Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Options October 4, 2013: That's not dead air. That's silent fundraising.

Listen to this show: | Add or read comments

It's October at WFMU and that means it's time for 31 days of (mostly) silent fundraising. I'll also be spending less than a minute of each of this month's Hinky Dinky Time broadcasts mentioning this..

It would be great if you could help me help support WFMU. This fall, in addition to supporting general operations, donations will also help fund the completion of the new public performance space in the ground floor of WFMU's building in Jersey City, NJ. This space will add value to WFMU not only for those able to attend performances in person but also for all of the WFMU listeners that will be treated to live and archived events broadcast from there.

Here's a little background on that project:

"Little by little, we're raising money to renovate the ground floor and turn it into a multi-media performance space and radio theater. Most radio stations that do this spend millions of dollars from mega-donors - we're just doing it small step by small step, and now we're at the step of being able to invite the public in for live music, broadcasts, performances, films, art shows and other special events."

"Earlier this year we used listener donations to convert the space from a boring office into an empty room with a stage. This Fall we need to raise $200,000 to bring the space up to code and purchase basic audio equipment so that we can start hosting public events."
What will the money go towards?
  • Building two Disable-Person-Accessible restrooms for the performance space (this is required before we can open to the public).
  • Purchasing basic equipment for the performance space.
Supporters WFMU and Give the Drummer Radio may be eligible for elegant swag, some of it new and never-before-seen, depending on how much you give. You can check that out at https://www.wfmu.org/marathon/pledge.php?pr=HD.

Thanks...Uncle Michael

YW...of course...that's not the version used in the open.
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 12:09pm pacific standard simon:

No... your opening version has more, uh... dynamics, vocals-wise.
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 12:10pm Jeff Golick:

I'm singing along to the Mugwumps, only with the words to "You Can't Catch Me."
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 12:12pm Uncle Michael:

Hmmm...wonder which song is older.
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 12:12pm Jeff Golick:

I'm just going to go ahead and favorite this whole show now.

Good plan.

Uh-huh. No Dead ahead, though, right? I'd never hear the end of it.

Hi Sigurdur. Good to have you.
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 12:35pm Stanley:

Back home, now.
Radio on.
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 12:37pm Uncle Michael:

Hi Stanley.
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 12:38pm Stanley:

Poor old Bee Gees, here in the UK had the piss taken out of them so much. Thanks, mainly in part to having done those disco hits and having such white teeth. Anyway, from what I hear played on WFMU, they were a decent band.
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 12:39pm Uncle Michael:

They're a punchline here too. I don't care.
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 12:40pm Jeff Golick:

Angels...singing my song.
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 12:45pm duke:

I never particularly like the Bee Gees, but I watched Bee Gees: In Our Own Time and I gained a respect for them. I think that disco stuff was actually pretty good when I hear it now. It was just played to death back in the day.
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 12:46pm Uncle Michael:

I agree completely. They also were a little too caught up in letting the marketplace be a critic....dismissing their own work as bad if it didn't sell.
  Fri. 10/4/13 12:46pm Larry:

Rick Springfield?
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 12:47pm listener james from westwood:

fmu treats the bee gees with the respect they deserve. and i wish i had 1% of the profit off that "saturday night fever" sndtrk. their cuts on that wax still kick ass.
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 12:48pm listener james from westwood:

i really had no window into their early-early stuff until i peeked through the pane that fmu provided me.
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 12:49pm listener james from westwood:

and that if anything is worth a pledge!
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 12:52pm βrian:

What, they have weather in Kansas??
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 12:53pm pacific standard simon:

Sound familiar? Of course it does!
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 12:53pm Bob Hite:

Say, I like this Henry Thomas tune.
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 12:54pm Alex In Illinois:

Is he playing the "quills"?
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 12:54pm pacific standard simon:

Yeah, if the stream kicks back in, a house fell on Uncle Michael.
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 12:54pm Uncle Michael:

Would you like to bowwer it?
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 12:54pm Uncle Michael:

The quills, indeed.
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 12:59pm still b/p:

I don't recall Hey Sah-Lo-Ney being a popular song, which is a good thing, because it would've driven the kids to wild behavior.
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 1:00pm Uncle Michael:

yeah...it might have been trouble
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 1:02pm duke:

