Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Beatnik in Stan Freberg's version of Banana Boat Song:
"Don't sing about spiders, man! Like, I don't dig spiders"
Avatar Fri. 9/27/13 12:28pm pacific standard simon:

It is serious spider season here, but we like the spiders... they keep down the vermin. And the bite is nothing; I just felt crummy for a couple of days.
Avatar Fri. 9/27/13 12:29pm Uncle Michael:

The barn spiders are in full effect all around the exterior of the house. They're no problem but walking through webs is disconcerting.
Avatar Fri. 9/27/13 12:30pm northguineahills:

Shit, pss, in August, I had a couple of spider bites on my right hand, and it swelled up gloved balloon to the point I couldn't move my fingers. After two days of anti-histamines, it went back down.

Avatar Fri. 9/27/13 12:36pm ken in denver:

I couldn't get anybody to pay $3 for that Long John Baldry LP at the record expo last weekend, so I still have it.
Avatar Fri. 9/27/13 12:37pm Uncle Michael:

You can't get that kind of information on any other Internet radio stream, folks. Thanks Simon.
Avatar Fri. 9/27/13 12:37pm Uncle Michael:

I'd pay that, Ken!

Avatar Fri. 9/27/13 12:44pm Alex In Illinois:

Silver Convention! They had another hit called "Fly Robin Fly", whose only words were the title, plus, "Up up to the sky". What country was this band from? They did not need to learn much English.
  Fri. 9/27/13 12:44pm Rikki:

Unkie!! Bubbakins! <3 Great tunes!

Let me get on my-my-my boogie shoes! LOL
Avatar Fri. 9/27/13 12:46pm Alex In Illinois:

I guess you have to give this band some credit. I think they actually sang each phrase. These days you would just loop a digital sample.
Avatar Fri. 9/27/13 12:46pm northguineahills:

I'm trying to connect the dots of today's set..... hmmmmm....
Avatar Fri. 9/27/13 12:47pm pacific standard simon:

Asleep at the Wheel's version of "Choo Choo..." got some FM play when I was about 16. I was singing it for a period and soon had a few buddies breaking out in it now and then when they were a little lit up.

I'm suddenly feeling a strange urge to break out my DVD of Roller Boogie
Avatar Fri. 9/27/13 1:47pm Uncle Michael:

It's a great song. I have no information about the Four Knights version...which is why I played that one.
Avatar Fri. 9/27/13 1:48pm Uncle Michael:

I just learned someone else provided a dubbed vocal when Barbara Stanwyck perfomed Drum Boogie in Ball of Fire. I am sad.
Avatar Fri. 9/27/13 1:59pm pacific standard simon:

An all-around killer-diller set.
Avatar Fri. 9/27/13 2:01pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks Simon.
Avatar Fri. 9/27/13 2:01pm Uncle Michael:

Do you know who sang it, still b/p?
Avatar Fri. 9/27/13 2:05pm pacific standard simon:

Wikipedia says Barbara Tilton.
Avatar Fri. 9/27/13 2:07pm pacific standard simon:

"Drummer and bandleader Gene Krupa performed the song with his band. In an unusual twist, he also played it on a matchbox with matches for drumsticks. Krupa band member and historically significant trumpeter Roy Eldridge received a brief on-camera spot during 'Drum Boogie'"
Avatar Fri. 9/27/13 2:08pm Uncle Michael:

Tilton looped a lot of Hollywood actresses singing if I'm recalling correctly.
Avatar Fri. 9/27/13 2:11pm Uncle Michael:

Schoolly was the shit.
Avatar Fri. 9/27/13 2:12pm pacific standard simon:

Ooops, my brain fart -- that should be MARTHA Tilton.
Avatar Fri. 9/27/13 2:13pm hyde:

I love Ball of Fire, unequivocally
Avatar Fri. 9/27/13 2:13pm still b/p:

Tilton sang popular numbers I'm familiar with, but which I never could have named the vocalist for in a boogillion years.

Krupa's matchstick bit in Drum Boogie is a little bit of a letdown, I always thought. Not much to it.
Avatar Fri. 9/27/13 2:19pm pacific standard simon:

Still, Krupa and Eldridge are a couple of my favorite musicians from that period -- worth it for that. I have a CD they did with Anita O'Day that makes me smile a lot.
Avatar Fri. 9/27/13 2:19pm still b/p:

I always hoot watching Ball of Fire when they call the phone "the Ameche." And the team assembled by Cooper for slang aid is good yuks, too.
Avatar Fri. 9/27/13 2:29pm hyde:

@still b/p it's a character actor cast supreme, really
Avatar Fri. 9/27/13 2:29pm pacific standard simon:

I cannot believe I missed Schoolly D due to my ridiculous level of competiveness with an 8 yr old. Tetherball redos. Back in the 70s I would've kicked his little ass! (8 y/o, not Schoolly).
