

Archive catch up time!
  Wed. 12/11/13 8:57am van:

Loved the Floyd! Rarely hear their original of this, usually only the covers done by other artists. Thank Irene!
  Thu. 12/12/13 10:26am van:

Beautiful rendition by Wall Matthews, thanks for that. I believe that Joshua Bell also played this recently in his live free webcast from his home.