This song is perfect!
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 1:03pm Uncle Michael:

ain't it just?!
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 1:05pm Uncle Michael:

Larry...I didn't recognize you!
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 1:07pm listener james from westwood:

there are 2 snippets of "psychedelic shack" in david suisman's epic inner ear detour opening montage. glad to finally hear them in their tres funky context!
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 1:07pm Parq:

Great to hear Psychedelic Shack. If you listen to the first track on the FMA set of tracks from the Relatives' set at the record fair last winter ("We Need Love"), you'll hear a lot of Psych Shack in it
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 1:08pm Parq:

For those who might be interested in those Relatives downloads:

Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 1:10pm pacific standard simon:

Ya coulda played The Coasters' "Soul Pad", too.
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 1:20pm Uncle Michael:

(making note of that)
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 1:23pm pacific standard simon:

I feel sort of the way about the Rollers that some of you feel about the Bee Gees -- better, in retrospect, than I was willing to admit at the time.
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 1:24pm Uncle Michael:

Sure...but in all fairness, the rollers were pretty much manufactured. I can't even say any of them actually played on that record...or not.
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 1:24pm Dominick:

Happy Birthday Jody Stephens
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 1:25pm Uncle Michael:

Really? I didn't even know!
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 1:26pm Alex In Illinois:

Gotta love the keyboard work on this classic!
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 1:26pm listener james from westwood:

back to back stars on that big star and the stranglers!!
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 1:27pm Jeff Golick:

With "el Goodo," it was love at first listen for me.
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 1:28pm Uncle Michael:

Hugh, Jody and I all thank you.
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 1:29pm glenn:

clicky clicky clicky.
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 1:33pm pacific standard simon:

I think I use these little stars more to remind myself of stuff to look for later than to "applaud" favorites that I already know -- must be confusing for anyone sifting through the database.
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 1:34pm Jeff Golick:

Can one see others' faves?
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 1:35pm pacific standard simon:

Whadaya mean? That's my favorite Replacements album!
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 1:37pm Alex In Illinois:

I think Uncle Michael is making fun of those who would say that kind of thing about that album.
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 1:37pm pacific standard simon:

@UM - From my tip jar to yours.

@Jeff - Sure. Click the star, then click the "other people favorited" link.
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 1:38pm Uncle Michael:

Oh...at the time I was one of those "Tim" was the beginning of the end people.
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 1:38pm glenn:

if you check out somebody's profile, you can see what they've been clicky starring, and judge them accordingly.
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 1:40pm pacific standard simon:

That's how Santa does it.
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 1:40pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks again, Simon.
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 1:41pm listener james from westwood:

simon, i do it for both reasons, mnemonic and laudatory.
my next dream iteration of the fmu kenzomatic experience: the ability to use your starred items as an automatic playlist.
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 1:42pm Doug Schulkind:

Pledgers of $50 or more will automagically receive a special "junk food" t-shirt from WFMU: www.wfmu.org...
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 1:42pm pacific standard simon:

That would be nice, james.
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 1:42pm Jeff Golick:

Aha. Yes. I totally (did not) know that.
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 1:50pm pacific standard simon:

OK, I'm contradicting myself by starring the Chet -- one of my all-time favorites.
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 2:02pm Playlist Police:

I'm sorry sir, we here at WFMU have a no contradiction policy. You must leave by the nearest exit.
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 2:03pm listener james from westwood:

top-notch speedy!
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 2:04pm Uncle Michael:

Speedy has a very high notch.
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 2:04pm Playlist Police:

Ahhhh, my apologies sir, upon closer examination that's a no CONTRA policy. Carry on.
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 2:04pm Uncle Michael:

Sorry, Jeff.
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 2:06pm listener james from westwood:

now you've made ollie north cry.
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 2:07pm duke:

I don't think I have heard the Grateful Dead on WFMU before. They must have been played, but I never heard them.
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 2:07pm Playlist Police:

Then my work here is complete.
  Fri. 10/4/13 2:09pm Jack:

Heard them before-they're becomming a hot item at FMU recently!
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 2:09pm pacific standard simon:

They fit right in on GTDR.
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 2:10pm Uncle Michael:

Two drummers, no waiting.
  Fri. 10/4/13 2:13pm Jack:

Love it, Jerry losing his place and all!!
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 2:14pm Uncle Michael:

