Favoriting Brian Turner: Playlist from October 29, 2013 Favoriting

Order and disorder in a freeform haze of terribly-played guitars, shorted-out electronics, found audio detritus, strange sounds from strange lands all around. Psych-punk-junk, collage, even pop. Lots of in-studio live performances to boot.

Terakaft  Live in the WFMU studio   Favoriting Engineered by Ernie Indradat    A West African double bill on the airwaves today: Terakaft formed in Mali in 2001 continuing an electric-charged path forged by other Tuareg kindred spirits like Tinariwen (in fact several ex-Tinariwens reside in Terakaft). Their name translates in Tamasheq to "caravan", and the band has been forced to spread their sounds through live touring and non-domestic channels since political uprisings in Mali in 2012 have forced the music out. They'll be live in the studio today! Also, as a bonus, we'll be broadcasting a set recorded by Rob Weisberg from the New York/Lincoln Center stop of the Festival of the Desert tour this past summer with Imharhan, another electric combo led by Mohamed Issa ag Oumar, a member of Tartit. Tartit and Imharhan stopped by Transpacific Sound Paradise in July as well for a WFMU session. Imharhan  Live at Damrosch Park, Lincoln Center NYC 7/1/13   Favoriting     Thank you to Rob Weisberg and Irene Trudel for the recording. Check out Imharhan and Tartit's live session on Rob's Transpacific Sound Paradise as well here.

Will have to check, but I'd wager "Metal Machine Music" sold more copies in its first year than any Velvet Underground LP did in its first.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:08pm
tim from champaign:

Excellent start, BT! My favorite solo Lou records are Transformer, Berlin, Coney Island Baby, Street Hassle and MMM. MMM is super good. I paid $25 for a vinyl copy of MMM in the late 90s. That was more than I'd ever paid for a record at that time and I'd never seen a copy.

I've honestly never heard it before either. Kewl. Perhaps partly a put-on & an 'up yours' to a Label - but also awesome.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:20pm
Matt from Springfield:

MMM, a fitting tribute!
It was supposed to be a contractual obligation "up yours", but when I first heard it, sounded too melodic to be just a throwaway.

Startling, Side C...are these people cops?

Funny thing about "I Heard Her Call My Name" is--it actually DOES sound a bit like the 1910 Fruitgum Company with feedback piled on!

Hi everyone, tis my last week of the Silent October fundraiser to help build our ground floor performance space for the public, and I'm at a paltry 32% raised. Thanks to everyone for checking in who has; if you can spare some ducats for today's cause, I'd be surely appreciative.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:48pm
Mike Sin:

This 1967 "gymnasium" show is a rare soundboard recording of the VU -- most live tapes are from the audience. Evidently, the tape originated from John Cale. He stated that the Warhol folks had something to do with the recording and he ended up with the tape.
  3:48pm
Grant:

This version of Sister Ray is deadly ... love the plays w/ feedback
  3:51pm

It's pretty sad that it's 2013 and you still can't say "sucking on my ding dong" on the radio. Hostess Cakes is a viable company!

Yerknow - Lou carried that image of decadence - w/ some justification esp. early years - but he really gave a crap about a lot of things, & was pretty political later especially. That bit shows he was inquisitive & discontent - but not intractable.

Lou Reed could bullshit with the very BEST of them(well not the best AS HE SAW IT...BUT IN HIS MIND THE WORST);His sense of linguistic manipulation and how to use it was percieved as "negative" but not to people like the GREAT Lester Bangs, who decided to patrake in Lou's forceful but kind of VERY roundabout way of concluding a point being "Hey man, partake in THIS so we can drive this foolish intellectual bullshit into the ground so we can really relate over a pint of beer and the true SIMPLICITY of great Rock and Roll music"..............................;Just a thought.

...Bangs 1st review was him *panning* the MC5 - so go figure, right...Bangs as RawkWriter was making the point the Medium is the Massage, & his Medium was Rawk...Beatles, Dylan, Warhol & Reed didn't feel any obligation to make any more sense than their interviewers or to Pander to anyone - & that's why they were a Cultural Revolution.
Avatar 4:21pm

Thanks buddy...;That interview was great & this was the best Lou Reed tribute I've heard yet...of the 10+ I've heard thus far.But no one has played the GREAT "Blue Mask" yet (the song)...