Bob came in early first...Jerry tried to follow him in but it was no use...had to regroup.
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 2:17pm Jeff Golick:

Set myself up, I guess.
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 2:17pm pacific standard simon:

ahhh... there we go...
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 2:19pm Uncle Michael:

It was already ordained, Jeff. I didn't screw ya on purpose!
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 2:20pm Jeff Golick:

I wondered...but good to know, UM! Still here, at any rate; didn't fade away.
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 2:20pm pacific standard simon:

It wasn't easy, back in the day, juggling love for the Dead, punk, and free jazz... but it was worth it.
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 2:24pm pacific standard simon:

I wanted to name my imaginary jug band "The Gentleman Losers" after this song.
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 2:24pm Uncle Michael:

Jerry was all OVER Ornette, man.
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 2:25pm Uncle Michael:

You all just heard my fork.
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 2:25pm Jeff Golick:

I think my (largely ignorant) disdain for the Dead comes almost entirely from a serious allergy to a certain kind of Deadhead, and the sorts of conversations I'd hear in his (or her) proximity. It was like overhearing the worst kind of music blog comment wankering. With patchouli. My loss, musically....

Fork it over, UM.
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 2:26pm Uncle Michael:

I hear ya, Jeff...I hear ya.
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 2:26pm pacific standard simon:

You're supposed to eat your pees with a KNIFE, dang...
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 2:26pm pacific standard simon:

Er, peas.
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 2:28pm Uncle Michael:

no pees...or peas. leftover penne with italian sausage and red bell pepper in a tomato and cream cheese sauce.
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 2:28pm glenn:

oooh. play nitro express by red simpson and junior brown. i loves that tune.
  Fri. 10/4/13 2:29pm Jack:

Never found it difficult to juggle jazz. punk, country, and Dead music-I think the Dead, if you don't take them TOO seriously, actually lead off to all that other stuff
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 2:30pm glenn:

pretty please with tomato and cream cheese on top.
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 2:30pm Uncle Michael:

jack, they led me to a LOT of stuff.
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 2:34pm pacific standard simon:

Nice. I'm building a clam chowder later. Let you know how that works out.
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 2:35pm Uncle Michael:

best of luck!
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 2:35pm glenn:

have you got a permit?
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 2:37pm pacific standard simon:

No, but there's a cup of heavy cream -- try knocking that down!
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 2:38pm glenn:

a nice christmas present. - www.cduniverse.com...
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 2:41pm pacific standard simon:

Speedy & Jimmy? Check. Mills Bros? Check. No FDJA fine this week, UM.
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 2:41pm listener james from westwood:

now you've made franklin roosevelt cry. between him and ollie we've got bipartisan crying going on here.
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 2:42pm pacific standard simon:

My old neighborhood had WPA sidewalks dated 1940.
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 2:54pm Stanley:

Well, three hours has passed like nothing.
Listened all the way through and much enjoyed.
Thanks UM.
Have a good week until next week.
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 2:55pm pacific standard simon:

Here's another guy with odd attitudes about his less commercially successful work.
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 2:55pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks Stanley...high praise. Appreciate you spending the time... see you next time.
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 2:56pm Uncle Michael:

No kidding, Simon.
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 2:56pm pacific standard simon:

That was never three hours!
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 2:56pm Jeff Golick:

I'd like to put in a request? The Dirtbombs appear to have recorded an album of bubblegum pop (www.intheredrecords.com...)...maybe on a future show?
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 2:56pm Uncle Michael:

This is getting hit on the head lessons.
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 2:57pm Jeff Golick:

Three hours? [Dead joke here.]

Thanks for making the work afternoon fly by, UM!
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 2:57pm Uncle Michael:

I will delve, Jeff...thanks for the link.
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 2:58pm listener james from westwood:

thanks for the sweet show; be safe out there with the crazy weather!
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 2:58pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks. I'll batten 'em down.
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 2:59pm pacific standard simon:

And remember, kids, don't wait til the NOISY drive.
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 3:02pm pacific standard simon:

This was always the perfect tune for getting off work tired and sore with a 6-pack and a bag of beer nuts.
Avatar Fri. 10/4/13 3:03pm Jeff Golick:

It is on CD! Or was...picked it up when it became available again some years ago.
